Welcome to the College of the Arts Spring 2025 Season. As we come together to enjoy incredible art, dance, music and theatre programming from across the college, I know we are all still reeling from the recent fires that tore through the communities of Altadena and Pacific Palisades. In many ways, we are all Angelenos and when our city breaks, we break. Many of our students, faculty, and staff are finding comfort in processing complex thoughts and emotions the only way we know how: through the arts. It is our calling and what ties us to our community. Through our programming, we hope to provide a bit of respite to all of you during this time of regrouping and rebuilding.

In the College of the Arts, every note, every movement, and every word spoken on stage brings opportunity for discovery and connection. Whether you are a fellow Titan, family member, or community supporter, we are thrilled to have you here. You are now part of something much larger than this single performance. You are joining a vibrant and diverse collective of artists and technicians working together to push the boundaries of their craft.

Spring 2025 brings us a season of fresh programming to challenge our perceptions and immerse us in new perspectives. Later this month, the School of Music presents “Hajar,” a contemporary opera synthesizing ancient Jewish and Islamic stories into a modern immigration tale. Theatre begins their season with “Significant Other,” a heartfelt tale of love and longing in 21st century New York City. If you haven’t yet seen our spectacular new gallery building, make time to see “Chris O’Leary: Gravity Well” – an exploration of the cosmic phenomena of gravitational waves using video, sound, and images. In May, our dancers and choreographers return to the intimate Hallberg Theatre in “Spring Dance Theatre: From All Sides,” where viewers will experience a variety of dance forms from every angle of the stage.

It takes more than just the emotional support of friends, family, professors, and mentors to enable students to take creative risks of expression. As a college, we remain committed to providing these aspiring arts professionals with scholarships, financial assistance, and the industry-ready equipment, facilities, and opportunities to further develop their skills outside the classroom. Our resolve is steadfast, but we need your continued support to sustain and expand our educational mission, ensuring our students have the tools necessary to succeed. needle & thread

JOCELYN HAGEN

“needle & thread” is the tenth of the thirteen choral and solo movements that comprise This is How You Love, co-composed by Jocelyn Hagen and Timothy C. Takach in 2017 for the 25th anniversary season of The Esoterics, based in Seattle and directed by Eric Banks. The short poem by Amanda Lovelace, originally printed in the shape of a heart, employs a metaphor of sewing to explore the idea of a relationship that begins as mutual support (“mend[ing]…two broken hearts”) and progresses to loving attachment (“stitching them together”).

Dream of Me as Water (U.S. premiere) STUART BEATCH

“Dream of Me as Water” was commissioned and premiered in 2024 by Tone Cluster, a queer choir in Ottawa, Canada, directed by Deirdre Kellerman. For a concert on the theme of water, they wanted

to explore the idea of water as “a metaphor for sexuality and gender fluidity.” The poem is by Vancouver-based poet David Ly. The composer writes, “David’s poetry often hints at something monstrous (perhaps a yassified Creature from the Black Lagoon?) but as we plunge into the depths, the language here is undeniably deep, rich, and comforting…. The music gradually moves from rhythmic instability and brightness in the first half, to stability and darkness in the second half. By the end of the piece, we have reemerged as something new and grounded, transformed into the fullest version of our queer selves.”

Wild Forces

JAKE RUNESTAD

Wild Forces, composed by Jake Runestad (b. 1986) in 2015, is the second movement of a larger work called The Hope of Loving. This six movement work pulls poetry from Daniel Ladinsky’s Love Poems from God: Twelve Sacred Voices from the East and West. Wild Forces uses Ladinsky’s translation of a poem by St. Francis of Assisi, the saint of animals and the environment. Runestad creates a liberating freedom through a driving rhythmic force for the heartbeat of the piece.

Only in Sleep ĒRIKS EŠENVALDS

The University of Louisville Collegiate Chorale and Cardinal Singers commissioned Only in Sleep in 2010. A soprano soloist begins the poem as chorus accompanies her on a soft hum. Throughout the piece, the chorus sets the tone of a dream through a soft accompaniment as the soloist recollects their stories from childhood.

Water Fountain

NATHAN BRENNER AND MERRILL GARBUS, ARR. KRISTOPHER FULTON

Experimental musician Merril Garbus wrote Water Fountain in 2013 with co-writer Nathan Brenner during a drought. Garbus was inspired to write this song as she considered what the world would be like without mutual aid or social support. Her band, The Tuneyards, premiered the song. Fultun (b. unknown) wrote this arrangement for the Vancouver Youth Choir, who premiered it at ACDA National in 2019.
