GEORGIA FIENNES

Georgia Fiennes (b. 1979, London) is a British painter known for her evocative depictions of flora and fauna in unexpected contexts. Her work blends familiarity with subtle surrealism.
Influenced from an early age by the literary playfulness of Edward Lear and Lewis Carroll, and the visual charm of Beatrix Potter and Michael Sowa, Fiennes creates worlds in which animals harmoniously coexist with recognisable realities—even when removed from their natural habitats. With a background in Fine Art and Illustration, her work is shaped by a strong foundation in narrative and expressive design. Her inspiration is richly layered, drawn from a wide range of visual sources including antique textiles and botanical prints, timeless interiors, her beautiful rural landscape, and the places she has visited on her extensive travels. These experiences continue to add new perspectives and atmospheres to her evolving body of work.
Fiennes paints alla prima, working quickly to capture a spontaneous energy while maintaining a clear compositional intent. Her distinctive palettes and soft brushwork lend warmth and immediacy to her paintings. Her subjects often appear to respond subconsciously to their environment, captured in intimate moments of contemplation, which imbues the works with subtle emotional resonance. Her paintings open up nostalgic, personal moments that invite a sense of connection. She has a particular affection for cows, drawn to their personality and strong presence. Flowers also feature frequently in her work, reflecting a growing connection to her garden and the passing seasons. For Fiennes, painting is not just a practice but a way of life; time away from the studio often brings a sense of restlessness, as she finds so much discovery and resolution happen during the act of creation itself.
The Whole Shebang, her latest solo exhibition, reflects the full range of her imaginative scope. While an initial focus on water—an enduring presence in her life—guided the early stages of the series, the body of work developed in varying directions. Maintaining a singular theme proved an insurmountable challenge in the face of so many compelling tangents. Yet throughout, one thread remains: a search for peace in unpredictability, a sense of contented displacement.
Georgia lives in Hampshire with her husband and two daughters. Her paintings hang in collections around the world. This is her second solo show with Cricket Fine Art.
