POETICS

‘Bauhaus Principles’ [PREFACE] The workshop uses a systematic approach inspired by Bauhaus principles of craftsmanship and visual perception. The arrangement of several analog-digital captures into unique photographic sequences poses intriguing possibilities leading to the evaluation of space and light. [SCHEMAS] Schemas are analytic diagrams , which purpose is to uncover hidden underlying forces, geometries, and structures embedded into the sequence strip. [DIGITAL RELIEF] The digital relief was a transitional study between two-dimensional and three-dimensional worlds; thus exploring the pure poetic potential of computers in architecture.

[PREFACE] The concept developed by Bernard Tschumi in Parc d’ la Villette, ‘folly’, was studied and applied in Lubbock, TX. The folly was designed upon a diagram composed out of different layers of information: grid systems, preassures+forces, bands, and nodes. [PROPOSAL] The proposal takes place on an alley located in a residential neighborhood, with a local market and a school. Such alley is a narrow space shared by multiple actors. Therefore, the site was considered an “in-between” site due to the different urban actors involved. With the composite diagram, the intent of “expanding” the alley both spatially and programmatically became the narrative of the project.

GENERIC v. NON-GENERIC

‘PuppenHaus: Fashion Centré’ 806 6th street, AUSTIN, TX

[PREFACE] This studio’s central theme of departure is that of the generic, by asking the question: What does it mean to be generic? Is it conceptual, structural, or both? [PROGRAM] The program is mixed-used consisting a mannequin factory, mannequin+fashion gallery, catwalk+runway, recreational space, offices, and condos. [PROPOSAL] The solution was to make the proposal a connective tissue among the community of 6th street. The proposed pedestrian flows became “strips” with different programmatic arrangements. Such programmatic strips become a complex generic system throughout the project. The structure of the strips is steel. The suggestion of a concrete“block” for warehouse was the evident solution to break the fluidity and create a non-generic moment within the project by implementing a stationary moment in the composition. The “Strip v. Block” (fluidity v. stationary) concept is a direct juxtaposition of the city; while the block is a on-generic condition in the proposal, a block is contextual generic condition in the city of Austin.

[strip v. block, programmatic strips] The initial diagrammatic studies about circulation led to its manipulation guided by the idea of the “strip”. By “pulling” circulation flows into the project allows the possibility to a more sensible interaction among different urban actors. Therefore the programmatic proposal is organized in strips: main strip, fashion strip, residential strip and egress strip. This condition is then juxtaposed by the stationary block; which 04.composite hosts the mannequin warehouse and the parking garage.

DISRUPTIVE SKIN

‘LiF-eGreen Resort 1065 13th street, LUBBOCK, TX

[PREFACE] the main intent of the proposal is to design a resort that both activates site conditions [such as the alley and the corner of 13th street + ave J], as well as implements a new urban culture within the community of Lubbock by promoting urban farming and sustainability. [PROGRAM] The program consist of residential, plant-growing areas, circulation park, retail, and gallery [PROPOSAL] site proposal01_ design a circulation park to activate the corner. site proposal02_ design retail space parallel to the alley. site proposal03_ spread the green/growing throughout the building in order to connect the different programs. New skin systems confront the existing structural system: the skin punctures the structure, making a proposal for an inside-outside condition and a continuity of facade, roof and slab.

‘Urban Flexibility’ Mullae-Dong SEOUL, SK

[CONTEXTUAL STRATA] The proposed intervention will act as a stitch within the series of tensions in Mullae-dong. the proposed insertion will respond directly to the contextual strata of site-specific Mullae-dong, Seoul. Situated as a boundary between two factors; metal manufacturing processes and a newly developed high-rise residential complex. The proposed site provides a unique void for inquiries. The void, acting as a border, is currently an impervious surface occupied by vehicular parking. Existing conditions do not encourage haptic, human-scale relationships nor ecological engagements. The specific criteria of the proposed insertion includes manipulation of an existing building and parking surface. Proposal seek to provide stronger contextual connectivity back to the city by creating a ‘place of making’. This Place of Making is made up of three primary spaces: demonstrating, making, and exhibiting. [NARRATIVE] “flexibility of space on ground level and their negotiations of change in elevation+time.” Such flexibility was achieved both programmatically and spatially: the flexibility of the ‘places of making’ and the spatial flexibility between the new plate with the existing topography.

MEET ME HALFWAY

‘Elevated Housing’

Cottage Grove station, CHICAGO, IL

[PREFACE] Controlled interactions between private (residents) and public (urban actors) was the main programmatic idea behind the proposal. Giving the contextual conditions in South Side Chicago, designing a place where the residents could be exposed to the urban fabric was important in order to develop a sense of community in a decaying Midwest neighborhood. The elevated train line was further analyzed and used as a site strategy in which the project could respond both physically and programmatically. Such response led to the development of special configurations in which public and private “met halfway” by a series of controlled interactions or awareness between both actors. Public space hosting an amphitheater disrupts the “housing bars” physically and programmatically.

[TOP} ”Conceptual Translation: Site Strategy (plan)”_ The contextual condition of the termination of the green line was used as a strategy in which the new designed urban interaction space (public +private) would conceptually help the infrastructure to “loop” or “turn around”. [BOTTOM] “Conceptual Translation: Design Strategy (section)”_ The conception of two separate entities (public on bottom, private on top) running east to west (same direction as the adjacent elevated train) led to the idea of pulling the public fabric up while pushing the private program own in order to create a zone of “controlled interaction” between both programs.
