01 ARRANGED SUBTRACTION
NEWORLEANSHOSTEL
PROJECTTYPE: ACADEMIC&INDIVIDUAL
STUDIO: COMPREHENSIVE
YEAR: YEAR3SEMESTER2
LOCATION:
NEWORLEANS,LOUISIANA
PROFESSOR: EMILIETAYLORWELTY
Objective: Tasked to create a hostel in New Orleans, LA. The building should be fully code compliant, utilizing both city and national code. Complete with the project is a full MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, & Plumbing) drawing set and structural calculations.
Function: This hostel aims to serve the New Orleans population both in a public and private manner. The hostel features 140 beds across the top 3 levels, with the bottom level serving as retail, a bar, and amenities for the guests. The second floor in accessed via a public stair way, located off of Canal Street, and allows the public to enjoy the elevated courtyard and social space. This lifts the street life of New Orleans and replaces it on the second floor, spreading it up throughout the whole building.

Room Design & Configuration

Units within the hostel are comprised of 2, 4, and 6 bed configurations each with on-suite bathrooms and built in desks and wardrobes.
The simplistic design allows each room to be reconfigured to suit the hostel or guests needs and features a large, 3-pane window for views and natural light exposure.

02 PARKSIDE RESIDENCE
NEWORLEANSCO-HOUSING
PROJECTTYPE: ACADEMIC&INDIVIDUAL
STUDIO: HOUSING
YEAR:
LOCATION:
YEAR2SEMESTER2
NEWORLEANS,LOUISIANA
PROFESSOR: SERGIOALVAREZ
Objective: Combining knowledge from the previous three projects of domestic spaces throughout the semester, this project aims to redevelop an urban block from 18 individual houses into one cohousing construction.
Function: With 6 variations of homes, the interlocking of different groups of people allows for a more cohesive and functional cohousing system. With a centered focus around active families, Parkside Residences combines numerous variations of homes to accommodate both the families existing on the site, as well as welcoming new families to the area. Featuring a continuous, snaking volume on the Western side of the site, the East side is dedicated toward a central park for the community that bleeds over and under. This is a completely public and open area, whereas the stepping-back terraces within the project provide select homes with a more privatized outdoor experience. The park features a playground for young children as well as a sunken, started amphitheater. As the project snakes around the existing projects, Frankie and Johnny’s was relocated to a more suitable spot for both the restaurant as well as the community. Now located on the corner of Tchoupitoulas and Joseph Street, there is more foot traffic as well as an increase in area for the establishment.
Apart from being anchored on either end, the cohousing units are elevated allowing the park and grass-filled area to be continuous along the entirety of the site.
The second floor units, accessed by the vertical circulation cores, vary from unit to unit. Shown above are 4 variations as well as the gym space on the left hand corner.

03 CABIN IN THE WOODS
PROJECTTYPE: PERSONAL&INDIVIDUAL
STUDIO: NOTAPPLICABLE
YEAR: SUMMER2024
LOCATION: COLORADO
PROFESSOR: NOTAPPLICABLE
Objective: Create and design a personal project reflecting 3 years of core studio, specifically drawing of domestic space projects from second year (Horizontal, Vertical, and Sectional Home). Completed in one weekend.
Function: This cabin utilizes massive windows boarding three sides to flood the interior with natural light. The second floor is lofted above the first and contains the only bedroom, as well as a full bath. The first floor is an open concept with the living space and kitchen/dinning space dominating the square footage. The step roof and exterior facade are snow resistant, intended to guide it off onto the ground.

BRIDGING THE GAPS
LOSANGELESWAREHOUSEDISTRICTURBANPLAN
PROJECTTYPE: ACADEMIC&PARTNER
STUDIO: URBANPLANNING
YEAR:
YEAR3SEMESTER1
LOCATION: LOSANGELES,CALIFORNIA
PROFESSOR: ANGELAMORTON
Objective: Given a 93 acre industrial site, West of Downtown Los Angeles, partners were tasked with creating a redevelopment strategy for the site. This strategy would be implemented onto the site, but the ideas should continue beyond the sites boundaries, influencing adjacent areas.
Function: In partnership with Alexa Trapani, there is a focus on revitalizing the ecology within the region, the urban plan set to add parks and public green spaces throughout. Utilizing a simple kit of parts, buildings were shaped around a newly design road system with a 3 system hierarchy, giving pedestrians the majority of access and limiting cars. Working from the urban fabric of downtown, the newly added structures slope in height as they approach the river and Boyle Heights neighborhood.

left - A newly designed street suited for cars, bikers, and pedestrians. Curbs were implemented between surfaces protecting walkers.
right - A pedestrian only street replacing the old “car first” mode of transport. These are strategically placed, connecting residential to commercial and business.

URBANPLANNINGCATALYST
PROJECTTYPE: ACADEMIC&INDIVIDUAL
STUDIO:
YEAR:
URBANPLANNING
YEAR3SEMESTER1
LOCATION: LOSANGELES,CALIFORNIA
PROFESSOR:
ANGELAMORTON
Objective: Moving from a partner project, to now individual, and building of the Urban Plan, students should design a Catalyst building that aims to start a chain reaction, employing the urban planning strategy.
Function: The catalyst is divided into two sides, with a more private centric and more public centric side. These are then joined by multipurpose rooms hidden underneath the green space that envelopes the entire structure. The goal was to make the structure itself the new green space and erect itself into place. Trees are placed throughout to tie back to surrounding parks and the facade is constructed of metal ribbon, weaving and changing density to cast shadows mimicking that of native trees.

06 PARAMETRIC DESIGN
PHYSICALANDDIGITALPARAMETRICSYSTEMS
PROJECTTYPE: ACADEMIC&INDIVIDUAL
STUDIO: ADVANCEDDIGITALMEDIA
YEAR:
YEAR3SEMESTER1
LOCATION: NOTAPPLICABLE
PROFESSOR: ADAMMARCUS
Objective: Utilizing Grasshopper, students created a parametric system with variable change, producing both a physical/digital model, as well as line-working drawings, following a variable and recursive line of components.
Function: I created a parametric system with variable change from the top left down to the bottom left. It is a system of notching pieces that scale in size, changing the repeatable system in small increments. This system was then translated into a digital and physical model. The primary focus was to see how the software could aid in the iterations and approach to variational design and yield a legible product. The physical model measures 17” x 17” and was created out of chipboard. It contains 168 individual pieces that fix together without glue or tape. The script was also utilized to produce line-work drawings either following a variable or recursive line of components.
