kids to be outside,” added Rob Armstrong, a former Cub with two boys who are now Scouts. His wife, Carrie, who was a Girl Guide, agreed, and noted that she also appreciates the global aspect of Scouting, which she particularly noticed at the summer’s Pacific Jamboree, attended by 3,000 members.

Columbia Brewery employees learned on Monday that they will now be producing Bud Light, the world’s second most popular beer brand (a Chinese beer holds the top spot). And, they were also told, the Labatt brewery in Edmonton will soon be making Kokanee, which until now has only been produced in Creston. The changes are part of a continuing effort to reduce shipping costs and make each Labatt brewery in Canada more efficient and flexible. “Flexibility is at the heart of this expansion — adding another brewery to the Kokanee family will make it easier for us to serve our consumers more efficiently,” Columbia Brewery manager Murray Oswald said on Monday. “And, because of the production flexibility we’ve developed at Creston, there will be no immediate impact on employment at Columbia Brewery and, in fact, one of our objectives is to minimize any impact at all. “We continue to be committed to getting additional brands at the Columbia Brewery to help offset the impact of normal seasonality.”

Five local Scout leaders were recognized for their dedication to the organization on Monday. Carrie Armstrong, Rob Armstrong, Casey Holden, Mel Joy and Atma Persad each received certificates marking five years as leaders. For the four at the presentation — Joy

was unavailable — the recognition was another milestone in a lifetime of association with either Scouts or Girl Guides. Persad, a former Cub with a boy in Scouts, appreciates the organization’s focus on “personal development rather than athleticism or academics.” Most importantly, he said, participants learn that “outside isn’t just something on a screen saver.” “It gives you the opportunity to teach

Singing Creston jewellers turn gold into cash contest starts with voting BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

Turning your unwanted gold jewelry into cash isn’t magic. It is something local jewelers do on a regular basis, Ron Hurry said on Monday. The power will be in the hands of the audience at the Jan. 19 Creston’s Best Singer audition show, which will see up to 30 singers compete for 20 spots in the semifinals. The first 250 audience members through the Prince Charles Theatre doors will receive a scorecard so they can rank their top picks to move on to the Feb. 9 show — and the winner of that will move on to the regional contest in June. “I really wanted to get the audience involved in the decision,” said producer Vern Gorham. “It gives the community a chance to make sure their favourites are in the 20 who will be performing for out-of-town judges next month.” This is the third annual Creston’s Best Singer contest, and the second time he’s held an audition show that has the audience participating. As with last year’s auditions, the winners will be announced on Feb. 1 at www.ilovecreston.com, and in the February issue of I Love Creston. Gorham said that the audition show will feature several new faces, as well as some of last year’s competitors. “It’s great to see that some of the singers, even though they didn’t win, still had fun and want to try it again,” said Gorham. “But they’ll certainly be given a run for their money by newcomers.” Tickets to the Jan. 19 show, which starts at 6:30 p.m., are $8 for adults and $6 for students, seniors and children, available in advance at Black Bear Books and Kingfisher Used Books, or $10 at the door. For more information on the contest series, visit kootenaysbestsinger.com.

gold to buyers that advertise on the Internet,” he said. “The best part is that you can sit down, find out what our offer is, think about it and then say yes or no. … “I have even talked people out of selling some items, or having them repaired. In the end, it’s your choice — you can pick up your jewelry and walk away without a hassle.” Sending away valuables to an unknown business, or dealing with people you don’t know, can be unsettling or even risky, Hurry said. “But I have more than 40 years of experi-

ence in this business and my best advertising is word of mouth — keeping customers happy keeps me in business.” The price paid out is based on the current market price of gold (more than $1,600 an ounce this week), with costs of shipping, processing (Hurry sends the pieces he buys off to Toronto to be melted down) and profit margin factored in. “Come and see a local jeweler if you have pieces you would like to sell,” Hurry said. “If you aren’t happy with our offer, you don’t have to accept it. But you will probably be pleasantly surprised.”

From page 1 “Everywhere you went, there were people in uniforms having fun and challenging themselves,” she said. There are 30 children involved in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in the Creston Valley, and in addition to outdoor skills, they are being taught a sense of community and volunteerism — about half of them helped out packing and distributing Christmas hampers last month. But the outdoor aspect is no less important. “The kids learn life skills they may or may not be taught in school,” said Holden, a former Brownie with two boys in Scouts. “It gives them a chance to be outside in nature. When there’s no roof over your head, you’re free to be who you really are.” The Scouts meet regularly in space provided free of charge by Royal Canadian Legion branch No. 29. Property assessments up slightly over ’11 BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

A flat 2011 real estate market is reflected in property assessment notices sent out to homeowners in last week’s mail. “Assessments in the Kootenay Lake area have changed only modestly from the 2011 assessment roll,” deputy assessor Dennis Hickson said last week from Nelson. “For example, a typical single family home in Creston that was valued at $274,000 for the 2011 assessment roll is valued at $277,000 for the 2012 assessment roll. “In Kaslo, a single family home that was valued at $191,000 for the 2011 assessment roll is valued at $186,000 for 2012.” Hickson said the assessment role for the

Town of Creston increased from $689 million last year to $708 million this year. Rural areas, including the East Shore of Kootenay Lake, increased by $100,000 to $2.2 billion. New construction, subdivision and rezoning in the Kootenay Lake area, which includes Kaslo and area, the East Shore and all of the Creston Valley, added $33.1 million to the total value. Commercial and industrial property owners in Creston and Kaslo will see changes of plus or minus five per cent, Hickson said. “Property owners who feel that their property assessment does not reflect market value as of July 1, 2011, or see incorrect information on their notice should contact our office as indicated on their notice as soon as possible in

PAWS is pleased to announce that the Late Jim McDonald has been chosen as PAWS Volunteer of the Year. Jim went out of his way to avoid the limelight, but he also went out of his way to help PAWS. If something needed building – call Jim. If something needed fixing – call Jim. If something needed moving – call Jim. He always stepped forward. But, perhaps where he shone brightest was with the animals. They loved and trusted him, and he loved them. In the early days, when we still had Topaz dogs on the mountain, it was Jim that delivered food and water to them and helped bring them down, and settle them in kennels he had set up in his own yard. When we had frightened dogs, it was Jim that sat with them, talked to them, calmed them and gained their trust. If a cat was stuck in a tree, Jim climbed up and brought it down. When help was needed for exercise walks and play time, Jim came forward. If a newly adopted pet needed a ride to a new home, Jim gladly provided the transport. Even the cats, which he was allergic to, loved him and sought out his company. These are but some of the reasons why Jim McDonald was our quiet Hero. He is missed. Thank you Jim.

Conclusion of Jan. 5 RCMP news BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

With 150 calls for service from Dec. 19-Jan. 2, there wasnt enough space in the Jan. 5 Advance to publish the complete report. Following is the conclusion of last week’s police news. December 29 •A semi got stuck on icy roads on Highway 3’s Summit Creek bridge. •Another vehicle near the same location went off the road and hit the rock face, sustaining extensive damage. •A collision with a deer on Highway 3 near Yahk resulted in more than $1,000 damage to the vehicle. •A couple who were checking their trapline near Boundary Lake were taken out of the area by helicopter out of concern for the danger of avalanches. •An 11th Avenue resident had no idea how a 911 call was made from the house. •Police were called to a child custody dispute on Canyon-Lister Road. •An intoxicated elderly male was reported to be stuck in a Canyon Street bank’s ATM room, but was gone when police arrived. •A checkstop on Northwest Boulevard resulted in the seizure of a

small amount of marijuana, one violation ticket, one repair notice and two verbal warnings to drivers. December 30 •A vehicle that sped through a checkstop was identified and the owner will receive a ticket for failing to stop. •The vehicle that ran the previously mentioned checkstop was later reported to have been stolen. •A 16th Avenue resident said a 911 call was made accidentally with a new cell phone. •A male reported to be causing a disturbance at the hospital was gone when police arrived. •Police could not locate a dark coloured pickup that was driving erratically on Erickson Road, spraying a pedestrian with rocks. •A new driver was given a verbal warning for not displaying an “N” on the vehicle when he was stopped at a checkstop on Highway 3. •A Beam Road resident complained that someone is trying to “bug” his house. •A small amount of marijuana was seized at the Northwest Boulevard checkstop. •Santa Claus and snowman decorations were stolen from a 20th Avenue South yard, leading police to suspect

Scrooge has been in the area. •Checking an unlocked vehicle on Highway 3 turned out to be productive for thieves, who walked away with a Nokia cellphone, Garmin GPS and Colby MP3 player. •A purple Grand Cherokee was reported to be driven by an underage driver on Pitt Road. •When police responded to a 911 call from 19th Avenue North, they found a male and female had been in an argument. The male began to suffer chest pains and was taken to the hospital. •Four youths reported to be smoking marijuana near the Rec Centre could not be located. •Police maintained patrols in the Bountiful area, where several hundred people gathered out of doors, some apparently because jailed FLDS leader Warren Jeffs had predicted apocalyptic events would occur if he wasn’t released from jail. Police could not find evidence that they had illegally entered the U.S. •A green Kenneth Cole wallet was lost in the Helen Street area.

T-Cats win two of three games BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats started off 2012 by winning their first game of the year, earning a 4-3 win over the Golden Rockets on Jan. 4. “We played a fairly solid game,” said head coach Brent Heaven. “We were sluggish in the second period, but managed to bounce back in the third.” Scott Swiston started the scoring on a power play at 7:47 in the first period, followed by Jesse Collins 21 second later. Collins scored again in the second period, but two Rockets goals followed. Tre Potskin scored the Thunder Cats fourth goal, the gamewinner, at 16:13 in the third period, with the game’s final goal scored by the Rockets on a power play at 3:44. “It was great to get another win in there and start off the new year on the right note,” said Heaven. “We just wanted to keep it simple, keep it basic, not try to do too many fancy things out there.” Things changed a bit on the weekend, when the Thunder Cats hosted the Spokane Braves on Friday and visited the Golden Rockets on Sunday. The Spokane game resulted in a 3-2 overtime win for the

Thunder Cats, despite a slow start. “They came out skating hard, and we came out not really knowing what we wanted from that game,” said Heaven. Darcy Flaherty scored the Thunder Cats’ only goal in the first period, so they were down 2-1 heading into the second. After an intermission pep talk, “we were able to battle back and get ourselves back into the game,” said Heaven. “In the last 40 minutes we completely dominated the game.” Goalie Tyler Moffatt was pulled with two minutes left

in the third period, allowing Jovi Fabbri to tie the score, sending the game into overtime, in which Jessse Collins scored the game-winner. The Thunder Cats visited Golden on Sunday for a game that resulted in a 2-0 loss to the fourth-place team in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division. “We definitely outplayed them but didn’t have any real drive,” said Heaven. “We were just out for a Sunday skate.” The Thunder Cats outshot the Rockets 37-13, but their goaltender, Cole Henson, was “phenomenal,” said Heaven. Golden’s two goals

were scored at 19:30 and 2:13 in the second period. Heaven noted that competing in the 1 p.m. game time after the long trip to Golden was difficult, so the loss was, perhaps, understandable. “At the same time, we’ve got to build for playoffs,” he said. “What we do this week will determine if that’s a big factor or just a hiccup.” The Thunder Cats now have a 13-point lead on the Rockets, who hold fourth place in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division. The division is led by the Fernie Ghostriders, with 58 points, and they are followed by the Kimberley Dynamiters, with 56. This weekend, the Thunder Cats visit the Castlegar Rebels on Friday, then host the Columbia Valley Rockies on Saturday and the Revelstoke Grizzlies on Sunday. The Rockies are at the bottom of the Eddie Mountain Division with five points (one from an overtime loss), while Rebels, with 57 points, are in second place in the Neil Murdoch Division, and the Grizzlies are in second in the Doug Birks Division, with 54. “It will be a good challenge for us to see how we match up against some of the top teams in other divisions,” Heaven said.

Brewery lines include Keith’s, Labatt

From page 1 While there is obviously a local emotional attachment to the Kokanee brand, beer consumers will remember that only two years ago Creston became the first brewery outside of Halifax to produce another iconic Canadian brand, Alexander Keith’s. Subsequently, the local brewery has also added Keith’s Red, Busch and Brava to its production capabilities. Columbia Brewery, which began brewing Kokanee lager in 1960, became part of the Labatt company in 1974. Initially, Columbia primarily brewed Kokanee but the brand portfolio grew over the years, as Labatt Genuine Lager, Wildcat Strong, Winchester, Labatt Light,

Lucky and Blue were added to the Kokanee family, which includes Kokanee, Kokanee Gold, Kokanee Light and Kootenay True Ale. Arduous standards must be met before a brewery can start production of a beer that has been traditionally made elsewhere. Creston brewmaster Scott Stokes, who oversaw Columbia Brewery’s certification to make Alexander Keith’s, has now added the famed Bud Light brand to his portfolio. And his work is far from over. He will be working closely with former Creston brewmaster Graham Kendall, who now oversees production in Edmonton, to supervise the Alberta brewery’s certification to make Kokanee.

NEW YEAR!

“Today, while we are very proud of our heritage as the birthplace of Kokanee, we’re just as proud that Creston is capable of brewing multiple brands,” Oswald said. “The growth in our production portfolio over the past few years is really a testament to the adaptability and capabilities of our employees. “Kokanee continues to be a priority brand in Western Canada and our investment plans for 2012, as well as the expansion, reflect its importance in our brand portfolio.”

Have you ever wondered why people who don’t know what the purpose of the apostrophe is are the very ones who use it most? Or why, when someone is sitting at a computer keyboard, he or she simply refuses to look up the spelling or meaning of a word, and chooses to take a wild guess? Maybe it’s simply because this is a very confusing language with which we attempt to communicate. Instead of going on a rant (or making a snarky comment as I did with a Facebook poster who thinks that one fedora plus one fedora equals two fedora’s). I present a modern version of a poem called The Chaos, originally attributed to Gerard Nolst Trenite. I find it very amusing. Dearest creature in creation, Study English pronunciation. Ideas will help pay RDCK debt

To The Editor: On Nov. 3, the Regional District of Central Kootenay directors had a meeting and approved the borrowing of an additional $2.1 million to complete the arena project. At this point, I wish to state that I am in complete disagreement to this process of handling public funds. Perhaps what I am about to suggest should have been done before the “borrow” part. But that’s spilled milk now, so here goes. In order to combat this huge debt imposed upon the taxpayers of Creston and its districts, I would suggest a committee be formed to organize the following fundraising events and entertainment to alleviate the debt and burden of annual maintenance costs of the new pool facilities for years to come: Under the roof of the rec centre: •Once a month gourmet dinner and dance with a live band, door prizes combined with ticket draw events to follow. •Alternate dinners with a one-hour live theatre show. •Once a month have a western dance night or a traditional ballroom dance. •Once a month have a “dry” teens dance. •A Saturday or Sunday afternoon for teenage talent to play their instruments and sing. •Every other month have a Casino night with crown and anchor wheels, blackjack tables, etc., followed with a couple of draws on a flatscreen TV and a stainless steel fridge and stove. •Have an early spring annual archery competition with moving targets. These events would bring competitors in from Castlegar to Cranbrook.

Opinion Line

•Have a pig and whistle pub night with karaoke with pizza for dinner. All the money collected from competitors registering, gate fees and draw prizes will go toward the involved costs of tickets printed, the live bands, the food, the chef and assistants, then lastly the majority of it to the cause. Out in the rec centre parking lot: •Start off the Saturday or Sunday morning at 9 a.m. with a pancake and ham breakfast hosted by our fire department followed by a spinning reel and fly casting competition. This again will bring competitors from other neighboring towns and from Idaho. •Next to follow could be a character “outhouse” race mechanized with souped up lawnmower motors. •Following that, an annual tug of war event between the fire department and the RCMP. Challengers from other fire halls and RCMP detachments may get in on this. •The morning events could be finished off at noon or 12:30 p.m. with a chicken and cob barbecue and a beer garden. •The regional district could erect a large $ thermometer to show the diminishing debt in months to come. •CBC could be called in for some coverage to help put Creston on the map. In the rural areas: •The Creston Valley Rod and Gun Club could have an annual Christmas turkey shoot. It could also have an annual spring large bore competition shoot that would draw competitors from neighboring towns. •An annual autumn sponsored fivemile footrace could be held. •And annual late-spring “duck race” on Goat River, starting from the Canyon-Lister Bridge down to Highway 21. Let’s get this done now! Volunteers can register with their regional directors. Think of all the fun to be had by all. If we vegetate on this, the pool complex is going to break the town and all of us when each tax time rolls around again — and again.

In a closing note, I hope we all learned a lesson from the swimming pool referendum in that democracy only works when everyone votes. Michael Bunn Creston

Lower rents needed for downtown businesses To the Editor: (Re: “All should shop locally”, Dec. 15 Advance, page 7) I would totally agree; however, think about why someone would spend $50 in fuel to go shop elsewhere. Could it be that even with the fuel expense they are still saving enough money to make it worth their while? I don’t blame the business owners in Creston for high prices, but for the outrageous expense of renting a commercial building. How is it that rent here in Creston is higher than in Calgary or New York? Why are half the businesses in Creston up for sale? Why are some bought and right back up for sale? Why is half of the main street vacant? Do the owners have so much money that they couldn’t give a hoot? Who’s going to do something about it? We’ve had some wonderful little unique shops start up and just vanish as quickly as they appeared, little business that could provide employment. Anyone seen the employment board lately? I would ask the owners of these buildings to have a look at themselves. Do you care about your community or does the situation just give you a sense of power? Anna Moore Erickson

Christmas spirit at Vancouver garden

Sometime between Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve, I drove my family into Vancouver. We arrived at the VanDusen Botanical Garden shortly after 4:30 p.m. (opening) and found street parking sev-

golden chain trees. The evergreen plants always look good but in the spirit of the season all the plants, with or without leaves, were decorated. Some were outlined. Some were 3D. Lights for leaves and some even lights for fruit. A grouping of weeping threadleaf cypress trees were underlit by three orange floodlights. The shape of the trees, their architecture, looked spectacular. Of course, I have all these plants around my house here; I just Evan Davies don’t have the energy to put up that many lights. I’ll bet they do as well raising funds over the holiday season as they do with their real garden tours through any other season. After a couple of hours, it was time to make a quick getaway from the big city. Another garden I see when I’m visiting my folks on the Coast is a little Buddhist temple up the street from where they live. Over the years, I’ve watched it grow from an empty halfacre backyard into quite the garden. Just this last year, they have added two small temples with the really cool curved rooflines. For years now, the monks have been growing bamboo and other hedges to create outdoor rooms. They have added some really spectacular statuary, big pieces and the whole effect is really quite stunning. It reminds me that my next foray into Vancouver should include a trip to the Classical Chinese Garden. Perhaps in 2012. Thank you all for the support and encouragement over the last few years and I look forward to seeing you again this spring. Happy New Year! Back when it all began

While looking ahead, I was reflecting back. Perhaps, that is a good thing to do a little more often. No, it didn't all begin with a “big bang”, but with a number of little events and incidents that kept heightening and nurturing my interest in the outdoors. And so began

Out There

Ed McMackin a lifetime of interest that expanded into various endeavours, such as many rambles and snoopings, camp naturalist, nature study guide, science teaching, a career and fostering conservation through acquaintance and awareness. The first encounter with nature that I remember leaving a significant impression on me actually took place, not out there, but in a family friend's office. I had a little job emptying wastepaper cans and when I entered her office, this one day after school, she showed me a shallow box having a glass top covering a layer of cotton baton. Under the glass and spread on

Opinion Line / Regional News the cotton were a number of dried butterflies and moths. The sight of these onceliving creatures made an indelible impression on my mind. I remember that meeting to this day. Up to that point in the late ’50s, I had never seen, even though dead, such beautiful creatures. To learn that such things existed sparked an exploratory trip that has never come to an end. Then, my grandfather went to Halifax on a job. When he returned he brought back the most unusual gifts. He gave my brother a brand new card game of birds called Goldfinch. Each card had a detailed picture of a bird with the appropriate name below. Then, to me, he presented a butterfly and moth card game called Monarch. This game interested me most. I went through all 60 cards, over and over again, until I knew each butterfly and moth by name. I met a lot of wild personalities there. But I never thought I would ever meet up with any of them personally. In my mind, they were from somewhere else, a place where I would never be able to go (as a kid till grade 11, I never travelled more than 90 miles). My brother and I did our own exploring and devised most of our entertainment and play, and that was usually outdoors, winter and summer. One such thing we did was to twirl a small rock tied to the end of a string. I would let go of the string just at the right time and the rock would hurl high overhead. It is a good thing a window didn't get in the way. One evening, the device came down and lodged in one of the many branches of a small maple tree. I was up one of the skinny trunks in no time. I vigorously shook the offending branch with one hand while hanging on with the other. Something brown settled lazily to the

ground. Instantly, I called to my brother, “It's mine! It's mine!” and down out of the tree I came to “rescue” my prize. It was huge! My brother, at first, couldn't see what all the excitement was about. He thought it was just a brown leaf. I was spellbound. It was one of those huge moths shown in the card game, a

But all of it, from the beginning years, to this point in time came as a result of biking many country roads, tramping through snow on foot and on snowshoes around alder swamps on the outskirts of Sunny Brae (Moncton, N.B.) searching for cocoons, searching roadside bushes for bird nests and ditches for Moosehead Ale, Coke and Sussex ginger ale bottles. Campaign raising funds for mammography equipment

EAST KOOTENAY FOUNDATION FOR HEALTH

The East Kootenay Regional Hospital (EKRH) serves a large and diverse population, many of which face the same health-related trials and tribulations that cause hardship and heartache in larger centres. These illnesses include breast cancer, which will affect one in nine women in the region and take the life of one out of every 29 women. The health care professionals who treat the residents of the East Kootenay region are second to none — indeed, many of the finest nurses, diagnosticians, clinicians, general practitioners and surgeons live here. However, their ability to treat patients is sometimes limited by essential equipment — and lack thereof. Unfortunately, even equipment that is deemed necessary might not be in the immediate health care budget, and it is up to

L-R: Marsha Plant (breast cancer supporter) Julie Giles (breast cancer survivor) Judy Dickson (breast cancer supporter) Creston, BC

others to find a way to bridge the gap in care. The East Kootenay Foundation of Health (EKFH) has rolled out the largest public campaign in the organization’s history in order to fill a significant gap. In October, EKFH began a two-year, $1 million fundraising effort for the purchase of a digital stereotactic mammography machine for the EKRH. The endeavour is one that is fully endorsed by the medical staff at the hospital. Radiologist Julie Nicol is often on the front end of breast cancer diagnosis. Nicol said that the analog unit currently being used at the hospital is so out-of-date that attachments to upgrade the technology are no longer an option, and that a complete replacement of the equipment with state-of-the-art digital imagery capabilities is essential to early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

“The equipment we have is still good in that we can still diagnose breast cancer,” said Nicol. “However, with digital technology, we can get away with doing fewer film views with less radiation and less breast compression, and the diagnosis is a little more sensitive.” Nicol said that digital mammography also means faster, more accurate analysis of results, which in turn means that X-rayguided (stereotactic) biopsies can often be performed the same day as discovery, eliminating harrowing wait times for patients. On the other hand, patients requiring digital mammography are currently sent to other centres such as Calgary, Kamloops or Nelson, where Nicol described the wait times as “significant.” “This option reduces the chance of any patient being left behind,” she said. Dr. Peter Chong is a general

surgeon at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital who has performed numerous procedures on breast cancer patients. Chong believes that acquiring a digital stereotactic mammography machine is the last piece of the puzzle in terms of giving regional patients the best holistic breast cancer care available, close to home. “It’s the only service, other than radiation therapy, that we’re missing,” said Chong. “Not only is that important in terms of saving patients travel costs and hassle, it also reduces the risk of patients getting surgery that they might not otherwise get if this technology were available, because the only other alternative to a stereotactic biopsy is a surgical biopsy.” Chong added that risk of complications and recovery times are both reduced with the stereotactic surgery, which is better for the patient and for overall health care costs. There is virtually no

incision, the need for general anesthetic is often lessened, and post-operative care for the patient is usually easier to manage. In 2009, the EKFH’s Starlite Campaign for Excellence in Health Care brought in significant funds for the purchase of a sentinel node biopsy probe for the EKRH surgical team. “Digital stereotactic mammography completes the diagnostic management of breast disease while the sentinel node probe has completed the surgical management of breast disease,” said Chong. “We have been using it fairly regularly to reduce the complication rate from breast surgery such as pain, numbness, and lymphedema in the arm and armpit.” A Clear View—a Digital Mammography Campaign officially began Oct. 2. Funeral play back for second run SASQUATCH ARTS AND MUSIC SOCIETY

Submitted photo

The cast of The Funeral of Mortimer Johnson: (from left) Roxy Schmalz, Suzanne Chubb, Jon Smith, Ann Deatherage, Jordan Koop, Gail Kitt, Jason Smith, Kelly Mehrer, Stephanie Sweet, Derek Doyle and Bobby Doran.

The creators got the idea from the Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, the popular “environmental theatre” event that enjoyed long runs in Vancouver, Toronto and New York, and is still running in Las Vegas and San Francisco. Rather than simply watching, ticket holders are seated among the performers, effectively becoming part of the action. Jon Smith plays Mortimer Johnson, and other characters

include family members of the deceased, played by Gail Kitt (mother), Kelly Mehrer (brother), Roxy Schmalz (widow) and Bobby Doran (daughter). Deatherage and Smith also play roles, joined by Suzanne Chubb, Derek Doyle, Jordan Koop, Stephanie Sweet and Dan Caverly. “We have a great cast, and I’m so glad they were able to return to revive this play,” said

Deatherage. “It’s a lot of fun, and we’re happy to be able to share it with more people.” Tickets for the revival of The Funeral of Mortimer Johnson are $30, available only in advance at Black Bear Books and Kingfisher Used Books, and include the play, which begins at 6 p.m., and dinner (cash bar). The play contains subject matter and language suitable for mature audiences.

From page 11 They may not have much military intelligence but their emotional intelligence just might win out. Village has a large cast: Ali George, Tim Miller, Galadriel Rael, Carol VanR, Ingrid Zaiss Baetzel, Anna Rose, Robert Agnew, Sandra Bernier, Michelle Moss, Gus and Grace George, Zyan Fukushima-Rael, Felix Wedge-Darchen, Jacqueline Wedge, Kate Page, Lea Belcourt and Janet Wallace. Crewmembers include Sara Cadeau, Theo and Chris Artzoglou, Mauz Kroker and Doreen Zaiss. The play will see the light of night on Jan. 20 and 21 in the Crawford Bay Elementary Secondary School Theatre. Doors will open 7:30 p.m. and be locked at 8 pm sharp. We will start promptly. Give yourself ample time to stake your claim on good seats. We can accommodate 90 audience members per night and highly recommend buying your tickets before the date of performance. There may be a few tickets left at the door, but don’t count on it. Because the play is two hours in length and not appropriate for babies or small restless children, we need to limit our audience to those who have no ants in their pants — or diapers. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 students and seniors, available at Crawford Bay Store, Gray Creek Store and Riondel Market. Photo credit: Alex MacAulay

Back by popular demand, The Funeral of Mortimer Johnson returns to the Snoring Sasquatch arts house on Jan. 20 and 21, following a successful run in the fall. Two performances ran on successive Fridays, both of which were sold out before the first one ran. “We were pleasantly surprised by its popularity,” said Jason Smith, who co-created the play with Ann Deatherage and Brian Lawrence as a fundraiser for the Snoring Sasquatch. “But only 35 people can come to each performance, so we knew a lot of people missed out the first time around.” The Funeral of Mortimer Johnson is an interactive play, consisting mainly of improvised dialogue and actions following a plot developed by Smith, Deatherage and Lawrence. It deals with the aftermath of the death of the title character, a fictitious octogenarian billionaire and Creston Valley industry magnate, and consists of three acts — the funeral at the Snoring Sasquatch, a licensed dinner at Coffee Creek Café and the reading of the will back at the Sasquatch — during which the performers remain in character as they interact with each other and the audience.

Pros on call at Canyon Street computer shop

W

ith technology advancing and changing from one day to the next, keeping up with it can be daunting. Fortunately, help is available at Pro-to-Call. The 1134 Canyon St. shop offers custom computers, accessories, maintenance and Story and repairs — as well photo by as training to help customers make Brian Lawrence the most of their equipment. “We give them that time,” said owner Kitt Santano, seated at a workbench under a full-wall projection of an extensive list of upcoming and completed work orders. Now in its fifth year, the business has changed significantly. Originally simply a repair shop below Griffith Surveys, Pro-to-Call expanded and moved downtown with the support of Santano’s wife (then girlfriend), Natalie, who has her own business, Natalie Santano Photography. “My wife saw my passion and dream, and helped me get where I needed to go,” said Santano. At the time, he worked at Kootenay Employment Services and operated Pro-to-Call part-time, but Natalie’s encouragement led Santano to add sales to the business, and pursue that full-time. It was a logical extension of an interest Santano developed as a teenager. “I used to take apart washers, dryers, toasters,” he said. “I’ve always been interested in the electronic aspect. And I like the everchanging aspect. That’s what really

interests me.” The expansion allowed Santano to hire a staff, who are Microsoft A+ certified, and add a retail space, which gives him the ability to offer products that have been previously unavailable in Creston, including tablets. “It’s something I’ve been asked a lot for, so we’ve taken that step,” he said. “People want diversity in Creston.” For Pro-to-Call, that diversity extends to security camera installation, but not to Apple computers. Santano doesn’t share the strong reaction of many PC users who dislike the competition, but becoming a certified Apple repair location would have involved making many changes to fall in line with that company’s standards. However, as he pointed out, 96 or 97 per cent of the industry uses PCs. The back room of the shop has a large table typically covered with computers under repair, but customers who can’t make it to the shop aren’t left out — when needed, Pro-to-Call technicians have the ability to access computers remotely to conducts repairs. “If they do have issues, we just get in there and take care of it,” said Santano. And he is so confident that he and his staff can get the job done, one of the most enjoyable parts of his job is to talk to customers to hear what they have to say. “One of my favourite things — and people think I’m crazy — I call a person and say, ‘How are you doing? How is the work we’ve done?’ ”

Peewees defeat Fernie CRESTON VALLEY MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION

The Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association’s peewee Chiefs team was in Fernie on Sunday to play Elk Valley. With some great team passing, the Creston team came away with a 12-2 win. They continue to work hard and are playing with great confidence. Scoring was spread out by all players, for a nice start to the second half. The highlight of the game was their puck movement on their only power-play opportunity, on which they scored. The team will now get back to practices and prepare for the Jan. 20-22 Trail tournament.

Rosie Rotar Ten years have gone by so fast Seems like yesterday - not so far in the past But the sweet memories will never leave Because in our hearts, we will always believe You’re watching over us, like you always did You - the mother, the rest of us - the kid! Being the eldest of your brothers and sisters, You were their mother, Whom kissed all their blisters Everyone idolized you, Mom - No one can deny They would come to you; You wouldn’t turn a blind eye Rose was the only name That could be picked for you Your down to earth spirit, Your love was true blue Your generosity, kindness, Beauty and perfection You lit up the room, Mom You got everyone’s attention To go shopping with you And find every passerby Would see Rosie coming and have to say Hi You were a magnet, it was very strong The center of the family, You could do no wrong!! We miss the stroke - down our cheek With your soft hand, you would speak “My Bella Bella!! I love you!!!” Sealed it with a kiss, and a big hug too So gentle, so lovingly, so perfect in every way Why oh why, did you get called on that day? You’ll be in our hearts forever, All our love, daughter Lorraine, LaCara and Shane

Creston B&B wins KABDA award

KOOTENAY ABORIGINAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AGENCY

Last year, the Kootenay Aboriginal Business Development Agency celebrated Small Business Week by seeking outstanding aboriginal businesses in the Kootenay region to honour as Aboriginal Business of the Year. KABDA is honouring Bison Spirit Bed and Breakfast. Creston owner-operators Ed and Sylvia Turner created this unique bed and breakfast five years ago, featuring Métis/Aboriginal decor and a circle of life garden patio. The theme was developed from Ed and Sylvia’s enjoyment of native crafts they create. Guests enjoy freshly made bannock and other specialties from their Food Safecertified kitchen. Their guests have come from all over the world and enjoy the creative art done by Ed and Sylvia that is meticulously exhibited throughout the grounds and inside the bed and breakfast. The Turner’s goal is to provide positive, lasting memories of Creston and of Métis/Aboriginal culture for their guests. Judging by comments on their website such as “super clean” and “fabulous hosts, great food and wonderful accommodations,” they have clearly achieved their goal. For more information, visit www. bbcanada.com/bisonspirit. Cranbrook’s Tipi Mountain Native Plants Ltd. specializes in the propagating of plants species indigenous to the Kootenay region. OFFICIAL VISITORS’ GUIDE

2011 VISITORS’ GUIDE

The Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce Official Visitors’ Guide is published by The Creston Valley Advance for the Chamber. It is a vital piece of marketing for the Visitor Information Centre and a key component of relocation packages delivered by the Chamber of Commerce and our local realtors, plus dozens of businesses hand out the guide to their customers. The guide is a 64 page, full glossy magazine and includes local editorial content highlighting all the valley has to offer, area maps, photos, directories and business information. We print and distribute 25,000 copies. The guide will be a fully searchable document on the getawaybc. com website promoted on all of Black Press newspaper websites (over 100 community papers in BC and Alberta), and will also be available on the Chamber & Creston Valley Advance Websites.
