Hello Creamsters! Welcome to the month of love and friendship, where between flowers and chocolates, we celebrate the launch of our 53rd edition! We are back in the full swing of things this year, and we are happy to share a very special article where we had the opportunity to interview three incredible women that deserve our utter admiration and respect. Their work as firefighters in our city is outstanding. We encourage you to read this article to learn a little more about these three heroes. Another thing that we like to do every February is highlight the beauty of life, and what better way to do that than by celebrating the love of our four featured couples. They opened the doors to their homes and shared a few secrets that we are sure you all will adore.

It’s now become a habit for us to escape to Mexico City to have a super fasion photo session. On this trip, we also had the chance to meet up with Victor Hugo in San Miguel de Allende who took us on a “glamping” trip with a few of his friends! Get to know this new term that combines the concept of camping with a glamorous lifestyle. Sounds interesting, right? We thought so! And we had so much fun doing this photoshoot in the wonderful pueblo mágico.

joe arciniega, michelle cook, victor hugo garcía, elyssa canales-villarreal, monica delgado and christian hachar.

I’m happy to greet all our readers, but I am also already ridden with anxiety as we work on our April edition! There are a lot of surprises to come! Thank you to all our followers, readers, friends and sponsors!

Big hug,

Fernando De Haro

Repeat Offender It’s 2019! Welcome new year: same you and new outfit — or should I say same outfit?

Y

ou know what I want this year? Easy. One less thing to think about. Although it’s hard when you like the bling and the statement piece. I also, deep down inside, want to wear the same thing everyday. I feel nostalgic for that “school girl coming home and never taking off her school uniform, even though her mom is demanding that it needed to be washed” vibe. In honor of that little girl and my strive to pile-on-it-all tendencies, I gathered a list of pieces for this article of what will be on my on-repeat list.

My list of basics: 1. lilac crop sweater 2. high waisted denim jeans 3. silk camisole 4. animal prints 5. denim dress 6. button down top

Starting off with this fuzzy lilac sweater, why is it my repeat offender? Bright colors are big, they began late last year and coming in hot still. Neons will fall under the category as well. I paired it with another repeat offender, my favorite high waisted jeans and acrylic everything accessories. 6 CREAM

A silk camisole and a nod to the ‘90s trend. I’ve gone into the Victoria’s Secret pajama section plenty of times to stock up on these. The most versatile piece because it will go with everything and any reason to go out wearing pajamas, I’m game. I picked these snake print trousers, because we’re still riding the animal print wagon (looks like it will be a long ride —hence the trench).

And speaking of school girl: last look may involve trying to look like one. Because it’s a new year and there has to be some experimenting, here is a denim overall dress. To make familiar, I paired with a classic button down, knee high boots and a plaid blazer. So yeah, uniform but make it fashion.

I am loving all these trends, from the bright sweaters, snake or any animal print, to the acrylic accessories. Endless ways to switch up the repeat offender. But one thing we can take from this: moms know best; please take off to wash.

Licensed U.S. Customs Broker

GRI, ABR, CRS | Realtor at Coldwell Banker Ana Ochoa & Company

My original career path was to become a lawyer; this all changed because of a scholarship that I was offered, and I decided on studying Business. Growing up, my father owned a trucking company in Mexico. I soon began to grow a passion for Business and continued my studies in this field to earn my Master’s degree in International Trade. Then, I became a U.S. Customs Broker.

I began my realtor career with Coldwell Banker of Laredo more than 10 years ago. I knew I was meant to be my own boss. I enjoy socializing with people and building relationships, and I am not shy about handing my business card to a stranger at the car wash. I need this skill because I guide buyers and sellers through the most expensive and important purchase they will ever make.

Realizing the geographic importance of Laredo and seeing that this industry was dominated mainly by men, made me want to leave my footprint in the local customs brokerage business. I never imagined how much I would end up loving my career. As years passed, I continued to learn on the job and also through networking. The ability to network and deal with diverse shipments has also taught me about different cultures and products.

Personally, I love being a realtor because the scenery is always changing and the earning potential is limited only by the time I am willing to invest. I am a full-time agent, and my clients know I will always answer my phone. I believe mutual respect is essential to building all types of business. The majority of my business comes from referrals from past clients.

I was at a grocery store, walking through the aisles and saw several products that I had imported. That taught me the importance of my job. As consumers, we usually don’t understand the work it takes to get products from their origin to their final destination. I am grateful for my employees who I can count on daily. Knowing that your customers are satisfied inspires me to give my best. I would soon like to follow my father’s footsteps and have my own trucking company. 8 CREAM

I have lived in Africa and India but decided to make Laredo my home for the last 30+ years. I am fluent in Spanish. I have watched this community grow while I raised my three children here and can attest to this being an ideal place for a cozy life with an enjoyable and diverse culture. Laredo is an economically sound place to grow a business and seek new opportunities. I’m very involved in the business community here and know what areas are poised for growth. I can guide and advise my clients in making the right purchase for their individual needs.

Holiday Hangover I

t’s officially February, and may we have a moment of silence for the fastest January in the history of Januarys? For the strong willed, those of you who have already burned off the countless tamales, roscas, and booze… “You go, Glenn Coco!” I’ve seen those perky glutes on all your IG stories! For the rest of us who eat our feelings, this is the time to reset and really just be the best person you know you can be. Perhaps, you’ve hit a wall on a project, you’re feeling sluggish, or still just can’t seem to get your diet right? Maybe, you’ve fallen into a comparison trap and you’re trying to figure out why your life just isn’t as cool as “Becky with the good hair?” Well screw Becky, and let’s hope she gets pores in 2019!

BY ELYSSA CANALES VILLARREAL 10 CREAM

Personally, while everyone was turning up over the holiday break, I was sipping on caldo de pollo, endured a round of injections and grew an immense appreciation for my health. Aside from being a complete germ in December, it was also a series of justified anti-fitness days and eating like I was filming my own episode of My 600-pound Life. It was glorious! It was at least, until about two weeks into 2019; I was sick, saggy and still couldn’t quite shake off my holiday hangover. In more ways than one -- my workouts, spiritually and professionally I felt majorly disconnected. The rut was real!

I’m a firm believer in taking care of your mind, body and soul every single day; yet, I’m also very much aware that shit happens. PSA: It’s okay to feel displeased. Truly, it is. No one is going to feel fulfilled with their life 100% of the time. It’s called a slump because it’s a minor dip in the road. Regain focus and carry on doing the things that are going to improve those areas of your life that need nurturing. If you’re a parent, remember: your children will only reap the benefits of your well-being. Allowing your mind, body and soul the attention they deserve will only leave you feeling refreshed and content, right? Groundbreaking! LOL.

A great, wise fictional character, Ron Swanson, once said, “Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing.” Sometimes, finding the balance between the daily grind and the self-care you require are easier than you think. Make a list and check off one thing at a time. This Valentine’s Day, I want you to fall in love, but mainly with yourself…because it’s not selfish, it’s necessary.

The Unforgettable T

he actress was sitting in a small chair with her back to the audience, as the actor playing opposite her was circling and talking. He was in full view, she was not. Only her long neck and the back of her stiff blonde coiffure were visible, but she remained silent and still. Her lean right arm laconically dropped to her side and settled palm out against the back of the chair. And then without words, Jessica Tandy began to command the scene. Her white hands were larger than expected for someone so slight. They didn’t need much movement to reach the back of the theater, a flicker of her two middle fingers, her forefinger rubbing her thumb, a slow gentle closing of her fist, then an even slower reopening. For the rest of the scene, Jessica Tandy was the focus above the din of words, as her hand betrayed her unsaid thoughts to the audience alone. Jessica Tandy was a stage and film actress who died 25 years ago. She is mostly known for having won the Academy Award for “Driving Miss Daily” in 1989. Theater fans might know that she also won the Tony Award in 1948 on Broadway as Blanche Dubois in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” a role that she lost to Vivien Leigh for the movie. I was not in the audience for this performance, I wasn’t even born yet; but I feel as if I were there, because my late great friend Stanley Keilson was, and his reenactment of it for me brought it to vivid life. Stan was in New York in the late 1940s until 1952. A veteran of World War II and graduate of Trinity University in San Antonio, he was working toward his Masters at Columbia University, and preparing to launch a New York acting career. While there, he saw every Broadway play he could afford by purchasing discounted Standing Room Only balcony tickets, and waiting through intermission to see if any patrons in their Orchestra seats failed to return for the second act. He would then walk down and settle in for the rest of the performance. For this one, he sat in the front row center and was transfixed. Almost 70 years later, in the retelling of this one moment in this unforgettable stage performance, Stan presented Jessica Tandy so completely that it became my own memory of her that I could now write about with precise detail. Such are some unforgettable moments and some unforgettable people. The first time I saw Stanley Keilson, he was on stage too. It was in the mid-1970s and newly immersed in theater then, I had heard that “Sir Stanley” was performing in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” at Laredo Junior College in their theater-in-the-round Arena Theatre. By then, Stan had been on the faculty there since 1952, eventually as Theatre Director and Chairman of Department of Speech and Drama, but he wasn’t ready to leave his acting days behind him. Together with Hortense Offerle, he revived the long dormant Laredo Little Theatre in the mid-1950s, directing and acting in several successful productions.

BY JOE ARCINIEGA | arciniegajoe@gmail.com 12 CREAM

By the time I settled into my seat to see him live for the first time, I had already heard about his legendary performances as Henry Higgins in “My Fair Lady” in 1965, and later Willy Loman in “Death of a Salesman.” I was ready for an unforgettable theatrical night, and I got one. Some years later, we costarred in the musical “The Fantasticks” for Laredo Little Theatre. He played the role of the old Shakespearean actor Henry, unleashing the full potency of his presence upon us all. His wit and nuance, his language precision and diction, his eyes, mouth, hands, feet, and posture, all in full deployment for the maximum effect upon a dazzled audience. Again, unforgettable. Within that time, we became dear friends, though never equals. He was always the star, always my mentor, always the great “Sir Stanley,” who delivered as much panache in his living room as he did in the spotlight. He died at the age of 93. The last four years of his life were difficult for him to endure and for me to witness, but we did it because neither of us wanted him to go. In the early hours of a suddenly rainy October 15th, as the funeral director and his assistant reverently carried Stan, covered and unseen, out of his bedroom through the front room where a handful of us sat quietly, it suddenly made sense and began spontaneously; one by one we stood and applauded, and continued as they carried him out into the storm. An unforgettable moment with the unforgettable Stanley Keilson.

As Laredo’s only Catholic high school, St. Augustine gives students the tools they need to succeed after their studies. The students create strong bonds with each other that last for decades after graduation. Together, they walk the same hallways and follow the same faithbased, college prep curriculums that shape their lives forever.

Success Starts At St. Augustine

Sofia Cigarroa Contemporary Trend Buyer at Neiman Marcus. How has your education at St. Augustine influenced the person you are today? I owe much of who I am to the people and experiences at St. Augustine. The standard of academic excellence, commitment and respect were set by teachers and woven into the values that have gone beyond the classroom. Describe your favorite St. Augustine tradition. Pep rallies, the annual Field Day, Halloween skits and any tradition that involved the entire class were always my favorite. Backgrounds and differences were set aside to cheer on our class as a team. These traditions were reminders of the community created at St. Augustine.

What high school moment at St. Augustine stands out to you? The moment that has always stood out to me is Graduation Day. The size of our class allowed for each of us to develop close relationships with our teachers and fellow classmates. There wasn’t a single person that I did not share a memory with and Graduation Day was a bittersweet reflection of the memories spent learning and growing together. What advice would you give to prospective students or parents looking to enroll their children at St. Augustine? If you choose to enroll your child at St. Augustine, know that you would be enrolling them in a school that allows for them to grow spiritually and academically. The years may be short, but the benefits would last a lifetime. The tight knit community and unique opportunity to establish a foundation of moral structure is invaluable and something that I am infinitely grateful for.

Our homes are our havens. A magical place where we can be ourselves and not have anyone tell us to change out of our comfy clothes. Our place. Our spot where we can just enjoy sitting still. For Jenniffer, a person who loves socializing, it is also a place where she invites others in and works on bettering herself because this is who she is. This is her place...

Jenniffer K. Hachar Hachar Media Advertising

My favorite place is, hands down, my kitchen and patio.

I think that anyone who knows me, would agree I am an extrovert. I make friends easily and truly enjoy talking and getting to know people. I have a deep love for God, my family and all animals. I love the open feel and size of this house. I find it lends itself to entertaining, which is my favorite thing to do! Laughing and enjoying the company of good people are among my favorite activities. I can’t tell you how many events I’ve had at this house, surrounded by good friends, good food and amazing memories. My husband Robert is a history nut. He tells me this home is Moorish in design. You will see a lot of geometric patterns as well as Christian patterns. When we visited Granada in Spain, he pointed out many of the similarities in architecture and design, which I enjoyed, but when he starts getting into timelines, dates, etc., I’m like umm, next…

In this place, I love trying out new recipes and reading my selfimprovement books. My favorite thing about being in here is the serenity. This house seems to block everything out. When I’m here, I feel relaxed and safe.

What distinguishes you from the rest? We are not stock brokers, we are advisors, and most importantly we are fiduciary advisors. This means that we are legally obligated to act in our clients’ best interest. There is a big distinction between stock brokers and advisors that the public is not completely aware of, and finding out which investment professional is right for you is one of the first decisions investors should make. Cresta Advisors successfully uses a Goals-Based Wealth Management approach as an investment discipline. This approach emphasizes investing with the objective of attaining specific life goals, and measures investment progress in relation to the attainment of those goals. What are some common financial goals? Everyone should invest with the intention of achieving a goal or target, but the reality is that most investors do not have clear goals identified or even a plan on how to achieve them. An investor might have multiple goals that will, over time, evolve as those goals are achieved and new ones are discovered. Some examples of financial goals might include: • Saving for a child’s education • Retire at a desired age

• Maintain a desired retirement lifestyle

• Successful transfer of financial assets to the next generation • Establish or maintain a philanthropic initiative

How do you help someone achieve them? Communication is the key. At Cresta Advisors, we look for long term relationships with our clients to help us better understand their unique situation and formulate a financial plan to help them achieve their goals. Once the goals are established and the financial plan is in place, we invest their funds in portfolio models that align with their risk tolerance and financial goals. We proactively monitor and track progress in relation to their stated goals to ensure we stay on course through all financial market cycles and communicate this to our clients. Tips or action steps It’s always good practice to evaluate your accomplishments from previous years and assess your current and new objectives for the future. These are the same principles one should apply to their financial goals. Anyone who currently has investment accounts, or is considering establishing them should consider these points: • Decide which investment professional is right for you. A stock broker or an Advisor?

One wonderful evening at

Mamá con glamour If you didn’t know about this year’s “Mamá con Glamour” event, here are all the insights you need to know so you won’t miss it again.

“Mamá con glamour,” or in English, “A mom with glamour,” is a wonderful event for mothers and children here in Houston where you get the chance to meet and see the work of the most talented vendors and organizers for children’s parties and celebrations in the city.

Rebekka Moreno, a mother who happens to also be a journalist, author, host of many TV and radio shows and a role model to every mom in Venezuela, founded the event. She has created a community of moms all over Latin America and was the one in charge of getting so many wonderful entrepreneurs and brands to show and share their amazing work and ideas for kids’ celebration events. This year’s event took place at the Houston Event Venue and gathered 35 vendors on an afternoon filled with fun, creativity and authentic ideas. In this article, I’m showing you some of my favorite ones.

I had the chance of being a part of the influencer team of this one-ofa-kind event, and I have to admit -- I was impressed to see so much talent and originality in every detail. Definitely, when it comes to great results, there’s always so much teamwork behind it, and I could say Mamá con Glamour is the perfect example that with great effort, creativity and a good team, magical results are possible. What is the one thing that he/she does that makes you go crazy? His: All the different facial expressions that she makes. Her: The fact that he is always so fresh and clean.

What has been the most romantic thing you have ever done for him/her? His: I proposed in Colorado on a mountain with a candles and roses at night. Her: I made him a personalized wine bottle for our anniversary.

Do you have a message for couples in long-term relationships? Go all in -- 100%. Have zero doubts that he/she is the one. Talk everything out. Be on the same page at all times of where the relationship is going.

Valeria & Poncho How did you meet? Our eyes met over the salsa bar at a local taco joint. We had lunch together, and we’ve been sharing tacos ever since. Where and how was your first date? It was making jello shots together, and then subsequently taking them to a Christmas Party, which was officially our first date.

How or when did you know he/she was the one? His: When she swam across Lake Casa Blanca to talk to me one hot summer afternoon. Hers: I didn’t notice it at first, but when I realized it -- it hit me like a ton of bricks. We were at the movies watching He’s Just Not That Into You. He was the one; I was sure. Spoiler alert: He WAS super into me!

So, you’ve been married a while now... What surprises you about him/her the most? His: Her heart and her willingness to go out of her way to help somebody. Her: His selflessness and his generosity. What is the one thing that he/she does that makes you go crazy? His: She always leaves the lights on! Hers: He pulls the blankets away from me, and I’m always freezing!

What has been the most romantic thing you have ever done for him/her? His: I surprised her with a trip to Madrid for our first anniversary. Hers: Hmmm, I don’t think I can beat that one, but I always try to do something special for Valentine’s Day and his birthday.

Cordelia & Beto How did you meet? Hers: Back in 1969, I saw him at a dance in high school. He was dancing with another girl, and I said, “This guy’s cute!” But that was it... Later in college we saw each other again and started to “hang out” (that’s what it was called back then…LOL) together with other students in college. And every time I saw him, my heart would flutter, so that was definitely a sign that he was the one! His: In college I saw her, and I immediately felt a jab like a lightning bolt when I saw her. Where and how was your first date? Hers: It was actually not a first date; however, I guess it turned out to be. The group that we hung out with in college decided to travel to Kingsville to see a football game. All the ladies were staying at the home of one of the girls traveling with us, and the guys would be staying with friends at the dorms. That night, Beto paid for my ticket, and then we went to the dance immediately after the game, where we danced all night, and the rest is history! We continued dating throughout college, and he courted me like a true gentlemen -- very proper, respectful, courteous and most of all very loving; truly old school, and I adored that... and my parents did too!

How or when did you know he/she was the one? His: It was when I gave her a ride after one of our classes in college. She was beautiful, and I immediately knew she was the one I wanted to live the rest of my life with. Hers: Throughout our dating in college, I knew he was a keeper. Every time I saw him, my heart would flutter. You know you hear about these things but don’t realize that it’s true.

So, you’ve been married a while now, what surprises you about him/ her the most? Hers: We will be married for 48 years come August 2019. Wow! What surprises us the most is that we think a lot alike. We start to discuss something, and he immediately tells me, “I was just going to tell you the same thing.” It’s incredible. Great minds think alike.

roberto l.

“beto” valdez and cordelia l. valdez

Describe your relationship in 3 hashtags: #LoveAtFirstSight | #MeantForEachOther | #LoveFromTheHeart

How do you manage to keep the relationship alive? Hers: Both Beto and I are positive and keep God in our lives. We are trusting and are there for each other always, but most important communication is a major tool that we have used throughout our married life. What has been the most romantic thing you he/she has ever done for you? His: When she handed me tickets to a concert to see one of my favorite singer/songwriters, Paul Anka. Hers: On my birthday while we were dating, Beto surprised me with a serenata. I’ll never forget that!

Do you have a message for couples thinking about getting married? It is most important to have God in your life, as He plays a major role to guide you throughout your married life. God will be there for you. He will never give you something that you cannot handle. Trust in Him and remember to keep those jars full of love, communication, compassion, humility and forgiveness. All these play a main part in your married life. 32 CREAM 34

The Fire Within

Let’s get to know the unsung heroes in our city: Laredo’s only female firefighters. We admire their bravery despite being outnumbered, their strength both physically and mentally and their courage to put their lives on the line every single day when they walk into work. Cream was honored to be able to sit down with these three badass women.

Lisa Christine Villarreal 24, Firefighter/Paramedic | Laredo Fire Department

When did you join the fire department? I’ve completed three years of service, including one year at the rescue fire station. Our hiring process was one year, and we graduated after one year at the academy.

How did you decide you’d become a firefighter? It wasn’t your typical childhood dream -- to be a firefighter. I didn’t truly realize I wanted to be a part of this organization until sometime during the actual fire academy. I had no true idea of what the job entailed, and once I discovered that, I knew I wanted to be here. What was the most difficult part of the training academy? Overcoming adversity and a physical training that I had never experienced before.

What is the best part about being one of the few women on the department? Learning a entirely new craft that gives you something new to learn every single shift.

What do you wish more people knew about your job? We spend our own money for the things that we may need or want at the station; it is not given to us by the city. It’s not all glory and couch time. It’s hard work. Missed birthdays and first words. It’s sleepless nights with stress at both work and home. It’s aching back and joints with increased cancer risks. Yet after all that… it’s the best job in the world. Can you share a favorite story since becoming a firefighter: My favorite story would definitely have to be on the medical side of the spectrum. While I was going through the academy my cousin who is only a year younger than me was going through nursing school. After a few months on the line, I had the privilege of watching her graduate and get hired in the emergency room. Family is always first for me, and in this job we may not get to see our families as much as we’d like to. It may be the only place I get to see her nowadays, but the first time I gave her my report, I felt this fullness of joy and a true appreciation for the career path I’ve chosen.

CREAM 39

Editorial | Cream City Magazine

Catherine J. Archer Lara 29, firefighter/paramedic | Laredo Fire Department

When did you join the fire department? I took a written entrance exam in March of 2015. Then there was about a ten month period of various interviews and physical tests. My first paid day of training was January 13, 2016. I graduated the training academy February 23, 2018, and my first day on the line was February 27, 2018. How did you decide you’d become a firefighter? I graduated college and worked some office jobs, but it didn’t suit me at that time. After six months volunteering with the Brothers of Saint John at an orphanage in India, I became interested in the medical field. My love for helping people and my passion for doing exciting things led me to this job, which is a perfect fit. What was the most difficult part about the training academy? The physical training was challenging, but being away from my son for long hours was definitely the most difficult part of the academy. Through that, I learned to appreciate every moment I have with my family.

What is the best part about being one of the few women in the department? It’s an honor to be a Laredo firefighter. Captain Ana Venegas was the first female firefighter here and her leadership has paved the way. I hope to inspire other young women to have the grit to accomplish their dreams. During work at Station 8 B-shift, I’m just another firefighter/paramedic, and my duties are the same as my brothers. What do you wish more people knew about your job? First, this isn’t just a job or even a career -- it’s a family. We are also very active in our community through our Local Union 872. Some of our projects include raising money for local women affected by breast cancer, cleaning up at the animal shelter, the annual Christmas toy drive, collecting coats for homeless veterans, and we’re currently working on a Valentine’s Day party for the children receiving services from Casa de Misericordia. Can you share a favorite story since becoming a firefighter? This may be more impactful than a “favorite” story, but about three months before I began the fire academy, my father suffered a heart attack and died at home. This was the first time I’d ever done CPR or called 911. Paramedics quickly arrived and took over. I’m very grateful to the medics and ER staff who did everything they could. I wasn’t a firefighter yet, but it opened my eyes to how humbling it is to serve our community in such a tangible and personal way. I believe this experience has helped me to stay calm and work smart in tough situations and to be understanding and compassionate with families and patients.

Katherine Anne Ramos 27, firefighter/paramedic | Laredo Fire Department

When did you join the fire department? January 13, 2016

How did you decide you’d become a firefighter? I always knew I wanted to serve my community and help others. It wasn’t until I was about 18 years old that I was introduced to the idea of working for the fire department. At the time, I worked at a gym and one of the members told me about being a firefighter/paramedic. It kinda just snowballed from there.

What was the most difficult part about the training academy? The academy is structured to push you to your limits, both physically and mentally. Everything was difficult, but we worked as a team and pushed each other. I never would have been able to get through it without my academy mates. What is the best part about being one of the few women on the department? I’m proud and honored to be a part of this department. To me, being a female in the department is no different than being a male. We are all committed in serving our community. But if anything, we add diversity, and that’s always a good thing. What do you wish more people knew about your job? I wish more people knew the sacrifices we make. We are away from our families for 24 hours every third day. We miss birthdays, holidays and anniversaries so we can serve our community.

Can you share a favorite story since becoming a firefighter? I don’t really have a specific favorite story, but I can tell you my favorite moments are those times during the shift when we gather around as a crew and just act like a family. It’s crazy how quickly these guys have become my family. CREAM 41

Christopher Moncivais Nature and society are at a constant tug-of-war for dominance, and humankind seems to be in control, in most cases. For "Invasion," I wanted to

discuss the idea of nature fighting back in forms of plague or infestation. Humans are infamous for using land to further their own needs, regardless of the inhabitants affected. One approach would be to use agriculture and how certain insects can hinder its growth by simply being present and surviving off our hard work. For this piece, I chose the harlequin cabbage bug (blue) and the longhorn beetle (black) for both their aesthetics and tenacious appetite -- two traits humans can relate to. However, there is little point in depicting it in a grotesque fashion. The average person already views insects as pests. I wanted to show these creatures in a composition that suggests harmony and symmetry -- that there is still visible beauty in such a struggle between man and nature.

title of your art piece: invasion

60" x 60" mixed media. Plaster, paint and ceramic on wood.

About the artist: I am a 23 year-old artist currently enrolled at UT-San Antonio’s MFA Sculpture program. I was born and raised in Laredo, Texas. I am interested in the processes and health of the ecosystem, which is the base of all my work. It explores the negative and positive relationship between humankind and nature. I use metaphors to discuss topics such as deforestation or destruction of environment. For example, a large portion of my pieces use insects to discuss such subject matter -- using insect behavior as a parallel to human behavior. The purpose for such work is to help bring about ecological awareness to my audience and eventually help create a social change.

Creamistry Sometimes friendships last a few years. Other times, they can last a lifetime. This group of friends met almost three decades ago and have been inseparable ever since. Sonia, Boris, Diana, Janet and Susana come together to share with us their secrets for maintaining such a strong and long lasting bond that we call Creamistry.

BFF

Janet Ramos Sonia Vidal Susana Vasquez

How did you meet? We met in school our freshman year (1992) at United High School. How long have you been friends? We’ve been best friends for 27 years… and counting.

What is it about your connection that has made your bonds last? The one thing we all value the most in our friendship is trust. We know we can count on each other for everything and anything. There is not one thing, good or bad that we don’t know about each other. We are always there to help, to laugh and cry together. Friendships are preserved through honesty, always having your friends in mind and always being available for whatever favor might be needed, without expecting anything in return! All these things have solidified our beautiful bond! What’s your favorite thing about each other? We love that we are so diverse and that even without saying anything, we know what the other is thinking!

What is your favorite thing to do together? Travel! It’s always an adventure, and even though we know each other perfectly and know exactly what to expect in every situation, there is always something that pops out of the blue that makes our time together memorable. We also always enjoy a nice dinner with a glass of wine. What makes your bond unlike any other? Between us exists friendship, trust, complicity, and above all, loyalty. What always manages to make you all laugh? Memories! Remembering everything we did when we were young. We have so many stories to look back on. ...And to make fun of !

Where do you see your friendship in 20 years? Hopefully not playing cards at Regent Care Center! We hope we can still be together just as we have been for the past 27 years.

What’s the secret to a successful friendship? We have been friends for so long mainly because we have learned to accept each other as we really are. We all have different personalities and sometimes don’t share the same opinions. That’s the beauty of our friendship; we accept and love each other no matter what. I think trusting each other is our secret. Would you be able to successfully order food for each other without having to ask? Of course! We’ve had so many lunches and dinners together that we already know what we each like and dislike.

It’s 2019, and the beauty business is booming! Kylie Jenner is set to be the world’s youngest billionaire thanks to it, and women all over the world are also growing their own businesses. Cynthia Tovar, owner of Mint Spa Care & Salon in Nuevo Laredo is another new entrepreneur making a splash in the local scene. For her, however, beauty is much more than throwing on some lip gloss to look alive. It’s not just skin deep; it is giving others the ability to feel comfortable and beautiful in their own skin.

Restoring Confidence T

ovar studied Micropigmentation and Cosmetology in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon back in 2005 and has been working in the field ever since. She does facial, paramedic and oncologist micropigmentation, which consists of camouflaging scars and burns, amongst other things. At Mint Spa, they also reconstruct the area of the areola and nipple in 3D for patients who have gone through breast reconstruction and would like a more natural look after their surgery. “I have a huge commitment with my customers to always bring them the best there is,” Tovar said. Her late mother, who suffered from breast cancer was her primary inspiration in the concept for Mint Spa Care & Salon. “There is much talk about cancer and what the clinical aftermath provokes, but very few times we pay attention to the psychological effects due to the physical changes’ cancer patients go through.

For a woman who has overcome breast cancer, it is impossible to forget it if they have a constant physical reminder. My labor is just a small part to help others make more bearable the long way patients have to endure to go back to their lives. I can help patients recover their emotional sanity and close that harsh chapter in their lives that will never be forgotten, yet can face full of optimism,” Tovar shared with Cream. She has traveled all over the world to conventions and trainings. She attended the Shanghai Micropigmentation Competition as the Mexican representative. Additionally, she recently traveled to Barcelona to be part of a convention on the topic of micropigmentation for breast cancer patients. Women who battle breast cancer go through surgeries, chemotherapies, radiation and reconstruction processes. Tovar has found herself helping these women feel confident about their bodies again. Her training has also allowed her to do eyebrows for those patients who have lost their hair as a result of chemotherapy. “One of my patients who had breast cancer was not able to recover her eyebrows after all the treatments. After I was done with microblading her eyebrows, she was a puddle of tears. She said they were tears of joy to see her face whole again. It was at that moment when I realized my labor is not only aesthetic but also a necessity.” We are so proud to hear of women changing others’ lives through hard work and passion for what they do. They are truly changing the world! CREAM 47

Dough-Not Miss These Doughnuts!

People say being vegan is one of the hardest things to do. Some say the hardest part is saying goodbye to all those delicious desserts made with milk, eggs and butter. Whatever the excuse may be, we are here to tell you it’s false! Whaaat? Yes, Creamsters, I am here to announce that there are vegan desserts out there, and they’re just as delicious as their non-vegan counterparts.

Bohemian Bakes is a local business that was created by Laredo couple, Alexa Alvarado and David Treviño. They started this business after they both went vegan a few years ago. They said they encountered a lack of pastry options available in the local community, so they decided to bake some for themselves, friends and family.

“We got such positive feedback, including people questioning whether they were actually vegan because they tasted so authentic, so we decided to share them with as many people as possible,” they told us.

Recently, Cream had the opportunity of tasting their delicious doughnuts. The ingredients include flax meal, instead of eggs, and almond milk, instead of regular milk. They skip dairy, eggs and anything else that may be animal-derived. However, let me tell you: I could not notice any difference other than the fact that they were absolutely scrumptious, even tastier than your typical supermarket doughnuts. Yup, I said that. Pumpkin spice, maple chocolate chip, almond chocolate and toasted coconut were just some of the doughnuts brought to us by the couple. Their best sellers include strawberry cream with chocolate drizzle and blueberry peanut butter. They are working on releasing an original chocolate doughnut cake! This delicacy will be an improvement to their chocolate cake, made to taste equally as delicious, in a doughnut-shaped, cake-sized delight.

Check out Bohemian Bakes’ Facebook page and their website. You can scroll through pics that will make your mouth water, and there is a section where you can submit an order or contact them directly. Dough-not miss it! Bohemianbakes.com | FB: @bohemian.bakes

25 Things List

NOT to do on Valentine’s Day BY LEONOR RODRIGUEZ

F

ebruary is upon us -- the month of love, in which Cupid flies around shooting his enchanted arrows at people trying to play matchmaker. Valentine’s Day is the one day out of the year where love is overtly celebrated with outlandish gifts and acts of romanticism. There are a lot of articles that publish things you should do on this lovely day: date ideas for couples, fun options for singles, recipes or DIY gifts to try and master to give that special someone. Most people might tell you how to spend your evening, but I’ve decided to put together a list of twenty-five things on what NOT to do on the day of love. Find out what February 14th no-no’s you should avoid.

1. Complain about being single 2. Go on a blind date 3. Expect a kiss just because it’s Valentine’s Day

4. Eat Valentine’s chocolate all in one sitting

5. Buy flowers and pretend someone sent them to you

6. Doubt that love is out there 7. Forget to make a dinner reservation 8. Contact an ex because you feel lonely

9. Brag about your relationship 10. Give your special someone a useless gift

11. Be by yourself (Spend it with friends, if you’re single!)

12. Over-text the person you like

15. Surprise your date with a third wheel

16. Listen to sad songs and think about your ex

17. Send an anonymous Valentine’s gift (Be brave and say how you feel!)

18. Agree to go on a date with

someone you friend-zoned

19. Ask someone out on a

first date on Valentine’s Day (might sound desperate)

20. Stalk your ex’s new relationship on social media (move on)

21. Don’t think less of yourself for not having a date; it does not define you as a person.

22. Beg your best friend to cancel their plans and stay in with you

23. Bring up politics while on your date

(Love is already complicated enough.)

13. Propose marriage or make any

24. Go on a bitter rant about how

14. Suggest a bad movie

25. Lastly... DON’T FORGET

major promises on this day

stupid Valentine’s Day is

VALENTINE’S DAY!

However you decide to spend Valentine’s Day, make sure you spend it with the special people in your life. Just remember not to commit any of the things listed above.
