At times, looking back at what you have lived and learned or rather earned from your life is the only thing that gives satisfaction to us. For ultimately, they say that life is a race and it is important to keep yourself intact and running to win the race. The moment you stop, the moment your feet give up, you will be lost in the crowd of unknown forever. In this newsletter, we have shared the stories from Senior District 98 Toasties. We believe this newsletter pleases your appetite for crisp and wonderful reading.

The perspective

TM Raunak Kulwal– Area Director of Area M2, District 98. ! !

“Introspection is the beginning of all wisdom.” – Anonymous

Even today when I introspect on my Toastmasters journey, I am mesmerized at the way things unfolded. Two years ago, I found the way to a meeting room full of enthusiastic and friendly people who called themselves ‘Toastmasters’. What they were doing was something I had never seen before; amazed and inspired, I joined them to break the routine of my mundane life. Initially, I thought I would be part of toastmasters Program, will go by hook and join some B- school for
MBA. ! But it’s been rightly quoted “What's meant to be will always find a way”. It’s now more than 2.5 years with Toastmasters International and the journey has been phenomenal with endless learnings. Along with the growth in communication and leadership skills in my Toastmasters journey, I also see the growth in my Perspective. ! According to Area Director Raunak, Vision, Intent
and Priorities are three factors, which transforms each Toastmaster into a Distinguished Toastmaster. !

Vision In order to achieve any positive thing in life we must have a positive vision. While joining Toastmasters we have multiple aspirations in the mind and a burning desire in the heart to achieve them all. But we fail and fall short of the commitment and enthusiasm. As a result, our Journey and growth suffer. A clear vision helps to focus on the right things and to perform positive actions which later lead to accomplishments and accolades.

Intent The Intent should be always to serve the Club with full dedication and devotion. We can learn and grow to infinity if we serve selflessly. One doesn’t need to be part of the executive committee in order to serve the Club. In fact, by attending meetings regularly and performing the roles religiously is the best way to serve the Club. The noble intent of serving not only helps to grow individually but also brings laurels to the Club and organization.

Priorities We can do anything, but we can’t do everything, at least not at the same time. Always assess your priorities; not only on the basis of your goals and ambitions, but also on the basis of your potential and availability. One should know the art of maintaining a balance between desires and goals. Setting up the right priorities helps us to work efficiently and to prosper in every field of life. I believe that it’s the journey that teaches us more than the destination and there are no short cuts. In this long journey of Toastmasters one can constantly grow and transform into a great leader if one has a clear vision, noble intent and right Priorities. Now it’s up to us what we choose; to just go through the journey or to grow through the journey.

Golden R U L E: How to become an effective Leader, Communicator and skillful Learner?

DTM Brillian S. K – Immediate Past District Director (District 98). An avid public speaker, mentor and coach.

! “Two roads diverged in a wood and I - I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.” - Robert Frost

When was the last time you did something for the first time? A clichéd question, you may say, however if you think deeply it is more than a question. Many a times we do not embark on a journey as we are AFRAID – afraid that we may FAIL, afraid that this is not a norm, afraid that we do not know anything. If we go BEYOND your COMFORT zone we can maximize our learning. Based on my experiences, I have found The Golden R U L E for being effective as a leader, communicator and a skilful learner. What differentiates those who are successful from those who are not, is the ability to learn, unlearn and re-learn as required. Leadership is all about creating our own space, our identity, our presence. Remember you are not an APE, you are unique so being yourself and bettering your last performance is what is essential. Relearn Everything we learn never gets utilised. What is used stays; unused elements are relegated to the inner parts of our memory. Relearning is the easiest, just some guidance and we can be there! Leadership essentially involves listening, time management, organisation, delegation and providing feedback. We all know about these but seldom get to practice. Toastmasters’ philosophy of “Learn by doing” is the essence of the program - we re-learn. What we do continuously stays with us for a long time. Surveys indicate that we retain almost 75% of what we do.

Unlearn We cannot make mistakes - this is one belief that we need to unlearn. It is OK to make mistakes. If this was a school probably I would be standing outside the class punished for making this statement. The fact is that we all learn from our mistakes. However, no one wants to risk making mistakes for the fear of being ridiculed. Imagine walking on stage in front of hundreds of people for a contest– getting nervous and not being able to speak. Developing cold feet or stage fright is common and can be overcome. I have made a few mistakes, realised the need to adjust my sail and move forward in my Toastmasters journey. It is never too late to unlearn, if we are willing to take the first step, mentors are there to help. Learn If we have to enhance our leadership and communication, we need to continuously learn and develop skills. We all know leadership and communication are skills that can be developed and enhanced with practice. The more we do, the more we learn. The more we learn the better we become. The better we become, the journey becomes enjoyable. We learn not just by doing, but also by observing and providing feedback, where else could you find such a platform other than Toastmasters. Educate The best way to enhance our learning is to teach others. If we teach we retain 90% of what we share. The best way to enhance our learnings is to groom, coach and mentor new members. It looks difficult to be a mentor or a coach, but support and feedback is always available. Trust me every mentee would give you a different learning. Take this challenge and see the difference in you as a leader and learner. These are simple, easy to implement RULE that can help create a paradigm shift in your learning, leading and communication style. Dear friends, if you have still not utilised the benefits as a Toastmaster, this is the time to take that plunge, dive deep and become not just as leaders and communicators but as human beings. Remember if you are ever at a crossroad - taking the road less travelled would give you opportunities to explore and may be make your own road.

Goa, Goa, Goa Confluence Goa, Goa, Goa Confluence Where speakers are nice Food is full of spice Come to Goa, Come to Goa Goa Confluence! !

DTM Nikhil Salvi President of Crown Toastmasters Club !

When I heard this nice jingle from the organisers of Confluence 2016, replete with guitar and instrumental music set to a catchy tune, I immediately felt that this conference is going to be fun. The conference truly lived up to my expectations. Set right on the pristine Bogmallo beach, with incessant waves providing a constant buzz in your ears, and surrounded by the salty air, I could totally understand why one Toastmaster said this is wrong place to have a formal conference. But I didn’t feel so.
