President’s address

Head over heart

One fine Sunday morning, I got up to a storm of messages on one WhatsApp group that I am a part of. There was a disagreement between few members leading to 100+ back and forth rapid messages exchanged. Whew! Although the discussion remained civil, as I read through, I sensed a lot of strong emotions. I could also guess from the language and the articulation (or the lack of) that the messages were being just typed as the thoughts occurred in the minds of the senders. Sometimes it seems like reactions masquerading behind big words as thoughts. Have you been part of such conversations? On WhatsApp? On Facebook? On Twitter? I have been there. Sometimes as a silent observer, sometimes at the receiving end of someone's misgivings, and if I can be honest, few times (only, thankfully) also the culprit of holding everyone else hostage to my outpourings. I have learned the hard way the value of biting your tongue (not literally!) before speaking. I also try to extend it to written communication - including on WhatsApp. And now that I think about it Toastmasters had a big role to play in shaping me this way.

While everyone says 'Follow your heart', I have learned we need to follow our heart on special occasions, but not in every matter. The head is a better pilot for most part of our flight of life. !

I remember during my early days as a newbie Toastmaster, I used to feel the urge to comment while a speaker said something, but suppressed that urge since no one else speaks while the speaker is delivering. Eventually that urge gave way to careful listening, often without letting my own thoughts on the topic coming in the way. Even when I could comment on the speech as an evaluator, the process of turning over various points in my mind before deciding what to speak helped me cast aside first reactions and replace them with analytical points. Plus, the fact that evaluations need to be motivating saved me from tipping over the cliffs of criticism, sarcasm, negativity and much more. Slowly and quietly, I never realised when I got the slight edge of 'thinking' before acting. While everyone says 'Follow your heart', I have learned we need to follow our heart on special occasions, but not in every matter. The head is a better pilot for most part of our flight of life. Alas, life is not perfect. Occasionally, I regress to the old Nikhil, only to regret it. But it happens less and less now. Do YOU have that edge of 'thinking' before acting and reacting? If not, it is never too late to begin. Thinking before acting, speaking, writing or doing pretty much everything is not out of fashion, even today. The world around us entices us with triggers all the time. Remaining silent in room full of talkers can make you feel like the odd one out. But the choice to participate on our own terms is up to us. Let’s resolve to use the Toastmasters program to explore new facets of learning and 'earn' these little edges of advantage. Who knows, one day, you may be writing this article.

The not so popular –

Indian Rock Art Art forms an indispensable part of nation’s pride & India has got enormous reasons to be proud of its art history. Ancient India has immensely contributed in the field of art however its contribution shave largely remained anonymous. One such UNESCO world heritage site that lies hidden in the central India are caves of Bhimbetka with its beautiful rock paintings in Madhya Pradesh. This natural art gallery is located nearly 46 km south of capital city Bhopal. These caves are art treasures which records gradual progress and adaptations of man in prehistoric era. One of the earliest discovery of prehistoric rock art in the world was made in India. The discovery of these caves is quite an interesting story, Father of Indian Rock Art & archaeologist Dr. VS Wakankar, when travelling along the hills by train noticed the spectacular sandstone rock formations. He got fascinated and got down from the train to explore and thus in 1957 he discovered Bhimbetka! Paintings found here are made of 3 different techniques - mixing the color with a lot of water which is called as a transparent technique; mixing the pigment with water called as opaque technique; applying the pigment directly on the wall called as crayon technique.

Despite their importance, the Bhimbetka rock art sites did not attract much scientific attention and “The Archaeological Survey” of India was instrumental in having Bhimbetka put on the world heritage list. Rock art in any topography is of vital importance in the study of geology, civilisation, human evolution, cultural diffusions, religious beliefs, etc. However, these rock arts have been deteriorating due to both human and natural factors and there are many scientific efforts carried out by the archaeologist to preserve it. One of the most powerful and effective tools of promotion of rock art in India is through proper education & awareness. All art & history lovers, if you happen to visit the heart of India - Madhya Pradesh then Bhimbetka is something not to be missed, you never know, may be this visit could become an inspiration for your next speech!!
