JonesreceivedhisBA(1964)fromRiceUniversityandhisMD(1968)fromthe UniversityofTexasSouthwesternMedicalSchoolatDallas.Hecompletedhis internshipandresidencyinpediatrics(1971)atCUSchoolofMedicineandThe Children’sHospitalunderC.HenryKempe,MD.AftertwoyearsintheU.S. ArmyMedicalCorp,hereturnedtoColoradotocompleteafellowshipin neonatal-perinatalmedicineunderFrederickC.Battaglia,MD(1975).In1975, hewasappointedassistantprofessorofpediatricsatCUSchoolofMedicine.In 1977,hemovedtoTheJohnsHopkinsUniversitySchoolofMedicineand Hospitalwhereheeventuallybecameprofessorofpediatrics,directorofthe neonatalintensivecareunit,directoroftheEudowoodNeonatalPulmonary Division,associateprofessorintheDepartmentofAnesthesiologyandCritical CareMedicineandassistantprofessorintheDepartmentofGynecologyand Obstetrics.HereturnedtoColoradoin1990toassumetherolesofChairofthe DepartmentofPediatricsandPediatricianinChief.

Joneshasauthored,co-authored,editedorco-editedover150scholarly publications,twobooksandanon-lineclinicaldecisionsupportresource.He hasbeenchairoftheboardofdirectorsoftheAmericanBoardofPediatrics andchaireditsSubspecialtyCommitteeandtheResidencyReviewand RedesigninPediatrics(R3P)project.Heservedasmemberandthenchairof theReviewCommitteeforPediatricsoftheAccreditationCouncilforGraduate MedicalEducation(ACGME).Amongotherawards,hehasreceivedtheKempe ProfessionalServiceAward,theHighHopesAwardfromtheChildren’s DiabetesFoundationandtheJosephW.St.Geme,Jr.LeadershipAwardfrom theFederationofPediatricOrganizations,theJamesE.StrainAwardfromthe Children’sHospital,andtheCareerTeachingScholarAwardfromthe DepartmentofPediatrics,CUSchoolofMedicine.Hecurrentlyservesasan associateeditoroftheJournalofGraduateMedicalEducation.UponJones’ retirementfromChairoftheDepartmentofPediatrics,CUhonoredhis distinguishedcareerwithafestschriftsymposiumtitled,“TheFutureof Pediatrics.”TheproceedingswerepublishedintheJournalofPediatrics.Most recently,JonesandhisfamilyendowedachairinmedicaleducationatCU SchoolofMedicine,oneofafewinthenationdedicatedtothesupportof medicaleducation.

OlletenCate,PhD,isoneoftheworld’spre eminentexpertsinmedicaleducation.Heh authoredover350manuscriptsonavariety medicaleducationtopicsandiscreditedwith describingtheconceptofentrustableprofess activities(EPAs).Amonghismanyinterests competency-basedmedicaleducation,curr developmentandpeerteaching.Duringhis meetwithmedicaleducatorsfromtheDepa SchoolofMedicine.

TenCateattendedmedicalschoolattheUn y , theNetherlands,andspenthisprofessionallifefrom1980servingmedical education.In1986hecompletedaPhDdissertationonpeerteachingin medicaleducation.Until1999hewascloselyinvolvedwithalltheUniversity ofAmsterdam’smajorpreclinicalandclinicalcurriculumreforms,education research,programevaluationandeducationaldevelopment.In1999hewas appointedfullprofessorofmedicaleducationatUtrechtUniversity,and programdirectorofundergraduatemedicaleducationatUniversityMedical CenterUtrecht(UMCU).From2005–17hewasfounderanddirectorofthe CenterforResearchandDevelopmentofEducationatUMCU.Hisresearch interestsincludecurriculumdevelopment,peerteaching,competency-based medicaleducationandmanyothertopicsinhealthprofessionseducation.

From2006–12heservedaspresidentoftheNetherlandsAssociationfor MedicalEducation(NVMO).In2012hewasappointedadjunctprofessorof medicineattheUniversityofCalifornia,SanFranciscoandexecuteda collaborativedoctoralprograminhealthprofessionseducation.Hehas publishedextensivelyinthemedicaleducationliterature(350+),supervises manydoctoralstudentsinhealthprofessionseducationresearch(30+current andpast)andreceivednumerousinternationalinvitationstospeak.Heserves ontheeditorialboardsof Medical Teacher andthe Journal of Graduate Medical Education andisafellowoftheAssociationforMedicalEducationin Europe.In2017,hereceivedtheJohnP.HubbardAwardoftheU.S.National BoardofMedicalExaminersforhisworkrelatedtoassessmentinmedical education,theNVMOHanMollPenninglife-timeawardforservicestohealth professionseducationdevelopmentandresearchandin2018thefirst biennialinternationalIanR.HartAwardforinnovationinmedicaleducation.

TheM.DouglasJones,Jr.,MDLectureshipwasestablishedbythe DepartmentofPediatricstocelebrateJones’passionforandsupportof medicaleducationduringhislongcareerattheUniversityofColorado.This inauguraleventisintendedtoadvanceoureducationaleffortsbybringing aprominenteducatortoourcampusandalsorecognizeapromisingjunior facultymemberwithinthedepartmentwhoismakingoutstanding contributionstooureducationalprograms.Thelectureshipisalso supportedbytheSectionofNeonatology.Forcontributionsormore informationabouthowtosupporttheM.DouglasJones,Jr.,MD Lectureship,pleasecontact:
