A DEDICATED CAREER: CELEBRATING KEVIN ACKLEY’S LEGACY AT GOGGIN ICE CENTER
After nearly two decades of profound dedication to ice sports and the Miami University community, Kevin Ackley, a familiar and respected face at the Goggin Ice Center, is beginning a new professional chapter. Known for his steadfast leadership, genuine character, and commitment to excellence, Ackley leaves behind a legacy that has shaped not just the ice rink, but generations of athletes, staff, and families in Oxford.
What initially brought Ackley to Goggin was a passion for “ working in ice sports and with the Miami community.” One of his earliest memories includes the hard work and teamwork it took to open the new Goggin facility for its first summer, and the success of those early Hockey Camps that helped kids gain confidence while being away from home.
While the tools and methods have changed, Ackley emphasizes that the mission has remained steady: “How we accomplish the task has changed, but we are still service-oriented and have a standard of excellence.” It’s that commitment to service, excellence, and the people that kept him at Goggin for so long, making Oxford and Miami “a great place to work and start a family.”
Among Ackley’s proudest achievements are the exponential growth of Miami Youth Hockey (MYH) and the rise of Goggin’s American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) teams. MYH expanded from just 20 participants in 2006 to a full suite of travel and house league teams, building a strong pipeline for local talent and community engagement.
Simultaneously, the ACHA club program grew under Ackley’s leadership, evolving from one men's team to four competitive squads — two men’s and two women’s teams. The Women’s D1 team celebrated three national championships, while the Men’s D2 team achieved two national runner-up finishes, securing Goggin’s national reputation as a hub for excellence in club hockey.
Ackley credits several key figures for influencing his approach to leadership and success:
• Cody Powell – For analytical goal-setting.
• Doug Curry – For demonstrating patience and calmness.
• Mitch Korn – For emphasizing preparation.
• Steve Cady – For modeling integrity and excellence.
A personal favorite tradition of Ackley’s is the “Ice Out Grill Out ”, a casual and heartfelt gathering with staff to celebrate the end of the season. More than a tradition, it represents the camaraderie, trust, and shared purpose that defined his years at Goggin.
What will he miss most? “The commitment to the building, each other, and excellence.” And when asked how he hopes to be remembered, he answered simply: “Committed, honest, and dedicated to Goggin and their success.”
Here are some kind words for those who worked alongside him:
“ Thank you Kevin for a great 19 years at Goggin and Miami. Your drive helped shape the ‘New Goggin’ into one of the best-run ice arenas in the country. Your vision and dedication to Goggin’s student and community programs has positively impacted the lives of a generation of hockey players, ice skaters, and Miamians. We will all miss you and wish you and your family the best in your new adventure.”
— Jon Elliott
“At first, I was led to believe Kevin was an intimidating boss. After I began working here, I realized that could not be further from the truth. Kevin was nothing short of kind, understanding, and patient with me. He went out of his way to help me not only in my duties here at the ice arena, but offered to do everything in his power to help me advance my career in the hockey world, providing both connections and opportunities, as well as great advice. I have only been here for a year, but he has left his mark on me and he will be greatly missed.”
— Coulter Pfeiffer
Continued on the following page...
“Kevin, congratulations on the next chapter for you and your family! We had so many good years together — from getting that amazing new facility online to continuing the Goggin legacy. Thank you for always pushing me to grow and expand in my role at Goggin. Great memories and experiences. Best wishes for an amazing new future.”
— Much love, Ronda Strunk
Ackley’s career shift is rooted in a desire to be closer to family while continuing to evolve professionally. He’s returning to his roots, working specifically in the hockey side of the rink industry — and relocating to Warroad, Minnesota, a city known for producing top-tier hockey talent.
“Ice hockey is my passion,” he says. The lessons and values learned at Goggin — attention to detail, preparation, and excellence — are values he will carry with him into this next role. His parting advice to new team members:
“Prepare early, enjoy the process, and be mindful of the details — then the outcome will be excellent.”
As Kevin Ackley turns the page on his time at Miami, his legacy will continue to ripple through the people and programs he helped shape. From the youth who learned to skate under his guidance to the staff he mentored and supported, Kevin’s imprint will remain firmly embedded in the fabric of Goggin Ice Center.
Thank you, Kevin, for 19 years of excellence, vision, and heart. You will be deeply missed — and always remembered.

Originally from India, Priya Chugh pursued her undergraduate degree at Mumbai University and her master's degree at the University of Essex, Colchester, United Kingdom. She came to the U.S. over a decade ago as an international student and found that “the campus quickly became [her] home away from home.”
With a master’s in biotechnology and experience spanning food service, student services, and campus bookstores, she’s discovered her passion in roles where community, identity, and support converge. She describes campus retail as “where students find their identity, faculty find resources, and alumni return to reconnect,” a space she’s eager to shape at Brick & Ivy with warmth and creativity.
Priya is drawn to merchandise that is “versatile, timeless, and showcases school pride with a modern twist,” like a classic university crewneck or a stylish hat. Priya believes “campus retail is so much more than merchandise, it’s about spirit, identity, and connection.”
What she looks forward to most, she shares, is being “most excited to immerse [herself] in the spirit and traditions of Miami University. It’s a school with a rich history and strong sense of identity, and [she’s] looking forward to building relationships with students, faculty, and staff while helping the store thrive.” Priya’s goal for Brick & Ivy Campus Store is to foster that same sense of belonging behind the counter she once felt as a student.
Be sure to stop by Brick & Ivy to welcome Priya and get some fun Miami gear!

NEW DETECTIVES
MIAMI UNIVERSITY WELCOMES WALT SCHNEIDER AS NEW EMERGENCY MANAGER
Miami University is pleased to announce the return of Walt Schneider as the new emergency manager. Walt brings with him a wealth of experience from a distinguished 25-year career with the Miami University Police Department, where he most recently served as detective sergeant, day shift supervisor and forensic examiner. Prior to that, he spent 11 years as a detective with MUPD.
After retiring in January 2025, Walt has rejoined the Miami community with a renewed focus on campus safety, specifically in disaster preparedness and emergency education.
As emergency manager, Walt will lead the university’s efforts in emergency planning, raise awareness about weather-related emergencies and promote training initiatives to prepare the Miami community for active threat scenarios and other critical incidents.
We encourage everyone to explore the available resources and training opportunities to stay informed and prepared:
• Active Threat Training
• Information on Weather Emergencies
• Rave Guardian Safety App
• Miami University Police Safety Presentations
The MUPD is proud to announce the assignment of two officers to the detective bureau. These officers have shown a consistent dedication to detail and ability to solve cases. Please join us in congratulating Detective Nelda Mattison and Detective Brodie Holsapple on their new assignments.
Detective Mattison has been a police officer for over 14 years and has served the Miami community for the past four years. She has experience as a sexual assault investigator, crime prevention specialist, Field Training Officer, Crisis Intervention Team member, and a narcotics K-9 handler. Additionally, she is a certified Evidence Technician, a certified ALICE Instructor, and an IPMBA-certified bike officer.
Detective Holsapple has been with the MUPD since 2023 and brings 18 years of law enforcement experience to the bureau. Since completing his police academy at the top of his class, he has been known for his calm presence, attention to detail, and natural leadership. He is also a certified ALICE Instructor, a certified School Resource Officer, and a Field Training Officer.
These assignments reflect not only their accomplishments but also their continued commitment to the safety and security of the campus. We look forward to the positive impact Detectives Mattison and Holsapple will make in their new roles for the next three years.
Please share your congratulations when you see them around campus!

BEHIND THE SCENES: TERRY MOORE, CHIEF AUDIT OFFICER
As Miami’s Chief Audit Officer, Terry Moore leads the University’s internal audit function, providing independent assurance and advisory services to help leadership manage risk, improve operations, and achieve goals.
Terry holds several professional credentials, including Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), and Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA). He is also an active member of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE), and the Association of College and University Auditors (ACUA).
His Miami journey began as a student intern in the very office he now leads. A Farmer School of Business graduate, he earned his Bachelor of Science in Business with a major in Accountancy, graduating cum laude.
Terry also supports the University’s enterprise risk management program and serves as a Senior Department Lean Leader, helping drive continuous improvement.
A recent highlight for his team — which includes Kristen Smythe and Jim Huth — was earning the highest possible rating from the IIA during a rigorous Quality Assurance Review, often called an “audit of the auditors.” This rating reflects the team’s commitment to excellence and adherence to global standards.
Despite the serious nature of the work, Terry brings fun to the office with a weekly riddle or trivia posted on the team whiteboard — an open invitation for anyone to stop by and give it a try.
FLOUR POWER: DINING LEADERS BOND OVER FRIENDLY BAKE-OFF
Leaders in residential Dining Services are turning up the summer heat with some friendly baking competitions! First up on the menu: Sugar Cream Pie. Why sugar cream pie, you ask? Well, we’re blaming it on Amy Allen and Caitlyn Brock — both proud Hoosiers — and as true Indiana natives, they brought the official state pie to the spotlight.
We had five brave participants in this round, each bringing their own sweet twist to the challenge. Our brave taste testers (a.k.a. our sugar-fueled judges) were Chef Rouse and Supervisor Tiffany Beare. After some good laughs, a few sugar highs, and serious deliberation, Harley Olander, Assistant Dining Director from Western, was crowned our pie champion!
Of course, in true bake-off spirit, everyone’s a winner (but Harley gets bragging rights and the honor of choosing our next challenge).
Up next? Banana Bread! Stay tuned — we can’t wait to see how many ways we can mash, mix, and bake this classic.
We had a blast, and more than anything, it was a great bonding experience full of fun and flour. Let the baking continue!

MIAMI UNIVERSITY SUSTAINABILITY
INVITES YOU TO JOIN THE PLASTIC FREE JULY 2025 CHALLENGE
‘Small steps, big difference’: The global movement this year focuses on reducing use of the top three single-use plastic items
With 174 million participants globally last year, Plastic Free July is the world’s largest plastic waste avoidance campaign. This award-winning behavior change campaign — now in its 15th year — empowers communities, corporations, and governments to take action to reduce plastic waste.
The Miami University Office of Sustainability first introduced the Plastic Free July challenge to the Miami community in 2019. The goal is to challenge people to reduce and refuse single-use plastics and build sustainable habits.
Since then, “an astonishing 10 billion kg (22 billion pounds) of household waste has been avoided by participants over the last five years because millions of people choose to make a change for cleaner streets, healthy oceans, and beautiful communities, or just to do the right thing,” according to the Plastic Free July Foundation.
Choose one single-use plastic to avoid, or take the pledge to avoid single-use cups, plastic drink bottles, or plastic food wrap and bags. According to Plastic Free July, these “top three” items are singleuse plastic items we commonly use each day that often can be easily replaced with reusable options.
Miami Sustainability is taking the challenge
The Office of Sustainability encourages the Miami community to take the Plastic Free July challenge
“Plastic Free July is an invitation to start taking action with one small step,” Olivia Herron, director of the Office of Sustainability, said. “Your small steps in July, such as choosing reusable shopping bags, could turn into a lifelong habit.”
Taking steps to use reusable containers — instead of single-use ones — can make it more likely that others will do so as well. Research has demonstrated a strong impact on social norms, according to the Plastic Free July Foundation.
“Sign up and get tips and ideas to reduce plastic waste at your office,” said Alex Miller, sustainability engagement coordinator, “such as reducing plastic use in your workplace kitchen or inviting colleagues to join Plastic Free July.”
• Small steps: Avoid using plastic bottles, disposable plastic cups, and plastic bags or wraps in July.
• Take the Plastic Free July pledge.
• Can’t avoid it? Recycle those plastic items that are used
• Recycling bins on campus: Miami University’s waste hauling provider, Rumpke Waste & Recycling, accepts certain plastic items for recycling. Place these in your office’s recycling bins: plastic bottles, jugs, tubs, and disposable cups (not colored party cups). Check the list of accepted items on the Sustainability at Miami website.
• Try a Hefty ReNew bag for certain hard-to-recycle items: Rumpke customers can collect hard-to-recycle items — like foam takeout containers, plastic utensils, and plastic grocery bags — in orange Hefty ReNew bags. The Hefty ReNew bags are picked up by Rumpke with the regular recycling collection, whether curbside in your neighborhood or on campus. Start a ReNew bag in your office and place it near your recycling bin. Order a free Hefty ReNew starter kit online, or contact the Office of Sustainability for a starter bag for your office.

EXCITING CHANGES COMING TO NORTH QUAD DINING THIS FALL
Big things are happening on North Quad this fall! Miami University Dining Services is rolling out several major updates aimed at enhancing student convenience and expanding access to food options on campus.
At the center of these changes is the transformation of Scoreboard Market, which will now offer Grubhub ordering and locker pickup — similar to the successful system already in place at Bell Tower. This update allows students to skip the line by placing mobile orders and picking up meals from secure, selfserve lockers using meal swipes, Dining Dollars, or credit cards.
This marks a significant expansion of North Quad’s dining experience, bringing the campus’s pickup locker system closer to more students. With Scoreboard Market now serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., students will have extended access to meals throughout the day.
Whether you’re grabbing a breakfast sandwich on your way to class, a salad for lunch, or a warm dinner after a long study session, Scoreboard’s updated hours and new ordering system aim to make dining on North Quad easier and faster than ever.
CONTINUED ENHANCEMENTS COMING TO MIAMI’S ALLERGEN-CONSCIOUS DINING PROGRAM
Garden Dining Commons is welcoming a new neighbor in dining: Patio Grill, a unique innovation in campus dining. This stand-alone restaurant will feature its own ventilation system to prevent airborne allergens, along with a dedicated kitchen and dishroom to avoid crosscontamination.
The made-to-order menu will focus on fresh, minimally processed meals, prepared in a facility designed for allergen safety. Guests can enjoy meals on the go using their meal plan — order ahead for pickup through campus food lockers using the Grubhub app with Dining Dollars or a meal swipe.
Patio Grill will be one of the few college dining stations in the nation to offer a menu entirely free from the top nine allergens and gluten. The facility is being designed to meet the kitchen standards for Certified Free From™ by MenuTrinfo®, a third-party audit program that verifies rigorous allergen and gluten control measures.
Creating a safe and welcoming dining experience for students with food allergies is a continued priority, and Patio Grill reflects our commitment to making Miami’s dining program more inclusive and accessible. As Julie Vasilak, Senior Registered Dietitian for Dining Services, put it: “Here at Miami University we are taking a groundbreaking step forward in inclusive dining! We are making safe, allergen-free dining super convenient for students, with easy grab-andgo options and mobile ordering. Eating well on campus just got a whole lot easier!”
PAYROLL DEDUCTION CHANGE AUGUST 1, 2025
CHICK-FIL-A COMING SOON TO MIAMI’S CAMPUS
Miami University is excited to announce that Chick-fil-A will be opening in the Armstrong Student Center (ASC) this fall.
This addition comes in response to extensive student feedback collected over the past three years. Surveys consistently showed strong demand for a national brand dining option — and Chick-fil-A was the overwhelming favorite among students. In partnership with the Associated Student Government, Miami University proudly supports this new addition to campus dining.
The Chick-fil-A location will be housed in the ASC food court, replacing the Delicious Without at Haines concept. To enhance the dining experience, additional seating — including new tables and chairs — will be added to accommodate the growing number of students who gather in the ASC.
As a result of Workday implementation and system modernization, payroll deduction will no longer be supported beginning August 1, 2025.
As a Miami employee, you will continue to be offered and can enjoy an $8.99 meal rate at any of the three buffet-style dining commons locations.
It’s a great way to grab a convenient, all-you-care-to-eat meal on campus. View current hours at dineoncampus.com/MiamiUniversity/hoursof-operation
You'll also receive 10% off at most campus retail dining locations. Exclusions apply: Starbucks, Panera, and the soon-to-open Chick-fil-A are not included.
For these discounts simply present your ID along with a credit or debit card at the register.
For more information on parking passes, information on payment plans for tuition and fees and recreation services please refer to One Stop.

Dining Services is excited to welcome Athenian Grill to Bell Tower this fall, bringing bold, authentic Greek and Mediterranean flavors back to campus!
Athenian Grill was founded by Ilias Pappas, a Greek native who grew up near Athens, inspired by his family’s traditional cooking. What started as a pop-up in 2011 quickly evolved into several popular restaurants across Lexington, KY, thanks to his passion for great food and hospitality.
Several dining services team members recently had the opportunity to experience a tasting of the new Bell Tower menu with Ilias, who shared the story behind the brand and his vision for campus dining. From crisp falafel to fresh tzatziki, his commitment to flavor, authenticity, and quality was clear in every bite.
Based on student feedback, there’s been a strong desire for gyros and more Mediterranean options on campus. We’re thrilled to bring this vibrant concept to life and look forward to sharing it with you this fall.

FALL MOVE-IN: A CAMPUSWIDE EFFORT
Move-in for the 2025-26 academic year will take place Thursday, Aug. 21, and Friday, Aug. 22 for our new first year students. More than 4,000 students are expected to arrive across both days, contributing to a campus housing population of more than 8,000 this fall.
This campuswide effort involves about 200 staff from the Physical Facilities Department (PFD) and up to 100 student volunteers at peak times. Volunteer numbers can fluctuate based on the weather.
PFD works hard to keep traffic flowing so students can unload, park, and settle in. Crews install miles of posts and rope to guide vehicles and protect sidewalks and turf.
Thank you to the staff, volunteers, and campus partners who help make move-in a welcoming experience for our newest RedHawks and their families.

Stephanie Dailey, a 2016 kinesiology graduate from Miami University, worked with Conference and Event Services to host the 2025 Find Your Way™ – Accelerate Retreat this past June. Dailey, the Young Adult Coordinator for the Down Syndrome Association of Greater Cincinnati, was excited to bring her group to her alma mater once again.
The Find Your Way™ – Accelerate Retreat , held June 27-29, is part of a broader program focused on independent living skills for adults with Down syndrome. The retreat offers participants hands-on experiences to practice and strengthen life skills in a supportive, immersive environment. Miami was proud to help provide space for this impactful weekend.
FORMER MARTIN DINING COMMONS TO BECOME NEW NORTH QUAD REC CENTER SATELLITE LOCATION
Even more exciting news for North Quad residents — the former Martin Dining Commons is being reimagined as an expanded satellite location of the Rec Center, set to open by Aug. 25, 2025.
According to Mike Arnos, senior director of programs and academic partnerships, the redesigned space will include three primary fitness areas:
• A main fitness room equipped with strength machines, free weights, and treadmills
• A 1,000-square-foot functional training zone featuring sleds, kettlebells, plyo boxes, and medicine balls
• A dedicated hardwood-floor dance and group fitness studio
In addition, the lower level will remain a flexible, multiuse space available for student groups and rental events.
This new Rec Center extension brings fitness and wellness opportunities directly to the heart of North Quad — making it easier for students to stay active without having to cross campus.
The Martin Hall updates are part of Miami’s ongoing commitment to enhancing student life by creating more accessible, modern spaces where students can eat well, stay active, and thrive.

Sherrill Haas
Love and Honor in Action
Sherrill Haas was leaving the PFD parking lot when she noticed a student waiving his hands in the air trying to catch the BCRTA bus, but the bus drove on by. So she stopped to ask if he would like her to drop him off at the very next bus stop so he could catch a ride to which he accepted. As she drove to the next stop, she finds he was going across campus to the same area where she was headed, so she asked if he'd like her to just take him to his destination. He was very appreciative and accepted her invitation stating that his car was in the shop. Turns out he was a freshman and still didn't have the bus route and timing down yet.
Kudos to Sherrill for demonstrating Miami University's Love and Honor and turning one student's frustrating experience to that of friendliness and support.
