Awards Finalists IAN MANSON ADULT LEARNER OF THE YEAR Beverly Joyce, Eskmills Project, Edinburgh Beverly is committed to personal development and has worked hard to attain the qualification commensurate with her role. She is an enthusiastic leader and uses her own learning and development to bring other staff along. Her own CPD plan has shown a significant insight into her abilities and the strength to drive her future learning. In the last year Beverly has taken on leadership roles in different areas within Eskmills and has successfully supported staff and service users to adapt to the changes that have been part of the project. She is a strong advocate for service users and has grown significantly since she joined Eskmills in 2012. She has taken part in many learning opportunities including SVQ2, SVQ3 and PDA in Medication, first aid training, Calms training, outcomes training and Module 1 Management - all of which she has used in her work, shared with colleagues and service users. Susan Myers, Addiction Worker, Rainbow House, Glasgow In the last year Susan has undertaken two Professional Development Awards, Trainers’ training and commenced training as an assessor candidate. She works hard at sharing her knowledge with service users and staff to enable them in their development. Through Susan undertaking and sharing the learning from PDA in Medication a considerable improvement has been seen in the service as a whole. The service has benefited significantly from this learning as it has been shared so successfully by Susan. New protocols are now in place for managing medication which is positive both for the service users whose medication is handled appropriately and also for the service in relation to Care Inspection reports. Her supervisory skills have also had a significant effect on the service and staff.

Awards Finalists IAN MANSON AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE The Bungalow Team, Stonehaven A plan of innovative fundraising was raised by the management team at a strategic planning day to support the service users to access an annual residential holiday. The fundraising began with small table top sales, an auction and a ceilidh. The service users were heavily involved in these events and a Care Inspectorate report in February commented on the excellent standards achieved by the service in meeting the needs of supported people with profound and multiple disabilities and resulted in a top grade of 6. The Bungalow held a ‘Strictly’ event which raised the profile of the organisation and secured positive outcomes for the service users. The community activities that came from these events promoted the Bungalow within the area and benefited the service users by developing creativity through music and dance. Morlich House, Edinburgh Although not a designated dementia home, the manager recognised that a high percentage of residents do have dementia and has drawn on evidence from Stirling University’s Dementia strategy group to enhance their comprehensive activity programme. They created a 1950s Reminiscence lounge and kitchen. Development has taken 2 years to ensure furniture and fittings were authentic. Outside the building a ‘street scene’ was created which continues to develop. The residents and visitors love the room which provides a quiet space for visits and is also used for reminiscence sessions where memories are revived and fun is had by all. The lounge was created in an unused part of the building and much pleasure is gained from this resource. The quality of care provided has resulted in Grade 5 across the Care Inspectorate ratings for some years. Jackie Walker, Bluebell Perinatal Counselling Service, Glasgow Jackie is one of only 6 people to hold a qualification for Perinatal Mental health (PMH) and as a manager is considered a leader in her field. She has made a significant contribution through development of learning with NES/NHS. Jackie has considerably benefitted the service by increasing the opportunities for training. Her involvement nationally has raised the profile of CrossReach Perinatal counselling services. Her contribution to perinatal counselling fits

Awards Awards Finalists Finalists neatly into the 5 goals of the CrossReach Strategic Plan, showing that it is a needs led service. There has also been innovation in terms of the delivery and training and service users’ needs have been met through raising awareness. The service provides service users with counselling which has positive outcomes for them, their children and families.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR Joan Finlay and Pauline Young, Bluebell PND Glasgow Joan and Pauline come as a pair and Bluebell PND have benefited greatly from their dedication and passion, caring for and supporting mums and babies through their baby massage group. Mums waiting for counselling gain from the sensitive environment Joan and Pauline provide. They support mums throughout the year and run small support groups for five weekly sessions. Mums have commented that they are so welcomed, like Joan and Pauline’s gentle style, they leave the class feeling calm and feel strong bonds are created with baby. Mums are encouraged to meet for coffee which helps with the isolation they often feel. Joan and Pauline have a calm and competent manner which helps to validate the experience and increase their confidence as a mother. Alistair McIntyre,Threshold Glasgow Alistair was supported by Threshold Glasgow for over 20 years but sadly died in an accident in October 2015. He was hugely enthusiastic and committed to CrossReach and Threshold Glasgow. He was part of the management committee and attended weekly meetings regularly. Always full of ideas, Alistair made suggestions on how to make things better for everyone. As someone who had epilepsy he took part in training for workers from his perspective. He was interested in everyone he met and had a friendly positive manner. He had strong values and made a point of including everyone. He got into the spirit of things and led many events for the LD Forum. CrossReach meant a lot to him and he promoted the organisation at guilds, trade fairs, colleges and universities.

Awards Finalists Margaret Winchcole,Threshold Glasgow Margaret is a customer of and volunteer for Threshold Glasgow. She is part of Threshold Glasgow’s management team and volunteers at weekly management meetings. She is a lay assessor for the Care Inspectorate and has carried out 10 inspections to date. She is involved in the community involvement committee which organised events to raise money for CrossReach’s LD National Forum. As part of the LD forum, she attends monthly meetings, writes reports and helps run events to raise money. In order to develop her role as a volunteer she attends regular trainings with the Scottish Consortium for Learning Disability. Margaret is part of a small team that goes to speak at colleges and universities throughout the year. This has a positive effect as she discusses how she receives care and how empowering that can be. She has a big impact on both customers and staff, positively encouraging others to become involved.

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR Amy Cloke, Project Worker, Daisy Chain Early Years Project, Glasgow Amy has made a real impact on the service she provides for the children and families. She has been at the forefront of introducing innovative methods of working to engage some of the most hard to reach Roma families in Glasgow. At the request of Glasgow City Council Amy represented CrossReach at an international Roma event in Spain last year where she was a fantastic ambassador. She was recently been picked to meet with the lead policy for Early Years in Scottish Government who recognised Amy’s heart for Christian Social Care and also CrossReach’s vital area of service delivery. Her professional caring approach raises the profile of CrossReach through foodbanks, education, Scottish Government, NHS health improvement, local churches and more. In the two years Amy has worked for CrossReach she has achieved positive relationships with the families which statutory services struggled with for a long time.

Awards Awards Finalists Finalists Kelly Ireland, Service Manager,The Elms Care Home, Edinburgh Kelly has risen through the staff ranks since joining CrossReach as a school leaver to recently being appointed Service Manager. She has developed her service, particularly an audit system for medication, meeting with the medication advisor for the Care Inspectorate who was so impressed by her work that he invited her to speak at their conference. Kelly takes the lead role in Customer Service Excellence for the Elms and the most recent eight ‘compliance plus’ awards means they have exceeded the standard required. In all that she does, Kelly promotes CrossReach as an organisation which provides quality of care to those whom we have the privilege to support. She has a positive attitude to her work and embraces challenge with that positive attitude which is infectious to all those around. George McNeilly, Head of Service (Counselling and Mental Health) George has had responsibility of managing counselling services for the last 8 years. He holds his work as one of his highest priorities making himself available when needed. George provides added value to his post by his very nature and the way he holds the core of the CrossReach values in high regard. He has a quiet and steady strength, is entirely consistent and dependable. He is a fair man, able to give encouragement and praise but also able to challenge and push for standards with measured support. His commitment to the service user is in no doubt and George holds the plain and clear values of respect and consideration of others regardless of their circumstances. George has empowered his managers to be the best that they are able to be and their service users benefit from this.
