I
n what can be described as a stunning upset, a team of junior secondary school girls (Adaeze Onuigbo; Okoye Vivian; Jessica Osita; Nwabuaku Ossai; Promise Nnalue; and Miracle Igboke) from Anambra state defeated teams from the US, Spain, Turkey, Uzbekistan and China to win the 2018 Technovation World Pitch junior division in San Francisco, USA. Every year, Technovation invites teams of girls from all around the world to learn and apply the skills needed to solve real-world problems through technology. The 2018 edition registered over 19,000 girls globally
to build apps and start businesses solving problems in their communities. Team Save-A-Soul, developed a mobile application called ‘FDDetector’ to tackle the problem of fake pharmaceutical products in Nigeria with Mrs Uchenna OnwuamaegbuUgwu, as their mentor. The app leverages a drug’s barcode to verify its authenticity and expiration date. Save A Soul will also partner with NAFDAC (National Agency for Food & Drug Administration and Control), the agency responsible for regulating drugs in Nigeria.
