Dear Friends of Cristo Rey, This year’s annual report features stories of perseverance, determination, generosity, and above all, leadership. Take the time to page through this publication, and you will find impressive narrative and statistics about the young women and men of Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Pilsen. Our students come to us after 8th grade as shy and sometimes timid youth, and graduate confident, educated, well-spoken young adults ready to take leadership roles in all aspects of life.

Cristeros make me proud every day. They show up to Cristo Rey with near perfect attendance with visible hope and determination in their eyes. They work hard in the classroom and in the office to make their equally hard-working parents proud. They play hard on the field and in the gymnasium, while showing empathy and support to their teammates and competitors. They graduate as men and women for others and proudly represent the Rey all over the country. And now, they are coming back to give back to the future of Cristo Rey. Talk about a model of success!

All of this is only possible because of the support of hundreds of people and companies every year, now for nearly a quarter of a century. You are the reason we are able to provide this Catholic, college preparatory education and professional work experience to 600 young people.

The vision of Cristo Rey is to advance the human and intellectual capacities, as well as the religious and cultural heritage, of the immigrant families it serves. Through its Corporate Work Study Program, faith-based college preparatory education, and Spanish heritage language curriculum, the goal is to prepare students to succeed in college and to assume leadership roles in the civic, religious, business, and cultural life of our city and nation. As committed alumni of a Jesuit high school, graduates become men and women for others who are open to growth, religious, intellectually competent, loving, committed to justice, and work experienced. While academics and work study play an integral role at the school, students reach out beyond the classroom to fulfill their student experience.

This year, students showed us their leadership through their participation in sports, clubs and activities, and more.

Los Chicos is a club at Cristo Rey for young men dedicated to reflection and self-improvement for the future of our community.

Moderator and religion teacher Juan Miguel Alvarez has created a space for young men to bond over some of the most interesting, challenging, confusing, and fun parts of what it means to be a Latino male. One of Los Chicos’ goals for the year was to organize a fundraiser involving the entire school and contributing to a good cause. Their ‘Penny War’ fundraiser raised more than $1,700 for charity:water, an organization that builds wells in villages that do not have access to clean water.

This past summer, one in five students attended summer enrichment programs around the city, country, and world – 15 to international programs. These programs prepare our students and their families for the necessity of leaving home in search of post-secondary educational opportunities, while providing opportunities to not only help them compete for admission and resources at more selective colleges, but also to grow as individuals.

In May, sophomore Nelly Martinez qualified for the Illinois High School Association State track and field meet for discus. Not only did Nelly set the Cristo Rey record for the event, she was the first sophomore and the first female Track and Field team athlete to represent Cristo Rey in a state meet. To mark the event, Cristo Rey celebrated its first ever ‘La Marcha Cristera.’ Students paraded around the school, culminating in a pep rally in the gym to send Nelly off in Cristero style.

Teachers and Supervisors working together for our Leaders of Tomorrow Last year, Cristo Rey teachers participated in Teacher-to-Work Day by visiting a student at their Corporate Work Study job site to meet with the student and their supervisor and learn about the student’s work. The purpose of the visit was for teachers to better understand the student’s work experience and identify skills they could develop with students in the classroom that would complement what students do at work.

This year, Cristo Rey reversed Teacher-to-Work Day and gave supervisors the opportunity to visit Cristo Rey, learning more about our school culture on Supervisor-to-School Day. Nearly 30 supervisors spent the day with more than 35 Cristo Rey teachers and staff to explore synergistic skills and knowledge Cristo Rey students need to be successful in college and career. Teacher Colleen Caragher reflected on Supervisor-to-School Day: “The more we, the adults at work and at school, can reinforce student learning in both places, the more effective and transformative the Cristo Rey student experience will be. In order to do that, we need to be on the same page about what we hope to accomplish for and with our students. These activities help us do that.”

With the class of 2019, Cristo Rey now boasts more than 2,000 Cristeros who are setting the world on fire as leaders in their communities. Alumni are living the mission as men and women for others by giving their time and talent back to their alma mater and to the future of Cristo Rey. Dozens of alumni work and volunteer at Cristo Rey, serve on committees of the Leadership Advisory Council, moderate student clubs, coach athletic teams, and support the school financially.

Cristo Rey is committed to providing assistance to and creating programming for alumni to continue to grow and lead.

This year, Cristo Rey offered several opportunities for alumni to network with their former classmates and peers. Clarisol and Omar Duque (third and fourth from left) joined an Alumni Happy Hour to talk about their work in Chicago’s Latino community, their support of inner city education.

increase in alumni giving since last year This past year, Cristo Rey saw an increase in alumni participation for networking events and school fundraising events. Cristo Rey alumni from nearly every graduating class since 1998 were represented at major fundraising events including Homecoming, Las Mujeres de Cristo Rey, and ¡VIVA!. Other events drew specific classes back to the school. Alums from the class of 2004 honored their friend and classmate, Sergio, whose story was told in the late Rafael Torch’s book, The Garcia Boy. Torch was a former Cristo Rey teacher and dean at Cristo Rey. A panel discussion about the book was held at the school in April.

Cristo Rey hosted its inaugural Homecoming Tailgate, presented by Wintrust, a fun-filled October afternoon of great food, a mariachi performance, and plenty of games, and spirits. Board and LAC members, old friends, and teachers, as well as St. Stephen’s alumni, came back to campus to partake in the fun and tour the school with our senior Ambassadors. That evening, members of the classes of 1998, 2003, 2008, and 2013 came back to the Cristo Rey cafeteria to reminisce with old classmates, teachers, and staff. A special appearance by founding principal, Sr. Judy Murphy, capped off a memorable day.

by LKQ Corporation, took place on May 2 at Morgan Manufacturing. More than 400 business and civic leaders joined together to raise more than $625,000 in support. Board leads by example in giving challenge In October 2018, the Cristo Rey Board of Directors announced its Alumni Challenge and pledged a $25,000 match, pushing alumni to reach new heights in philanthropy and engagement by issuing a challenge with impressive goals for giving. Alumni gifts made now through October 5, 2019 will be matched one for one, and each gift will unlock additional funds up to $25,000, effectively doubling the impact of every gift.

Blessed Miguel Agustin Pro Juaréz, SJ, preached and brought the sacraments to various parts of Mexico City.

Miguel Pro (1891-1927), a priest and martyr, finished his secondary education by uniting his efforts to a life of prayer. Executed as part of the persecution of Catholics in Mexico, Miguel Pro shouted, “¡Viva, Cristo Rey!” as his life ended. Members of the Miguel Pro Companions are recognized for providing substantial backing for Catholic, college preparatory education for future leaders in their community.

Compañeros de Fr. Jacques Marquette, SJ $10,000 - $24,999 Father Jacques Marquette, SJ (1637-1675) was a French Jesuit missionary known for his explorations in the Great Lakes region in the 1670’s. He spread Christianity to many American Indians in the local region. Fr. Marquette spent his final winter near the South Branch of the Chicago River, just blocks away from Cristo Rey’s school campus. Compañeros de St. Kateri Tekakwitha $1,000 - $2,499 Saint Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-1680), born in present day New York, is called the Lily of the Mohawks.

Despite her community’s disapproval of Christianity, she began to practice Catholicism at the age of 18. A few years later she fled her village and moved to Canada, where she fervently practiced Catholicism. In 1943, she was the first Native American to be venerated in the Roman Catholic Church, followed by her canonization in 2012. Members of the St. Kateri Tekakwitha Companions are recognized for being courageous servants of God, may we continue to wholeheartedly embody her commitment to Him. Mr. Joshua E. Seniors re-enact the history of when Mary appeared to Juan Diego in 1531 on the hill of Tepeyac in Mexico City. The Mass is followed by a Cristo Rey-style celebration: food prepared by our Parents Club, mariachi, dancing, and more.

St. Stephen devoted much of his reign to the growth of Christianity in his kingdom. He not only built churches and monasteries, but he also saw Christ Himself when assisting the poor. St. Stephen was canonized in 1083 and later became the patron saint of Hungary. Cristo Rey faculty, staff, friends, and supporters came down to the Lakefront for a 5K and 10K run/ walk, followed by food, music, and celebration at Cristo Rey.
