Dillany León Sánchez, adolescente colombiana de 15 años, realizó este dibujo en un taller de fotografía dictado por Cristian Ochoa durante el año 2016, en el campamento El Bosque de la ciudad de Antofagasta, Chile. Para hacerlo se apropió de una imagen de google sobre los desplazados. Es imposible quedar indiferente con dicha imagen, en donde adultos cargan con gestos de confianza los bultos llenos de recuerdos y de abrigo, incluyendo la imagen de la virgen como señal de protección, pero una que solo es capaz de cargar la fe cotidiana de la sobrevivencia.

Las fotografías aquí publicadas y los textos extraídos de múltiples entrevistas realizadas por Ochoa, nos sumergen en una historia humana desgarradora, la de la inmigración, en una un contexto global que augura más acecho, control y vigilancia; mientras en nuestra austral región, persisten muros de discriminación.

Según las cifras oficiales, la población colombiana en Antofagasta se ha duplicado en los últimos dos años, llegando a promediar un 5 % de los habitantes de la ciudad nortina. Los motivos para migrar son diversos: la violencia, la economía, el sueño chileno con sus falsas expectativas sobre la economía del “jaguar”, que más parece una campaña para salvaguardar un sistema neoliberal feroz, que una real probabilidad de proyección.

To make it, she appropriated a Google image of displaced people. It is impossible to remain indifferent to said image, in which adults confidently carry their bags full of memories and clothes, including the image of the virgin as a sign of protection, albeit one that is only capable of carrying the everyday faith of survival.

The photographs published here and the texts extracted from multiple interviews conducted by Ochoa submerge us in a harrowing human story of immigration, in a global context that predicts more harassment, control and surveillance, while in our southern region, walls of discrimination prevail.

According to official figures the Colombian population in Antofagasta has doubled over the last two years, averaging on 5% of the population of this northern city. Mar y sol también son razones, pero nadie comenta que entre el paraíso de facebook y la imagen país están los cerros yermos y el paisaje baldío, territorio que muta a diario con el enriquecimiento de los colores, la música, la plasticidad corpórea, la comida, el lenguaje y la cultura de quienes enriquecen nuestras vidas.

Aquello nos hace evidenciar lo latinoamericanos que somos, algo que en estas latitudes quisimos por décadas omitir. Aquellos que buscan nuevos horizontes nos permiten volver a hablar de pertenencia y terruño.

Estamos instalados en un momento relevante de nuestro devenir latino, en el cual debemos pensar la construcción histórica, simbólica y política sobre nuestras independencias, sobre la escenificación del mestizaje, tanto desde la violencia con la cual nos edificamos y las creencias que nos fueron impuestas, para poder mirar a través de nuestras propias cosmovisiones. Esta publicación contribuye a reflexionar acerca de un nuevo escenario cargado de políticas y poéticas del cuerpo, la memoria y el futuro de nuestros países.

The beach and the sun are reasons too, but nobody comments that there are barren hills and a fallow landscape in between the Facebook paradise and the country image; a territory mutating on a daily basis with the richness of colors, music, physical plasticity, food, language and culture of those uplifting our lives. That makes us evidence how Latin American we are, something that we tried to omit for decades. Those seeking new horizons allow us to again speak of belonging and homeland.

We are at a relevant moment of our Latin development, in which we have to think of the historical, symbolic and political construction of our independences, the staging of miscegenation, both from the violence with which we edify ourselves and the beliefs that were imposed on us, in order to be able to look through our own world views. This publication makes a contribution towards reflecting on a new scenario charged with policies and poetics of the body, memory and the future of our countries.

There are people who swindle you or trick you to rob the few things you have.

If you are not sharp you lose, they will take your very soul to cross the border.

Uno extraña mucho, no tengo mi mamá acá, no la tengo cerca.

Más cuando llegan las fechas especiales, hace ya dos años que no los veo.

Espero poder traerla para navidad y el año nuevo, somos cinco hermanos y cuatro estamos en Chile.

One misses a lot, I do not have my mother here, I do not have her near me.

I miss her even more when the special holidays arrive; I have not seen my family for already two years.

I hope to bring her over for Christmas and New Year’s.

We are five brothers and four of us are in Chile.

No estoy pensando en volver a Colombia, mi país es muy lindo, pero en estos momenticos está muy pesado, no por la violencia, si no que por las economías.

Uno debe estar donde está bien su familia.

I am not thinking in going back to Colombia.

My country is very beautiful, but things are heavy right now, not because of violence, but of the economies.

One has to be where one’s family is well

Hemos sobrevivido trabajando ilegalmente, vendiendo papas rellenas, jugos, frutos, inventรกndola de cualquier manera.

Pero ese no es el chiste.

We have survived by working illegally, selling stuffed potatoes, juice, fruit, trying to make it in any way possible.

But that is no the idea.

Chile va a hacer un vuelco maravilloso en unos años más, van a ver chilenas morenas hablando chileno y esas niñas, que tendrán una piel espectacular y su pelo crespo, dirán que son chilenas, no colombianas, ni ecuatorianas, ni haitianas...

Cuando eso pase, se disparará todo.

Entiendan que hay gente que ha venido a hacer cosas buenas.

De aquí a unos años más se verán políticos o políticas inmigrantes.

Chile will take a wonderful 180-degree turn in a few more years.

There will be more dark skinned girls speaking Chilean, and those girls, who will have spectacular skin and their curly hair, will say they are Chileans, not Colombians or Ecuadorians or Haitians.

When that happens, things will go off.

You have to understand that some people came here to do good things.

In a few years time you will see immigrant male and female politicians.

Mientras tanto tengo que tener permiso de la policia para salir.

Tengo que pedir favores. ¡Qué cosa es esa!

Yo en tiempos lejanos.

De Chile se habla muy poco en Colombia.

El panorama que te muestran los que vienen primero es como si fuera la octava maravilla y eso lo motiva a uno.

El mar y la playa.

Chile is not very much talked about in Colombia.

The panorama the people who got here first show you is as if it was the eighth wonder of the world, and that motivates you.

Vienes con una mentalidad del facebook y esperas encontrar una ciudad mejor. ...

Cuando entras y ves las casitas dices: me jodieron.

Antofagasta is not the city you expect.

You arrive with a Facebook mentality and hope to find a better city. ...

When you enter and see the shanty houses, you say: “I was screwed over�.

Man is an animal of habits and once you are here things get better.

There are good and bad things everywhere in the world.

Yo solo conocía la dictadura chilena, a la reina Boloco y el Festival de Viña.

El ambiente bohemio me encantó en Santiago.

Las casonas grandes, donde hacen grafitis y la poesía.

Pero me vine a Antofagasta porque me salió un trabajo y me quedé, pues el colectivo era barato y todo era más cerca.

También por el clima y la playa.

I only knew of the Chilean dictatorship, queen Bolocco and the Festival de ViĂąa.

I loved the bohemian scene in Santiago; the big houses, where people make graffiti or poetry.

But I came to Antofagasta because I got a job and stayed, since public transport is cheap and everything is closer.

Also because of the weather and the beach.

Mi hijo va a ser futbolista y va a ser profesional.

Aunque no le gusta entrenar, le gusta jugar.

My son will be a soccer player and he is going to be a pro.

He does not like training, but he likes playing.

Como se dice: blanco corriendo atleta, negro corriendo ratero.

Allá, en Colombia, también hay discriminación.

As you say: white man running, athlete; black man running, thief.

There is discrimination in Colombia too.

Nos vinimos por la delincuencia, muchas personas malas.

O te cobran un impuesto o te pegan un tiro, solo por verte caer.

Por un portĂĄtil, una cabeza.

We came here because of crime; there are many bad people.

They either charge you a tax or shot you, just to see you fall.

For a cellphone, you get someone’s head.

Soy catĂłlico 100%, pero acĂĄ no voy a la iglesia.

Hice mi propio templo y manejo mi propia energĂ­a.

Estoy en paz con dios.

I am 100% catholic, but I do not go to church here; I made my own temple and manage my own energy.

I am at peace with god.

No te lo demuestran de frente, pero sientes la intimidación.

Cuando te subes a una liebre, el único puesto que queda vacío es el que está al lado tuyo y uno piensa: esta gente es rara.

They will not openly show it to you, but you feel discrimination.

When you get on a bus, the only seat not taken is the one next to you and you think: “these people are weird�.

Naces en Colombia y te dicen, tú no te frustres, mejor vive con la rumba, el aguardiente, la fiesta.

El colombiano sufre, llora, pero tiene que celebrar para seguir; pasamos la pena con un sancocho, sino la vida sería terrible.

You are born in Colombia and they tell you, “don’t get frustrated, it’s better to live life as a party, drinking homemade liquor, partying.

Colombians suffer, cry, but have to celebrate in order to continue living; we pass the hard times with homemade sancocho soup, life would be terrible without it.

Las tomas en Colombia son más revolucionarias, más conflictivas llegan de todos los gremios.

Cuando llegué y alguien me dijo que fuera a una toma, le dije ¡no! En la toma hay prostitución, delincuencia y drogas, gente de mal vivir.

La necesidad te obliga a veces.

Pero es aquí donde hemos podido armar nuestra casa y estar tranquilos con los vecinos.

Ahora es nuestro hogar.

Shantytowns in Colombia are more revolutionary, more conflictive; People from all walks of life arrive there.

When I arrived and somebody told me to go to a shantytown, I said: “No! There is prostitution, crime and drugs there, bad people�.

Need forces you to do things sometimes.

But it is here where we have been able to set up our own house and be in peace with the neighbors.

This is our home now.

Mi sueño es tener un negocio, uno bueno de verduras o un restaurante para los niños.

No quiero siempre andar corriendo, de aquí para allá.

My dream is to have a business, a good fruit stand or a kids’ restaurant.

I do not want to be running back and forth for ever.

Nuestra gente todo lo ilumina para las fiestas, en nuestro paĂ­s.

People put up lights on everything for the holidays in our country.

Ahora los negros están desatados en Colombia por las teleseries, que la están pegando.

Están en HD, acá en Chile no, pero allá hay modelos, cantantes, actrices de moda.

Es curioso pero es cierto. Los negros están en boom.

Todo con la salsa choque y la televisión, la selección de Colombia y una generación llena de negros.

Black people are out of control in Colombia right now because of soap operas, which are really popular.

They show them in HD, but not in Chile; but over there, there are fashionable singers, actresses; curious, but true.

Black people are experiencing a boom.

Everything is salsa choque music and television, the Colombian national soccer team and a generation crowded with black people.

Me encanta Chile, pero extraño la tierra de allá.

Aunque en veinte años más Antofagasta va a ser como el Caribe.

Las cosas van a cambiar. Es cuestión de tiempo.

I love Chile, but I miss home.

But in twenty years, Antofagasta will be like the Caribbean.

Things will change. It is a matter of time.
