JohnJ.Conger,PhD,wasagiftedleaderwhojoinedtheUniversityof ColoradoSchoolofMedicineasaprofessorofclinicalpsychologyin1953. Hededicated24yearsofhiscareerinvaryingcapacitiesrangingfromchief oftheDivisionofClinicalPsychologyintheDepartmentofPsychiatryto deanoftheSchoolofMedicine,vice-presidentformedicalaffairs,and actingchancelloroftheHealthSciencesCenter.
BeforecomingtoColorado,CongergraduatedfromYaleUniversityand servedintheU.S.NavyduringWorldWarIIasthecommanderofadestroyer escortattheageof25.AfterreceivinghisPhDinclinicalpsychologyfromYale Universityin1948andservingonthefacultyofIndianaUniversityin1951,he wasnamedthefirstchiefpsychologistoftheU.S.NavalAcademy.
Adistinguishedscholarandresearcher,Congerfocusedmuchofhiscareeron childmentalhealthpolicyandtheoverwhelminggapbetweendiagnosisand treatmentofmentalhealthproblems.Hewastheco-authorofthemost influentialtextbooksonchildandadolescentdevelopmentofhisgeneration andreceivedanawardforDistinguishedContributionstoPublicPolicyfor ChildrenfromtheSocietyforResearchinChildDevelopment.Hisresearch led,amongotherareas,tohisinvolvementwiththePresidentialTaskForce onHighwaySafety,settingstandardsformotorvehiclesafetyincludingseat belts,airbags,collapsiblesteeringcolumnsandimprovedhighwaydesign.
Congerservedonnumerousprestigiousnationalandinternational committeesincludingPresidentCarter’sCommissiononMentalHealth.He wasalsopresidentoftheAmericanPsychologicalAssociationandchairman ofanadvisorycommitteeattheJohnF.KennedyCenteronEducationand HumanDevelopment.From1959–61,hewasspecialconsultanttothe DivisionofResearchGrantsfortheNationalInstitutesofHealth.AttheJohn D.andCatherineT.MacArthurFoundation,Congerservedasvice-president anddirectoroftheHealthProgram.
CongerwasamemberoftheGovernor’sCommitteeonMentalHealthfor ColoradoandchairmanfortheMentalHealthAdvisoryGroupfortheColorado DepartmentofPublicHealthAssociationfrom1957–61.Healsoreceived numerousnotableawardsthroughouthiscareer,includingtheUniversityof ColoradoMedalin1986foroutstandingachievementanddistinguished contributionstothewelfareoftheUniversity,thestateandthenation.
TheChancellor’sJohnJ.CongerLectureshipandVisitingProfessorshipat theUniversityofColoradowasendowedbytheCongerFamilyandBonnie Camp,MD,PhD,tofollowConger’sleadinpromotingawarenessofthe plightofchildrenandfacilitatingcontinuedimprovementinhumanhealth anddevelopment.

EarlsreceivedherABinbiologyin1976fromtheCollegeoftheHolyCross inWorcester,Massachusetts,hermasteroftheologicalstudies(MTS)in 1978fromHarvardDivinitySchool,HarvardUniversityandherMDfrom theUniversityofMassachusettsin1984.Sheisaclinicalprofessorof pediatricsfortheUniversityofNorthCarolinaSchoolofMedicine.
