Elison Alcovendez is a Filipino American Poet, who currently lives in Sacramento, California, USA.

Elison talks about what drew him to poetry

”I actually came to poetry later in my writing life. I’m more of a prose writer, but as life started catching up to me, and I had less time, I found it harder to write longer form work. So I started writing flash fiction, which led to prose poetry, which eventually led to poetry My friend introduced me to the Instagram writing community, and I loved how poets were using the medium, and a necessary economy of words, to make connections with other human beings.“

ABOUTTHEPOET

You are quite vocal about the Instagram algorithm and it’s detriments to writers, what do you feel needs to change?

My main tip is to not try and chase “solving the algorithm ” Focus on quality content, content your passionate about, and try and make real connections with other writers and artists I’ve noticed that people who are good about embracing and empowering the community often have the best engagement. Also, it’s important to step out of our comfort zones That might mean reels, it might mean lives, it might mean collaborating with others, who knows. Everyone and everything are constantly evolving, and we must, too

I know Instagram is a business, and poets and writers might only be a very small segment of their base, so I understand that we might be a community left behind in their desire to catch up to TikTok and stay relevant So as much as I’d like Instagram to change back to how it was before, I don’t think that is going to happen So I really think writers will either need to embrace the idea of multimedia, find another outlet/medium, or find a way to accept the way that Instagram is changing

What tips can you give writers on Instagram concerning posting and engagement?

A STORY IN SIX WORDS A Story in Six Words is exactly what you think it is. Just in case you are not thinking what I think you are thinking, let me share a few 6 word stories I found on Instagram robertcozziauthor He only fell in love once Robert Cozzi continues to be a source of inspiration to writers on Instagram. Arguably, he has been the reason why many writers try to challenge themselves to participate in the six word story challenge. ToRobertCozzi Thank you for all your contributions to the Poetry Community. We love and wish you continuous success in everything that you do.
