AboutAbbyStoddard

Over30yearsago,TheChildren’sHospitalandDivisionofPediatric Neurologywerefortunateandprivilegedtodevelopaclose relationshipwithMr.RickStoddardandhisfamily,especiallyhis daughter,Abby.AbbywasapatientatTheChildren’sHospitaland hadrequiredneurologicalandneurosurgicalcareforanextended periodoftimebeginningwhenshewas10daysold.Shewas subsequentlyfollowedregularlyforseveralyearsintheneurology andneurosurgicalclinics.In1992,Mr.Stoddardandhisfamily approachedtheDivisionofPediatricNeurologyaboutmakinga contributiontothehospitalinAbby’shonorandinrecognitionofthe excellentcareshehadreceived.Afterconsideringseveralpossible options,Mr.StoddarddecidedtoendowtheannualAbbyStoddard VisitingProfessorshipandLectureshipbeginningin1993withthe goalofbringingimportant,internationalleadersinthefieldof pediatricneurologytoChildren’sHospitalsothatourtraineesand facultycouldmeetthemandobservetheminteractwithfamiliesand sharetheirknowledgeandexperiences.

Thisprogramfromitsinceptionwasdesignedtogobeyonddivisional anddepartmentalboundariesatTheChildren’sHospitaltoinclude membersoftheadultneurologydepartmentattheuniversity; communityandregionalpediatricneurologists,pediatricians,nurses, primarycareprovidersandadultneurologists;divisionswithshared clinicalinterestsandgroupswithoverlappingresearchinterests.

Nowinits31styear,theAbbyStoddardLectureshipandVisiting ProfessorshipatChildren'sHospitalColoradocontinuestoprovide residentsandstudentstheopportunitiestoobservemasterclinicianteachersinterviewchildrenandfamilies,examinechildrenofallages, andformulateanddiscussclinicalcasespresentedtothem.In additiontothecasepresentations,eachofourvisitingprofessorshas givenPediatricGrandRoundsandhasmadebedsideroundson wardsinthehospitalwhereadditionalcasesandclinicaldiscussions takeplace.Duringeachlectureship,timeisarrangedforour residents,fellowsandstudentstomeetandtalkwithourvisiting professorinaninformalsettingtodiscusscareerchoices, professionaldevelopmentandothertopicsthattheychoose.

ProfessorofPediatrics,Radio ClinicalNeurosciencesatthe ofCalgaryandanattendingP NeurologistattheAlbertaCh HeholdstheDr.RobertHasla NeurologyandservesattheDeputyHead(Research)fortheDepartment ofPediatrics.Dr.Kirton’sresearchfocusesonapplyingtechnologies includingneuroimaging,non-invasivebrainstimulation,andbrain computerinterfacestomeasureandmodulatetheresponseofthe developingbraintoearlyinjurytogeneratenewtherapiesand opportunitiesforlifeparticipationfordisabledchildren.Heservedasthe inauguralboardchairandvicepresidentoftheInternationalPediatric StrokeOrganization(internationalpediatricstroke.org,@curekidstroke). Dr.KirtondirectstheCalgaryPediatricStrokeProgram (perinatalstroke.com,@PedStrokeYYC),AlbertaPerinatalStrokeProject, theUniversityofCalgaryNon-invasiveNeurostimulationNetwork(N3), andtheACHBrainComputerInterfaceLaboratory(BCI4kids.com, @BCI4kids).
