Gala to feature Titanic theme

From page 1 Since its inception as a community foundation in 2004, CKF has issued grants totalling nearly $117,000 (through 2010). Recipients have been as diverse as the Creston Valley Hospice Society, the College of the Rockies greenhouse project, the Pet Adoption and Welfare Society (PAWS), the Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program and local science fairs. The foundation welcomes donations in many forms. Online donations can be made at ckfoundation.com or cheques can be mailed to Box 701, Creston BC, V0B 1G0. Planned giving can easily be arranged by adding the foundation to a will or naming it as an insurance beneficiary. Donations are tax deductible. In addition to the current partnership with Overwaitea, CKF director Heather Suttie says plans are well underway to follow up last year ’s very popular Grand Soiree with another in June. “The June 2 Grand Soiree will be presented in partnership with the College of the Rockies Greenhouse Project, which will share in the proceeds,” she said. “It promises to be a memorable event because it will have a Titanic theme, to recognize the 100th anniversary of the ship’s sinking. … “The CrestonKootenay Foundation has very positive effects throughout our c o m m u n i t y . Supporting the foundation is an excellent way to support your community.”

Women of Distinction luncheon returns BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

From 2001-2006, six Creston women were honoured as Women of Distinction as part of a series of fundraisers organized by the Creston and District Community Resource Centre. Now one of the original organizers, Julie Miller, is bringing back the luncheon to honour Jenni Jacobs. “We are going to use the luncheon as a fundraiser to help send Jenni back to Camp Sundown in New York, hopefully this summer,” Miller said last week. “We are going to honour her as a young woman who has dreams and aspirations in spite of having a rare, chronic disorder that places severe limits on her options.” Jacobs, a Lower Kootenay Band resident who recently completed her high school studies, has xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) a rare genetic disorder that affects one in a million North Americans. She is extremely sensitive to sun and other sources of light and has undergone several operations to remove skin malignancies. Many suffers of XP lose their eyesight because eyes are especially sensitive to light. Their life expectancy is typically shortened by the effects of the disorder. “Jenni is an inspiration to others,” Miller said. “We will honour the strength that she demonstrates in her life as she tries to be as much like other teenagers as she possibly can.” Helping to offset the costs of a return trip to

Lorne Eckersley photo

A Women of Distinction luncheon will be held next month to raise funds for Jenni Jacobs, who has xeroderma pigmentosum.

Camp Sundown is one way to help Jacobs achieve another dream, one of which was fulfilled late last summer when she was flown by helicopter to a nighttime party at the Rotary Splash Park in Centennial Park. Camp Sundown is a “night camp” in Craryville, N.Y., created to offer sun sensitive children and their families a way to meet others with similar problems. At the facility, families can search for solutions and XP sufferers can experience camp life as other young people do, but on a different time clock. Since her first visit to Camp Sundown a few years ago, Jenni has expressed a wish to return, perhaps as a peer counsellor. She hopes to make the trip to New York by train so that she can see part of the continent from the ground, rather than from an airplane. The Women of Distinction luncheon will be held on March 7, in a location yet to be announced. Tickets will be available at the community resource centre (top floor of the Family Practice Medical Clinic on 16th Avenue North) or Creston Card and Stationery. Women who were honoured in previous luncheons include Mary Basil, Freda Brockner, Jane Blackmore, Jill Fehr, Virginia Paccassi Naeve and Elizabeth Hutton. “We are going to attempt to recreate the energy that those previous luncheons had,” Miller said. For more information or to volunteer help with the luncheon, contact Miller at jmiller@ ekass.com or 250-428-5547.

Singers to compete for Creston title BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor Twenty singers will be competing Feb. 9 for a chance to win the 2012 edition of Creston’s Best Singer — and the competition is going to be fierce. “There will be an incredible amount of talent on the stage,” said producer Vern Gorham. “I don’t envy the judges who will be choosing the three finalists next week.” The audience judged 30 singers on Jan. 19, and the top 20 waited nearly two weeks before their names were released yesterday (after this issue’s deadline; visit www.crestonvalleyadvance.ca for further details and a link to the winners). Gorham did, however, provide the names of the oldest and youngest singers who will move on to the next round: John Herbaut, who enchanted the audience with his rendition of La Vie En Rose, and nine-year-old Alexi Blackmore, who was a dead ringer for the original artist, Selena Gomez, when she sang Love You Like A Love Song.

But winning and losing aside, the contest will be one the audience is sure to remember. “It will be a great night of entertainment,” said Gorham. “Everyone should come prepared to have a good time.” Tickets are $8 for seniors/students/children and $10 for adults in advance at Black Bear Book or Kingfisher Used Books, and $12 at the door.

First 2012 PAWS Volunteer of the Month is

Pat May

Pat is a newcomer to Creston and early last year she visited the PAWS shelter to have a look around and maybe adopt a dog. Well, Pat instantly fell in love with two PAWS dogs, adopted them both, then filled out volunteer forms and that was it! She enthusiastically dove right in and within a very short time made herself indispensible. From the first she has been fabulous in the office, handling calls, doing paperwork, organizing files, you name it - she can do it. PLUS she loves working with the animals, especially the dogs and is helping them all become well mannered shelter residents. And now Pat has put her hand and heart to fostering a young cat. She appears to be failing “Fostering 101” but in our books that makes her the best!

Thank you Pat for all you do for PAWS and the pets at Claudia’s Place Animal Shelter. This ad space donated by the Creston Valley Advance

January 28 •When police arrived to check out a reported fight at an Erickson Road residence, they found the residents were watching a Rocky movie on television, with the volume turned up. •Police checked a vehicle near Centennial Park and noted the aroma of marijuana. A small quan-

tity was seized for destruction but no charges were laid. •Police were called to a 23rd Avenue South residence after a male, known to the residents, attempted to enter the building. The investigation continues. •An unidentified male wearing a blue toque with white pompom was reported as checking for unlocked vehicles in a Vancouver Street parking lot. Police ask anyone noticing suspicious activity to report it immediately as there have been many thefts from unlocked vehicles recently. •A vehicle flipped over when the driver swerved as he tried to avoid an oncoming vehicle in the wrong lane on an icy Highway 3 in Yahk. No injuries resulted. •When police arrived at a local pub after receiving a report that an intoxicated male was trying to enter the building, they found the suspect had two outstanding arrest warrants and was in breach of court order not to consume alcohol. Regional district debates smart meters GREG NESTEROFF Nelson Star

The Regional District of Central Kootenay wants FortisBC to give customers the chance to opt out of smart meters — but has stopped short of supporting a local group’s call for a moratorium on the controversial devices. Cliff Paluck of Castlegar led a delegation before the board on Jan. 19, representing a group of Grandview Heights residents as well as the Kootenay chapter of Citizens for Safe Technology. He cited a litany of concerns about the meters in urging the RDCK to ask the province to ban mandatory installations “until the major issues and problems are independently identified and satisfactorily addressed and alternative solutions provided at no additional cost to customers.” Paluck said they’re worried about possible health effects from electromagnetic radiation generated by the meters, as well as safety, privacy, and accuracy. He pointed to a series of studies that suggested various problems. “Mandatory exposure to wireless meters would cause severe suffering for many in our communities,” he wrote in a submission to the board. Blair Weston of FortisBC, in

a separate presentation, said the company has not yet applied to the BC Utilities Commission to install the meters nor decided on the exact technology it wants to use. However, he said there would be many advantages to “advanced metering infrastructure,” as FortisBC calls it, including a more reliable grid, less wasted energy, better balanced loads, and reduced theft. The meters would transmit data by antennae four or five times a day for a few seconds at a time, sending out a pulse to a collector station with billing data, Weston said. The radio frequencies would be within Health Canada guidelines as well as more stringent European standards, he added. The changeover is expected to cost $40 million, but FortisBC doesn’t believe it will have any effect on power rates. Although Paluck’s group said they would be much more comfortable with wired meters, Weston said they rejected it as more costly and lacking the same bandwidth. Rural Kaslo director Andy Shadrack initially proposed a motion calling for a moratorium on the meters, but withdrew it when other directors expressed concern the wording was too adversarial. “People with health concerns

are being told to suck it up and deal with it,” Shadrack said. “I don’t think that’s appropriate.”

Greg Nesteroff photo

Cliff Paluck of Castlegar asked the regional district to call for a moratorium on smart meter installation in B.C.

The board instead passed a motion suggested by East Shore director Garry Jackman, which called on FortisBC to consult the public on the specific technology it selects and provide an opt-out policy. Jackman said he believes there is a place for smart meters, but utilities have to be proactive about reassuring the public. “Putting people in a position of having fear and uncertainty isn’t right,” he said. “Even if somebody doesn’t have health risks, worrying about the possibility is wrong.” Jackman adds it’s “critical” people aren’t forced into some-

From page 4 •Police determined that a complaint from Hillside Street about rumours being spread on Facebook and email were not criminal offenses. •A vehicle lost control on an icy Highway 3 in Yahk and struck a concrete barrier on Yahk Slough Bridge. No injuries were reported. •A Pilot Bay resident reported that the phone

thing, given the level of uncertainty. Rural Nelson director Ramona Faust said she’s concerned people who live near the data collection points won't know it — which may infringe on their rights. Silverton director Leah Main said people have responded strongly to the issue because BC Hydro was ordered to implement smart meters without going through the utilities commission, “adding to a feeling of powerlessness and getting screwed over by government again.” She likened it to the HST debate.

Nelson mayor John Dooley said while he respected the delegation’s presentation, it contained more theoreticals than fact. “There is a complete lack of understanding by the public and most of these presentations are based on emotion,” he said. Dooley noted the city has received questions and complaints about smart meters, even though Nelson Hydro doesn’t use them. (Its meters do report customer consumption wirelessly, but lack many other features.) The motion passed with a few directors opposed.

It has been fascinating to see concern about the increasing spread between rich and poor unfolding. What, if anything, will come of it? Ironically, while the general public feels pretty helpless, the majority should have at least some say in the way executives are compensated. Anyone who has shares in mutual funds, through workplace pension programs or in their individual registered retirement savings plan, owns a piece of the very corporations that are paying outrageous salaries and bonuses, in the form of cash or shares, to top executives. Perhaps a formation of these shareholders, along the lines of a class action suit, might help make a difference. But make no mistake about it, there will always be a penchant for money to end up in a disproportionately small number of hands. I often describe this reality by saying that money is magnetic — it attracts more money and the bigger the pile, the greater the magnetic property. I suspect that any schoolteacher could demonstrate this by giving each child in class a loonie a day for a week, with the only caveat being that the money could not be spent outside the classroom. How many people think that each student will have five loonies at the end of the week? Fat chance. The bully will simply beat the coins out of some, the manipulator will con

Technology threatens privacy

The library receives an actual, tree-killing paper copy of the British Guardian newspaper on a weekly basis and I wait for that one like some people wait for the new People magazine. The latest edition does not even mention the U.S. until page six and then, under the heading “U.S. Military there are three stories, one with the title “Guantanamo: America’s Lingering Failure. In the following pages, there are only several short articles from America, and only one mention about the state of American politics and it is under “Comment and Debate. My favourite line from that article is, “It’s all looking a bit of a nightmare now isn’t it? I’m hearing that again, as non-Americans watch not just the bizarre Republican presidential field but the paralysis of a U.S. political system that has rendered an elected president apparently almost incapable of doing almost anything. A great relief after our own media seem to take the candidates vying for the GOP candidacy with actual seriousness. The paper does not mention Canada even once. Tells you something, doesn’t it? I digress; that article was not the one that gave me the original train of thought but it was a story on page 18 with the title “Hi-tech Threat to Privacy. I have mentioned this before, and even since that time, a few months ago, the

invasion of privacy by tech companies continues on a steadfast trajectory to obtain every detail about every user through what they look at online, what they create and pass

should be, is the incredible increase in waste and environmental degradation in the production of all these devices, all these latest versions of phones and tablet computers and how many perfectly good televisions are being tossed out of homes for newer, flatter and bigger versions. Perhaps with as much importance is the fact almost everything you use to connect to the net or a cable is manufactured somewhere other than North America. Not sure how Americans can blame a president for the loss of jobs, especially middle class jobs and jobs for women when it is the corporations who willingly go offshore looking for cheap labour, reduced safety standards and fewer, if any, government oversight to take care of workers and environment. We seem to be evolving and devolving at the same time, and speaking of evolution, the library is celebrating not only Darwin’s birthday on Feb. 12, but also the global celebration of science and reason (despite the fact reason does not seem to be driving politics or our respect for our own world these days). At 2 p.m. on Feb. 11, we are showing the film, What Darwin Didn’t Know, a PBS production exploring what modern science has done to enhance Darwin’s theory. They also let you know there are ways of avoiding at least some of the intrusion on your web activity; however, it is very cumbersome and more than the average user or I would think of doing. Jesus will save Earth

To the Editor: Canada has pulled out of the Kyoto accord. This is a good thing. The climate is changing; don’t worry, be happy! I think everyone would sleep better if they had some solid science and information to ease their green worries. Though I don’t support its references to evolution, I recommend the DVD The Great Global Warming Swindle. Anyone interested can borrow the copy at the Creston and District Library (thanks, library), buy it online or watch it at YouTube. Should we stop taking care of the Earth? No, it’s our home, for now, and the Bible clearly states that God will destroy those who destroy the Earth. (Revelation 11:18) God calls us to be good stewards of everything He has given us. Yet there is nothing wrong with industry. It’s only when corruption comes into any equation that things turn abusive. Could corruption come into things like accords? Has anyone looked into how the drafters of these climate treaties are big proponents of population control? They’re not thinking paper or plastic; they’re thinking population control and population reduction. It’s this kind of thinking that is the enemy of humanities future, not CO2. In the greenhouse gas “family”, CO2 makes up a very small percentage. What is one of the biggest? H2O — that’s right, water! Should we ban water? Watch The Great Global Warming Swindle, including the extras, and relax. Let’s take care of the Earth and humanity. Remember, we can’t save this planet; it “shall wax old like a garment.”(Isaiah 51:6) We need Jesus Christ, the Creator and re-creator, whose “salvation shall be forever” and whose “righteousness shall not be abolished.” (Isaiah 51:6). His solution? He promised, “For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.” (Isaiah 65:17) This truth is echoed in Revelation 21:1, where the apostle John stated, “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away.” Jesus is the hope of humanity, not weak human political bodies that try to control countries and individuals through corrupt laws, force and coercion, dissolution of sovereignty and cessation of rights. I applaud Canada for withdrawing from the Kyoto accord. We should not “follow a multitude to do evil.” (Exodus 23:2) Stephen Lemky Creston

Stop Syrian exploitation

To the Editor: What stirred me most in my latest readings on Syria is that its people, who created such wonderful architecture and other cultural assets, had to suffer so much under foreign domination in their long and amazing history. Some 10,000 years ago, agriculture and animal husbandry originated there, spreading to many areas, including Europe. Its capital, Damascus, is nearly 5,000 years old. Syria was the envy of many — Canaanites, Phoenicians, Hebrews, Babylonians, Persians, Macedonians,

Opinion Line

Byzantines and Romans occupied it. In 1517, it was occupied by Turks, who stayed 400 years and exploited it to the bone. When this ended in 1920, the Arab Kingdom of Syria was created under British appointed King Faisal — of Saudi origin. He was overthrown the same year by the French army, with the support from the quasi League of Nations. The insurgency of Syrian Ba’ath party finally in 1946 forced the French to leave. In 1958 Syria merged with Egypt, creating United Arab Republic. This lasted till 1961, when Syria had a coup and reestablished itself as the Syrian Arab Republic. In 1970, Hafiz al-Assad, the minister of defense, replaced the civilian leadership during a bloodless change and took on the top position in government, as well as the ruling Ba’ath party. After his death in 2000 from pulmonary fibrosis, his son, Bashar al-Assad, was elected party leader and president. He is a medical doctor, and his postgraduate studies in ophthalmology were done in London, England. In the West, he is described as a tyrant, but that is not the reason for the current U.S./NATO hostilities against him; we know that U.S./NATO are friendly with worse tyrannies, such as Saudi Arabia, Israel and Bahrain, to name only three. The main reason for hostilities against Syria is that the U.S., Israel and their hangers-on want there to be a capitalist-friendly regime, which Syria, ruled by the Arab Socialist Ba’ath party, is not. There are very few private banks in Syria, Islamic banks predominate and the Central Bank of Syria is state owned; this alone is enough to call for regime change. Any president or prime minister, anywhere, who puts the needs of his own people above the interests of the Anglo-American-Jewish empire, will be removed. For this reason, Syrian leadership has been vilified, just as leaderships of other sovereign states have been vilified earlier — Yugoslavia, Iraq and Libya, among others. Throughout 2011, the empire has been clandestinely doing various criminal operations in Syria. With the help of local puppets, they assembled and armed large numbers of assorted goons to drive terror into Syrian population and security forces. The civilian casualties alone run into thousands, and are conveniently blamed by corrupt western media on president Assad. In this way the Empire is again manufacturing a humanitarian crisis that calls for U.S./ NATO intervention, like in Libya. On Dec. 2, Asia Times Online reported, “NATO had set up a command and control center in Turkey’s southern Hatay province, where British commandos and French intelligence are training the Free Syrian Army. The target: to foment a civil war engulfing northern Syria. From the website of FBI whistleblower Sibel Edmonds, comes now the confirmation that a pincer movement may be in effect, involving Jordan. Edmonds quotes local sources according to which ‘hundreds of soldiers who speak languages other than Arabic’ have been moving into Jordanian villages next to the Syrian border.” Lately, over one thousand U.S./NATO Islamic terrorists from Libya and their commander were airlifted to Turkey to infiltrate into Syria; also, some U.S. forces from Iraq were not repatriated, but were transferred to Jordan. It is clear that the U.S./NATO and their stooges are surrounding Syria, and there is little hope she will escape devastation. Our bloodthirsty, degenerate leaders, instead of caring for their own citizens, are spending taxpayers’ billions on destroying homes and killing and injuring innocent people 10,000 miles from here. This is insane. Anton Skerbinc Boswell

Shopping locally helps community

To the Editor: First off, I want to give my condolences to Mike Daybell and his family. I have known Mike almost 25 years and am saddened by this business loss to the community. Years ago, I was at a Christmas dinner and overheard some colleagues of mine talking about how cheap it was to shop in the states. I, of course, could not let this conversation die, so I asked the simple question, “Do you want your grandchildren working for Wally World?” The quick answer, without any thought, was “No, of course not!” I have been in sales for over 23 years now, and been a business owner for about 10 of these years. I have seen dramatic changes since the early ‘90s, and these changes for the most part have been negative for most small business owners, especially those Canadian businesses on the border. At one time, a customer was willing to wait six to eight weeks for their purchase, with a 50 per cent deposit, and if they did not like the item when it arrived they got hit with a 20 per cent restocking charge and/or an in-store credit. Now if a company does not have it in stock, they might lose the sale, not to mention that the customer knows as much or more than the sales guy. So here is a list of very common misconceptions consumers have about business owners: •Business owners are lining their pockets with all the profits they are making. The truth is there is very little profit anymore. Most business owners find that by the time you pay staff, a location, heat, lights, stationary, advertising, etc., there is little left to pay their mortgage and food. Many business owners have taken part time jobs themselves just to pay the bills. •Creston property owners charge too much. The truth is that Creston property owners are right on par, if not as much as half that of the big city. Property owners, if they have a mortgage on the property they are leasing, need to make enough money to pay property taxes, insurance and mortgage. •It costs so much to live in Creston, and this is why business owners are charging more money. This is so false in so many ways. I have so many examples I don’t want to bore you with them. By the way, some of my friends on the Coast need to take home over $4,000 a month just to survive, and they live in a modest condo. Canadians need to realize we are not Americans, and comparing us to them is pointless in regards to pricing and savings; don’t get me started on the cost of health care, for a quick example. I don’t want to sound bitter, I appreciate all the business I get, although I’ve heard all the opinions of why people won’t shop in Creston, and frankly, most of these opinions are unfounded. I know that most business owners are just trying to survive, and they are our neighbours and friends. If you’re upset with the pricing, talk to us first, instead of getting it in the states without giving us a chance. Think of “your money” as the community’s money — if everyone started shopping local regardless of price, you would see the stores return to Canyon Street and give you more choice, the local economy would grow, and that 20 per cent more you paid would help someone in need. Soft wheat perfect for baking quick breads

Soft wheat is generally used for pastries or quick breads. Using hard wheat would result in a hard, dense and heavy end result where soft wheat yields much lighter results.

The

Locavore's Cookbook Heidi Bjarnason

This is because the amount of protein in soft wheat is considerably less. Generally, besides the difference in protein, the two kinds of wheat contain mostly the same vitamins and minerals. And just like hard wheat, soft wheat has a very long shelf life, as long as it’s not ground or broken in any way. Once it’s ground into flour it is only good for up to three months stored in the fridge or freezer in an airtight bag or container, although the flour is best used if ground as needed so that it’s always fresh. The taste of soft wheat is also much less “wheaty, which is a good transition for anyone trying to make the switch from using white flours to whole grains. The soft wheat from

our local community-supported agriculture grain is actually very light in color and very mild tasting, which is great for anyone who thinks they don’t like whole wheat, although you can’t always completely replace white flour for whole grains. A lot of times, baked goods will need less flour for the same amount of liquids, as the whole grains absorb more resulting in a drier and denser end product. The same amount of whole grain flour in comparison to white flour will also yield a smaller end result because whole wheat will not always rise as well as white flour. Khorasan and spelt are other grains that are lower in gluten and are also good for using in pastries or quick breads. Khorasan actually has a lower moisture content than wheat and can last slightly longer once ground, but should still be stored in the fridge or freezer. I have found that khorasan is the best for substituting in recipes that call for all-purpose flour as the bran and germ are fairly unnoticeable once ground into flour, and the flavor is very mild. I’ve also found that spelt, while it has it’s own unique but still fairly mild flavor, is slightly harder to

A MESSAGE FROM CRESTON & DISTRICT CREDIT UNION Re: Creston Place, 1230 Canyon Street Many members have asked us about the new building at 1230 Canyon Street, and we have realized there is a great deal of misinformation circulating regarding this Credit Union investment. Since it has been a huge endeavor that has forever changed the downtown core, it should come as no surprise that it has been under so much scrutiny and been the subject of so many coffee shop discussions. We are now taking the opportunity to set the record straight, so to speak, to ensure you are accurately informed. The Credit Union is the majority owner, in partnership with the developer. We decided to partner in this project because it fit our corporate and community philosophy. It provides new construction in the downtown core, and parallels the Town of Creston downtown revitalization plan quite well. It provides new options to retail tenants that have not been available for over three decades. Essentially, we feel it is a long term investment in our community by an organization that cares deeply about its local roots. It was built with confidence in the future of our business community. Faced with the current economic downturn, we realize that procuring tenants will take more time than we anticipated. However, because the building is an investment, the amount of money in this project is immaterial to our income statement on an

substitute. Usually in recipes that call for any kind of wheat flour, the amount of spelt needed is slightly more, or the amount of liquid should be slightly reduced. Some sources say to reduce the liquid by 25 per cent but I haven’t found it necessary to change it quite that much. As mentioned, soft wheat, or grains with less gluten like khorasan and spelt are best suited to quick breads or pastries, but can also be cooked whole to use in salads, pilafs or even mixed into yeast breads as chewy whole grains or used in part as flour in yeast bread recipes. Spelt Banana Bread 2 C spelt flour (add 1-2 tbsp for freshly ground flour as it’s fluffier than flour that has been sitting) 2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp baking soda 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 1/4 C maple syrup or honey 1/4 C flavorless oil 2 large eggs 2 C mashed bananas, or approximately 4 small 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 C chopped walnuts or chocolate chips (or a mix of both — optional) 2 tbsp coarse sugar for sprinkling over top (optional)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a loaf pan by spraying with oil or non-stick spray and set aside.

Banana bread can be made with spelt flour.

In a small bowl mix flour, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder and salt. Set aside. In a larger bowl, combine the wellmashed bananas with the maple syrup/honey, oil, eggs and vanilla. Add the dry ingredients to the banana mixture and mix quickly, adding the nuts or chocolate chips in the last minute of mixing. Small lumps or a little flour that is not completely combined is fine. Pour the batter into the loaf pan and sprinkle with coarse sugar over top, if desired. Place in the oven and bake 55-60 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the loaf comes out clean. Remove the loaf pan from the oven and let the loaf

Easy way to get rid of scammers annual basis. Thus, the cost of holding this investment while we are waiting for tenants is simply the lost returns on the money invested. This project did not break us. It is merely an investment in its infancy stage, with the full potential to return solid profits to us in the future. You (and potential tenants) may also be surprised to learn the lease rates are quite comparable to many other commercial spaces in Creston. In real estate terms, $1.00 per square foot per month, triple net, is the formula used. Many of you are already paying this. Our building is new, easily accessible, highly energy efficient, low maintenance and locally owned. Very few buildings in town can boast all of this. We feel very confident that once accurate information is available to interested parties, full tenancy will be obtained. Finally, please feel free to speak with us directly if you have any questions regarding this project. We would be happy to help the people in our community, especially our Credit Union members, hold beliefs based on truth and fact. We value your opinions and confidence, present and future, as we continue to invest and believe in our community.

Respectfully, The Board of Directors, Creston & District Credit Union

To the Editor: I have been reading in the police beat and other comments in your newspaper about Microsoft contacting you about problems on your computer and that they are contacting you to help you fix the problem. Firstly, these are scammers trying to get inside your computer to steal all your bank accounts and other information. The best way is to have an

answering machine, and then you can monitor who they are. If they persist and you don’t want any more calls, then try what I do. I have been getting calls from them quite often and there is no way to stop them from calling you, but I have developed a way to shut them up and hang up on you. Ask them all kinds of questions on who they are, what their Microsoft code num-

ber is and where are they calling from. Tell them you don’t have a computer or tell them you have an Apple computer — just keep bothering them and they will hang up on you or they will get so mad at you that they will swear at you. If everyone treats them this way they will soon give up and leave you alone. Ken Norris Creston 2.8125 x 4

Centre offers help with equipment

In my last column, I described our initial adventures as we embarked into the aquatic world of going swimming two or three times a week first thing in the morning. I’m happy to

have shortened rehabilitation times by half or avoided things like joint replacements simply by getting into a workout pattern in the pool. This is a small example of the stuff that we rarely saw in the outdoor pool and but which now forms part of the foundation of what the community complex represents to the community. It also continues on into the fitness area as we hear from people who had seldom come to the old comNeil Ostafichuk plex but now comment how their quality of life has report that we are hanging on the improved since they started using pool edge way less after each length the place. and energy levels are a lot higher on So, because you can use the facility those days. The maintenance staff all day when you buy a pass, we also loves me more because now that decided to get into some sort of fitI am floating around staring at the ness regimen and go to the fitness building, I tend to ask more questions gym after work on the days we go to them like, “Can you fix that?” and swimming. A bit daunting at first — “Could you have a look at…?” Maybe even though I have been in the track I am misinterpreting their fixed area hundreds of times, to actually smiles… get on a machine, properly set it and Another thing you discover as you try and look cool like you know what chat with the various patrons in the you’re doing, well, it didn’t go like I mornings is that there are a lot of had pictured it in my mind. Enter Tia inspirational stories out there. Not and Michelle, our very knowledgeonly do you meet ones that have able fitness technicians, who quickly shed a pile of weight or improved and painlessly showed us how to set their cardio, thus lowering risk of things up and what kinds of weights heart attack and a myriad of other to use for maximum benefit and safehealth issues, there are the ones that ty. when I was bulking up too much as I didn’t want to have to change out all my shirts, much like I have had to update my pants because of waist shrinkage due to hot water washing. All the stuff in the fitness track area is pretty straightforward once you are shown and it’s great to see a fair number of seniors using the equipment alongside students — pretty much the full range of ages depending on the time of day. The other day when we started, just looking through the fitness track windows onto the pool and hot tub as the afternoon sun angled in on kids playing and adults relaxing, it was a kind of an On Golden Pond moment. A silver haired lady on the next machine remarked, “We sure are lucky to have this place.” I would agree in part, although it wasn’t luck; it was through the dedication and perseverance of a number of individuals and groups over the years followed by the commitment and continuing support of the residents of the valley. Speaking of support, hats off to Tim Hortons, which is sponsoring a free community swim from 6-8 p.m. on March 19. Watch for further details in upcoming issues of the Creston Valley Advance. Neil Ostafichuk is the recreation supervisor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

Local singer and Jazz Council team up for concert next week SASQUATCH ARTS AND MUSIC SOCIETY

Jazz, how do we love thee? On Feb. 10, celebrate Valentine’s Day early with smooth, smouldering sounds and delicious desserts at the Snoring Sasquatch as the Jazz Council, a Cranbrook-based quintet, and Creston Valley vocalist Louise n’ha Ruby team up for an evening of favourite jazz love songs and upbeat originals. With nearly two dozen concerts behind them in 2011 alone, and a tremendously successful debut album, the Jazz Council is thrilled to kick off 2012 with a return engagement at the Snoring Sasquatch. The Jazz Council has a unique approach to jazz and their audiences. Non-jazz-heads will never leave a Jazz Council show saying, “The songs all sound the same” or “That was boring.” On the contrary, the Jazz Council firmly believes that jazz is, at its core, pop music, and can be both authentic and accessible. Their original compositions (eight of which make up their debut album, Dawn) and their covers weave together many different strands and sub-genres of jazz, giving the listener’s ears a well-balanced diet, while their ability to select sounds from a specific palette gives them a unique, clear sound that is all their own.

The Jazz Council (above) will be joined by Louise n’ha Ruby for a concert next week.

A graduate of Selkirk College’s professional music program in Nelson, where she focused on jazz, Louise n’ha Ruby caught the acting and singing bug with her first appearance on stage at age six. Throughout seven years of classical studies, she learned to focus on a lovely melodic line. Eventually, her emphasis shifted from form to content, and she began to apply her skills to a wide variety of musical styles, embarking on a life-long search for an ever-changing fusion of music, lyrics and arrangements. Whether she is filling a hall with an

impassioned rendition of Willie Dixon’s Built for Comfort or delighting her audience with her saucy delivery of Betsy Rose’s Coming Into My Years, n’ha Ruby’s loving attention to detail captivates audiences and leaves them sighing for more. Tickets to the Feb. 10 performance are $15 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books and Black Bear Books, or $18 at the door — and admission includes a scrumptious dessert. The doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8. For more information, visit www.snoringsasquatch.com or call 1-877-264-8543.

Riding program hosting Art Trot Affordable housing needed for valley

CRESTON AND DISTRICT SOCIETY FOR COMMUNITY LIVING

The Creston and District Society for Community Living’s Therapeutic Riding Program is very grateful for all the support it receives from the Creston Valley community. Its latest fundraiser, a potluck lunch, was held in early December to raise funds to purchase Emma the horse — $1,500 was needed to top up the $2,000 in donations received from the Creston and District Credit Union, the Creston Valley Gleaners Society and Lyn Kistner. Donations came into the office, even before the event was held. On the day of the event, people trickled in early to drop off donations. Emma was brushed, polished and shone with Christmas ribbons in her mane and forelock, ready to greet her guests at noon. She was not disappointed! Riders, volunteers and supporters of the program stopped by for lunch and to generously give to Emma. In all, $5,036 was raised, thanks to the generosity of so many people. As Emma’s purchase price was only $3,500, a reserve fund has been created to help keep her well fed and cared for in the year to come. Earlier in 2011, the Therapeutic Riding Program received grants from the Creston-Kootenay Foundation, the Columbia Basin Trust community initiatives grants (Town of Creston) and the Knights of Columbus. These grants were used to upgrade fencing along the south perimeter and the riding area at the entrance. The old, rotting post, barbed and page wire fence along the back was replaced with sturdy post and rails. The

electric tape fence along the riding area at the entrance was replaced with post and rail fencing and hazards were also safely fenced off. The project was completed successfully thanks to the volunteer efforts of Alex Nilsson and Terje Munkerud. The fences look great and make the facility so much safer. The next big fundraiser for the program is the second annual Art Trot, a silent art auction, to be held on Feb. 10 and 11 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Sunshine Room at the Creston and District Community Complex. Works of donated art will be auctioned off during this twoday event. Forty beautiful pieces have already been donated, including one-ofa-kind pieces by local artists. Everyone is

welcome to attend the opening night reception on Feb. 10 from 5-7 p.m. Those involved would like to extend their appreciation to everyone for supporting this awesome program. Fundraising and donations play a huge part in keeping the rider fees low. The annual newsletter acknowledges all of these generous people and organizations. The newsletter may be viewed online at cdscl.com/trp_newsletter_current.htm. “In the matter of family housing, the lack of dedicated and affordable family housing in the Creston area should be the highest concern for the community.” So says Creston Valley Affordable Housing Needs Update, a report prepared for the Creston Valley Community Housing Society (CVCHS) by Alan B. Campbell of Penticton-based Casita Consulting Ltd. The report is called an update because, since data from the 2010 census is not yet available, Campbell had to use three other sources as a basis for his survey. One is the 2008 needs survey report done for the CVCHS by Kootenay Employment Services (KES). Another is the Columbia Basin Trust’s 2008 State of the Basin Report, and the third is Affordable Housing Assessment and Strategic Planning: The Columbia Basin and Boundary Regions, B.C., dated March 2009, by George Penfield, regional innovation chair (retired) at Selkirk College. Housing

From page 13 To supplement this material, Campbell got “interim updates from BC Statistics, Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) and the Interior Health Authority. He also contacted representatives of existing affordable housing operations in Creston and attended the open house sponsored by the CVCHS on July 6, 2011. There he distributed a questionnaire to gather perceptions on the need for affordable housing. This “led to several meaningful discussions about the current state of housing in Creston.

Local News

Campbell’s report discusses the need for all kinds of affordable housing, that is, for seniors, families and those with special needs. However, he emphasizes that at present, “Creston has no affordable, safe and secure family housing. He goes on to say, “Based on agency estimates and the Census 2006 data, it can be suggested that there is justification for between 30 up to 120 affordable family rental units for the Creston area. “Affordable, he notes, means that rent and utilities cost no more than 30 per cent of the tenants’ pre-tax income. But to be “acceptable, a housing unit must also be “adequate (free of mould and containing the “reasonably

Campbell points out that affordable housing that meets these criteria is not only essential for those families that need it if they are to have a decent, healthy standard of living. It is also, he notes, of benefit to the community as a whole. Studies have shown that families that move from living conditions that most of us would regard as intolerable into decent affordable housing benefit in many ways. For example, there is less stress and unhappiness in the household, the children usually do better in school and in most cases there is a reduction in

What’s more, says Campbell, Creston “needs to secure an affordable housing base for those people of working age in order to sustain the Creston community, and to encourage younger people of working age to move to Creston to staff the suppliers and service providers without whom the town and area will not prosper. The CVCHS has been canvassing ways and means of building a number of affordable family housing units in Creston. WILDSIGHT

Wildsight, an East Kootenay environmental organization, is asking for public feedback about their work and community involvement. “We're a grassroots environmental organization that works with communities and it's important to us to know what people think, said regional Wildsight chair Juri Peepre. The organization would like to hear from the public about what it is doing well, and what they could be doing better. To that end, it has created a survey online so area residents can share their thoughts and ideas about the organization. This year marks 25 years of the organization's conservation work in the East Kootenay. However, as Wildsight works for the environment, it does so by working with people and communities. “The environment can't speak for itself, said Peepre. “But people can and we want to hear what they have to say, what they think about our home place and what we can do better to help look after it. Wildsight has a short survey online for the public to fill out, with questions about what people think about the organization and opportunities for suggestions about what they can do better. The survey is available online at www.wildsightsurvey.com. Wildsight works locally, regionally and globally to protect biodiversity and encourage sustainable communities in Canada's Columbia and southern Rocky Mountain region. For more information, please visit www.wildsight.ca.

Nelson credit union donates to memorial scholarship fund BY LARRY BRIERLEY Creston-Kootenay Foundation

Two years ago, the Salviulo family of Riondel undertook to establish a scholarship fund. The scholarship is for any male or female of the east or west Kootenay enrolled in the College of the Rockies fire certificate training course. Their son, Brandon, was a volunteer with the Riondel Fire Department. His aspiration to be a firefighter was terminated when he was killed in an ATV rollover while working on a fundraiser

for his fire department. Brandon’s parents knew the expense involved for any person attending the fire certificate course. If their son could not participate, they wanted in their modest way to assist the participation of someone else’s child. They established an in-perpetuity fund providing an annual scholarship of $1,000. In the fall of 2011, the Salviulo family raised $11,000 from organized events for the Brandon Salviulo Memorial Scholarship. Imagine, if you will, the sheer hard work done by a small family to organize

friends, relatives, a community and willing businesses and staff for a weekend of fun activities — bingo, a silent auction, mixed slow pitch, 18-hole scramble golf tournament, a four-on-four shinny hockey tournament and a children’s playground. In December, the Nelson and District Credit Union came forward with a further contribution of $15,000 for the scholarship. The Creston-Kootenay Foundation, which administers the fund, appreciates the NDCU’s generous donation and support in our community and throughout the Kootenays.

It’s time for government to invest in schools, teachers and kids again.

Ecstasy-related deaths make drug use a gamble

BY DEAN NICHOLSON East Kootenay Addictions Services

In the past few months there have been an unusual number of ecstasy related deaths in B.C. and Alberta. Ecstasy has been a popular drug of choice for adolescents and young adults for many years. The East Kootenay Adolescent Drug Use surveys have shown that Ecstasy is the only substance to have a steady increase in use in the East Kootenay from 2005 to 2011, going from 4.7 per cent of youth reporting lifetime use in 2005 to 8.7 per cent in 2011. 16 per cent of Grade 12 students in the East Kootenay have used Ecstasy at least once. Ecstasy, or MDMA (methylenedioxymeth-amphetamine), is a chemical in the amphetamine group, and is related to other amphetamines such as Ritalin, Dexedrine or crystal methamphetamine (“crystal meth”). Sold as a pill or tablet, it is a stimulant that produces a sense of euphoria, increased energy, feelings of connectedness with others and has mild hallucinogenic properties. Ecstasy initially became popular as a “club drug” and would be used at all night dance parties or raves. In its pure form, ecstasy is relatively non-toxic in low doses. Death was uncommon and would occur when users became dehydrated or overheated from excessive exertion, or as a result of an extreme negative reaction to the chemical. One of the key concerns with ecstasy use is that the user has no way of know-

ing the purity of what they are buying. RCMP analyses of seized drugs sold as ecstasy in B.C. show that a very low percentage are actually pure ecstasy. Most drugs sold as ecstasy contain a variety of other psychoactive chemicals, and many contain no ecstasy at all. This makes use much riskier, as the user can never know exactly what drug they are getting or at what dosage. Because people can react differently to different drugs, a person who has had a non-problematic experience with what they thought was ecstasy one time may have a very negative and potentially lethal experience with the next batch of drug. This appears to be what happened in some of the recent Alberta and B.C. deaths. Another complicating factor is that some youth are now taking multiple doses of ecstasy at one time. We have had local youth telling us of taking seven or more “hits” of ecstasy over the course of an evening. Increasing the dosages increases the risks. This, coupled with the uncertainty of what is actually in the pills being taken, makes any ecstasy use a real gamble. Furthermore, ecstasy is a drug that people can become addicted to. There is also evidence of persistent mood and thought disorders as a result of regular use, even after people having stopped using. If anyone has questions about ecstasy or any other drugs, please contact the local East Kootenay Addiction Service office at 250-428-5547 or 1-877-489-4344.

T-Cats lose two on road BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

The Creston Valley Thunder Cats were supposed to play three games on a weekend road trip, but the closure of the highway to Golden prevented the third game on Sunday. That, combined with players under the weather, resulted in no wins for Creston’s Kootenay International Junior Hockey League team. “We’re definitely getting banged up,” said head coach Brent Heaven. “Three or four on the road trip were sick, and we had a few injuries.” The road trip started with a visit to the Revelstoke Grizzlies, a game that the Thunder Cats lost 7-5. “It was definitely a back-and-forth battle between two good teams,” said Heaven. The Grizzlies scored once in the first period and twice partway through the second, before Thunder Cat Darcy Flaherty, assisted by brother Brock and Jaiden Ward, scored their first goal at 4:40. The Grizzlies followed that at 1:31, and Trevor Forward brought the score to 3-2 with a goal at 0:17. The Thunder Cats started the thirdperiod scoring with a goal by Brandon Formosa. After two more Grizzlies goals — one of them the game-winner — Scott Swiston and Mark Ferguson scored, before the Grizzlies finished the game with an empty-netter with 1:06 left. “It was definitely an entertaining game for the fans,” said Heaven. “But it was disappointing we came up on the losing end of it.”

On Saturday, the Thunder Cats visited the North Okanagan Knights, losing 4-0. “It was a tough game,” said Heaven. “We couldn’t seem to get any bounces. We hit a post early and North Okanagan got a lead on us.” The Armstrong team scored once in both the first and second periods, and twice in the third, once on a power play and once on an empty net. “It was a tough way to go on the road, but that’s the break sometimes,” said Heaven. This weekend, the Thunder Cats visit the Columbia Valley Rockies on Friday, and then host them on Saturday. The Rockies are at the bottom of the KIJHL’s Eddie Mountain Division, with seven points, well behind the third-place Thunder Cats, who have 54. “Hopefully, we can come out this weekend and put our best foot forward,” said Heaven. “The thing now is to prepare for the playoffs and a good long playoff run.” •On Jan. 24 (after press time for last week’s Advance), the Thunder Cats visited the Golden Rockets, earning a 5-4overtime win. Thunder Cat Trevor Forward scored the game’s first goal with three minutes left in the first period. The second period started with two power-play goals by the Rockets, and two from the Thunder Cats, one by Flaherty (shorthanded) and one by Andrew Hodder (power-play). In the third period, two more Rockets goals and a power-play goal by Thunder Cats Jovi Fabbri at 2:04 tied the score and sent the game into a scoreless overtime. Fourteen seconds into a second overtime, Fabbri scored the game-winner.
