THE RESTAURANT WORKER NEWSLETTER: #1
9/19/2023
The Culinary Union is fighting to protect workers as the industry implemented large scale reductions in restaurants post-pandemic, brought in new technology that impacted jobs, and ended daily room cleaning which increased workloads. Meanwhile, companies are growing and profit margin and room rates are 30% over pre-pandemic levels. Culinary Union estimates there are nearly 10,000 non-union restaurant workers on the Strip working for large corporate-owned restaurants. Non-union workers cannot bargain for raises, are not guaranteed free family health insurance, seniority rights, and don’t have representation. It’s time to change that!
“Non-union workers deserve the strong union standard and should be paid the same so that we can provide for our families! We have to protect our union standards in this city and continue to build power in order to stand up to these giant restaurant corporations! Union and non-union restaurant workers are united to win! ONE JOB SHOULD BE ENOUGH!” - Paul Anthony, Bellagio food server
NEW: The Culinary and Bartenders Unions have launched an organizing drive to unionize non-union restaurant workers on the Las Vegas Strip beginning with Eataly Las Vegas at the Park MGM and Alexxa’s at the Paris Casino. Here are some brave committee leaders: “I’m a single mom. I live with my mother and my daughter who also works at Eataly, but her income is to pay for her education, so I’m taking care of the rest: Rent, groceries, and bills, and it is hard to make ends meet when your paycheck is not enough to cover everything.” - Roselia, Eataly Las Vegas
