Tossi was found together with his brother Dimi in Skopelos where they were born near a dangerous road.

After their resque they travelled to Holland and they now live in the centre of Amterdam, near Anne Frank’s house, where they can safely stroll through the gardens and they are very happy with their new family.

The average cat sleeps 16-18 hours per day

Why do cats meow?

The reasons change as they grow from kittens into cats.

Kittens meow to their mothers when they’re hungry, cold, or scared. But once cats get older, they use other vocalizations -- such as yowling, hissing, and growling -to communicate with each other.

Meowing is reserved for their communications with people.

Calico Cats are almost always female

Why do cats meow?

The amount of meowing varies by breed and even cat.

Oriental breeds, especially Siamese cats, are known as great “talkers,” ... ... so anyone who doesn’t like meowing probably should steer clear of these breeds.

Mickey and Mirabelle, were both born on the street. Mickey was all alone, seeking for food in a bin and Mirabelle was dumped in a garden.

Because they were such good friends we did not want to seperate them.

We placed them up for adoption together and succesfully found a new home for the both of them. Since autumn 2017 they live in a wonderfull Dutch home where they are loved and cared for.

A group of kitttens is called a ‘kindle’; a group of adult cats is called a ‘clowder’ Despite what some people think, cats don’t like being alone a lot.

Cats often meow to initiate play, petting, or to get you to talk to them.

If you want to cut down on attention-seeking meows, stop responding when it happens.

Only give her attention when she’s quiet. If she starts to meow again, look or walk away. But don’t ignore your pet.

Spend quality time each day with her, playing, grooming, and talking to her.

A tired pet is a quieter pet.

Cats and kittens in Greece are often in need of food. In contrast to what people might think, there is not enough food that they can find themselves. They depend on volunteers that help them to survive. Our charity helps to provide local volunteers with food for the street- and shelter cats as much as we can.

Most cats are lactose intolerant and should not be given cow’s milk Some cats meow every time someone walks in the kitchen, hoping to get a bite. And many cats become very vocal when it gets close to their feeding times.

If this is your problem, don’t feed your cat when she cries.

Wait until she quiets to put down food, and don’t give her treats when she meows. If this doesn’t work, get an automatic feeder that opens at set times.

Now kitty will meow at the feeder and not you.

These two beautifull kittens live in the village of Petra, the island of Lesvos.

They are a typical example of some of the kittens we provide with food and care. Once they are a bit older, we will ofcourse sterilize them and help them to get a better life.

And who knows, we might find loving homes for them later.

A male cat is called a ‘Tom’ and a female cat is called a ‘Queen’

Many cats meow when their people come home, or even when they just meet t hem in the house.

This is a hard habit to break, but look at it as kitty saying she’s happy to see you.

Street cats in Greece often have the most amazing features and personalities. During the summer there are mostly visitors that feed them.

Specially when winter comes, they need more help to survive, and we try to help with food. One of the cats we feed is this lovely cat in Lesvos

Cats knead with their paws when they are happy

If your pet spends too many hours a day alone, think about getting a pet sitter to drop in during the day, or find other ways to enrich your pet’s life.

Put a bird feeder outside a window she can watch. Leave foraging toys out with food inside. Get her a kitty condo and rotate different toys that you leave out for play.

This intervention is important for female as well as male cats.

It gives the catpopulation in Greece a much better chances to survive and to remain healthy.

Cats cannot see in complete darkness, only at low light levels Cats that are experiencing stress often become more vocal.

A new pet or baby, a move or changes to the home, an illness or the loss of a loved one can turn your cat into a talker.

Try to discover what is stressing your pet and help her adjust to the change.

If that’s not possible, give your cat extra attention and quiet time to help soothe her.

In the period of 2010 untill 2016 we helped many street cats that live on the island Samos.

Oliver was found very ill and without his mummy.

He received a lot of tender loving care, got adopted and now lives a happy and healthy life in Holland, together with Ramses, another orphan saved from Samos island.

A female cat carries her kittens for about 58-65 days before they are born

Cats, just like people, can suffer from a form of mental confusion, or cognitive dysfunction, as they age.

They become disoriented and often cry plaintively for no apparent reason, especially at night.

A nightlight sometimes can help if your cat becomes disoriented at night, and veterinarians often can prescribe medications that help these symptoms.

White cats are especially vulnerable to the sun that shines a lot in Greece.

Ears, nose and eye lids are often affected and this can cause the development of cancer.

Daily sun block can help to prevend this, but the best option for these cats is to be adopted to a less sunny country.

This cat is still very shy and is fed by our local volunteers on Lesvos.

Cats can get tapeworm from eating mice

If your cat isn’t spayed or neutered, then you’re going to hear a lot more noise.

Females yowl when in heat, and males yowl when they smell a female in heat.

Both can be maddening to live with.

Getting your pet spayed or neutered will prevent this.

Cats have five toes on each front paw, but only four toes on each back paw

Some cats just seem to like to hear their own voices, while others seem to want to carry on a conversation with their owners.

If your cat is talking a little more than you’d like, try to figure out the cause first. Once you know the reason, you can then work to get your cat to meow less.

As small kittens Cartouche and her sister named ‘Dropje’ or Licorise, were saved from the streets of Santorin.

They are examples of some of the lucky cats that got a second chance in life.

Both were succesfully adopted. Beautiful Cartouche shows here the love that many cats have, for small boxes.

A cat’s whiskers aren’t just for show – they help cats detect objects and navigate in the dark Bringing home a new cat is much like adopting a human baby..

Before you bring your new cat or kitten home, there are a number of things you’ll need to do so your cat will feel like a family member rather than a visitor.

Prepare yourself a few days in advance to minimize stress for you and your cat on “homecoming day”. Provide a safe room for your cat where he can retreat and rest.

He may voluntarily choose to socialize with you and family members, but for now, let him decide whether to hide or mingle.

Billy and Bobbi are two adorable kittens that lived in a dangerous place in Lesvos.

Often we found them sleeping under cars against the warm rubber wheels.

Ofcourse we did not want anything bad to happen to them. Both were saved.

Now they are happy, healthy kittens and almost ready for their forever home.

Cats cannot taste anything sweet

Your new cat’s first veterinarian visit is of supreme importance. You’ll want to assure yourself of his good health, and get his vaccinations and testing for FIV and FeLV (if not already done by the adopting agency).

The diet a cat gets early in life will set the pace for his lifelong health and well-being.

Your knowledge of cat food ingredients will help ensure not only longevity but the quality of life. Although cats descend from desert creatures, fresh water is also essential to them, especially if they eat a dry food diet.

WHo WE ARE Greek Cat Care Foundation or in Dutch language ‘Stichting Kattenhulp Griekenland’ is an official registered non profit organisation, founded in the Netherlands that is active since the end of 2010 in helping and providing care for the numerous street cats in Greece.

Many street cats in Greece are struggling to survive. They live a very short, unhappy and dangerous life, become sick or get wounded, and are constantly in search for food and shelter for themselves and their babies.They desperatly need help. Our foundation rescues as many as we can, through our activities.

WHat we do Our charity supports projects and private initiatives in Greece, that work to help the street cats. In close contact with local volunteers, we help by: * Feeding & neutering of shelter cats and as many street cats as funds allow us. * Offering projects financial support to help cover vet costs for emergencies. * Contacting and convincing local & international vets to support our cause. * Searching and selecting motivated volunteers who are willing to help out. * Developing info-brochures that volunteers can use to raise awareness. * Educating tourists as well as local inhabitants, asking them to help & care. * Building intensive care units in cities and villages + providing the necessary medication to help sick or weak cats and kittens during their fysical recovery. * Supporting the establishment of good quality cat shelters where weak and or ill cats and kittens can be cured and cared for. * Arranging adoptions. We try to find loving homes for a limited number of them. These cats will be vaccinated, chipped, defleed and dewormed, and declared healthy by a vet and finally transported to their new owners.

One female cat and her offspring can multiply to no less then 5000 cats and kittens in just four years. Many of the new born cats and kittens, die a miserable death, and many ‘grown up’ or half grown up cats, also die of illnesses, weakness, or accidents. This is why it is of the most importance, to help to reduce the suffering, by neuterings of street cats.

WE NEED * MANPOWER. We are reaching out to vets & volunteers to please help us. * SPONSORING. For we need so much food, medicine, payment of vet bills. * STERILISATION OF CATS. One female cat and her offspring can multiply to no less then 5000 cats and kittens in just four years. * HELP FOR CATS IN EMERGENCIES. Life is hard for cats in Greece.

Illnesses, infections, wounds, infected eyes or blindness, broken bones, weakness and exhaustion are common. Many kittens are dumped in the garbage. PRAYER OF A STRAY Please send me somebody who’ll care, I’m tired of running, I’m sick with despair.

My body is aching, it’s so racked with pain, And I pray as I run in the rain, That someone will love me and give me a home, A warm cozy bed to call my own.

My last owner neglected me and chased me away, To rummage in garbage and live as a stray.

But now I’m tired, hungry and cold, And I’m so afraid that I’ll never grow old.

They’ve chased me with sticks and hit me with stones, While I run in the streets just looking for bones.

I’m not really bad, please help if you can, For I have become just a “victim of man” I’m wormy and I’m ridden with fleas, And all I want is an owner to please.

If you find one for me, I’ll try to be good, I won’t run away and I’ll do as I should.

I don’t think I’ll make it too long on my own, Cause I’m getting weak and I’m so all alone.

Each night as I sleep in the bushes I cry, Cause I’m so afraid that I’m gonna die.

I’ve got so much love and devotion to give, That I should be given a new chance to live.
