STAFF SUSTAINABILITY TRAINING MODULE: HIGHLIGHTS, AND THANK YOU

Thank you to all who participated in the Workday Learn Staff Sustainability Training Module, Overview of Sustainability and Climate Action at Miami University.

“We passed our goal of a 75% participation rate for all Oxford-based, non-academic staff for the new short course launched in January,” said Olivia Herron, director of sustainability.

Climate action and sustainability are a priority of Miami University President Gregory Crawford. The 10-minute course includes an eight-minute video that takes you behind the scenes of Miami’s geothermal plant, energy systems transformations, recycling efforts, Natural Areas, and much more. Results from the short survey at the end will help us to better communicate Miami’s sustainability successes.

Highlights from the survey include: How important is it to you that Miami University has committed to carbon neutrality by 2040?

• 62% of respondents that it is very important (28%) or important (34%); only 7% rated it as not important

Top four actions staff take to be more sustainable in their workplace/office:

• Place recyclables in the provided recycle bins (91%)

• Turn off lights when leaving the office (89%)

• ‘Power down’ during breaks (70%)

• Avoid printing when possible (70%)

After receiving a Peak Electrical Utility Alert email from Miami’s office of Energy Systems, staff:

• Turned off lights (76%)

• Unplugged electronics (52%)

• Closed blinds (41%)

• Adjusted temperature in their office (19%)

• Took none of these actions (18%)

The Overview of Sustainability and Climate Action at Miami University video was a collaboration by University Communications and Marketing and the Physical Facilities Department.

Jeff Shaver, Human Resources senior organization development consultant and a member of the Climate Action and Sustainability Council Faculty and Staff Engagement Working Group, led the effort to build the survey and course in Workday Learn.

“This is the first instance of embedding a survey directly into the Workday Learning platform. By doing so, we’re not only enhancing the learning experience but also empowering staff to engage more effectively in sustainability efforts,” Shaver said.

All new staff members on the Oxford campus will have the opportunity to take the 10-minute course, which is Job Enrichment Credit eligible for 0.25 points.

Thanks again to everyone who has taken the course! If you have not taken it and would like to, register for it on Workday Learn: Overview of Sustainability and Climate Action at Miami University

More than half your waste can be recycled, according to Miami University's waste hauling provider Rumpke Waste and Recycling. Rumpke services Miami’s Oxford and Regionals campuses, the city of Oxford, and much of Ohio and the tri-state area. Students and new Miami community members from other regions of the country may not be familiar with the items accepted for recycling in the area.

Review how to recycle and other ways to reduce your waste with our five tips.

1 2 3 4 5

Single Stream Recycling

On campus, blue recycling bins are placed next to grey waste bins in most buildings. All recyclables can go in one bin for collection. Not sure what Rumpke accepts for recycling? Check the list on the Sustainability at Miami website

• Download and print a flyer for your office.

Recycle Batteries

Place your residential-type batteries in a collection bin in your building or a building near you. The battery recycling service is supported by Miami’s Physical Facilities Department (PFD). Student interns for the Office of Sustainability in PFD collect and sort the batteries, which are then picked up about twice a year for recycling by Cleanlites Recycling facility in Cincinnati. Nearly 4,000 pounds of residential-type batteries were collected for recycling from offices on Miami’s Oxford campus in the 2023–2024 academic year.

• Read more in Miami News: Battery Recycling Q-and-A

Plastic Bags—Not in the Bin

Plastic bags are not recyclable by Rumpke. Do not place plastic bags in the recycling bin. This is also one of the most common mistakes in curbside recycling, Rumpke reports, when recyclable items are placed inside a plastic bag and that bag is then put in the recycling bin. Keep the items loose, not bagged. Plastic bags can damage the sorting equipment and interrupt the recycling process at the recycling facility.

• Instead: 1. Take your bags back—many Kroger and Walmart locations in the area have bins near their entrances for plastic bag collection and recycling. 2. Or, collect them in a Hefty ReNew bag

• Exception: Clear bags for shredded paper. Shredded paper may be placed in clear plastic bags for recycling by Rumpke.

Hefty ReNew Bag (for Plastic Bags and More)

Rumpke customers can collect hard-to-recycle items—like foam take-out containers, plastic utensils, and yes, plastic grocery bags in orange Hefty ReNew bags. The Hefty ReNew bags are picked up by Rumpke with the regular recycling collection. Start a ReNew bag in your office and place it near your recycling bin. ReNew bags are available from multiple retailers including Kroger, Walmart, and Ace Hardware. This service, a collaboration between Rumpke and Hefty, was implemented in 2023 in the tri-state area. Greater Cincinnati recycled 15 ton s of these previously unacceptable items in the first year of the program.

• Hefty ReNew starter kit: Order a free Hefty ReNew starter kit. It comes with an orange bag and instructions on how the program works.

• Miami’s Office of Sustainability promotes the Hefty ReNew program to student organizations for reducing waste during their events.

Food Scrap Composting

On the Oxford campus, Armstrong Student Center hosts five waste sorting stations with compost, recycling, waste collection, assisted by an OSCAR Smart Waste system. In the 2023–2024 academic year, the first year this service was offered, about 10,000 pounds of back-of-the-house food waste from dining services was diverted from the landfill. Miami contracts with GoZERO services, a nonprofit food scraps courier service, for collection and transportation. Food scraps are transported to Class II permitted facilities in Ohio.

• If you live in Oxford, try the Food Scrap Composting program for residents: Drop off at the GoZERO bins in the parking lot of the Tri Recreation Center, 6025 Fairfield Road.

Why Recycle?

• As an industry, recycling in Ohio supports over 3,100 local businesses, employing more than 98,000 people, according to Rumpke.

• About 90% of Rumpke's recycling end product is sold by Rumpke to local businesses. Rumpke primarily works with manufacturers within a 250-mile radius of their facilities.

• Contamination—such as plastic bags—costs Rumpke at least $1.5 million per year between disposal costs and the lost time from equipment being down.

STAY SAFE: SEVERE WEATHER PREPAREDNESS AT MIAMI

As Ohio recently observed Severe Weather Awareness Week from March 16–22, now is a great time to review your personal safety plan. The Miami University Police Department (MUPD) reminds students, faculty, and staff that quick action is critical during severe weather events. Severe weather can strike at any time, but in southwestern Ohio, the most severe thunderstorms typically occur between April and July.

Take a moment to review the university’s emergency procedures, especially those related to severe weather. If a tornado or severe thunderstorm poses an immediate threat to any Miami campus, an emergency alert will be sent via RedHawk Alert, the university’s emergency notification system that automatically enrolls students, faculty, and staff. Be sure to keep your registered device turned on and nearby when severe weather is expected.

Additionally, be aware of Oxford’s emergency warning system, which is tested on the first Wednesday of each month at noon, unless severe weather is anticipated.

For more information on university safety and security, visit MiamiOH.edu/life-at-miami/university-safety

CELEBRATING NATIONAL DIETITIAN DAY: MIAMI’S DEDICATED DIETITIANS

Wednesday, March 12, 2025, marked National Dietitian Day, a time to celebrate the hard work and expertise of registered dietitians who play a vital role in promoting healthy eating and overall wellness. We’re proud to have three dedicated dietitians on campus who provide invaluable support to our students. Let’s take a moment to highlight the work of these exceptional professionals:

Julie Vasilak, M.A., RDN, LD – Senior Registered Dietitian

Julie Vasilak is the senior registered dietitian at Miami University, where she works to manage the nutrition needs of student-athletes and provides counseling and guidance to students across campus. Julie also plays a key role in overseeing allergy management in the residence dining commons.

Julie has been a registered dietitian since 2018 and brings over a decade of experience in health and wellness, with a particular focus on exercise science. When she’s not helping students with their nutritional needs, Julie enjoys cooking, baking, attending sporting events, and spending time outdoors. Her favorite moment of the day is sipping coffee on the porch.

Kathy Adams, Ph.D., M.S., M.P.H., RDN, LD – Campus Dietitian

Kathy Adams serves as a campus dietitian at Miami University, providing nutrition counseling and allergy management within Miami’s residential and retail dining spaces. Kathy’s expertise in both public health and nutritional sciences makes her a go-to resource for students seeking advice on how to manage their nutrition for a healthy lifestyle.

Kathy is no stranger to Miami, having previously taught business as a professor for seven years. Outside of her professional role, Kathy enjoys spending time with her three children, traveling, and reading. Her favorite place to travel is Montana, which she calls her second home.

Boston Osborne, RDN, LD – Campus Dietitian

Boston Osborne joined Miami University as a campus dietitian, where she empowers students to make informed food choices while promoting balanced eating habits. She collaborates with the culinary team on allergen management and offers personalized nutrition counseling.

A registered dietitian since 2019, Boston specializes in medical nutrition therapy and counseling. When she’s not helping students make healthy food choices, she enjoys exploring new restaurants, reading, and taking walks with her dog, Mango.

We’re grateful for the work that Julie, Kathy, and Boston do every day to support the health and wellness of our Miami community. Thank you for all that you do!

Over spring break, Dining Services turned Miami’s campus into a playground for friendly competition with a two-day scavenger hunt. The event brought together 72 dining team members from across campus, forming 18 teams to test their Miami knowledge and teamwork skills.

On March 24, teams raced to solve clues leading to iconic campus locations—from historic buildings to popular student spots. One clue sent participants searching for a professor’s legacy in a historic home, while another led them to the smooth ice where RedHawks glide. The winning team from each dining location advanced to round two on March 25, where five teams competed for the top spot.

In the end, Maplestreet Dining Commons claimed victory, followed by Retail/Markets, Martin Dining Commons, Garden Dining Commons, and Western Dining Commons. The scavenger hunt was not only a fun and engaging team-building activity but also a creative way for staff to reconnect with campus in a new way.

Congratulations to all who participated!

MAKOS MAKE WAVES: ROSS HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMERS SHINE AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Ross High School Makos swim team has made a major splash this season, proving that hard work and dedication pay off in the biggest way possible. With a team of 31 strong, the Makos sent eight elite swimmers to the Ohio Division 2 State Championships—and they didn’t just show up; they dominated.

The highlight and proudest moments for Makos swimmers was Ross High School’s powerhouse trio: Cooper Burt, Connor Bennett, and Timmy Pfriffman. These three raced their way to a second place overall finish at the state championship, making their school and community proud.

They didn’t stop there. Makos athletes claimed a total of six event titles at the meet, cementing their names in the record books. Cooper Burt flew through the water, winning the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke, but he didn’t just win. He shattered the existing state record in the backstroke, proving he’s a force to be reckoned with. Connor Bennett showed his versatility, conquering both the 200-yard Individual Medley (IM) and the 100-yard breaststroke. Then, as if individual dominance wasn’t enough, Cooper and Connor teamed up with their fellow Makos to take gold in both the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay.

These swimmers weren’t just racing against their competitors, they were racing against history, and they set a new standard for Ross High School swimming and the Makos organization.

The momentum didn’t end at states. Fresh off their success, eight Makos boys took on an even greater challenge at the USA Swimming Sectionals in Indianapolis shortly after the States success. This meet was packed with elite swimmers from across the East Central region, including teams from New Jersey, North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

Despite facing some of the toughest competition in the nation, Makos didn’t back down. Instead, they placed ninth out of 112 teams, proving that their talent extends far beyond Ohio. With this performance, the Makos showed they belong on the national stage and are ready to keep pushing the limits.

With such a stellar season behind them, the Makos are already looking ahead to what’s next. The state medals and records are just the beginning. This team has its eyes set on even bigger meets, tougher competition, and faster times.

Makos athletes aren’t just participating; they’re making history, breaking records, and showing the world what they’re capable of. With talent, teamwork, and an unstoppable drive, there’s no telling how far they’ll go next season.

Congratulations to these incredible athletes on an unforgettable season!

WORKDAY IS ALMOST A YEAR OLD!

Our Workday go-live date of July 1, 2024, is nearly fully removed from our rearview mirror. As we move forward, we continue to grow more familiar with the system’s terminology, tasks, and navigation shortcuts.

Since starting this journey, we’ve developed many valuable resources to support your success. These include:

• Google Chat Group: Workday at Miami offers real-time collaboration with peers and central administration staff.

• Workday Wednesday Zoom Drop-In Sessions: Join us weekly from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. to ask questions and receive assistance. Click here for the meeting link

• Support Tickets: Submit requests for help using the shortcut MiamiOH.edu/workdaysupport.

• Workday Information Canvas Site: This site, which hosts original Workday training materials, will be revamped this year to improve content organization. Updates will also reflect any process or procedure changes from the past 10 months.

Access to these resources requires authentication through Miami’s network via single sign-on (SSO), ensuring compliance with Miami’s responsible use of computing resources policy.

Ongoing Training and Support

The central administrative personnel teams have conducted numerous training sessions and will continue to do so as new features and functionality are introduced. Additionally, many individual office training sessions and department meetings have been held and will continue indefinitely, thanks to the ongoing efforts of university divisional budget managers and departmental leaders who provide guidance and support.

System Upgrades and New Features

Since our go-live date, Workday has introduced new features

and enhanced functionality through two system-wide upgrades, keeping us at the forefront of innovation. Information about these features can be found in the Workday User Guides by selecting the Documentation link under your profile icon.

The WorkdayInfo website is also updated regularly with important information about the Workday Student project. While the site does not include Workday-specific screenshots, it provides the overall status of the project and timeline updates. A new Workday Info Miami blog site will be introduced later this fiscal year, offering targeted updates on specific topics of interest—stay tuned for that announcement!

Additional Learning and Resources

Explore the latest Workday Learning resources by using the global search prefix shortcut “LRN:” or by visiting the Learning app in your left-side Workday menu. You can also try out the Workday Assistant (the chat bubble in the upper right of the global navigation bar next to the notifications icon). Workday’s product team is actively enhancing the Assistant’s capabilities, which will continue to improve with upcoming upgrades.

Workday Mobile is another great resource for on-the-go access. The Mobile Assistant now accepts voice input in addition to text/ typing, making it even more convenient to stay connected.

Join the Workday Community

If you’re interested in learning more about the Workday Community—a global resource for Workday customers— submit a request to be invited to a training session. The Workday Community offers numerous helpful resources covering Workday’s products and services.

Forever forward!
