Fundraising ideas a no-go for council BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Prince Charles Secondary School Grade 12 student. The “stuff” included practical items destined for the orphanage where he lived for his first few months after his natural mother was unable to provide for him. Among those items were 30 quilts donated by local residents.

A proposal by a local citizen to institute a massive fund-raising program to offset construction costs at Creston and District Community Complex (CDCC) got a lukewarm reception at Creston town council Jan. 10 regular meeting. Michael Bunn appeared before council as a delegation to present his proposals (as outlined in Bunn’s letter to the editor in the Jan. 12th Advance), asking for a show of hands of which councillors would volunteer to help. “That’s a little premature,” was Mayor Ron Toyota’s response. Toyota explained that CDCC is operated by the Regional District of Central Kootenay and any proposed activities would have to be approved by the Regional District of Central Kootenay and CDCC. “We are a part of the RDCK, but we don’t operate the facility or make decisions about it,” Toyota said. “I also have concerns about some of the fund-raising ideas,” he added. “We have about 300 organizations in this valley that rely on different events to operate and for some, a major event each year provides most of their operating funds. I don’t want to get into competing with volunteer groups.”

TODAY'S WEATHER

Earlier this winter, when most people turned their thoughts to Christmas, Aaron Gregory put his focus on raising funds and getting donations for Haiti, which is still recovering from a devastating earthquake nearly two years ago.

Aaron and his mother, Mary, were planning their second trip in two years to the Port-au-Prince area, from where he was adopted as an infant. This trip would have a different focus, though. Their first trip came before the earthquake and they didn’t want to go empty-handed. “We took three suitcases filled with donated items, and loaded our own suitcases with more stuff,” said Aaron, a

Gregory returning to Haiti in two years From page 1 In November, when Aaron and Mary were collecting items for the trip, they also accepted financial donations to pay the costs for the additional luggage that would accompany them on the flight. But Aaron smooth-talked an airline employee into putting the suitcases on the plane for free. “He did a great job of explaining what they were for,” Mary said. “The employee called for a manager to make the decision but eventually she made the decision herself. Later a manager called down and said OK, but that this was a one-time deal.” “Maybe we will have to fly on a different airline next time,” Aaron chuckled. Aaron and Mary made their November trip as part of a 19-member tour conducted by Dillon International, an adoption services agency. Their destination was the Foundation for Children of Haiti, where Gladys Thomas, whom they met on their 2009 trip, operates an orphanage, schools, a nursery and a hospital. “We stayed at the foundation’s guest house for five days, then spent two nights in my birth town,” Aaron said. “We visited the hospital and Hope Home (for mentally challenged children) and played with the kids for a few days.” His impression of post-earthquake Haiti differs from recent media reports that decry the lack of progress in rebuilding the country. “There is lots of rubble and tent cities, but there is also lots of rebuilding going on,” he said. “Actually, I was really impressed — there is a new entrance and addition to the airport, and building is going on everywhere. People are starting to move into new buildings from their tents.” Mary agreed with the assessment. “The media is focused on there being so many people who are displaced,” she said. “Two years ago we were amazed at the statues in the Port-au-Prince city square. Now they are standing in the midst of a tent city. But we have to remember the people are making bricks by hand — everything that is rebuilt is done with manual labour.” “I don’t think it is going too slow,” Aaron said. “You can’t just finish such a huge project in a day.” Mary said the amount of traffic was “incredible”, much of it the result of so many volunteers and non-governmental organization personnel who are in Haiti to help with construction and aid.

Creston Valley Radio

“One of the downsides (to the presence of so many foreigners) is that it has increased rental prices,” she said. The pair pointed out a noticeable irony in their visit to the orphanage where Mary first met the baby who would become her second son (her first, Ebby, was adopted at the age of three). “The kids at Haiti Home for Children have it pretty nice compared to children elsewhere in the country,” Mary said. “They have clothing, food and toys and are really well cared for.” “They are pretty privileged,” Aaron agreed. Many of those children, Mary said, were rescued from poor hospital conditions by the energetic and very persuasive Gladys Thomas, a Haitian nurse who has become the driving force behind the Foundation for Children of Haiti. “The facilities now form a village on a beautiful spot,” Mary said. “The school now has 120 kids from kindergarten to Grade 4.” A new school is now in the fundraising stage and it will take $400,000 to complete it. It is that fund-raising effort that Aaron directed the $1,200 raised in Creston that he carried to Haiti. Energized by his November experience and committed to helping a country that he feels a close connection with, Aaron said he will continue to help raise funds and work toward a career in international development and aid. A benefit concert by the House of Rock is planned for February and Aaron will set up a display about his trip and take donations. In the spring, a PCSS teacher plans to hold a soccer tournament, with net proceeds going toward the new school project. “Each time I go back to Haiti, I come home with a better understanding of what I want to do with my life,” Aaron said. He plans another trip in two years, when a reunion of adoptees is planned. After graduation he plans to work to save money, then move to Montreal to become fluent in French, the primary language of Haiti. Adopting a child from a developing nation isn’t without its controversies, Mary admitted. The practice is looked upon by some as taking away the future of a country. “But on this trip we saw so many young adoptees who, like Aaron, are going back to help out. What would Aaron’s life have been like if he had grown up as an orphan?”

Jesse Gartland is the only Creston native currently playing for the Creston Valley Thunder Cats. Brian Lawrence photo

Teen playing for hometown BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

Jesse Gartland isn’t the first local teen to hit the ice as one of the Creston Valley Thunder Cats, but he’s the only one this season. And the 17-year-old couldn’t be happier. “It’s the best feeling to come out on the ice knowing most of the people cheering in the stands,” he said. “And being able to skate on the same ice as my dad is a good feeling.” The six-foot-two, 190-pound defenceman, who tried out for the Thunder Cats for the first time this year, enjoys “the thrill of playing”, and although he doesn’t get many scoring opportunities in his position, has earned 12 points (two goals and 10 assists) in 34 games. Three of those points came on Dec. 3, when the Thunder Cats defeated the Kamloops Storm

— the top team in the Doug Birks Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League — 6-2 at the John Bucyk Arena. His three assists in that game also earned him the position of the game’s third star. “I had lots of family in the stands, so that was kind of special,” Gartland said. Playing junior B hockey is a logical progression for the Creston Valley native, who first skated when he was four or five. “The typical Canadian thing for a kid to do is strap on the skates early,” he said. And for teens who love to play hockey as much as he does, trying out for the Thunder Cats is the thing to do. “I’d definitely recommend it,” he said. “Brent [Heaven, head coach,] is really good. He’s a great coach, and treats us better than we ever asked.”

Renovation costs may be covered wtihout tax increase From page 1 Coun. Tanya Ducharme echoed Toyota’s concerns, applauding Bunn’s initiative but cautioning him against eroding the ability of volunteer organizations to raise funds for activities. Toyota added that the RDCK is committed to exploring ways of addressing the additional renovation costs at CDCC without adding to taxation levels for the service in its 2012-2013 budget. Later in the meeting, councillors voted to receive Bunn’s presentation for information. The upward trend toward accidental and unexplained 911 calls, primarily from cellphones, is continuing in 2012, Creston RCMP Const. Dan Cameron said on Monday. He reported a number of calls to the emergency number that tied up police resources while they tried to trace their source, none of which indicated a crisis.

Skating championships start Friday Conclusion of BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The John Bucyk Arena will be well used this weekend, when 140 skaters take part in the Kootenay Regional Figure Skating Championships. The three-day event, which runs from Friday though Sunday, features members of 13 clubs from throughout the Kootenays, and includes 12 Creston skaters, a few of whom will be competing for the first time. “I’ve encouraged the local skaters to enter as many events as possible to take advantage of being able to skate on home ice,” said Creston Valley Figure Skating Club coach Cassie Bloy.

The competition will run over three days, starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m., then running 8 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday. At a time of year when figure skating fans have plenty of opportunities to watch Canadian and international stars competing and performing, it’s important to reflect on the impact that regional events like this have on future stars. “Canada’s top skaters didn’t just wake up one morning knowing how to skate — they had to learn their twizzles and triples somewhere,” said Bloy. “Chances are, their skating careers started in community arenas like ours.” The competition is open to the public and free of charge.

There will be a boutique where fans can buy flowers and gifts to show support for the skaters. “All the skaters have

Third quarter busier for RCMP BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Creston RCMP members were marginally busier from October through December than they were in the same period in 2010, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan told Creston town council at the Jan. 10 regular meeting. Gollan said his members responded to 858 calls for service, 50 more than the previous third quarter of the RCMP fiscal year, which ends on March 31. He has responded to requests from local Regional District of Central Kootenay directors by breaking his detachment’s statistics into Creston and rural calls, which indicate about 60 per cent of calls originate in town. Of particular concern, he said, is the number of false alarms and abandoned 911 calls police officers must respond to.

“These really eat into our efforts, taking away time that would be spent on other work in the community,” he said. “The number of 911 calls from cellphones, either dialled accidentally or that result from phone problems, has risen dramatically. But we are required to respond to each and it can take a member a couple of hours to determine that there was no emergency.” While the Creston detachment includes 13 RCMP members, there have been only 11 on the job recently due to members transferring out. One replacement will be arriving from northern B.C. this month and a trainee will start on the job in February. The trainee will be required to work closely with another member for up to five months before he or she can patrol and respond to calls independently, Gollan said.

From page 4 January 15 •When a patrol officer observed a driver making an illegal turn in a vehicle without a headlight on Valleyview Drive, he stopped the vehicle and found the driver had been consuming alcohol. The driver got a 24-hour driving prohibition and a ticket for making the illegal turn. •A tenant complained that a landlord was doing his laundry and planning to bathe at his residence. The landlord said he had issued the appropriate visitation notice and was conducting checks on the property’s plumbing system. Police concluded this is a civil dispute.

In the third quarter, robberies increased, as did arson, but sexual assaults were down considerably from the previous year, he said. While motor vehicle thefts were up, thefts under $5,000 nearly doubled, many of which can be attributed to thefts from unlocked vehicles. Incidents of property damage dropped, as were liquor offences and non-injury motor vehicle accidents. Gollan said he has continued the practice of requiring members to keep a close eye on offenders who are released from jail with conditions. “If they have a curfew imposed we will visit their homes to make sure they are there when they are supposed to be,” he said. “If they aren’t home, we recommend charges. That is how we caught a repeat violent offender late last year. He is now serving another 14-month jail sentence.”

Gollan invited town council to give him a short list of priorities to consider as he works to create his 2012-2013 operational plan. “You all hear of issues within the community,” he said. “I want to make sure we are responding to the concerns of your constituents.”

I’ve been reading the memoir of singer Jann Arden and thinking once again about how different the world is for children now. It’s sad. I think that we have created communities and lifestyles that don’t provide kids with the same opportunities we had to socialize, learn to play and have a measure of independence. Arden’s life has many parallels to my own, which is probably why Falling Backwards has hit home with me. She is eight years younger and grew up on an acreage in Springbank, just west of Calgary, after her parents sold their house in the southwest part of the city. But we both had tons of freedom to go out and explore and play with our friends. My sisters and I were raised in a house in a distinctly working class neighborhood. Like Arden, our mother was the glue that held the family together, while our fathers both struggled with the pressures of being the main financial providers. Arden and I shared a fascination with gophers (though being in a rural area, her friends had the advantage of air rifles) and of the thoughtless torture we put the animals through before they were finally killed. I have little doubt that it was those early experiences that left me with a distaste for violence. And, while I have never had a desire to own pets, I have a great aversion to those who mistreat animals. With her two (male) buddies, Arden would head off to swim in

the Killarney swimming pool as a pre-teen. The kids would pack up some snacks and take about three hours to make the several-mile walk into the city, occasionally tacking on

city map and rode our bikes across the city to the aquarium, which was located in a brewery, of all places. We made regular stops to pick up Sporstman cigarette packages because we collected the seemingly endless selection of fishing flies that were depicted on the back of each pack. What are the chances today that children today share similar experiences, I wonder. Maybe I’ll be able to eventually do two or more laps without stopping. Either way, we know it is benefiting our health, which just happens to be the whole purpose of the community complex. We’ll keep you posted on our progress. Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

Gov’t must pay price

To the Editor: Thanks to climate change, the North Pole is melting and Santa needs to relocate. For that reason, we bought Christmas gifts for friends and relatives to help Santa and the reindeer pack up the sleigh and set up shop elsewhere in Canada. The proceeds from our purchase will used by the David Suzuki Foundation to tackle climate change and decrease carbon emissions by Canadians and hopefully educate the Harper government. Thank you, Mr. Harper, and your government for the wonderful Christmas present; you have done it again. The Earth cannot afford any more of these great gifts. This time, you are not only hurting Canada, but the nearly one billion people who struggle every day to feed their families because of increasingly frequent severe droughts, floods, heat waves and storms. It seems that this government has broken domestic law by withdrawing from the international climate change accord. The Kyoto Protocol Implementation Act has royal assent. This international treaty was ratified by the House of Commons, and is now withdrawn with no discussion in the House. How many more times will this government use its dictatorial power against the will of the majority? How much longer will the people of Canada put up with this abuse of democracy? Maybe we would have a different government if more people had voted. Now we have a majority government using its power, even though 60 per cent of Canadians did not vote for the Conservatives, a government that is not willing to listen to the

wishes of the people; it finds it more important to make its friends in the fossil fuel industry happy. I am angry and ashamed of our leaders. Do we need a Canadian revolution? If not, then we have to make sure that the Harper government pays a high political price. We also need to change our outdated electoral system. It can’t be business as usual. We have our work cut out for us. Let’s get going for the sake of our children and future generations, and for all who live on our planet. Henry Dahle Creston

Impressed by generosity To the Editor: The people of Creston and the surrounding area are incredibly generous. My wife, Corinne, and I moved here in late July from northeastern Alberta. In November, I started to work as one of the many volunteers at New Life Furniture. The store is stocked solely by donations of used furniture, appliances and electronics from local citizens. All proceeds go directly to several great charitable causes. These include shelters from abuse, youth and child care programs, a crisis line and many more. But what is truly amazing are the quantity and quality of the donations. All of the items given are in good condition and some are almost new and in excellent condition. Also, the selection is continually changing as new donations come in. The individuals and families who are helped by the funds raised do not have the opportunity to thank their benefactors directly. I would like to take the lib-

erty, on their behalf, to express their gratitude. The sofas, stoves and whatevers you gave will make a big difference in many people’s lives. Corinne and I feel very fortunate and blessed to have moved into a community where there are so many good and caring people. Ed Melendez-Duke Creston

Transparency is needed To the Editor: (Re: “Auditor will find conflicts,” page 7, Jan. 5 Advance) Rhonda Barter’s recent letter to the Advance alleges some collusion regarding town council dealings and local businesses. This could all be put to rest very effectively if the following two conditions were enacted: •All councillors publish an itemized account of all election expenses and sources of income to meet these expenses. This would indicate any possible influence or future favouritism; and •All councillors publish a statement of any business conducted relating to city spending or resulting from any council decisions. This would indicate any possible conflict of interest or any council member benefiting from a council decision or city financial dealing. Such an action in a clear and transparent matter would put any lingering doubts to rest. I hope this will be done to allay any misapprehensions. After all, “Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion.” All the best in 2012! Larry A. Ewashen Creston

Library shelves need annual weeding

One of the most difficult tasks I regularly face is weeding the collection. Well, maybe I should say one of the difficult tasks I try to avoid. The number of library items weeded needs to be approximately the same as the number of items added to the collection. We have reached critical mass on library space. On an average year, we might add 1,000 items, which means there has to be room enough to put them on a shelf. There are some anomalies to the general principal, the latest being the inclusion of e-books into the collection, they require no physical space. We also no longer purchase videos but have increased our DVD collection substantially. There are completely differing space requirements between the two formats; however, the videos remain popular and not many have been weeded. There are also basic and professional criteria for weeding and each library is somewhat different in how it chooses the material. As a professional librarian, my own choices for reading or viewing material get no special considerations and I adhere to policy established by the board. If I were picking and choosing material using my own standards as criteria, I would completely eliminate material in the children’s area that exist only as marketing tool for a much broader range of “products”. The basic guide to weeding involves checking statistics: how many times the item has been loaned out, when it last left the library and how many of those loans were interlibrary. Another major consideration is the condition of the

item. Children’s books, especially, are subject to a lot of wear and tear, and often display evidence of snacks eaten while looking at the books. DVDs are easily scratched and ruined; paperbacks

@ Your Library Ann Day have far less time on our shelves than hardcover books and CD cases fall apart too easily for prolonged library use. In a 2004 column in Wired magazine, Chris Anderson did a column entitled “The Long Tail,” where he gives the example of Jon Krakauer’s book, Into Thin Air, published in 1998. The book became a publishing sensation and as a result, another book published in 1988, called Touching the Void, by a British mountain climber also rose to the top of the sales lists. It sold almost none when it was first published. This “long tail” also pertains to library use, the same thing holds true but on a lesser scale. What I weed from our collection might be needed by another library (the interlibrary loan network has enabled one small library like ours to have access to a massive collection of books) and I have to recognize this potential. If all the libraries weeded out all the books not taken out in the past few years and those with little circulation, what

happens to the classics, to things like the Dorothy Sayers mystery collection first published in the 1920s and brought back by television or to the P.G. Wodehouse books, also first seen in the early 1900s, and only recently re-popularized, much to my delight? We have a current example of how the “long tail” works. One of our patrons has very generously donated to the library the latest P.D. James novel (for the purposes of readers’ advisory, I immediately took it home and am reading it now). James is a British mystery writer of the very highest calibre and this latest book is one she has worked on for years and a deviation from her usual approach to a story. She also loves Jane Austin. Death Comes to Pemberley uses Jane Austin’s Pride and Prejudice as its starting point. The James readers are going to want to re-read Pride and Prejudice or, as in my case, watch the BBC production staring Colin Firth. As anyone can tell you, it is the ultimate in a “chick flick”. Interest in Jane Austin will be revived and other titles and books related to her and her family will pick up readers in libraries everywhere. To end, we have had enough inquiries about downloading e-books into new e-readers that we have decided to put our tech person to work and offer a tutorial for any interested patrons at 1 p.m. Jan. 21. Bring along your e-reader, tablet or what ever device you are using to download e-books or audiobooks. There is no cost for the course. Ann Day is the chief librarian at the Creston and District Public Library.

A lot for seniors to do

Visiting the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors is like an adventure. When you walk in the door, you feel the love and energy that lives there. There are hugs for everyone. The welcome mat is out, and you do feel welcome. You feel warm all over from the wonderful atmosphere that greets you.

The Voice of

Experience Marleyne Krell Everyone is busy getting themselves settled at the tables all set for lunch. The mouth tingling smells from the kitchen fill the air. For those who are mobile stand in line at the buffet where the so good food is served. The ones that are less mobile have their meals brought to them. Everyone is in a happy mood. The sense of camaraderie is in the air — the talking, and sharing of their day — and it warms the heart to hear the folks enjoying their day at TAPS. After lunch, some of the seniors volunteer to help clear the tables, and the events of the day begin. I asked the folks what they thought of TAPS, the programs, food, games — anything they could tell me. I felt honoured that everyone that I talked to shared their thoughts with me. I was able to interview quite a few though not all. Here are some of the things they like to do: Tai Chi, yoga, swimming, walking, gardening, crafts, knitting, ceramics, outings, puzzles, games, book club and visiting.

There are new programs coming in the future. There is something for everyone. Some like to help in the kitchen making perogies, peeling apples and making pies — anything to help and feel useful. Norman will sharpen the knives they use in the kitchen, and he says being at TAPS keeps him out of trouble. Jack, Ray and George think everything is excellent, love to play cribbage and sing. Some of the ladies fix up dolls or knit squares for afghans. Some play the piano for the sing-a-long. Peggy, May, Alice, Marie, Lynette, Mary, Betty, Marion, Verna, Della, Marie O., Sally, Leonora, Helen, Kate, Jean, Jean Mc., Anne, Stephanie, George, Jack, Norman, Ray, the staff and volunteers all agree they get the best tasting food and snacks. I can attest to that. Everyone loves the staff and they love the seniors in return. They are just like our own grandmas and grandpas. Here is a poem written by one of our seniors, Della Senft, just for you readers: Well did you know — Mexico Could be right in Canada? Creston, B.C., is the spot TAPS retirement centre, enjoyed a whole lot Every kind of entertainment, included a big healthy meal, Lot of friends, hugs, smiles, that is what TAPS is, what a deal, Picnic and hikes, handiwork and games Giving and getting, that's the aim Guests arrive with music or gifts We all help, which gives us a lift When it's time to go home, we sit and snack, We've had a great day — we all agree to that! A new perspective

A New Year’s resolution is a commitment that one makes to start a project, change a behavior or accomplish a goal. We generally plan to follow this wonderful new behavior for the whole year. We think of this lifestyle change as advantageous. Because it is Terry Nowak January, I had been thinking about this ritual and it just did not seem to have much attraction for me this year. I took the question, “Do you make New Year’s resolutions?” to those whose opinions I respect the most, the seniors at the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors. Their answers and perspective were more food for thought, even though many said that they had once made resolutions but did not anymore. One person said that her schoolteacher insisted that they make and keep a resolution, perhaps to make the teacher’s job easier. Many stated that resolutions often included the goal to “behave yourself”. No wonder they don’t make resolutions anymore! Other reasons why these seniors do not make resolutions were: “I can’t keep it anyway, never did,” “I forgot it,” “I don’t know what I want to change,” and, “I used to but I’ll be 85 soon — time to cease and desist!” During this discussion, I observed a

calmness in the group, a gracefulness that held no expectation and no anxiety, but rather an acceptance of what is to come. Thinking more about this led me to assess this aura of graceful aging, what it means and how much of it I observe each time I am at TAPS. They seem to accept the inevitable changes of aging, rather than seeing them as looming doom. They are much more concerned with the health and well-being of those around them than with their own ailments. They don’t focus on what is not working anymore but rather what is. They accept that their lives are not the same as they used to be but enjoy the memories of winters in Yuma, the jobs they held or the friends they loved. “Part of aging gracefully is to continue to find things that are important to you,” said Illinois psychologist Mark Frazier. TAPS is an important element for our seniors who are aging well. Our focus at TAPS, besides the excellent hot meals, is to give seniors a purpose, to keep them as active, participating members of their community. Some of our participants have specific jobs that keep the program running smoothly — Stuart is in charge of tea and coffee service, Christy is Bridget’s office assistant, Margaret records the history of members and Virginia manages our library. TAPS continues to be busy with all our regular activities plus new programs. We will start learning how to use the tablets purchased with funds from the Creston and District Credit Union later this month. The generosity of the Telus community action team has allowed us to purchase ukuleles to accompany our choir and lessons with these are starting soon. TAPS is a happy, happening place with members who don’t appear to be aging at all. Who needs New Year’s resolutions? Terry Nowak is an outreach worker with the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors.

Kootenay photos get second showing at Tivoli WILDSIGHT

The Creston Valley Branch of Wildsight has announced its spring 2012 presentation series: On Jan. 23, a repeat performance of Local Colours at the Tivoli will be held. Join local photographers Jim and Howard Smith, Brian Stushnoff, Cheryl Jaggers, Ralph Moore and Raina Messinger for a second showing of Wildsight’s winter slide show. The show begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Tivoli Theatre. Admission is $8. The following presentations begin at 7 p.m. at Rotacrest Hall, with a $6 admission: On Feb. 21, Beaver Tales will be presented by Dr. Glynnis Hood, associate professor at the University of Alberta’s Augustana campus in Camrose, Alta., and author of The Beaver Manifesto. Beavers have an important influence on nature’s ability to withstand drought while providing habitat for many other species. Is it a pesky rodent or water superhero? Hood will discuss her latest research that shows there is much more to beavers than meets the eye. She is to be

Lesley Anderton photo

On April 3, retired Castlegar geology instructor Lesley Anderton will discuss the Orkney Islands as part of the Creston Valley branch of Wildsight’s spring series.

The art of celebrating the new year

I am a pig. You won’t hear me say that often but according to the Chinese Zodiac that’s what I am. When I read about the pig I found out that the one thing we can’t resist is temptation so I obviously couldn’t resist the temptation to do a New Year’s article to follow the artisans of Christmas piece I did last year. When Father Time rings in the new year, it is a time for celebration. Be it watching the ball drop in Time Square or dropping into some frigid waters for a polar bear swim, we all have our ways of ringing in the New Year. My mother was born on Dec. 31, so our family always celebrated my mom’s new year. When I was a teenager I celebrated making a killing by babysitting that night and I actually never went to a New Year’s party until I was in my 30s. New Year’s is also a time of resolutions. We all make them.

Some of us try to quit smoking; others go on diets or exercise. Bigger resolutions include changing jobs, changing locales or just accepting new challenges.

A Cultural Perspective Lori Wikdahl

I’ve resolved to lose weight, quit smoking, exercise and keep working towards a personal goal I’ve been trying to attain for 10 years (sounds more like a glutton for punishment than a pig). In China, celebrations will soon breathe life into the year of the dragon. The Chinese New Year is celebrated in February and has 12 different year phases in its cycle; much like Western astrology’s 12 phases of the zodiac in our cal-

featured on The Nature of Things in the fall of 2012. The Creston Valley branch of Wildsight’s annual general meeting will follow Beaver Tales. Jakob Dulisse, a wildlife biologist and photographer, and John Krebs, a senior wildlife biologist with the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program, from Nelson, will present It’s a Wild Life on March 20. Dulisse and Krebs explore the world of predator-prey relationships and examine the delicate balance between life and death. Stunning photographs depict the diversity of wildlife around the globe including giant salamanders, carnivorous plants, glowing mushrooms, living fossils, as well as species unique to the Columbia Basin. The presentation is sponsored by the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program. On April 3, Orkney Odyssey will be presented by Lesley Anderton, a retired

endar year. The dragon, however, is the exception, actually coming to life on Jan. 23. For us westerners, February is the dead of winter. Most of us spend our time trying to figure out how to beat cabin fever or the winter blahs. Some fly the coop like the birds, looking for the sun in the south, and others try to find a just cause for a celebration. The upcoming February event sponsored by the Community Arts Council of Creston is just what the doctor ordered! Dragons and Artists, a Chinese New Year theme night on from 7-10 p.m. Feb. 18 at Rotacrest Hall, will be a fundraiser for Artwalk. When the doors open for the evening, there will be several, perhaps as many as 10, artists (myself included) of various mediums at work on a piece that will be raffled off at the end of the evening.

geology instructor from Castlegar. Join Anderton on another fascinating trip — this time to the rugged Orkney Islands 10 kilometres north of mainland Scotland. Tens of thousands of seabirds nest on cliffs that overlook a coastline teeming with seals, porpoises, whales, and dolphins. Anderton explores the natural history, archaeology and geology of these interesting islands, which are leading the world in research and development of wind, wave, and tidal energies. Finally, on a date to be announced, Patrick and Baiba Morrow, award-winning photojournalists from Wilmer, will present Mountains: The Sacred and the Profane. Their presentation reflects upon three decades of high adventure, from hidden valleys in the Himalaya to Jumbo Pass in the Purcell Mountains of B.C., relaying a message that we must make every effort to rekindle our once strong connection with nature.

Bruins win one of four

CRESTON VALLEY MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

This weekend was a big one for the Creston bantam Bruins, who hosted their home full body-checking tournament and played four games with teams from Alberta and the U.S.A. Friday night’s game was a barnburner against Okotoks. Creston opened the scoring with a goal from defenseman Kyle Golbeck, assisted by Jayden Gigliotti. Followed by an unassisted goal by Gigliotti, Otto Blackmore scored, assisted by Gigliotti. Then captain Isaac Janzen scored, assisted by new arrival Chris Auger. In the dying minutes, another combo by Otto, assisted by Gigliotti, put the team to within one. Coaches Tony Mulder and Brett Van Rycksenveld pulled goalie Scott Doelman, who

played one of his best games to date, and Creston started a shooting gallery on the Okotoks goalie, with Otto ringing one off the post, with many jam-in tries held off by the Okotoks goalie. The Saturday morning game against Coeur d'Alene was hard-hitting, ending with a 6-3 loss. Goaltender Chris Mulder kept the score low by stopping a few breakaways. Scoring was started by Otto, assisted by Brendan Christianson, then Laredo Blackmore buried one, assisted by Otto and Owen Blackmore. The final goal came from Owen, assisted by Christianson and Golbeck. Saturday afternoon’s game was against the Elk Valley combined team. The game ended 10-3 for the Elk Valley league rivals. The game was intense. Goals were scored by Otto assisted by Golbeck and two goals were recorded by Zack

King, both assisted by Janzen. Some great defence was observed, with big hits from Kristi Blackmore and Abdul Samai getting the large hometown crowd into the game. Sunday’s final game was against Okotoks. Creston started off the game with two quick goals, one by Talon Maatz assisted by Janzen and Samai, and another by Janzen, assisted by King. Then Okotoks scored twice and Creston came back with a goal from Owen assisted by Laredo and Otto, and took the lead with another goal from Owen assisted by defencemen Christianson and Golbeck, but Okotoks came back to tie the game 4-4. After the final buzzer, a shootout followed, with Okotoks getting one past the netminder, not a good way to end, but that’s hockey. See MINOR, page 24 We BuyBIG... You Save BIG!

Caroline Rose Oko (nee Maguire) April 8, 1949 ~ January 6, 2012

After a courageous and determined battle with cancer, Caroline Rose Oko (Carrie) of Erickson passed away peacefully in the Creston Valley Hospital with her sons at her side on Friday January 6, 2012. Carrie passed into the loving arms of her mother Anne, her brother and sister-in-law Linda and Jim Maguire, sister-in-law Joni Maguire, and her father-in-law Peter Oko. Carrie was born on April 8, 1949 in St. Paul, Alberta as the youngest of ve children born to Emmett and Anne Maguire. After completing high school in St. Paul, in 1966 Carrie went on to train as a psychiatric nurse at Alberta Hospital in Edmonton where she graduated in 1970. While in training as a nurse, Carrie met her future husband Garth Oko, son of Peter and Hilda Oko, whom she married in 1969. Carrie worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Alberta Hospital in Edmonton from 1970 until she moved with Garth to the Creston Valley in 1973. Carrie and Garth built a life together in Creston, raising their two sons at their home in the Oko Orchard in Erickson. While Garth tended to the orchard, Carrie worked in her chosen profession at the Creston Valley Hospital, Pioneer Villa, Swan Valley Lodge and Home Support and inuenced the lives of many future caregivers through her teaching of long term care aides at the College of the Rockies. Carrie’s loving kindness to all she met was most evident with all those who received her compassionate care. Carrie loved her family with a passion, especially her sons Chad (Amy) of Vancouver and Kory Oko of Victoria, BC. Her family was made complete with the birth of her grandchildren Caiden, Chantelle and most recently Conner. Carrie’s beautiful blue eyes never shone as brightly as they did when she had her grandchildren in her arms. Carrie is also survived by a large circle of loving family and friends who are left to mourn her passing including her father Emmett Maguire of Creston, mother-inlaw Hilda Oko of Creston, her sister Marlene Billey (Marshall) of Creston, brother Charlie Maguire of West Bank, BC, brother Jack Maguire (Rosemarie) of St. Albert, Alberta, sister-in-law Carolyn Oko of Galliano Island, brother and sister-in-law Kurt and Darlene Oko of Country Harbour, Nova Scotia and nieces and nephews Leanne, Pam, Kelly, Nahanni, Emma, Dean, Shawn and Liam. Carrie was blessed with the gift of a beautiful voice, a gift which she shared with so many, bringing comfort and joy by singing at weddings and funerals throughout the valley. Her voice will surely now be joined with the angels. A Service for Carrie was held on Saturday January 14 at 2:00 p.m. at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, in Creston. Carrie’s family is grateful for the love and support of Carrie’s many close friends in Creston and Alberta during this difcult time. We would like to acknowledge all the friends who were kind enough to bring cake, cookies, lasagne, stew and owers to the house. The family will also be forever appreciative of the compassionate care Carrie received in the Palliative Care Center at the Creston Valley Hospital, where her immediate family from across Canada were able to gather together and be with Carrie during her nal days. In lieu of owers, Carrie’s family would ask that donations be made to the Palliative Care Room at the Creston Valley Hospital or the BC Cancer Society. “She has slipped the surly bonds of earth and touched the face of God” (High Flight – John Magee Jr)

Cats beat Rockies and Grizzlies Minor hockey BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats earned five out of a possible six points this weekend, bringing them closer to the top of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division. The Thunder Cats now have 50 points, 10 behind the second-place Kimberley Dynamiters and 12 behind the Fernie Ghostriders. The Golden Rockets are in fourth with 32, and the Columbia Valley Rockies are a distant last, with seven. The weekend started with an overtime loss to the Castlegar Rebels, in second place in the Neil Murdoch Division. The game that started with a Rebels goal in the first period. Jordan Johnson scored for the Thunder Cats in the second and third periods, and a goal by Tre Potskin tied the score with 2:27 left in regulation time. Just over a minute into overtime, Castlegar’s Tyler Robinson scored the game-winner. “It showed a lot of resilience from our club,” said Thunder Cats head coach Brent Heaven. “We didn’t give up.” The Thunder Cats earned a lopsided

8-4 victory over the Columbia Valley Rockies on Saturday, although fewer pucks should have gotten past goalies Michael Hails and Tyler Moffatt. “We definitely could have played a better defensive game,” Heaven said. “They didn’t bring the same attitude as they do against a top team.” Scott Swiston, Brandon Formosa (two) and Brock Ward scored in the first period, and Johnson and Potskin scored one each in both the second and third. On Sunday, the Thunder Cats edged the Revelstoke Grizzlies. Trevor Hanna scored the first period’s only goal, followed by a shorthanded goal from Ward in the second period. Hanna scored again in the third to pull ahead of the Grizzlies, and Jesse Collins scored the game-winner at 11:04. The Thunder Cats play once this weekend, visiting Fernie on Friday. “When we play top teams, we bring our best effort, and I’m expecting to do that on Friday,” said Heaven. That game is followed by a Tuesday visit to Golden, then a three-game weekend road trip to visit the Grizzlies, North Okanagan Knights and Rockets.

On Sunday, the Mottl twins, Alex and Ashley, celebrated their birthday on the ice in Cranbrook. The game ended with Cranbrook winning by a significant score and Creston with zero. The peewee house team was in Cranbrook on Sunday, playing against Cranbrook Dodge. Creston started the scoring with a strong goal from Alex Blackmore. Cranbrook tied it up quickly, but Creston broke it with only three minutes remaining, with a goal from Justice Samuels Mund. Creston’s first second-period goal was by the “twin towers” defense, scored by Tyson Steed. Vinson Blackmore finished out the period by scoring two unassisted goals. The score after two periods was 5-2 for Creston. An exciting third period started with a goal by Mund, the puck being sent to him from Kenton Blackmore. To end the period and the game with only one second left, Creston snuck one more goal in, unassisted by Alex Blackmore, for a final score of 7-3 for Creston.
