"What is culture? What is Creative Expo?" At the beginning of the interview, the curator Pang Wang asked the questions that would be a bit difficult to answer for anybody. We can count the brilliant works in these years by InFormat Design which is under his command, including Taipei Design and City Exhibition, OCTAPHILOSOPHY™, and UP TO 3742 Taiwan On the Top of the Ridge. Whenever people enter the exhibition hall, the ingenious route arrangement and the manner of demonstration make the visitors understand tacitly and enter the design journey of the team’s attentive arrangement when they walk around. SD: We explode in the culture? Please talk about the concept and the key vision of this curating.

planning is that we will arrange 4 issue exhibition areas collocating with 6 guided reading and conversation. In the space, we will invite 3 more artists to re-annotate the issues. During the exhibition dates, we will set

up limited selected goods stores. We will invite the owner of these stores

to talk about the thoughts behind selecting the products. About the route

arrangement of the exhibition, we already have some concrete ideas taking shape. When the ideas are mature enough, I will share with you.

SD:何謂「我們在文化裡爆炸」?請與我們談談此次策展的概念與主視覺。

格子:提到臺灣文博會,比較會直接聯想到的是「商展」,這次在策劃發想時我們希望將展覽背後最重要的元素「文化」拿出來檢視,找出社 會議題,引起討論。 我們詮釋「文化」是一種人民面對社會環境與現實的反應動作,策展主題裡提到的「我們」,代表了年輕世代對於改變與創新的渴望,在集 體行動的過程裡為社會帶來新的爆炸能量,因此在設計主視覺的時候,表現上並非強調引爆後的瞬間,而是著重在因爆炸帶起的波瀾,透過 Typography字型設計的手法,想要強調文化裡的爆炸不只是轟轟烈烈地一瞬間,更重要的是關於不同領域的文化、地方、參與者在新的動能 匯聚、爆炸之後所帶來的迴盪,因為對身處的現況有感而開始的行動,就是對更好生活的積極實踐。Cultural explosion for better life,是 策展時我們持續思考的概念與設計方法。

SD:「議題式策展」,這個想法是如何企劃形成的? 格子:策劃臺灣文博會主題館時,希望能透過展覽拋出議題,開啟想像與討論的空間,藉由討論去讓大家想想,我們還能再多做點什麼? 文化很重要的事情在於創造意義,它並非全然以循序漸進方式進行,但很多時候是透過偶發的事件引起的串聯,因為偶發事件是很真誠的,某 些人對於某些事很有感覺,這種群體有感的狀態,一旦經過偶發事件的導引,就會點燃改變的動能。

身為策展人,同時也是設計師,主題館展覽的呈現將不僅止於是器物展示,而更著重在一種狀態的陳述。透過議題設定的方式,我們邀請各領

域不同的專家進來,從他們角度針對台灣發生的現況提出看法、挑戰、甚至是挑逗,開啟一座對話空間讓大眾有感覺,想像新的可能、想要行 動,像是一擊 punch打到心裏一樣。 舉例來說,一想到鐵路便當你腦中會想到什麼?可能首先想到會是鐵製的便當盒,或是飛機木製作的外盒,裡面的菜色是濕濕的滷肉、酸菜、 醃蘿蔔…我們能想到的包裝與內容都很侷限,便當有沒有可能是與地方文化有更深連結? 譬如西螺盛產醬油,那裡的鐵路便當就會附上一小瓶醬油配著飯菜來吃,一個有地方印象的便當,應該是內容大於形式,脈絡與文化大於承載 物,我們想做的是去拋出這種大家多半都有接觸過、曾經想過會有共鳴的議題,引起大眾的對話。

SD:雖然展覽內容還在策劃中,可否用想像力帶我們一窺即將到來的展場空間? 格 子 : 主 展 館 的 位 置 將 會 設 於 華 山 展 區 紅 磚 六 合 院 的 西 1 與 西 2 館 。 目 前 規 劃 將 會 安 排搭 配 6 組 導 讀 對 談 , 4 組 議 題 展 區 , 展 覽 期 間 會 設 立 選 品 概念店,請選品店主談談這些挑選臺灣選品背後的想法。展覽的動線安排上我們已經有一些具體想法成形中,等到成熟一些再來與大家分享。

The studio is consisted of two girls who are passionate about mental works with distinctive styles and personalities. After MFA degree, they chose two begin from a small house in the countryside of Tainan to produce handcraft with warm touch.

The chandelier is inspired by the structure of the plant. From the appearance to the structure, the chandelier is made of cooper, which gives a warm finished. The Edison bulb warms up the space demonstrating the different qualities of visual tension.

松山展區 松山展區內的「NEXT」專區為臺灣文博會與經濟部工業局共同合作,於「臺灣設計產業翱翔計畫」中選拔出 多個具有發展潛力的國內優質設計品牌聯合展出,透過臺灣文博會的國際化舞台,扶植臺灣文創新興世代行 銷全球!專區今年集結了美學、科技和自然素材的跨界應用,將人們習以為常的日常用品賦予新的形象,創 作出顛覆我們想像的設計作品。此趨勢反映出臺灣設計新世代極欲將設計意念滲入至生活中各個角落的渴望 與企圖心,引領人們直視設計,不再是生活的附屬品,而是必需品。

Seeing the moon from a wood window, used wire mesh to re-create this blurred image of the moon. This work can be used as a lighting device or simply a decoration. “INTERLACED” can also be used as a decorative screen to divide the vision with an effect of mixed layers. With various arrangements, “INTERLACED” can create an atmosphere for its users to experience the magic of the light.

The “NEXT” area in Songshan exhibition area is collaborated by Creative EXPO Taiwan and Industrial Development Bureau of Ministry of Economic Affairs; they selected many domestic high quality design brands in “Taiwan Design Industry Hovering Project” to participate in the joint exhibition. Through the internationalized platform of Creative Expo Taiwan, they would like to foster the new generation in the cultural and creative industries in Taiwan to sell to the whole world! This year the exclusive area combines the transboundary application of aesthetics, technology and natural materials, giving the daily necessities that people are used to a new image and creating design works that overturn our imagination. This trend reflects the desire and ambition that the new design generation in Taiwan wants to penetrate the design ideas into every corner in our life, leading people look straight at the design. The design is no longer an accessory in our life but a necessity.

highlight of Taipei Expo Park Expo Dome 爭艷展區 今年「Talent 100」專區邀請來自臺灣與海外新銳創作家參與盛會,包含插畫、漫畫、動畫、印花設計、遊戲 創作、公仔六個類別,須經由媒體、社群網路平台、公協會及駐臺辦事處等單位推薦,主辦單位將選出 70位臺 灣潛力創作者,及 30位分別來自泰國、馬來西亞、菲律賓、越南、新加坡、澳門、香港、日本、韓國、斯洛伐克、 比利時、俄羅斯等海外藝術家,這 100位的創作家將會是花博爭艷館的亮點之一。 This year's "Talent 100" exhibition will continually be held in the Expo Dome, which will invite participants from Taiwan and oversea to participate in the exhibition, including illustrators, cartoonists, animators, printing designers, game creators, and figurine creators. The talents will have to be recommended by media, social networking platforms, public associations , and international representatives in Taiwan. The invited creators will be selected 70 Taiwanese potential creators and 30 highlight foreign creators from Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Macao, HongKong, Japan, Korea, Slovak, Belgium, Russia...etc. All the Talent100 will be one of the highlights in this exhibition.

Geramain’s paintings are the result of these two characteristics, as well as the mix between his Belgian origin and the East Asian painting style he discovered in Taiwan.

胖胖蕉的靈感來自日常生活體驗,像愛 吃美食但吃太多又有罪惡感,雖然不時 陷入這樣的掙扎,但他都能帶來開心, 並用哈哈大笑做結尾。

Continuously inspired by the feeling about life, she draws the moment that is touching, happy or sad to let people whoever feeling the same know that they are not alone.

Pang Pang Jiao's inspiration comes from his daily experiences. For example, he loves to eat delicious food; but after eating too much, he also feels very guilty about it.

In 2016, inBlooom co-brands with Rody, a Japanese brand, to present a series of products focusing on the style of "mature and adorable" for adults. In this series, you can find handkerchief, bag, hat, pillow...and other practical living sundries and textile furnishings. All products with Rody's unique prints that haven't been introduced to Taiwanese customers are designed by inBlooom, made and developed in Taiwan.

Q:請您簡單跟我們介紹一下您的創業經歷?

I am BANANA MONKEY! I am not really into striking a different tune. I just feel it is boring to be like anyone else. I love to curve up the corners of my mouth and be funny. Sometimes I look like baddy and sometimes I am childlike cute. I am fashion obsessive and neurotic. As you know, I insist on mix & match, and I am more or less a dandy. I like to wear a hat when I go out. I think, you know, this makes me adultlike!

A:我在大二時開設了一個網站,主要是賺廣告費用。大三去了 日本早稻田大學當交換學生,認識一些廠商。大學畢業時,就成 立了一間公司 Audio Cubes,主要進口日本電器到美國與歐洲, 當 時 年 營 業 額 差 不 多 2 0 0 萬 美 金 ,利 潤 還 不 錯 。後 來 在 2 0 0 6 年 , 我正式在紐約開了實體店鋪「AC Gears」到現在。

Q:您覺得臺灣創意產業現在面臨的最大問題與困難在哪裡?

A:我有一種恨鐵不成鋼的感覺,因為它很強,但也很弱。為什 麼呢?它的能力很強,但表達的方式很弱。臺灣需要一種衝勁, 除了把原來有的東西鞏固好之外,還要有出去闖的競爭力。尤其 文化創意產業本來就是一個比較困難的產業,因為它不是必需 品,這些品牌必須積極去了解國外的市場,這些市場的缺口在 哪?才能製作出可以填補這個缺口的產品。

Q:對於今年的臺灣文博會,您有什麼建議? 成立於 2011年,為全臺插畫家人數最多之插畫經紀公司,逾 60位一線及新秀,創作遍 及臺、港、中國、馬來西亞,合作領域跨足各產業,眾多作品商品化、書籍化進行中! Founded in 2011, STUNDEN ILLUSTRATION AGENCY is a leading international illustration agency. We represent over 60 talents from Asia with experience spanning advertising, pattern design, character design, editorial, CG, animation, packaging, publishing to name a few.

A:首先,我覺得國際化很重要,爭取更多全球買家進來。透過 流程便利化、資訊全球化,讓臺灣文博會成為真正有創意的博覽 會。第二,我覺得要有願景,臺灣是一塊璞玉,很有潛力,但必 須要找到一個琢磨它的方式,讓它變得更強,所以政府必須找到 一個方式,吸引更多國外買家進來。

Q: Please briefly introduce your entrepreneurship experience.

A: I started a website in the sophomore year. The main purpose was to earn the advertisement expenses. In my junior year, I went on exchange to Waseda University in Japan and got to know some

firms. When I graduated from the university, I founded a company, Audio Cubes, mainly importing the electrical equipment to the US and Europe. The annual revenue then was about 2 million US dollars; the profits were not bad. Later in 2006, I officially opened up the physical store “AC Gears” in New York until now.

Q: Do you think what is the biggest problem and difficulty the creative industry in Taiwan is facing?

A: I have a feeling of “setting a high demand on it in the hope that it will improve” because it is very strong but at the same time it is very weak too. Why so? Its ability is really strong, but the way of expressing is weak. Taiwan needs momentum. It has to consolidate the things it already has. Taiwan's brands have to go out to explore. Above all, cultural and creative industry is a more difficult industry by nature because it is not a necessity. These brands should actively try to know the foreign markets. Where is the gap in these markets? By doing so, they can produce the products that fill the gap.

Q: For the Creative Expo Taiwan this year, do you have any suggestions?

A: Firstly, I think internationalization is very important. We should strive for more global buyers to come in. Through the facilitation of the process and globalization of information, we can make Creative EXPO become a truly creative exposition. Secondly, I think we should have a vision. Taiwan is a diamond in the rough. It has a lot of potential but we need to find a way to carve and polish it to make it stronger. Therefore, the government has to seek for a way to attract more foreign buyers.

Kohn Liu 2001年畢業於美國波士頓塔夫茨大學,Kohn Liu於同年創辦了 Audio Cubes,銷售高端音響設備。2006 年在紐約開設 AC Gears實體店鋪,成為紐約時報推薦的 10大 3C產品商店,品牌代理經驗長達 16年。 Having graduated from Tufts University in Boston in 2001, Kohn Liu founded Audio Cubes in the same year, selling high-end audio equipment. In 2006, he opened up the physical store AC Gears in New York, which became one of the top 10 3C product stores recommended by New York Times. His agency experience has been as long as 16 years.

新企劃! Q:什麼樣的機會讓您進入授權這個領域? A:以前在麥當勞工作時,因為負責整個區域的行銷和活動執行,與迪士尼有很 多合作。後來,迪士尼在臺灣剛要起步,找我過去幫忙。當時很多制度都還沒 建 立 ,加 上 我 喜 歡 思 考 、接 觸 客 戶 、辦 活 動 ,所 以 我 什 麼 事 情 都 去 嘗 試 、去 學 習 。 每次迪士尼有什麼訓練,我也總是第一批去參加的人員,在那段時間學習到很 多授權、品牌建構和品牌運營的專業。

Q:可以讓我們更清楚了解您現在做的事情有哪些嗎? A : 我 的 公 司 已 經 發 展1 9 年 了 , 早 就 從 純 粹 的 代 理 商 , 去 幫 品 牌 找 被 授 權 商 的 角 色,延伸到更多領域。在前端,我們幫品牌說故事給廠商聽,讓他們了解品牌 的價值、特徵、屬性、市場定位。同時我們也培養一些設計審核人才,他們能 解讀分析國外品牌的設計指南,哪些設計可以被使用在哪些地方。當廠商清楚 之後,我們還要統一這些廠商製作的風格,讓他們有一致性。等產品出來後, 再 代 表 這 些 品 牌 和 廠 商 去 找 通 路 。這 些 都 不 是 單 純 的 業 務 買 賣 ,而 是 品 牌 經 營 。

為了讓設計師及一般民眾能夠更深入了解工藝品的製程、技術特長與背後來 歷,2017臺灣文博會特別與日本著名工場開放日活動「燕三條 工場祭典」總 監 山 田 遊 ,合 作 企 劃 聯 合 臺 日 產 地 職 人 的 體 驗 活 動 「 工 藝 現 場 」。參 與 產 地 有 : 臺灣陶瓷知名產地「鶯歌」、日本刀刃金屬製品產地「燕三條」、日本銅器漆 器產地「高岡」。跨越國界,帶動產地與職人間交流,對於各方的創作與開發 必有助益。屆時,參與者更能一窺臺灣與日本在開發製造過程的不同,並深入 了解各地工藝品的故事與意義,體會三地共通「真心誠意」的職人精神。 In order to let designers and ordinary people get a better understanding of the producing process of handicrafts, special skills and the background, Creative Expo Taiwan 2017 especially collaborates with Yu Yamada, the director-general of the opening day activity "Yansantiao Worship Rite of Workshop"of a famous Japanese workshop, working together to plan an experiencing activity "Craft Site"combining Taiwanese and Japanese craftsmen of the place of the production. The places of the production that participate are: the famous place of producing ceramics in Taiwan "COCERA", the place of producing knives and metalwork in Japan "Tsubame-Sanjo", and the place of producing bronze ware and lacquerware in Japan "Takaoka" . Crossing the border between countries and driving the interaction between the place of production and the craftsmen must be helpful for each party's creation and development. When the time comes, the participants can see the differences in the process of development and production between Taiwan and Japan, dig deeper into the stories and meanings of the crafts from each place, and experience the "sincere" craftsmen's spirit shared by the three places. Q:您對今年的臺灣文博會有什麼期待與建議? A:首先,必須評選與支持更多更好的原創來參展。其次,便是邀請國際上重量 級 的 人 物 來 參 加 ,很 多 買 家 是 跟 著 這 些 人 而 來 ,主 動 積 極 地 在 官 網 上 發 佈 新 聞 , 吸引更多買家來參加。因為臺灣很小,所以我們要更主動、更有活力地去做, 才會讓人聽到我們的聲音。

Q: What kind of opportunity brought you into the area of authorization?

Wendy Chang

A: When I was working in McDonald’s before, I had many collaborations with Disneyland because I was in charge of the marketing and the execution of activities of the whole area. Afterwards, Disneyland was just about to start, and they asked me for help. At that time many systems had not been established. Besides, I like to think, be in touch with the clients, and organize activities, so I tried and learned anything. Whenever Disneyland had a training, I was always among the first group of people that attended. During that time, I learned a lot of professional knowledge about authorization, brand construction and brand operation.

Q: Could you let us know more about what things you are currently doing?

A: My company has developed for 19 years. Since long time ago, we had already moved on from being the role of a pure agency that helped a brand to find a licensee to more areas. At the onset, we tell the story to the firms for the brand to let them understand the brand’s value, characteristics, attributes and the market positioning. At the same time we train up some design review personnel. They are able to interpret and analyze the design guidelines of foreign brands as well as know where the design can be used. After the firms get clear on the situation, we still need to integrate the production styles of these firms to make them consistent. After the products come out, we then find the sales channels for these brands and firms. These are not pure business trades but brand management.

高岡製作銅器產業之歷史可遠溯至 400年前,至今高岡仍有許多傳承鑄 造技術的精良職人,以及協助職人展 業的銷商們,致力開發製造以及拓展 傳統工藝。

本活動為每年秋季於金屬加工盛 地 ——新 瀉 縣 燕 三 條 及 周 邊 地 區 舉 辦 之活動。帶領參與者參觀各式各樣的 KOUBA(「工場」日文發音),體

400 years ago, Copper industry in Takaoka began as a traditional crafts city. Passion for their craft has been continuing not only to making products but also advocating new ways of traditional craft.

Tsubame-Sanjo Factory Festival is an event that is held every autumn in the Tsubame-Sanjo area, Niigata prefecture - renowned for the producing area of metal processing technologies and materials – and in other areas nearby.There are a variety of factories visitors can visit inside the festival.

DanQing porcelain of Taiwan's wellknown ceramic brand "COCERA" is inherited from the older generation grandmother's memory; it adopts the ancient method of firing, whose color is green and elegant, representing the color of the heyday of ceramic in Taiwan.

Q: Do you have any expectation and suggestions for the Creative Expo Taiwan this year?

A: Firstly, we have to elect and support more better original works to attend the exposition. Secondly, we need to invite international heavyweights to participate in the exposition. Many buyers follow them. Actively release news on the official website to attract more buyers to join. 東京出身。曾任南青山選品名店 IDEE SHOP買家,2007年設立 method公司,以自由買家身份展開業務。目 前擔任 method inc.的負責人。從設計、時尚、藝術,到工藝、飲食等,method擅長操作各式跨領域活動, 與眾多品牌合作,以選品或企劃活動等方式協助品牌展店。

After having served in McDonald’s and Disneyland, Ruo-Ying Zhang founded “Impact Licensing Marketing Management Consulting Co., Ltd.” With the long-term professional knowledge in the field of authorization agency, she expanded the business to marketing, management, consulting, auditing, training, and so on. She has been cultivating the authorization profession for 24 years.

Born in Tokyo. After working as a buyer for IDEE SHOP in Minami-Aoyama, Yamada founded method in 2007 and began working as a freelance buyer shortly afterwards. He is currently a representative director of method inc. Through both buying and direction, method, inc. is active in a range of industries including design, fashion, food, art and craft.
