HOUSE COMPLETE December 2009

Fresh flowers for a Merry Christmas Even though Daisies, mini carnations, hydrangea, roses, lilies are not obvious choices when one thinks about Christmas, do they look stunning on a flat plate, in a glass vase or in a wreath. A bit of oasis for water, asparagus for greenery, a candle and a few Christmas balls and you have the perfect centerpiece on your dinner table. Straw wreaths, also with some oasis attached, look wonderful with adorned when pine twigs, mini Christmas balls and fresh roses. If you like minimalistic, go for white and silver: elegant, stylish and modern. Baby’s breath, a few lilies, silver million star and a candle in the middle of your centerpiece will do the trick. A glass centerpiece with a stark white candle, surrounded by white roses, pine twigs and silver mini stars is super gorgeous. You will surely get oohs and aahs…

“Fast Rent House Aruba makes your dreams come true Realize your dreams and enjoy the feeling of living in your own private home during your holidays. Many years of experience in rental of property has made professional real estate management company Fast Rent House Aruba, the best choice when you wish to enjoy a careless vacation in the Caribbean.

Relaxing o n

The De Jong family from Rotterdam, the Netherlands, wrote after their holidays: "After a period of 8 years of staying in hotels during our vacation, we tried staying at a vacation residence. We have always loved staying at hotels, so this was a new experience for us. We surprised ourselves: we absolutely loved the feeling of independence at our vacation home, having the entire pool to ourselves and no more fighting for pool beds in the mornings.

Breakfast

Previously we had all-inclusive bookings at the hotels where we stayed, but our rental property provided us with an opportunity to try out many lovely restaurants we never visited before. We took nice trips to Arikok National Park, the North coast and to Baby Beach while our daughters were horseback riding. When we came home we could park the car in front of the house and jump into the pool for a nice swim. Especially the children enjoyed the pool a lot, but they also played soccer in the garden and every evening we played board games. In the mornings we could sleep in without One year later... housekeeping banging on our door. Breakfast was wonderful with our favorite brand of chocolate paste and peanut butter. And we have used the barbecue a lot. In the Netherlands you never know if the weather will be good enough for a barbecue, but on Aruba it is that kind of weather 365 days a year. Our holiday was terrific for the children as well as for us. Next year we shall even bring our grandparents here! We have really enjoyed our holiday from the beginning till the end. We hope to see you again next year. Thank you once again!!!!!" R. de Jong, Rotterdam

Experience the luxury of a vacation residence on Aruba The Smith family from New York, USA, wrote in their rental property’s guestbook: "Normally we don’t write much in guest books, but we wish to make an exception now because of the excellent vacation we have had. First of all we could not believe that Fast Rent House Aruba could provide such an affordable vacation. We paid less for an entire three-bedroom residence than we did for a three-bedroom suite. We booked our vacation with Rent House Aruba six months ago; the people from Rent House helped us find the perfect rental property for us. We got all the information we needed to book our rental and we received a map how to reach the house and where to rent a car. Our flight was late and we called from Miami to ask if they would purchase some essentials for us. When we arrived at the house, the fridge was filled with beverages and breakfast for the next morning. The person from Rent House welcomed us to the house and explained the workings of the most important appliances. The next morning that same person came to show us the rest of the house; he also provided us with a lot of information about the island, restaurants and things to do. During our holiday, Fast Rent House Aruba has always been there for us, no matter what. hey know what makes a holiday a great holiday and they do everything in their power to see to it that you enjoy your time on Aruba. We had a great time here and we are sure we will come back to this beautiful island and book our vacation rental at www.renthousearuba.com.

Thanks a lot, Rent House, and see you next year." A. Smith, New York, USA

Holiday time on the island… Aruba abounds with the spirit of the season! nce upon a time, an island visitor, when being told about Carnival on Aruba, commented, “Oh, I wondered how you people marked time here, as you don’t have Christmas or New Year’s…” No joke! A portion of the world strangely believes that if there is no snow and the temperature is about 70 degrees, Christmas is not part of the culture! Of course, those who h have vacationed on the island anytime after Nov vember are quite aware of the contrary; holiday ttime on Aruba is a vibrant time of traditional ffestivities and special events, with homes and m main avenues often beautifully decorated with C Christmas lights.

Annually, a group from San Nicolas receives sponsorship to construct the Seroe Preto City of Lights on the eastern end of the island. A popular place to visit in the evenings during the holiday season, one will find musical groups and snack booths there on the weekends. Among those musical groups will be any number of gaita performers, tradionally fronted by a large chorus of female singers. Originang in Venezuela, where the lively lyrics are oen a form of polical commentary or protest, the vocalists are backed by a driving beat which assuree

on one will never doze off listening to this holiday music! A Academics believe the name “gaita” comes from the go gothic word “gait,” which means goat, the skin stretched o over the tradional fricon drum called a “furro” in V Venezuela, but known as a “furuko” in Aruba. Congo d drums, bongos and the regional tambora are all part o of the percussion background, with a wiri player for ggood measure, which contributes to the unique sound o of these groups.

Though Santa may be seen at various Christmas events, it is Sinterklaas, the dignified old gent, and his Swarte Pieten (Black Peters) for whom island children lay out their shoe before bed me, in hopes of finding in it a small toy or treat in the morning. Sinterklaas arrives on Aruba from Spain with much fanfare, usually two weeks before his birthday, December 5, a er which he quietly slips home to return next year. Youngsters are in awe of his visit to their homes, and his crew can usually be seen walking the streets of Oranjestad on the days the town is turned into a huge pedestrian mall, which is every Saturday beginning with the first weekend in December. Watch out! Swarte Pieten have been known to grab naughty children, (or par cularly cute young ladies,) to stuff them in their sack and take them off to Spain! Aruba’s holiday season culminates with an explosive end of the year celebra on-literally! Tradi on demands that the night sky fills with pyrotechnics on New Year’s Eve, par cularly at midnight, when families and businesses light their pagaras, a huge roll of firecrackers, some mes numbering over ten million. Just as the old year ends and the new one arrives, the sound is thunderous and Aruba’s skies fill with smoke from the discharges of tens of thousands of pagaras. This epitomizes gree ng the New Year with a bang, and provides a memorable end to the holiday season. Islanders relax at home on New Year’s Day, o en visited by singing groups performing Dande, a musical form par cular to the ABC islands, where singers personalize the lyrics to each household, o en quite comically. Passing the hat is also part of the ritual, as in olden mes, this is how the Dande groups financed their efforts.

Aruba’s Christmas season is a wonderful time of celebration! Parties are organized around the island – from lavish corporate end-of-the-year parties, elegant garden weddings to smaller scale family get-togethers. Many of these social gatherings are held at one of our excellent local café’s, restaurants or resorts, but did you ever think about organizing such a festive party in the privacy of your own backyard?

First of all, it is important to locate your outdoor dining area on a spot that is protected from the natural elements: the sun, rain and wind. You can create your dining area close to the house, on a veranda (roofed porch), or by building a structure like a pergola or gazebo on a nice spot in your backyard. It is also essential to create an atmosphere that is comfortable and cozy for your guests. This can be done by enclosing part of the dining area with a wooden screen or some nice-looking tropical plants. For the flooring you could opt for unique rustic-looking pavers or terracotta tiles. When shopping for new outdoor dining furniture, you can choose out of a vast selection of different styles and materials. For a more casual, elegant look for your dining area, try opting for the more classic styles and materials, such as teakwood or wrought iron. For extra comfort and a festive touch, order seating pads for your dining chairs in bright colors that will help you create a wonderful festive atmosphere.

15 If your outdoor dining room is built on a spot apart from the house, make sure that you place enough lights along the path that leads to your dining area, so your guests will arrive safely at your private party spot. Make sure to test your new outdoor dining area a few times with some family members or close friends to avoid future inconveniences, so when it is time for your Christmas dinner party under Aruba’s stars, it will be a night everybody will remember‌

To create the right mood for your dinner party, you need the right kind of lights. Avoid those that are too bright, like fluorescent lights; instead opt for a combination of white Christmas lights, Chinese lanterns, candle lanterns, oil lanterns and Tiki torches. They will help you create a setting for your guests that is both relaxed and inviting, cozy and joyful. Cover your dinner table with a white, crisp linen table cloth and decorate it with festive dinnerware, candles enclosed in large glass vases and fresh tropical flowers. To keep the mosquitoes away, place some mild-scented citronella candles around the area that you are planning to entertain your guests.

16

During the end of the year, when we tend to take more time to entertain and get-together with our family and friends, it is important to create one or more areas either inside or outside the house that can easily be converted into a cozy entertaining spot. So why not dress up your garden, make it ready for this Christmas season.

¨a nice fireplace in your garden could be the special touch for this season¨

Your outdoor furniture does not have to be boring or uncomfortable; on the island you will find many stores where you will find elegant outdoor furniture made of durable materials, like teak, cast-aluminum and wrought-iron, perfect for outdoor entertaining. Make sure to purchase or order high-quality seating for your chairs, done in bold colors, to make it extra comfortable for your guests.

Nowadays garden containers come in just about any style and material you can think of (like zinc, stainless steel, bamboo, wicker, colored ceramics, etc), so your options are just endless. To create a great focal point in your garden, try grouping a nice selection of different-sized garden containers - done in monochromatic shades - and plant some beautiful palms or other tropical plants for a great effect.

Something new this year are “lighted glass flowers”. They come in a nice selection of shapes and colors and they run on solar energy. For a cozy effect during your social gatherings, you should get solar powered “Soji lanterns”; they have the look of traditional Chinese lanterns, but these will help you save electricity.

18 The treasured tradition of sitting around the tree on Christmas morning opening presents will never go out of style, but the style of the gifts has certainly evolved! Techno-toys for all ages are the rage and what most these days dream about finding Santa has left; when it comes to the newest smartphone or modern age appliances with all the bells and whistles, holiday time brings out the inner child in all of us. We have collected here a sampling of gifts to be found around Aruba, many on the wish lists of today’s modern executive. When it comes to finding the perfect gift, useful with a touch of frivolity is usually what pleases most, along with knowing your intended recipient and their interests. Some are just beautifully decorative, making them perfect hostess gifts for the many end-of-the-year parties. We have also taken note of items that will nicely fit into the “Secret Santa” budget, which will allow gift givers to surprise a colleague with something they will appreciate, but won’t strain their spending limit in the least.

Going beyond computers for the newest in techno-toys is easy in Aruba, there are several shops that offer the latest in cell phones, PDA’s and other devices so in demand in our media-minded society. If your significant other wants a sleek cell phone with style, a diversity of the most current models can all be found. If they have a dedicated phone but need to easily access e-mail and love their media close at hand, then seek out the newest models of iPod Touch, with a choice of onboard memory, depending on your budget. Play movies, video games, store up to14,000 songs with the new 64 GB 3rd generation, and surf the net through WIFI on a 3.5 inch screen that provides vibrant color and quality equal to your computer.

Sharp Aquos received a 10 out of 10 score for image excellence among the new generation of HDTV’s from Trusted Reviews and was described by another website as the “best way to watch movies at home. Ever.” Aquos employs an LED backlight technology, which means sharper, brighter pict ure, more vivid color and superior contrast. Sharp Aquos was also judged the most energy efficient HDTV on the market and being free of heavy-metal content in construction, the most eco-friendly, as well. The Canon EOS 7D Digital Camera sports a whopping 18 MP output and CMOS memory, which means the the ultimate in image quality and speed for your photography fanatic. A versatile 28-135mm lens covers a broad spectrum and is ideal for most picture-taking situations; includes an advanced HD movie mode with manual exposure control and selectable frame rates, and a weather-sealed body, which makes it perfect for getting exciting shots and videos of extreme water sports! Available at Boolchand´s

If you are the sort of person that remembers all your colleagues, regular vendors, (like hairdressers) and every friend at Christmas, then small items for the home are perfect for those who like to entertain or just simply be surrounded by beautiful things. They work well when uncertain of the recipient’s taste in personal items. If you aren’t sure of the color scheme of a home, you can find a diversity of items in glass, wicker, black and white or multicolor, which will always be a match. Great stocking stuffers for kids such as cute animal body scrubbers, plush creatures and trinket boxes, a favorite for all ages, are always sure bet.

We found an absolutely stunning mirrored chess set with multi-colored glass playing pieces, which meets a multitude of gift giving purposes, and is bargain-priced, to boot; it will be a wonderful surprise for anyone who enjoys the game, or simply a beautiful gift. All of these items, from the wicker tower to a diversity of hostess items can fit into the “Secret Santa” budget. Presents for the home are always useful, and you don’t have to worry if they don’t like that scent or it isn’t the right size!

Baranca di Bida

‘Baranca di Bida’ is located in the green heart of Moko. This unique allotment for seniors (50+) in an Aruban countryside is extremely nature friendly and provides tranquility, privacy and recreation to its residents. Strolling on several course paths along authentic rock parties, for which this project is named, one can admire and enjoy the complete project and its parks. It is planned to build approximately 133 houses on an area of 83,000 m2 property land. The various houses will be arranged in small cozy streets, which are made of asphalt while at the entrance of the project the road is made of red bricks which give the project a Be er Homes N.V. character. Each house has a front porch overlooking the street. For the seniors’ safety we have consciously chosen for asphalt roads, because it is more accessible and easier for walking, and the use of wheelchair, rollators, scoot mobiles, etc. A swimming pool, gazebo and a gym will be part of the recrea onal area. In the heart of `Baranca di Bida’ a typical Aruban house is being restored for gathering purposes. At one side of the project there will be a commercaial zone, which is intended to house a doctor’s office, a drugstore, a hairdresser, a minimarket and restaurant, where the residents can consume a simple meal. `Baranca di Bida’ is a project for those who want live in a resident here they can grow old pleasantly. Currently, inquiries are being done in order to suite the desires and necessi es of the future residents.

23 25

Security:

At the only entrance/exit of ‘Baranca di Bida’ a guard will be posted 24/7 to monitor who enters or leave this property. For addi onal safety and tranquility for the seniors, another allotment plan named ‘Moko Homes & Gardens’ will be constructed almost completely around `Baranca di Bida’. Although origina ng from the same APFA property as ‘Baranca di Bida’, it is considered a seperate development. The two projects will be separated by 1.75 meters high walls. The residents of Moko homes & Gardens are not to use any of the facili es of `Baranca di Bida’.

Greenery:

Twenty per cent of the development will be dedicated to the exis ng nature green, with for example, on the south side a large park with those big boulders that are found on the property. In most of the street corners a small park will be created with lush greenery, shade and garden benches.

Color your living room The Minimalist design style became very popular during the late 1960s and early 1970s. This new movement in architectural and interior design – simple, yet elegant - used the works of leading contemporary artists from different parts of the world as their main source of inspiration. Some of the pioneering contemporary artists who left their mark on this design style were American contemporary artists like Donald Judd, Agnes Martin, Robert Morris, and Frank Stella. In Europe you had “De Stijl” (“The Style” in Dutch) artists, like Piet Mondrian, Van Doesburg and Bart Van Der Leck, whose architectural and furniture design style are still popular today. Next we present you some tips on how to create a colorful minimalist style living room.

MINIMALIST DESIGN M

When decora ng a minimalist style living room, your mo o should W aalways be: “less is more”. This style of decora ng places a lot of eemphasis on the concept of “form follows func on”. Every item in the rroom should have a prac cal func on. To create the feeling of space you n need to eliminate what is not necessary in your living room and carefully sselect a few unique items tthat serve a specific purpose. A PEACEFUL

SANCTUARY

After working almost non-stop for 8 hours or more at the office or after spending a whole day taking care of the little ones, it is important to have a place where you can settle down, relax and recharge your batteries for the following day. Next we give you some tips to help you transform your master bedroom into a peaceful sanctuary.

Peace = a state of tranquility or serenity.

Peaceful atmosphere

We spend around 2,920 hours each year sleeping in our beds, which is about a third of our lives. That makes the bedroom the single most important room in our homes. When decorating this space, the keywords that we need to keep in mind are: peace and comfort. Make sure to design a master bedroom that will make you feel calm and relaxed, the moment you walk through the door. To create this kind of atmosphere, you should cover your walls in soft, soothing colors like white, off-white or beige. Other colors you could use as well are natural, earthy color tones like: sage green, light olive green, light blue, soft gray and light yellow. These colors are very popular for the bedroom nowadays and they will help you create the feeling of peace and serenity you are looking for.

Beautiful bed linens

Spend some extra time this Christmas season looking around for new bed linens. If you have the budget for it, try investing in some highquality organic cotton bedding. They are a bit more expensive, but the cotton they are made of is grown without chemical fertilizers or pesticides, which makes this material better for your health. Opt for soft, neutral colors for your bedding to create the feeling of peace and calm in this room. Try getting bed linens that have incorporated some of the natural colors you have chosen as the color scheme for your bedroom. If your bedding set does not come with matching pillow covers, make sure to make or order a selection of throw pillows that will complete the look in your master bedroom.

Nice accessories

If your current bed does not have a headboard, try constructing one yourself – if you are a practical DIY – or else order one custom-made for your master bed. The headboard can help you turn your master bed in a stunning focal point in your bedroom. The headboard can be kept simple, with a layer of natural stain, or wrapped in luxurious chocolate brown leather. Finish off the decoration of your master bedroom by placing a beautiful painting or photograph above the master bed. Place some fresh-cut flowers around the room, and light up some nice-scented candles. It is time to start enjoying some peace and quiet in your private sanctuary…

Art with

Grace

ake a whirlwind of energy, creativity and a mix of cultural influences and you get a good whiff of the essence of local artist Grace Ashruf Rahusen. At the time of our interview she was super busy, with a 30-piece exhibition to be set up and a holiday coming up right on its heels. But she takes it all in stride. Grace is proud of her work, which is striking, bold and intriguing. Canvases painted with primary colors and textures, interspersed with references to Aruba’s past, are lined up at the wall of the studio.

Grace is of Indian descent, born in Surinam. Her grandparents came to work there, along with many others. She grew up in that country, but when she met her husband Ferdinand, who worked for a mulnaonal, her world widened. The couple has lived in Guatemala and Curaçao before they came to Aruba. Friends are important to Grace: they make up for the absence of family and they make you feel that you belong somewhere, even if

you are far away from your roots. Doing sports is essenall as wellll to her: “You get a lot of energy from it. And then you can fly,” she explains. The arst works at four or five canvases simultaneously. Using the best quality paints, she only signs her work when it is finished, and this might take a while somemes. Her first start in the world of art was in realism, but soon she moved to abstract forms.

33

Her seascape series gave her the idea to concentrate on horizons, with their limitlessness and possibilies. ``What is above or beneath a horizon makes a painng.’’ Painng is also a form of cleansing for Grace. “Somemes I have an idea in my head, but I am taken over by the paint and something else evolves. It’s most interesng”. Foil, sand, paper and other textures are used in her painngs. The elegant, youthful, energec arst does not sit down to take a breath: even before her collecon has been shown she has made a start with a new series. By the me we are finished, we have a good idea what makes Grace unique. A unique and wonderful aer thought: Grace does not wear a watch: she does not think in numbers or in me. “I want to live melessly,” she says..

Unique Christmas

wreaths

The Christmas wreath – that adorns many doors throughout the world during the end of the year season – is becoming more popular each year. These beautiful holiday ornaments, used outdoors as well as indoors, have come a long way. They found their way through time from ancient Rome to the United States all the way to the Caribbean, where they are being used to beautify homes and wish visitors and those passing by “Peace” and “Good Wishes” for the Christmas season...

Short History

The word “wreath” comes from the old English word “writhen”, which means to twist. The traditional Christmas wreath, made of evergreen branches, was bended to form a circular shape. Many sources point to ancient Rome as their place of origin, where they were given to military heroes, kings and Olympic Games athletes. Wreaths were constructed out of branches of the pine, cedar, laurel and the olive tree. The symbolic meanings of the wreath are many. The ancient Greeks related it to their Greek god Apollo, who was associated with life and health.

35 To the generations that followed in Europe, the color of the evergreens signified hope and new life, after a tough winter season. And to the Protestants and Catholics living in Europe and the United States in the 16th century, it was linked to their faith in Christ: the symbol of God’s love and everlasting life.

Nowadays

These days Christmas wreaths come in all shapes and colors. If in the past you could find wreaths only made of evergreen branches, today you will find them made of any material. They are constructed out of glitter balls, fresh flowers, edible gingerbread, sea shells, recycled carton or even used wine corks. Whatever your taste or budget, there is a Christmas wreath out there for you. And if not, you can always make one yourself.

RECYCLED CHRISTMAS DECORATION

re•cy•cle, v.t., -cled, -cling. 1. To treat or process (used or waste materials) so as to make suitable for reuse. 2. To use again with minimal alteration. 3. To cause to pass through a cycle again. Whenever used materials are processed into new products to prevent the waste of potentially useful materials and reduce the consumption of fresh raw materials, we are speaking of recycling. Materials that can easily be recycled are: paper, plastic, glass, metal, textiles and electronics. People have been practicing the art of recycling as far back as 400 B.C., the time when the Greek philosopher Plato lived, and has continued until today, where it is being applied by companies all around the world that want to contribute to creating a healthier environment. So join us in making this Christmas season a joyful time, both for us, and for the environment by recycling your Christmas decorations ... Most of us have boxes of old and rather outdated Christmas decorations from past years tucked somewhere. The decorations haven’t been used in years but are too good to be thrown out. Now is the time to have a second good look at it: can you recycle some of it, or should you toss it. When in doubt: House Complete is here to the rescue. First check out your Christmas balls: are they chipped and faded? That’s not a problem. You can spray-paint them in the color of choice of this year’s holiday and decorate with stars in a contrasting color. Then take a bowl and mix them with pine cones (natural or painted) and pine twigs. If you also have giant Christmas balls, you pimp them up too and line them up on a ledge, four in a row: stunning!

37 Dusty, horrid-looking candles get new a new life span when you use a template and silver or gold paint to spice them up, while a garland may look great hanging from a lamp with a lovely, shiny Christmas ornament hanging from it. If you love snow: paint the ornament in question white, then go all out with the snow flakes. The flakes disappear after a few weeks, so keep that in mind.

Mirrors, serving trays and glass vases are terrific items for decorations. They may be used in various ways, with twinkling lights, fresh flowers combined with sweet-smelling twigs of pine and (floating) candles. Christmas trees made of carton, tree decorations made of recycled paper and tree ornaments created out of used CD’s and DVD’s.

Green Tip: When wrapping up your gifts this year, give them a “green” touch by reusing old gift bags, boxes, wrapping paper, ribbons or other decorative items you have saved from last year. Or, start saving those this year and have a ‘green’ Christmas next year!

Insure a by being fire smart and safe ccording the United State Fireman’s Associaon, fires ocurring during the holiday season account for 2, 600 injries and $930 million in damage; Aruba’s figures may not be so extreme, but baling a fire, no maer how small, will spoil anyone’s holiday spirit.

Christmas: Fire hazards at Christ-

mas are usually incidences inside the home, o en from billowing curtains catching on fire from openly burning candles. Christmas trees that are not kept in water, or have been out from early in the season and neglected, become dry and are a serious fire risk. Make sure to keep the tree hydrated, so if there is an electrical short in your tree lights this will not be such a hazard, as tests have shown a dry tree can be c completely ablaze within 3 seconds f from the first spark. When W decora ng the tree or home with lights fr from previous years, check for frayed edges, g in the insula on, bare spots or broken sockgaps e Do not overload outlets or connect more ets. t than three strings of lights; first plug into an extension e cord, then into the outlet. Check them p periodically to see if the wires feel warm, and

never leave them on una ended. Again, the greatest hazard at Christmas for most in Aruba is open candles. If you must use them, make sure they are in stable holders that won’t easily be knocked over. The same is true when doing your holiday cooking; never leave a stove una ended, par cularly when cooking with oils or foods with a high fat content. If a grease fire starts, use an ex nguisher or cover the pot and smother the fire, never pour water on a grease fire-this will only make it spread.

39 37

When igning fireworks, be sure to place them on a level surface in a stable launcher, clear of any combusble material and not aimed at any buildings. Never hold lit fireworks; they may be defecve and explode in your hand.

New Year’s Eve: This is a me that kids love and mothers dread.

Fireworks are great fun, but must be handled cauously; each year Aruba’s emergency room treats paents for lost fingers and burns resulng from ill use of fireworks. #1 rule: NEVER ALLOW A CHILD TO USE FIREWORKS UNSUPERVISED. Always read cauonary material instrucons.

Always keep a bucket of water or a hose handy; do not try to relight a firework that has malfunconed, but hose it down thoroughly. Do not look down a tube of a large “batata” that has not launched aer a reasonable me; you might find out it is only delayed, as did one man two years ago, resulng in serious facial burns and eye damage. Most fire departments have a slogan regarding fireworks: “Leave them to the professionals!” with very good reason. In Aruba they are a tradion, and no one can imagine ending the old year without a pagara; so be wise, and start the New Year right.

LAGO REFINERY AT CHRISTMAS During World War II the refinery operated under complete blackout as was the Colony. After the war was over the lights came on again and soon the Cat Cracker was lit like a Christmas Tree each Christmas. At the time it was billed as the tallest, largest Christmas Tree in the World. The first Christmas there were not many lights but as years progressed the lights grew in number, a star was added to the top and soon the star was made to rotate, so it seemed to go off and on or flash. At about 23 stories, it probably was the tallest structure in the world, decorated as a tree, at the time.
