Scott Spouses’ Club Newsletter

Happy Summer SSC Members! Hopefully you had a moment to read the last issue of THE CONTACT (newsletter) that highlighted all of the wonderful accomplishments of the SOSC 2013-2014 board achievements! We cannot thank the board enough for their hard work, dedication and the big difference they’ve made for the entire Scott AFB and surrounding community. We’d like to give a round of APPLAUSE to the SESC for all of their helping hands with each of the fundraising events this year, as well as a thanks to their board for all of the dedication and for helping join forces to make the new Scott Spouses Club. In an effort to continue to make a difference, the new board for the upcoming 2013-2014 year has many new exciting plans! Block your calendars now for the SECOND Wednesday each month to attend our fun-filled functions. This all begins on September 11 (see flier insert for more details) !! This year; just like last year, they will once again be touching lives and lifting spirits for the new SSC and many military families! Be sure to come meet our new board and mingle with our fantastic members. As summer fast approaches, many of you may be leaving us for the next new adventure in your life ~ we wish you God Speed. As we all know, some people come into our lives and quietly go. Others stay for a while and leave footprints in our hearts and we are never the same! Our time together has truly been a blessing, and I thank you for making that “difference” by your contributions to the SSC! Enjoy the summer with your family and friends! We look forward to seeing you in September!

God Bless America

The New 2013-2014 Scott Spouses’ Club The new Scott Spouses’ Club of 2013-2014 is seeking a new governing body! Both Spouse Clubs at Scott AFB will officially merge and become one club on June 5, 2013 and we need your help! The Scott Spouses’ Club is a private, non-profit organization that functions on the efforts of military spouses like you. You can impact the community in a positive way by stepping up to a role on the new board! In fact, the Spouse Clubs at Scott AFB are notorious for having a positive impact on their stakeholders. By focusing their energies on both charitable and social components, each year they have the luxury of donating tens of thousands of dollars into the local community and bringing lifelong friends together that might not have otherwise met. By participating, your gifts and abilities will represent a golden thread in the beautiful tapestry of all the collaborative efforts of fellow military spouses. Think of the possibilities! The Scott Spouses’ Club is governed by an Executive Board and a Board of Governors. Each year a new Board takes their seat in the club to serve their community through collaborative volunteer efforts. We are searching for a wide spectrum of talents to bring into the new board to make the new combined club successful. If you have found yourself having thoughts and opinions of how the Scott Spouses’ Club should operate, you may be just the spouse we are looking for to serve on the new board! Volunteering your efforts in the new club will not only help to mold and shape it in a positive way, but will be very rewarding to you and the Scott AFB community. Consider your skills and abilities and how they might surmount to be an asset to the new club. For instance, do you have profound administrative, social, or accounting skills? Do you have a knack for bringing people together? Are you a behind-the-scenes sort of person? All skills and personalities are welcome! Perhaps you need to speak to someone further about how your skills and talents are equivalent to certain board positions. No problem! Send inquiries to Stephanie Price at parliamentarian@scottosc.com. Are you ready for the task? You can find the application and job descriptions here: http://bit.ly/10LyvLi. If you’re still on the fence, fill out an application anyway just to get your name in the pot and we can discuss this opportunity further with you. We’re looking forward to a fun-filled year!

Please find the new Scott Spouses’ Club Budgets and Constitution & Bylaws on the Scott OSC website!

What’s the Difference Between a KEY SPOUSE and a SPOUSE CLUB? Key Spouse • Trained volunteer • Extension of Squadron/Unit • Purpose is Family Readiness

• Not a social club • Establishes a credible, informal support network at the “grass roots” level

• Engages in Privacy Act info • Vital link for families of deployed members

• Welcomes incoming individuals & families

Spouse Club • Private, self-sustaining, non-profit, independent organization

• Base-wide

• Purpose is to develop, organize &

sponsor educational, charitable, & social activities

• Governed by a Board of Governors • Paid Membership

• Not part of the Department of Defense or any of its components and has no governmental status

It’s the End of an Era

May was the last month of mini club activities for the 2012-2013 year.

Karen Tollman, our historian, has created a wonderful, one-time newsletter, with SOSC photos dating back to the 1960s! This will be printed for future reference and will be a great memento for us all!

The New Scott Spouses’ Club On Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at the base golf course, Cardinal Creek, the Enlisted Spouses and the Officers’ Spouses clubs became one. Spouses clubs started in the 1940’s as a place for camaraderie and traditions and it continued to grow to raise funds and help support the base and local communities. As the new Scott Spouses’ Club moves forward with new traditions and new friendships, our mission will continue; to volunteer where needed and to raise funds to support our base families and surrounding community. If you would like to be a member of the SSC, please go to our website (currently under construction) www.scottspousesclub.com for more information.

Scholarships Scholastics Awarded Scholarships & &Scholastics Awarded Every year in May the Scott Officers Spouses Club and Enlisted Spouses Club hold a reception for the winners of our combined Scholarship and Scholastic Award Program. The Scott Spouses Clubs fundraise all year so they can present as many scholarships as possible to high school dependents and military spouses. We also have opportunities for local schools to apply for scholastic awards to fund projects in their school that would not get funded otherwise. The Scott Spouses Clubs were busy this year working at the Air Show, selling cookies, gift wrapping at the BX, and sponsoring a Trivia Night and Silent Auction that rose over $11,000 dollars. The Scott Consignment Thrift Shop also helped sponsor the event. This year many businesses from downtown donated at various levels to be co-sponsors for scholarships. First Command, Newbold Toyota, Newbold BMW donated at our Platinum Level, and Geico, Bank of Edwardsville, and Auffenburg Hyundai donated at our Silver Level. With their contributions, we were able to present 15 scholarships to high school dependents and 3 military spouses. Totaled outlay this year was over $20,000 in scholarships and scholastic awards to 11 schools. The reception was held at the Essex House on base on May 1, 2013 at 7 pm. We had 75 people in attendance and we served light refreshments. Mrs. Kelly Barrett was the Scott Club’s Scholarship and Scholastic chairperson and we would like to thank Mrs. Evelyn McDew, Mr. Mark BliceBaum, Mr. Steve Thompson, CMSgt Brandy Petzel and CMSgt Todd Petzel for judging. We’d like to thank Colonel David Almand, 375 Air Mobility Wing, Commander for his inspiring remarks.
