30A SONGWRITERS FESTIVAL CELEBRATES 17 YEARS OF HOOKS, LINES & SINGERS
ANCHORING THE ARTS IN FREEPORT
As we reflect on the past year, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for what we’ve accomplished together. The Arts have a unique power to bring people together, spark conversation, and ignite change—and thanks to your continued support, the Cultural Arts Alliance has been able to do just that in deeper, more meaningful ways than ever before.
Through strategic partnerships and collaborations, we expanded our reach, elevated our programs, and found new ways to connect artists and audiences across our community. From bringing transformative Arts education into correctional institutions, to launching innovative public art initiatives and nurturing emerging talent, every project we undertook reflected our core belief: that creativity is essential to a vibrant Walton County.
One beautiful example of art in action is Clay for a Cause, a community-driven project and event that turns creativity into compassion. Through the sale of handcrafted ceramics, we raised critical funds for Caring & Sharing of South Walton’s Food Pantry while raising awareness of our beloved Bayou Arts Center pottery studio. As we plan for our second event this fall, we are thrilled to expand our partnership with Point Washington Medical Clinic to support its services and shine a light on the powerful intersection of art, health, and community care.
We were equally proud to partner with Children’s Volunteer Health Network to launch Camp Girl Power, a new initiative designed to build confidence, resilience, and creative expression in young girls through a day of Artsbased empowerment programming. This collaboration exemplifies how the Arts can support mental, emotional, and physical wellness in our youngest community members, giving them tools to thrive in every area of life. These partnerships embody the spirit of what we strive for—Arts with heart and impact.
Behind every program, performance, exhibit, and initiative is a coalition of passionate artists, dedicated volunteers, generous donors, and engaged community members—people like you, who believe in the power of the Arts to inspire and uplift. I also need to give a shout out to the BEST team of staff and board members who daily put their heart into fulfilling our mission.
As you read through this annual report, I hope you feel the impact of your support. These pages highlight just a fraction of the creativity, collaboration, and care that defined our year. More than numbers and milestones, this report tells a story—one that continues to unfold, shaped by the voices and visions of our community.
Amidst all the accomplishments, collaborations and proven impact made, the Arts face drastic funding cuts at every public level. However, we are more committed than ever to advancing our mission, advocating for the Arts, and creating opportunities for all to engage in meaningful cultural experiences. And we need your support now more than ever. With your partnership, we’ll continue to make space for imagination, expression, and connection.
Thank you for standing with us. Thank you for believing in the Arts.
With gratitude,
JENNIFER STEELE, President & CEO Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County

As we step into a new year for the CAA, I am filled with gratitude and excitement for what’s ahead. For 33 years and counting, the CAA has been a cornerstone of creativity in our community and its impact continues to grow in inspiring ways.
I am honored to serve as the new Chair of the Board of Directors. Having worn many hats with the CAA—volunteer, staff member, and Event Director—I know firsthand the dedication it takes to deliver dynamic programs and unforgettable events. These efforts enrich the lives of our residents and visitors while showcasing the power of the Arts to bring people together, build connections, and spark inspiration.
With the visionary leadership of President & CEO Jennifer Steele and her talented team, the CAA has expanded its reach year after year. Yet, as funding support for the Arts declines, our future success relies on the collective strength of our community. This is where you come in. Our loyal members, generous donors, and passionate advocates have always been the heart of the CAA, and now more than ever, we need your help to carry this work forward. By spreading the word, engaging as a member, attending an event or inviting new donors to join us, you help ensure the CAA continues to thrive for decades to come.
Together, we can keep Walton County Creative— a vibrant, inspiring, and culturally rich place to call home. Thank you for your unwavering support, your energy, and your belief in the power of the Arts. Let’s make this year one to celebrate!

WHAT’S YOUR Art Story?
We believe that everyone is inherently creative. We asked CAA Lead Pottery Instructor, Jessica Batson to share her introduction to the Arts.
I was born into an artistic home. Once I could stand, my dad rigged up a tiny easel next to his so I could create with him. Growing up I was always involved in art camps and classes in all types of mediums. As a child I quickly learned that a request for a book or art supply always got a yes answer from my parents.
When I decided to pursue a Masters degree in Education I needed to find a new creative outlet. I joined a community pottery studio and started taking classes. I had done ceramics sporadically but became more committed to working on the wheel.
After returning to my hometown of Santa Rosa Beach, I found the tiny Pottery Shed at the CAA and started working with them teaching some wheel classes. Without realizing it I sort of fell into the role of Lead Instructor for the studio and moved with it as we changed locations and size. I’m excited to see how the pottery program is growing and evolving.
In a time where most of your day is about consuming content as fast as possible it is more important than ever to take time to create. Creating involves struggle and perseverance to reach mastery and I worry some of that is being lost in today's society. My hope is everyone finds time each day to create.
Down Island Gulf Seafood Restaurant is the brainchild of the late Chef Brannon Janca. Brannon, being a natural creative, always had a strong passion for the arts and loved our Gulf South community. After being inspired by the works of the Walter Anderson family and Shearwater Pottery in Ocean Springs, MS, Brannon became a self-taught potter and went on to make all of the water glasses and multiple tablewares for the restaurant.
When Chef Janca passed in 2023, his wife, Stefani donated his remaining clay and pottery materials to the Cultural Arts Alliance. Down Island is also proud to continue to showcase the work of other local potters in the restaurant. Stefani and the team at Down Island are honored to carry on Brannon’s legacy and vision of supporting the arts in our community.

Collaborations CROSS-SECTOR
The Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) and the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA) are proud to shine a spotlight on a partner whose expertise and dedication have been central to the success of the Underwater Museum of Art (UMA): Walter Marine / Reefmaker of Orange Beach, Alabama.
As the UMA’s deployment partner since its inception, Walter Marine has played an essential role in transforming artistic vision into lasting underwater installations. Their team brings unmatched knowledge in marine construction and reef building, assisting with everything from detailed planning to on-site fabrication. Each year, Walter Marine carefully creates and attaches the custom concrete pedestals that anchor every sculpture, ensuring the artworks are stable and remain environmentally compatible.
Once the sculptures are ready, Walter Marine meticulously loads them onto their specialized crane ship in Orange Beach for their journey across the Gulf. With careful precision, they place each piece in their permanent home one mile off the coast of Grayton Beach State Park, where they become part of the UMA’s one-of-a-kind underwater sculpture park.
Walter Marine’s commitment to excellence has been a cornerstone of the UMA project from day one. Their expertise not only ensures safe and successful deployments but also helps create thriving marine habitats that now support over 100 species of marine life.
The CAA and SWARA extend heartfelt thanks to Walter Marine/ Reefmaker for their unwavering partnership and for helping bring this extraordinary fusion of art and conservation to life.
COLLABORATIONS
CONT'D
Children’s Volunteer Health Network (CVHN) and the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County (CAA) excitedly partnered for Camp Girl Power, a free, joy-filled experience designed to spark creativity, confidence, and connection in rising 3rd–5th grade girls across Walton County.
Camp Girl Power blends the CAA’s mission to foster the inclusive and collaborative advancement of the Arts with CVHN’s commitment to supporting the health and well-being of local children. Together, creating an environment where girls can explore their imaginations, build self-esteem, and form meaningful friendships—all while discovering the transformative power of the Arts.
For the CAA, partnerships like this are a vital part of our work. Collaborating with mission-aligned organizations allows us to combine strengths, expand reach, and multiply impact. By working hand-in-hand with CVHN, we’re addressing important community needs in a creative, uplifting way, proving that when the arts intersect with health and wellness, lives are enriched far beyond the classroom or studio.
From hands-on arts projects and music to mindfulness and movement, the camp curriculum is designed to nurture both self-expression and resilience. The goal is simple yet powerful: to empower young girls with the tools, confidence, and community they need to thrive.
Through this collaboration, the CAA and CVHN are proud to shape a brighter, more connected future—one where the arts serve as a bridge to confidence, creativity, and lifelong well-being.
This program had generous support from the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation’s Galentines Fundraiser, The St. Joe Community Foundation, and Walmart. Additional support provided by 30A Company, Beach Happy Cafe, Detailed Creative, Eglin Federal Credit Union, Fishers Flowers & Events, Studio 30A, and Sweet Henrietta’s.
Dine + Dive UMA Fundraiser Event April
30, 2025
The Cultural Arts Alliance (CAA) and the South Walton Artificial Reef Association (SWARA) hosted the seventh annual fundraiser for the Underwater Museum of Art (UMA), drawing more than 300 guests for an evening of culinary creativity, fine wine, and live music by J & The Causeways. Guests also enjoyed an exclusive preview of several of the sculptures selected for the museum’s seventh installation before their journey to Grayton Beach State Park.
This year’s Dine + Dive event offered an unforgettable evening featuring a dozen tasting stations from celebrated local chefs, over 50 wines to sample, and continuous live music that kept the energy flowing all night long.
As the nation’s first permanent underwater museum, the UMA uniquely combines art and conservation—transforming sculptures into living reefs that provide valuable habitat and resources for more than 100 species of marine life. This year’s art works will join the 47 works previously deployed 58 feet beneath the surface, creating a one-of-a-kind cultural and ecological destination that supports both marine ecosystems and education while contributing to the local economy. Proceeds from Dine + Dive ensure this innovative fusion of creativity and conservation continues to grow, inspire, and thrive for years to come.

New this year, the Holiday Artist Market offers a chance to shop small and local for unique, handcrafted gifts, with professional artists and makers showcasing their work. Plus, Santa will make a special appearance for festive photo ops—the perfect way to capture a little holiday magic.
Flutterby holds a special place in the CAA’s history. First launched in the early 1990s, it was one of the organization’s founding events, created to raise funds for school art programs. More than three decades later, the festival continues that legacy—offering free admission, inspiring the next generation of artists, and supporting the CAA’s mission to foster creativity and advance the arts across Walton County.

Back in 2010, I started observing the reflections in the dune lakes along 30A. At the right angle and with the right lighting, it looked as if there were guitar shapes appearing. These images in my mind would become a huge inspiration in my woodcut pieces. They were also the subject of my first solo art show in South Walton in conjunction with the 30A Songwriters Festival, and also my first backdrop painting in 2011. It just seemed like the perfect visual description of the weekend. I was honored to reimagine that first backdrop for the 2026 official event artwork.

BEYOND BARS:
A Songwriting Prison Art Program at Walton Correctional Institution
Excerpt from "Beyond Bars Prison Program - Reflection"
by Sammi Accola, October 2025
The first time I witnessed the Cultural Arts Alliances’ Beyond Bars prison songwriting program, was a concert in January 2025. What I experienced was incomparable joy, a new depth of sadness, and a hope so big in my chest that was undeniably rooting for guys I had barely even met.
It’s certainly not an event for those who do not want to be changed. But believe me, you’ve got to see it with your own eyes.
Well, try to…close your eyes…but also maybe squint so you can keep reading…now, imagine…
Grown men cheering in solidarity as brothers perform (many for the first time) their most vulnerable stories, mind-melting breakthroughs, and celebratory anthems. Poetic justice is served. It breaks your heart and puts it right back together at the same time.
This particular time around, their songs covered themes of finding safety inside their minds, desires to be a “superman” for their families, commissary jingles, and welcoming their arms wide with tearjerking hooks like “my name is Big House, my heart is your home”...coming from one of the toughestlooking men in the room!
I feel blessed to have been invited into this incredible program, but also for the teachings and lessons I’m learning from the lead songwriter and co-founder of Beyond Bars, Caitlin Cannon.
Caitlin and I practically met the night before the program started, and I will tell you–driving from Santa Rosa Beach to Walton Correctional Institution (a 45-minute drive) for 2 weeks straight gives plenty of time to get to know someone. But I’m so thankful it was her.
Caitlin has a brother in the system, and a painfully unique lens to tell the truth about the prison system and prepare those entering it. Every day I had a bucket full of random questions because there is simply nothing like that environment–and most mornings after we prepared the morning’s lesson, she would need silence.
It was humorous, but it was honest. A sobering reminder of the intensity of the work we were about to do...

Public Spaces ART IN
Two Murals Created By International Street Artist Kelsey Montague
The CAA added two vibrant new masterpieces to Walton County’s cultural landscape, marking another bold milestone for its Art in Public Spaces program. Internationally renowned street artist Kelsey Montague, known for her larger-than-life, interactive murals, has brought her signature style — and her famous wings — to the The Pavilion at Watersound® Town Center at 85 Origins Main Street and the newly opened Grayton Beach Central Parking Facility on County Road 283 South. These colorful, joy-filled works are designed not just to be seen, but to be experienced — encouraging visitors and locals alike to step in, snap a photo, and quite literally become part of the art.
Kelsey Montague believes that art should not be separated from the human experience, but that the human experience should have a hand in creating art itself. Kelsey has painted large-scale, interactive street murals around the world including in Istanbul, New York City, Los Angeles, Singapore, Sydney, Cape Town, and Buenos Aires. Each piece has provided an opportunity for thousands of people to become living works of art. Participants are invited to step into the artwork, explore what inspires them and post pictures on social media in the hashtag #WhatLiftsYou.
Kelsey began her #WhatLiftsYou movement in Manhattan 11 years ago with large-scale murals of her iconic wings. Celebrities including Kendall Jenner, Vanessa Hudgens and Jessica Biel have posed with the street art wings while media outlets like The New York Times, Forbes and The Today Show have featured her work. In 2019 Taylor Swift commissioned Kelsey to create a winged mural to help launch her ‘ME!’ single in Nashville. Early in 2020, the NFL chose Kelsey — the only female artist selected — to create pieces for the Super Bowl in Miami.
“We were absolutely thrilled to collaborate with Kelsey Montague on this mural for Grayton Central. Her inspiring vision and unique artistry align perfectly with the vibrant spirit of South Walton, and we couldn’t be more excited to see this beautiful piece come to life in our community,” said Kelli Carter, Director of Marketing, Walton County Tourism.
"We are thrilled to support another inspiring public art project through the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County," said April Wilkes, Executive Director of the St. Joe Community Foundation. "Ms. Montague’s butterfly mural feels like a natural extension of the Watersound® Monarch Art Trail and offers a beautiful space for both the community and visitors to create lasting memories."
The murals, produced in partnership with Walton County Tourism and the St. Joe Community Foundation, wonderfully express the theme of connectivity and relationship among humans, nature, and our built environment, and the CAA is grateful to be a part of this important project that provides connection for our community.
“Public art has the power to spark joy, curiosity, and connection — and Kelsey’s work does all of that and more,” said Courtney Malone, CAA Director of Programs and Creative Placemaking. “These murals don’t just beautify a wall; they invite people to stop, engage, and share a moment with their surroundings and each other. That’s exactly what our Art in Public Spaces program is all about.”
The CAA’s Art in Public Spaces program aims to make art accessible to all by placing it where daily life happens — in parks, along sidewalks, on buildings, and in community gathering spaces. The initiative fosters collaboration, celebrates local culture, encourages tourism, stimulates the economy, and transforms public areas into shared sources of pride. From sculptures and murals to installations and performance spaces, the program works to ensure art is woven into the fabric of Walton County for residents and visitors to enjoy year-round.

Rooted in History, Anchored in Community
Anchored in Freeport is the newest addition to the CAA's ever-growing Art in Public Spaces program — joining other celebrated initiatives like the Underwater Museum of Art, the Watersound® Monarch Art Trail, the U.S. Highway 98 Pedestrian Underpass and a county-wide mural series.
In partnership with the City of Freeport, this creative placemaking project transforms 4.5-foot concrete anchors into captivating works of art designed by talented local artists. Each anchor tells a story — connecting Freeport’s rich maritime history with its vibrant present and exciting future.
Freeport’s heritage stretches back to the 1830s, when settlers were drawn to its natural harbors — vital hubs for commerce and transportation. The anchor, a symbol of stability and strength, represents that history while also signaling the city’s growth and evolution.
This is more than beautification — it’s a celebration of place, a bridge between past and future, and an open invitation for connection.

Recognizing the need to expand its reach beyond a single location, the CAA has transformed The Foster Gallery into a Visual Arts Outreach Program that brings art into the heart of the community. This initiative allows artists to display and sell their work in multiple locations throughout Walton County, making art more accessible to diverse audiences.
Through this expanded model, the Visual Arts program continues to support artists while enhancing public spaces with vibrant, thought-provoking artwork. Each location offers a unique environment where visitors can engage with art in new and meaningful ways. From solo showcases to group exhibitions, our curated selection of works offer a dynamic mix of perspectives and mediums that reflect the rich tapestry of human experience. Each rotation brings new styles, and voices demonstrating the diversity and fresh perspectives of our regional creative community.
