LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends of the Crested Butte Music Festival, Thank you for taking the time to explore the exciting lineup of performances featured during our 20th anniversary season. We have come a long way from presenting a few dedicated local musicians back in 1995, to today, when we will showcase over 100 world-class artists in such varied genres as chamber, opera, symphony, folk, contemporary and gypsy jazz. We invite you to join us for the thrill of live performance, where audience and musicians participate in the
wonder of sharing the same time and space. And let’s talk about that space: we are delighted to bring to you, all the way from Europe, the fabulous Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace. Situated dramatically across from our magnificent Butte, this new venue will be the first time in our 20-year history that we will have a single home for our main stage performances. Highlights of this special season are many. We welcome the return of the brilliant crossover violinist Charles Yang for three performances, the superb American and JACK string quartets, the terrific soul band Eufórquestra, and our unrivalled
line-up of gypsy jazz superstars, including Ben Powell, Olli Soikkeli, Frank Vignola and more. Newcomers include the elegant guitarist Celino Romero, the outgoing singersongwriter team The Mastersons, the soulful Indie group T Sisters, and the tremendously talented International Contemporary Ensemble. Our opera this year is Puccini’s La bohème, one of the world’s most popular operas, in a thrilling new production by Emma Griffin. This summer also marks the return of our nationally acclaimed educational programs. We are proud to continue our Opera Studio, a 5-week intensive
training experience for exceptionally talented young opera singers, and two camps for younger musicians, the 5-day bluegrass Swallow Hill Kid’s Camp (ages 7-14) and the 3-week Opera Children’s Chorus (ages 8-18). Our newly expanded week long Frank Vignola Guitar Camp will once again inspire musicians, young and old, from around the world. All these wonderful performances and educational opportunities would not be possible without the support of you, our very special patrons. Thanks to your ongoing generosity, we can present artists of such exceptional quality and range, since
ticket sales only cover a fraction of our programming costs. I invite you to contribute to our 20th anniversary fund this year—with your support, we can continue to present the best in music in our shared corner of paradise for years to come. Thanks again for celebrating our 20th anniversary season with us. I look forward to seeing you often! Yours sincerely, Kathy King
President of the Board of Directors

CABARET BLEU: THE MADMEN OF BROADWAY In the 1950’s, Broadway musicals were a major part of American popular culture. A post-war booming economy, public demand and abundant creative talent kept Broadway—and theatergoers—humming. The resulting musicals of that decade remain at the very core of musical theater repertory. Composers and lyricists Frank Loesser, Richard Adler, Jerry Ross and Meredith Willson gave us “Guys and Dolls,” “The Music Man,” “The Most Happy Fella,” “Pajama Game,” “Damn Yankees” and “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” Join us as our Studio Artists celebrate these popular and brilliant works of musical theater. FESTIVAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA FEATURING CHARLES YANG AND CONDUCTOR MICHAEL STERN Program: Georges Bizet Symphony No. 1, C major I. Allegro vivo II. Andante. Adagio III. Allegro vivace IV. Finale. Allegro vivace Sergei Prokofiev “Classical Symphony” op. 25 (Symphony No. 1) I. Allegro con brio II. Larghetto III. Gavotte. Non troppo allegro IV. Finale. Molto vivace Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Concerto for Violin, op.64, E minor I. Allegro molto appassionato II. Andante III. Allegretto non troppo – Allegro molto vivace THURSDAY, JULY 14, 2016 7:30 PM MT. CRESTED BUTTE MIRROR PALACE TICKETS: $45+ KIDS GO FREE PRE-SHOW DINNER AVAILABLE
Program Notes: At the tender age of 17, Georges Bizet wrote his Symphony No.1 during his studies under the influence of Charles Gounod at the Conservatoire de Paris. It was never performed during his lifetime and Bizet showed no interest in having it performed. After his death in 1875, his widow took the manuscript to the Conservatory library where, upon its discovery in 1933 by one of Bizet’s biographers, it was performed for the first time in 1935, 60 years after Bizet’s death. Written in 1917, Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No.1 is considered one of the first neo-classical compositions, hence its anachronistic “Classical” moniker. It is especially intriguing given Prokofiev’s position as a leading composer of the Russian avant-garde movement in the early twentieth century. It loosely mimics the style of classical-era (17751825) composer Joseph Haydn. Since its premiere in 1918, the symphony has become one of Prokofiev’s most beloved works. Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor is his last large orchestral work and is an essential piece of the violin repertoire. It is one of the most popular and frequently performed violin concertos of all time. The work itself was one of the foremost violin concertos of the Romantic era and was influential on many other composers.

TIME SPANS
TIME SPANS, a collaboration between the Crested Butte Music Festival and the Earle Brown Music Foundation, is created in the spirit of the late American composer Earle Brown (19262002).

All TIME SPANS programs were curated by TIME SPANS Artistic Director Thomas Fichter.
Earle Brown was a major force in contemporary music and a leading composer of the American avant-garde since the 1950’s. His influence on the avant-garde community was philosophical as well as tangible and practical. His conducting techniques and experiments with “time notation,” improvisation, and open-form compositional structure have become part of contemporary compositional usage. Earle Brown generously fostered new works by his fellow composers both as Director of the Fromm Weeks of New Music in Aspen (1985-1990) as well as the producer of his legendary recording project, the Contemporary Sound Series (1960-1973). Open minded and always interested in a broad range of aesthetic expressions, Brown looked for important trends in contemporary music.
TIME SPANS: JACK QUARTET - THE WIND IN HIGH PLACES Returning for their second year, the JACK Quartet includes violinists Christopher Otto and Ari Streisfeld, violist John Pickford Richards and cellist Kevin McFarland. Devoted to the commissioning and performance of new works, JACK is the recipient of numerous awards for their dynamic programming, championship of contemporary works, and fine musicianship.

TIME SPANS: (ICE) INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ENSEMBLE - LA DOLCE MORTE The Crested Butte Music Festival and the Earl Brown Music Foundation are proud to present La Dolce Morte, a monodrama on poems by Michelangelo. Composed by Suzanne Farrin for the renowned ICE ensemble and the phenomenal countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, the piece had an acclaimed world premiere on April 1, 2016 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Both ICE and Mr. Costanzo will be on hand to recreate the piece for this must-see performance in Crested Butte. Suzanne Farrin writes in her “Notes on the Program”: “In 1532 Michelangelo met the young nobleman Tommaso dei Cavalieri. Though the details of their relationship are unknown, we know that the meeting inspired the artist to compose intense poetry that deals with the joy and complexity of carnal desire and spiritual fulfillment.” Several of the poems set to music by Farrin are from this collection, full of admiration, but also jealousy, pain, longing, desire and guilt. Staging and lighting for the evening will be directed by Doug Fitch, a polymath American artist and director. In New York City he is well known for his inventive stage work for concerts with the New York Philharmonic as the founder of “Giants are Small.”

EXPERIENCE THE ONLY SPIEGELTENT IN COLORADO!
ABOUT THE MT. CRESTED BUTTE MIRROR PALACE Delightful, nostalgic and elegant, spiegeltents are meticulously handcrafted structures originally used as traveling dance halls at the turn of the twentieth century in Europe. Flemish for “tent with mirrors,” spiegeltents feature luxurious amenities such as stained glass windows, velvet ceilings, and cozy booths around the perimeter of the inside for elevated seating. In its past iterations as a haven for local nightlife, the numerous mirrors were used to facilitate discreet eye contact between visitors. 54
There are only a limited number of these tents left in the world, each with its own distinct history. Coming to Crested Butte this summer is The Salon Victoria, originally built in the 1930s by the Klessens family and called the ‘Nova Danssalon.’ The Klessens family has a long tradition with spiegeltents, dating back four generations. The tent was severely damaged in the early 1990s, so the family decided to rebuild it into the “biggest and most beautiful of the world”. They renamed it Victoria in
honor of their victory over the hardship. This spiegeltent then traveled all over the world and spent ten years in South Africa. After a complete maintenance and restoration, the Victoria will be coming to America for the first time as CBMF’s Mt. Crested Butte Mirror Palace. Today, these extraordinarily elegant venues seamlessly combine old world charm and nostalgia with the modern demand for unique, one-of-a-kind experiences.
