Dillany León Sánchez, adolescente colombiana de 14 años, realizó el dibujo de esta tarjeta en un taller de fotografía dictado por Cristian Ochoa durante el año 2016, en el campamento El Bosque de la ciudad de Antofagasta, Chile. Para hacerlo se apropió de una imagen de google sobre los desplazados. Es imposible quedar indiferente con dicha imagen, en donde adultos cargan con gestos de confianza los bultos llenos de recuerdos y de abrigo, incluyendo la imagen de la virgen como señal de protección, pero una que solo es capaz de cargar la fe cotidiana de la sobrevivencia.

Dillany León Sánchez, a fourteen year old Colombian teenage girl made the drawing on this card in a photography workshop imparted by Cristian Ochoa at the El Bosque shanty town in Antofagasta (Chile) during 2016. To make it, she appropriated a Google image of displaced people.

It is impossible to remain indifferent to said image, in which adults confidently carry their bags full of memories and clothes, including the image of the virgin as a sign of protection, albeit one that is only capable of carrying the everyday faith of survival.

Las fotografías aquí publicadas y los textos extraídos de múltiples entrevistas realizadas por Ochoa, nos sumergen en una historia humana desgarradora, la de la inmigración, en un contexto global que augura más acecho, control y vigilancia; mientras en nuestra austral región, persisten muros de discriminación.

Los motivos para migrar son diversos: la violencia, la economía, el sueño chileno con sus falsas expectativas sobre la economía del “jaguar”, que más parece una campaña para salvaguardar un sistema neoliberal feroz, que una real probabilidad de proyección.

La playa y el sol también son razones, pero nadie comenta que entre el paraíso de facebook y la imagen país están los cerros yermos y el paisaje baldío, territorio que muta a diario con el enriquecimiento de los colores, la música, la plasticidad corpórea, la comida, el lenguaje y la cultura de quienes enriquecen nuestras vidas. Aquello nos hace evidenciar lo latinoamericanos que somos, algo que en estas latitudes quisimos por décadas omitir. Aquellos que buscan nuevos horizontes nos permiten volver a hablar de pertenencia y terruño.

Estamos instalados en un momento relevante de nuestro devenir latino, en el cual debemos pensar la construcción histórica, simbólica y política sobre nuestras independencias, sobre la escenificación del mestizaje, tanto desde la violencia con la cual nos edificamos y las creencias que nos fueron impuestas, para poder mirar a través de nuestras propias cosmovisiones. Esta publicación contribuye a reflexionar acerca de un nuevo escenario cargado de políticas y poéticas del cuerpo, la memoria y el futuro de nuestros países.

El sueño sudamericano se inició como un trabajo de investigación para visualizar el conflicto de la migración colombiana en el norte de Chile, en específico en la ciudad de Antofagasta, para expandirse a otros espacios territoriales y sistemas de difusión, talleres y ocupación del espacio público, como una forma de proponer y repensar nuestras formas de convivencia y coexistencia.

The photographs published here and the texts extracted from multiple interviews conducted by Ochoa submerge us in a harrowing human story of immigration, in a global context that predicts more harassment, control and surveillance, while in our southern region, walls of discrimination prevail.

The reasons for migrating are diverse: violence, the economy, the Chilean dream with its false expectations on the “jaguar” (pacific tiger) economy, which seems more a campaign to safeguard a fierce neoliberal system than a real chance for projection.

The beach and the sun are reasons too, but nobody comments that there are barren hills and a fallow landscape in between the Facebook paradise and the country image; a territory mutating on a daily basis with the richness of colors, music, physical plasticity, food, language and culture of those uplifting our lives. That makes us evidence how Latin American we are, something that we tried to omit for decades. Those seeking new horizons allow us to again speak of belonging and homeland.

We are at a relevant moment of our Latin development, in which we have to think of the historical, symbolic and political construction of our independences, the staging of miscegenation, both from the violence with which we edify ourselves and the beliefs that were imposed on us, in order to be able to look through our own world views. This publication makes a contribution towards reflecting on a new scenario charged with policies and poetics of the body, memory and the future of our countries.

The South American dream began as a research work to visualize the conflict of Colombian migration in northern Chile, specifically in the city of Antofagasta, to expand to other territorial spaces and dissemination systems, workshops and public space occupation, as a way of proposing and rethinking our forms of coexistence.

Chile tendrá un vuelco maravilloso en unos años más.

Van a ver morenas hablando chileno y esas niñas, que tendrán una piel espectacular y su pelo crespo dirán que son chilenas, no colombianas, ni ecuatorianas, ni haitianas.

Cuando eso pase, se disparará todo. Entiendan que hay gente que ha venido a hacer cosas buenas.

Chile will take a wonderful 180-degree turn in a few more years.

There will be more dark skinned girls speaking Chilean, and those girls, who will have spectacular skin and their curly hair, will say they are Chileans, not Colombians or Ecuadorians or Haitians.

When that happens, things will go off. You have to understand that some people came here to do good things.

Una mirada a la migración, desde el duelo que se origina al partir y la necesidad de reivindicación de cada migrante, es la propuesta que reunió a jóvenes de entre 15 y 29 años provenientes de Perú, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia y Chile. Todos residentes de cuatro campamentos del sector “Los Arenales” de Antofagasta y con vivencias en común: la necesidad de empoderamiento del territorio que habitan y la de reflexión y análisis de su historia migratoria.

A view to the migration, starting on the grief that originates when they leave and the need of every migrant, was the proposal which brought together young people between the ages of 15 and 29 from Perú, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia y Chile. All residents of four settlements from the “Los Arenales” neighborhood of Antofagasta and with common life experiences: the need of empowerment of the territory where they live and also the need of reflection and analysis of the migration story.

Una gran cantidad de los padres partieron a Chile solos, hasta poder establecerse y así, traer sus familias. La única forma fue tomándose terrenos, debido a lo ridículamente costosa que es la ciudad (Burbuja inmobiliaria). Tomaron un lugar inicialmente no habitable, lleno de escombros y basura, al cual le dieron vida, formando comunidad.

A lot of parents felt the need of pursuing a better quality of life, so they came to Chile to settle in and after a while be able to bring their families with them. The only way was to inhabit grounds illegally do to ridiculously expensive that life is in the city of Antofagasta (housing bubble). They inhabited places full of rubble and rubbish, bringing it to life, creating a community.

El taller consistió en 8 clases en donde los alumnos conocieron y experimentaron diversas técnicas como la fotografía estenopeica, en donde usaron tarros de café para hacer tomas de su territorio.

También trabajaron la fotografía digital, usando sus celulares para registrar su entorno y círculo íntimo. Por último, trabajaron con el archivo fotográfico familiar, el cual les permitió encontrar las historias de aquellos familiares y amigos que migraron o que quedaron en sus tierras de origen.

The workshop consisted of 8 classes where the students met and experienced several techniques as the pinhole photography, using coffee cans to take shots of their territory. They also worked with digital photography using cellphones to register their environment and intimate circle. Towards the end, they worked with the family photographic record, which allowed them to find stories of those relatives and friends that migrated or stayed on their homelands.

De este proceso reflexivo y de creación conjunta, surgió una intervención fotográfica en el espacio público, realizada en la Cancha del “Campamento Chilenos Villa El Sol”, un viaje al interior en las vidas de todos los jóvenes participantes.

Esta exposición pudo ser apreciada por los vecinos del sector, quienes disfrutaron de las fotografías, documentos de viaje, dibujos, frases, conversaciones en las redes sociales, dedicatorias de parientes para sus familiares lejanos, entre otros.

Todo esto fue acompañado de comida, música y baile intercultural, además de la participación de stands de organizaciones de apoyo a migrantes.

Because of this reflective process and joint creation, emerged the photographic intervention in a public space, performed on the court of the settlement “Chilenos Villa El Sol” , a journey to the interior in the lives of the young participants. This exhibition was appreciated for neighbours who enjoined the photographs, travel documents, drawings, phrases, conversations in social networks, dedications of relatives to their distant family, among other things.

All this was accompanied with food, music and intercultural dances, besides the participation with stands of organizations that support migrants.

OBRA: EN MEDIO DEL DESIERTO El informe de la Comisión Dillingham (EEUU), un comité de inmigración del 1911, concluyó que “el mexicano es menos deseable como ciudadano que como obrero”. De forma similar, El Dr. George Clements de la Cámara de Comercio de Los Angeles, escribió en el 1929 que el trabajo agrícola era de un tipo “al cual los chinos y los mexicanos, con su costumbre de agachar e inclinarse, se adaptan totalmente.”

Reconociendo la necesidad de mano de obra agrícola, en 1917, el gobierno de los EEEUU contrato obreros mexicanos prescindiendo del requisito de alfabetización. Unas décadas después, decidieron que los migrantes mexicanos eran “desechables”. Entre los años 1930 y 1940, gran parte de la población mexicana de los EEUU fue deportada, disminuyendo su cantidad en un 40%. Durante los años posteriores, ocurrieron similares situaciones. ¿La vida de los migrantes es desechable ó debemos absorber (reciclar) esta información que nos traen y hacerla parte de nuestra cultura?

Obra: Caja de luz (para marcar un punto de atención, de visibilidad) hecha con materiales reciclados tomados de los hogares de migrantes de diferentes países, los cuales tomaron fotografías de su diario vivir con cámaras desechables, donde hablan de su familia, su conexión con el desierto y mar de la ciudad, religión, trabajos, ocio, etc., vidas para nada desechables. La obra es acompañada con un registro sonoro donde los migrantes hablan acerca de sus fotografías expuestas.

WORK: IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT The report of the DIlingham Commission (USA), a migration committe of 1911, concluded that “the mexican is less desirable as a citizen than as a worker”. In a similar way, Dr. George Clements of the Chamber of Commerce of Los Angeles, wrote in 1929 that the agricultural work was of a type that “chinesse and mexicans are used to, like their are used to bend and lean forward, they totally adapt”.

Recognizing the need of farm labor force, in 1927, the USA goverment hired Mexican workers disregarding the literacy precondition. A few decades later, decided that the Mexican migrants were “disposable”.

Between 1930 and 1940, a large proportion of the Mexican population in USA was deported, reducing their amount by 40%. During the following years, similary situations occurred.

Lives of migrants is disposable o we must absorb (recycle) the information that come with them and make it part of our culture?

Work: Light box (to remark a point of focus, of visibility) made with recycled materials took of the home of migrants from different countries, who took pictures of their daily life with disposable cameras, where they talk about their families, their connection with the desert and sea of the city, religión, jobs, hobbies, etc. Lives that are not disposable at all. The work is accompanied with sound records where migrants speak about the exposed pictures.
