JEMMA POWELL

Be it fast or still, Powell absorbs the lifeforce of the world around her to equivalate the sensation of being in paint. Whether it is the metamorphosis of a pulsating city at night, the bustle of a busy harbour, the searing heat of the Italian sunor the lush and verdant English countryside, Jemma Powell’s fascination with the world and its energetic relationships is what pours onto her canvas. Through her painting Jemma creates a dialogue with the viewer – inviting us to see and feel as she does – and to celebrate the physical world we exist in. Painting is an act of both observation and transformation for Powell. It is the flow of life that is Powell’s true subject, the essence of our existence, and this is the real invitation. Through her painting, Powell invites us to join her in observing and feeling, to meditate on the (visual) experience of life, on the beauty around us in the most extraordinary corners of the world, and to build connection. A quiet observer, Powell wears her task lightly, to paint the human experience.

For Jemma painting is indelibly tied to the rhythm of her being, it is second nature. In conversation, Jemma recalls to me how her childhood in West Sussex was very bohemian. Her mother, the artist Lucy Powell, would paint anything she could – as she didn’t carve out space to paint, she painted the house and every corner of the house: hallways, doors, ceilings, furniture and lamps. Her father, also a creative, the product designer Dick Powell, designed the first cordless kettle. Against this backdrop of creativity Jemma also developed a love for nature, and spent much of her childhood outdoors, riding and exploring the countryside.

Now, with her studio next to her kitchen in West Oxfordshire, Jemma Powell has created a situation where all barriers to her practise have been removed, allowing painting as an activity to be centralised in her life – embedded to her core. This set up with the studio two steps away from the spaghetti, is for someone whose work is the flow of life, perfection. Jemma is able to explore, relentlessly, in paint, while balancing her duties as a mother and wife with a young family alongside her own needs. On her travels small bits of canvas are rolled up and stuffed into suitcases, ready to be stretched on return. So embedded is painting into her life, that her work could be read on one level to be a visual diary – a sort of autobiography if you will. To be lucky enough to view a painting by Jemma Powell is to enter a world of lyrical and poetic observations of the metaphysical. These paintings are not mimetic but are formed from deep within the subconscious and communicate in a language whose etymology is formed by brush and gesture. The paintings in this exhibition are physical manifestations of a deep continuous personal dialogue; they are a conversation that we are invited to join. Quite simply, they are ‘words in colour’.
