We think we learn from teachers, and we sometimes do. But the teachers are not always to be found in school or in great laboratories. Sometimes what we learn depends upon our own powers of insight

My first time

TM Hasnain Chinagi– District 98.

It was with a great deal of trepidation that I walked into class 4C of one of the most prestigious colleges in south Mumbai. I had no idea what my reception would be like. From all that I had heard, I knew that if I didn’t pass muster, I would be roasted alive. But I am jumping the gun here. One lazy Sunday afternoon while I was musing of this and that and generally having a pretty favorable outlook on life, I was awakened by a beep on my phone. It was one more chat on our favorite messenger app. It was a link to a talk given by a toastmaster, so I followed it and
listened intently. Within the first minute I was hooked. He said it was time we got out of our

comfort zone and did the things that we always wanted to do but never had the courage for. Now this was not something that I had never heard before, but the way he said it, made a deep impression on me. When was the last time I had done something for the first time? I could not remember. I am at that stage of my life when I am losing a lot of people I have grown up with. People I went to school with, or worked with or relatives my age. And this has made me aware of my own mortality. I could probably be kicking the bucket next.

Good time to look at my own bucket list. What with trying to make a decent living and prioritizing everything else, I really had not bothered to check when my own dreams fell by the wayside. What happened to the full marathon that I wanted to run? What happened to the book that could not be written because I had buried it under a mountain of “cants”? Speaking of mountains, what happened to the dream of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro? What happened to my dream of teaching? So I decided to accept a long standing invitation to teach Business Laws at this college, twice a week for one semester. But just before stepping in the class, I couldn’t help telling myself “what have you got yourself into silly old man?” I was about to address a group of 18-20 year olds with all sorts of hormones raging about in their bodies. All arms and legs, they just could not sit still. How was I to get them to listen to me for 100 minutes on a subject that they perceived as dry and drab? How could I, a 58 year young man with daughters older than them, establish a connection? The answer was ….Toastmasters. Four and a half years in Toastmasters had taught me how to mask my nervousness and to use humor to win over the audience. Within minutes, I could sense an easing up and I knew that I had established a rapport. I used outline techniques like, “Past present future, Tellx3 and Problem Cause solution” to give coherent and well organized answers to their queries. The lectures became highly interactive as we had debates, moot courts and discussions on controversial topics. Gradually, the “dry and drab” class of law became something the students attended because they enjoyed it, not because they had to. The icing on the cake was when the head of the department requested me to teach the other classes as well.

Toastmasters open many doors. It opens our eyes to opportunities we never believed existed. It gives us confidence in our own capabilities. It breaks down our limiting beliefs and the walls that we allow others to build around us. And then, magic happens. When was the last time you did something for the first time?
