elcome to our 24th April/May edition. We are extremely excited to share the stories and unforgettable moments that we will cherish forever, such as the article we dedicated to all mothers, but especially those young, hip mommas out there! A huge shout-out and warm hug goes out to every single one of them as we celebrate their special day! April is Autism Awareness Month, and our pages are graced with four distinguished Autism Awareness and Education Foundation of Laredo ambassadors who are representatives of the cause. The accompanying piece is definitely a must-read! Let’s all spread the word and become educated and actively involved in this noble cause.

Ever since we first launched Cream almost four years ago, we have stood out for being the main source of showcasing the richness in art and culture of our beautiful city. A while back, I had the opportunity to meet an incredibly talented woman, with a wonderful personality and an inventive mind, and I have always been amazed by her artistic creations. It wasn’t until I saw her artwork “Karl,” that I could not stop admiring such impressive work of color and geometry that I was more enamoured than ever! In this edition, Analy Diego shows us her masterpiece in the cover of our publication and talks about her style and inspiration! Thank you to all our loyal readers for being a part of the Cream family!

ESMERALDA ESTEVIS GONZÁLEZ An accomplished businesswoman

PENNY VLAGOPOULOS A creative, dreaming soul

ALEJANDRA ÁVILA The face of youth and determination

Meet three dynamic achievers who contribute to the development of both Laredos. They are flying high on Cream’s radar.

ESMERALDA ESTEVIS GONZÁLEZ

Speech-Language Pathologist and Owner, Safari Kids Rehab

I began my career 12 years ago working at a local hospital treating adults with swallowing and speaking difficulties. I was fresh out of graduate school and ready to change the world, one client at a time. During my first year working at a hospital, I was bitten, slapped, spit on, and shoved by my adult patients. Then, in my first year when I went to work with children I was also bitten, slapped, spit on, and shoved by them too. I realized that they were not mean and aggressive people. What they wanted was to communicate and that was their only means to do it since their verbal abilities were impaired. I knew my profession was going to be the one to help them learn to communicate again to their loved ones and family members. As a business owner, you wear many hats and you have to adjust to the constant changes. One minute I can be introducing a nationally recognized stuttering specialist to a room full of speech pathologists and next minute explaining to a teen parent the appropriate bottle feeding techniques for their baby with a developmental delay. Having worked with adults and children, I found that communication is what makes us who we are as an evolved species.

Having the inability to communicate can rob us of who we are and what we stand for as a person. Anyone who chooses to go into this career will find that it is the most rewarding job in giving back to the community. I would say to them to keep focused and don’t let anyone hold you back. And don’t forget to come back to Laredo to serve our community!

PENNY VLAGOPOULOS

Assistant Professor of English, Texas A&M International University

of moments like these. These ideas that we toss around in the classroom leave lasting marks and have profound effects.

I am told that I am a dynamic, passionate person, and I think these qualities serve my profession well. When students see an engaged, enthusiastic professor, their intellectual curiosity is ignited. I am always grateful for what I have but I never become complacent. I am a bit of a free spirit and need new experiences in order to thrive. I hope always to improve my craft and to grow as a person. It is an extremely difficult time to be an academic in the humanities, which are increasingly under attack, but those of us who make a living reading and writing and sharing ideas are lucky. To have a career that rewards integrity and promotes the capacity to remain wonderstruck is as good as it gets. My most important goal is to make a real difference for others and to be a better human being.

ALEJANDRA ÁVILA

Law Student, University of Texas at Austin

My college experience was very international; I studied abroad twice, was part of Model United Nations, and led the Association of International Students. I always knew I wanted to pursue a public interest career and do good things for people, but I never imagined life would open so many incredible doors for me throughout the journey. These experiences have changed my life. I never thought someone like me –young, from a small Texas town, with very little experience, and zero connections – could end up working next to some of the most powerful and successful people in public service. Taking up the challenge of working at these places has been very inspiring and self-fulfilling. I’ve accomplished some goals, but there’s no stopping point in life, especially when you’re young and continue to recreate yourself professionally. The end of law school is really just the beginning of my legal career. I have many other things yet to achieve.

After learning to read at age three, I was happiest wandering through imaginary literary worlds and began creating my own in poems and short stories. Through my love of literature and my experiences as a teacher, scholar, and writer, I have been able to evolve in so many ways. From a very young age, I had a sense that I had a calling for this life. Words have always intrigued me.

Everybody can teach you something. I find people inspirational because they’re a daily reminder of what a small piece of a giant puzzle we are in this world, yet how every individual can make a difference in other people’s lives.

I received my Ph.D. in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University in 2008 and joined the TAMIU community in fall 2009. One of my best students wrote me a moving letter, in which she thanked me for leading her to a politicized Chicana identity—a worldview that she planned to impart to her daughter. On days when our work feels thankless, I think

I’ve been able to develop incredible friendships and mentoring relationships around the country and abroad. My experiences have also given me the opportunity to develop client-attorney bonds, which are really gratifying and a big responsibility. Lastly and most importantly, I love seeing my parents happy and proud of the things I’ve accomplished. It’s a rewarding feeling. cream april / may 2014

Are We What We Watch?

THE

INDE

X

The month of January is quite boring. There are hardly any businesses open for the first couple of weeks and social events are at a minimum either because people are tired from the gatherings that take place in November and December, or because the cold weather makes people want to stay in. My fiancée and I have, for years, opted to make an effort to watch every film nominated for Best Picture in the Academy Awards in order to have a somewhat “informed” decision when it comes to the actual ceremony. Sounds pretty dull, I know. But what else are you going to do every Sunday night after eating Chinese food?

Movies play a very large role in pop culture. Call us bored nerds who overanalyze things all you want, but it’s interesting to see what themes or acting abilities moved the American public on any given year. A quick analysis of previous winners will display certain predilections that will make anyone scratch their heads. For example, 2006 can very well be labeled the year of the “gay Oscars.” Both Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal were nominated for Brokeback Mountain, a film which garnered a Best Director win for Ang Lee. Furthermore, the late Philip Seymour Hoffman took home the award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Truman Capote and Felicity Huffman was also nominated for her role as a transgender male in Transamerica. 2008 saw a collection of films that led many to label the event as “the dark Oscars.” Films such as No Country for Old Men, Atonement, Michael Clayton, and There Will Be Blood, were all top contenders in the race. Films full of greed and deceit were the ones bringing in the most in terms of box office numbers. It was also labeled the “international Oscars” since the four top acting categories were won by non-American actors and actresses. Although only one black actress won an acting award in 2010, that year saw an increase in recognition very well deserved by African Americans in the film industry. Both Gabourey Sidibe and Lee Daniels were acclaimed for their work as Best Actress and Best Director, respectively, for the film Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire. The Academy even went so far as to have Oprah Winfrey present the award for Best Actress and also paid their respects to Morgan Freeman by nominating him for his portrayal of Nelson Mandela in the movie Invictus. It’s safe to say that moviegoers applaud a certain theme every now and then, so what happened in 2013?

have movies become the barometer to what we are and what we need out of life?

In 2010, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to change the number of possible nominees from five to ten. This meant two things: there was more talent to be recognized, and we had even more homework. We spent a considerable amount of time analyzing the nominees, so let’s begin.

We start off with yet another story of greed and deceit: The Wolf of Wall Street. Scorsese’s adaptation of Jordan Belfort’s activities did extremely well in portraying this unwanted, yet common characteristic in people. So did American Hustle, a film that revealed the lengths people will go to in order to succeed and survive regardless of the cost. Speaking of survival, little is left to the imagination when it comes to this issue with films such as Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Gravity, and 12 Years a Slave. Be it in scenarios entirely different from one another,

BY RUBÉN BAZÁN III THERUBENINDEX@GMAIL.COM

they all tell stories that capture the need to continue being alive. A captain on a ship being threatened by murderous pirates, an HIV-positive man desperately seeking the medication needed to live more than thirty days, a first-time astronaut floating in space with no help whatsoever, and a free black man forced into slavery for 12 years all share the need to survive. They all share a sense of intense desperation that was not in their plans. We move on to Best Picture nominees Her, Nebraska, and Philomena; films which tell the story of someone in desperate search of something else regardless if that entity comes in the form of a faceless yet readily-available operating system with a sweet voice, a long-awaited monetary prize which may never come to fruition, or a long lost son. The themes are there. Yet, does this mean that the American moviegoer is compiled of a population desperately aching to share their struggle for survival? Or could it be that we are becoming aware of how lonely and helpless we can be at times? It may be something to consider.

The need to be heard is nothing new, but it does raise the following question: have movies become the barometer to what we are and what we need out of life? All were great films with impressionable screenplays and stupendous acting and directing. However, if these themes are what made the most money at the box office, there may be issues we may need to personally deal with. They may be “just movies,” yet there is a reason why they resonated with us so deeply, and it gives my love and I something to talk about after digesting ungodly amounts of butter-soaked popcorn. I’ll see you at the movies!

aster is my favorite holiday. I get to spend an entire leisure and sunny day barbecuing with my family. There’s nothing better than that. Let’s not forget to mention, I get the once a year opportunity to smash Easter eggs on all my family members. It’s the fight of the year, when the strongest take advantage of the weakest and shove confetti-filled Easter eggs down their pants. Everyone has to be extra careful not to be the next victim. It’s the scene of a lifetime; watching middle aged adults running around like children and everyone covered in confetti is priceless. Another fun tradition we do is hide a $50 bill in a plastic Easter egg. My grandmother hides it in the garden and both adults and kids participate in “the hunt.” It’s all really exciting, however, the best part of Easter festivities has to be the food made and brought by each of my 5 aunts. From creamy potato salad, to ribs and borracho beans, the array of dishes are abundant and delectable. But, no matter how good the food is, nothing beats my grandmother Mamina’s Arroz con Leche (also commonly known as rice pudding). It’s considered a sin not to have at least one serving. It’s a dessert she has perfected over the years and it’s delicious beyond what words can explain. I indulge in this exquisite dessert every Easter and in every other occasion I have the delicious privilege to savor it.

...no matter how good the food is, nothing beats my grandmother Mamina’s Arroz con Leche. It’s considered a sin not to have at least one serving. The perfect dessert to offer at any party or gathering, Arroz con Leche is a traditional recipe most Latino families cherish. Eat it warm or cold, it will always be an extraordinary A+ comfort food. This dessert is the perfect combination of creamy and sweet with a touch of cinnamon to tie it all together. I can’t get enough. BY MAITA FERNÁNDEZ

Maita has had a passionate relationship with food for as long as she can remember. As a chef and restaurant owner, she seeks to put a smile on people’s faces by creating original dishes.

Mamina’s Arroz con Leche ingredients

4 ½ cups water 3 tablespoons butter • 2 cups long-grain white rice • 2 small cinnamon sticks • ½ cup sugar • 1 12oz. can evaporated milk • 1 14oz. can condensed milk • ½ cup whole milk only if needed • Ground cinnamon for dusting • •

instructions

Put the water and cinnamon sticks in a medium-size saucepan and set over medium-high heat. Once the water comes to a soft boil, add the butter and rice. Let boil over medium-high heat, uncovered, for 15 minutes or until the rice is tender. Stir in the sugar, evaporated and condensed milk and continue to cook until the mixture comes to a boil. Reduce the heat to low and cook, stirring occasionally, until the rice is thick, about 10-15 more minutes. Remove from heat and let cool for 15 minutes. If the rice turns out a little dry, add some milk to make it creamier. Transfer to serving bowls and dust with cinnamon to serve.

Mom

Modern

Being a mother is a precious gift that women all around the world hold dear to their hearts. It entails more than changing diapers and singing along to kiddie songs; it means that we have a new priority in our lives, something bigger than a social life, a polished image, and sometimes even a decent sleep cycle. Despite all hardships and bumps along the road, nothing compares to holding that little person in your arms at the end of the day. Motherhood is a selfless, and often thankless, job; but for all you nonmothers out there, I’m going to let you in on a little secret, it’s not really about how much you have to give and sacrifice, but about all that you receive in return. Happy Mother’s Day!

Confidence The thing that has surprised me the most about motherhood is just how secondary everything else is. Sophia Ella, my first born, is now 4 years old...she’s the best little girl a mommy could ever ask for and a little sister could look up to. She gifted me my first experience as a mother, and her heart and mind captivate me every day. Stella Alyssa, my 6 month old daughter, is following in her big sister’s footsteps; she’s tiny, but fierce, and ready to take on the world! Being a mom comes with its obvious life changes, like lack of sleep and minimal social excursions, but it also enhances your self-confidence; you learn that you can take on quite a lot and make it all work.

Kristelle Sophia García

Love

Being a mother isn’t something that is easy to describe in words, so I’ll just use one: “LOVE.” It is lifechanging, world altering, ground shaking, love. It seems I’ve become oblivious to the world around me and all my senses are focused on this little human we’ve created. To think ten months have come and gone since the birth of Sergio Alonzo really puts things into perspective. Watching him reach each milestone in his short, wonderful life puts an overwhelming feeling of excitement into each new day. One more thing, this kid’s smile! It’s a smile that makes me be grateful for all the gifts in my life and appreciative of every speed bump and fork in the road that led me to this beautiful place I’m in now.

Sonia G. Vidal

Miracle The feeling of becoming a mother was life-changing. My body and my mind, not to mention my life, have been turned upside down and to be quite honest, it has not been easy to adjust to this new life. That being said, there is absolutely nothing I have done in my life that has made feel as proud as having Ponchito. Although I have just started this journey, and I may not know yet what lies in store for me as a mother, I know that creating a human being allowed me to experience and witness my very own miracle.

Valeria Barcel贸-Casso

Motherhood is a wonderful journey that brings out the best in you. It comes with lots of love, laughter, tears, and fears, but it is by far the greatest gift from God. It means being the best role model for the lives you have brought into this world. My two daughters, Ella and Natalia, mean the world to me, and I wouldn’t change anything about them. They are a true blessing. As a mother, you need to love, educate, and slowly prepare your children for their future. It’s a lot of hard work, but it comes with lots of joy and unforgettable moments.

Elisha González

Laughter

Guidance All throughout my life, God has bestowed upon me a multitude of blessings, one of which is the most wonderful event of my life, becoming a mother. My daughter has brought meaning to my life and has turned it upside down. It hasn’t been easy, because nobody is born knowing how to be a good mother; the only thing I know is that I want to be a great mom in order to guide her, look over her, and love her. It is an incredible experience, and I have learned that it requires dedication, patience, the giving of oneself, but above all, love. Motherhood has been the best thing that has ever happened to me, and I will always strive to keep my daughter on the right path.

a r u t i r c s E a L L

Entrevista a

uch introspective reflection is inevitable at this time of year, and I have a front row seat. Two of my children are graduating this May, a daughter from high school and a son from graduate school; and though I am not a teacher myself, my wife, sister and several close friends are, so I also see it from their side. But I didn’t need this unique perspective, because as far back as 1967 when it was released, the movie To Sir, with Love starring Sidney Poitier set me straight about teachers. They are gods and goddesses worthy of our eternal obeisance, and yes, all of it delivered with love.

Based on the 1959 autobiographical novel of the same name by Guyanaborn E.R. Braithwaite, the film now feels dated and burdened by the pop culture anachronisms inevitable over time when “the youth” are represented, as evidenced by the tagline for the movie poster, “A story as fresh as the girls in their minis, and as cool as their teacher had to be.” Faring better is the movie theme song of the same title sung by British pop singer Lulu portraying a student paying wellearned homage to her teacher, Poitier, on the last day of school. The song lyrics reach deep through their simple youthful sincerity, “The time has come for closing books and long last looks must end. And

as I leave, I know that I am leaving my best friend, a friend who taught me right from wrong and weak from strong. That’s a lot to learn. What can I give you in return?” What indeed. I wasn’t the easiest student. My mother tells me that from the earliest age I questioned everything, that I was convinced I knew everything, so I worried about everything, including how little of anything I felt others, especially adults, knew. But I remember how my 4th grade teacher at Heights School, Mrs. Borchers, handled it. When I expressed my usual irritation at the sheer folly of humanity from my own 8 year old perspective, she would answer, “I know, you are so right, but everything will be fine in the end,” then she would serenely continue grading papers while I kept her company. I kept her company because she was pretty and smelled good, but mostly because she listened and she was right. But she wasn’t the only one. I have had such teachers in my life that I could write a novel of my own about them. Mrs. Borchers, now my friend Celita, stands in my memory, but also Mrs. Pérez, Miss Zapata, Rosa Martínez, Miss De La Chica, Gloria Flores, Coach Adame, Ramon Villafranca, Ed Bueno, Manuel Castañeda, Diana Czar, R.B. Dallin, Brother Joe Herrera, Rita Domínguez, Adriana Barrera, Coach Batey, and others I may have forgotten to mention, though I will never forget what they taught me.

Teachers, good and bad, teach us well beyond the lessons in books, but it is the great ones that make our hearts remember and our souls sing, “…If you wanted the moon, I would try to make a start, but I would rather you let me give my heart...” As the teachers on your list look toward their own tomorrows, before you move on, find them; look them in the eye with the love that time will reveal they deserved, and say “thank you.” There is the greatest likelihood that they will well deserve it.

The

There’s not a person on this earth that doesn’t own a pair of denim jeans (hats off, Mr. Levi). Better yet, I dare you count all the pairs that have been called your own throughout your lifetime. Lost count? I thought so. And I don’t blame you; in fact, I salute you. It is the most stable and faithful item that will ever hang in your closet. So of course, they are deserving of an article. Proceed by filing under uniform dressing.

W

hen we come into our daily routines of selecting our clothes, there is an 85% chance we might pick out a pair of denim jeans; they may take you to work, run errands, lunch with girlfriends, date nights, road trips –list goes on and on, they are the perfect chameleon to what we want to be/do that day. Here is where these faithful pairs become more astonishing and underrated piece of clothing, they come with us everywhere and have evolved to fulfill our lifestyle needs.

The boyfriend jeans The most relaxed of cuts. Slouchy around the waist, rugged and comfortable, it’s made to give an effortless look maintaining that thoughtless vibe for which they have earned the throne of the fashionista’s choice. My rule when wearing these is to pair with a structured top to balance out proportions to help look put together.

ns a e j g e l e r a l f

These are my favorite; hemmed the right way, they allow you to hide a chunky wedge that adds on a few inches and make a leg run for days. Made popular in the 70’s, they are best when worn in a bohemian way. Give out good vibes with a tunic and colorful necklaces.

Wide leg jean

Skinny jeans

A girl next door approach never fails and it’s the most appropriate for work. Tuck in a crisp white button down or a dainty crochet top for a feminine feel. I added pops of leopard print because we all know it’s a neutral and a wide belt that helps accentuate the waist.

Some say they’re on their way out, but I digress. Don’t miss out on keeping these awesome jeans for they are versatile and look great in heels or chucks, like shown on the outfit. I went with a casual look, something I’d normally wear, with a favorite tee and tweed jacket.

Embellished jeans

The last look is for all the girls who like their jeans with a little sparkle (*raises hand). Due to its strong fabric, jeans have been patched, painted, distressed, you name it, all in the name of fashion and paying for a holefilled-falling-apart-jeans might not always make our peers proud, but we do it anyway. I found these embellished jeans and never looked back. I created a look for a party going outfit, thanks to the witches that came down the Saint Laurent runway, I am completely obsessed with the bow and tux trend. Jeans win for the most trusted and comfortable item that merits the investment or thrift of a lifetime, and taking the risk of sounding like an infomercial, I recommend you try them all and find the kind that’s right for you. There are many styles and cuts of jeans that flatter and fit every body type; extensive research has been done that will back me up. Do you think Kim K. really has that back end? Let’s hope not.

Challenges

W

hen I heard the word diet, images of all my beloved weekend marathons of Netflix and pizza and random post-workout Chocolateka trips (counterproductivity at its finest) I would no longer have anymore began brimming through my mind as if my life was flashing before my eyes. As luck would have it, the Posh challenge is truly not one’s typical diet. Instead, it’s that enlightening moment when you realize you can lead a healthy eating lifestyle WITHOUT having to sacrifice taste. Naturally, as any other slightly introverted person, I was quite dubious of displaying my weight for the world to see on a daily basis for two whole weeks; although, what I found was that the encouragement brought on by various commenters kept me extremely motivated and aided in the process. Not that it was necessary when everything on the menu was spectacularly delectable. It might’ve felt strange going into Posh every day and not ordering my usual Paradise Roll; however, I was delightfully surprised to find that one day that was ACTUALLY a part of my menu (sans cream cheese, of course). With a menu consisting of grilled salmon with avocado and asparagus, ceviche, and chicken tepanyaki, amongst other absolutely mouthwatering meals, it became easy to forget that my lunch consisted solely on items based on a dietetic regimen.

So we decided to ask the owner of Posh himself, Gerardo Villarreal, not to mention a healthy living and exercise aficionado, exactly what was behind the fantastic Posh challenge and how it came about.

What made you decide to start the Posh diet? G. I wouldn’t really call it the Posh diet, as much as I would call it the Posh challenge in order for people to get an understanding that eating both healthy and delicious is just not a sacrifice. Who advised you on the meal plans and portions? G. First, I spoke to my cousin Dr. Gustavo Villarreal, who specializes in diabetes, and then I had a talk with a nutriologist, Sara Vásquez. What was the general response of the Posh challenge from the public? G. We’ve been doing the challenge for a year and people enjoy seeing the changes in others, more specifically the before and after, and we’ve had much success selling the dishes included in the Posh challenge.

Quite frankly, I feel everyone should try this amazing challenge at some point. Whether you’re already a health nut or you’re just like me and simply worship food. Even for those of you who can recreate it at home (honestly, who has the time though?). I was always the kind of person who started a diet and would end up cheating within three days, due to both my painfully weak will-power and how I just simply did not like the food; however, when I tried the Posh challenge I was blown away by how surprisingly easy it was. Not only did I lose weight, but the absolute best part was that I just had all this energy I didn’t even know I harbored. As a matter of fact, I would also like to include a big shout out to our friends at CrossFit Laredo who offered a free two weeks for anyone who was doing the challenge. They were also so incredibly helpful and helped me push my stamina and strength to places I didn’t even know I could go (I was sore for weeks). So from your friends at Cream, who give the Posh challenge a big shiny medal of certification, do yourself (and your health) a favor and give it a shot! 36

Which one is your favorite meal from the Posh challenge? G. Salmon with asparagus and avocado. Who would you recommend does the Posh challenge? G. I would recommend it for anyone, my idea was that everyone should have healthy eating habits, drink a lot of water, cut back on bread and tortillas, etc. I had a conversation with my cousin that remains very present in my memory where he asked me if I know what I’m doing; I responded that I did know, it was something very popular amongst women and would bring a lot of success to my business and he responded, “no, what you’re doing is prolonging people’s lives if they keep practicing these good habits,” and I just thought to myself WOW! I never really saw it that way!

ating all the way back to 1900 B.C. in Mesoamerica and closely associated with the Aztecs, yet perfected by the Europeans with its finest distributors in Belgium and Switzerland, it seems as though various nations can agree that “all you need is love, but a little chocolate every now and then doesn’t hurt.” Luckily for us Laredoans (and soon San Antonians), we don’t have to travel all the way to Brussels to acquire premium Belgian chocolate, but it can be found and relished in any of the two Chocolateka locations that have been established in Laredo since 2008.

Whether you need to mend a broken heart or satisfy your craving for sweets, to freshen up from Laredo’s notoriously brutal heat or simply because it is too darn “I-don’t-need-an-excuse” good, Chocolateka is the place to be. Versatile with their wide range of sweet or salty items in the menu for any occasion, there is absolutely no place in our city where you will find these ingenious concoctions made. Autism and Awareness Education Foundation President Lisa Morales-Hinojosa spoke about the organization’s strong desire to promote awareness and support those who are affected by autism, a neurological disorder which currently has no cure, and which inspired her, Claudia, Lorena, and Janet to form AAEF in February 2012. With the hopes of providing a better understating of autism to the public, and with great enthusiasm and an open heart, they lend a helpful hand to every one of their 135 members. If you’d like to join their mission, contact them at (956) 324-8903. Describe the meaning behind this organization. The meaning of our organization is HOPE. We’d like to ensure that all those affected by autism know that there are various resources available to aid each individual/ family and their special circumstances. By spreading awareness and promoting education, this gives way to allow each person who experiences the disorder to flourish throughout their scholastic journey and the rest of their lives. How does this organization help reach the goals of each autistic child? To help assist these children, we raise funds in an attempt to support them in their need-based areas. We offer scholarships towards various programs for those families that are underprivileged. Offering moral support is imperative so that not one person is made felt inferior. They must know they are not alone in this journey. Anything is possible for these children as the possibilities are endless.

Lisa Morales-Hinojosa President Claudia J. Uribe Vice-President Lorena Martínez-Fernández Secretary Janet Sánchez-Enriquez Treasurer

What is the most challenging aspect of a child with autism? It is said, “Once you’ve met a child with autism, you’ve met ONE child with autism.” Because autism varies in degree, the challenges may differ from one parent/family to another. Raising a child with autism is a long and emotional experience that no one could ever possibly be prepared for. With early detection and intervention, these individuals may lead fulfilling lives and become productive citizens of society. Tell us about a fun anecdote you’ve experienced in the foundation. I became known as “The Autism Lady.” This happened as a result of me sporting “electric blue” hair at a few of the events that our organization has held. People instantly began to recognize me because of it! I wore the color blue because it’s the signature color for autism as the ratio is 1 in 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls.

What do you think is the most serious issue to combat in autism? The ignorance amongst society to accept an individual with autism may be one of the most serious battles autistic children face. Their integration into society is a difficult one because many are misinformed or simply do not fully comprehend autism and all it entails. How has your professional background shaped your experiences as an advocate for many children? Acquiring a Master’s Degree in Special Education in the Fall of 2013 has allowed me to further understand autism. By gaining additional knowledge in this area and being the mother of an autistic child, I am able to incorporate all I’ve learned towards the cause of our foundation.

A Maine Coon named rocky. HOW OLD IS YOUR PET AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD IT? He’s 14 years old. He became a part of our family when he was about 3 months old. WHEN AND HOW DID YOUR HAT TYPE OF PET DO YOU OWN?

INTEREST IN THIS SPECIES AND RACE SPARK YOUR INTEREST?

My whole life I had been a dog person until I got married. My husband had previously owned a cat and thought that would be a great choice to have as our first pet. DO YOU OWN ANY OTHER PETS? IF YES, WHAT ARE THEY? Yes. We own a total of 5 pets, including Rocky. One is a male French Bulldog named Chunk. Two female Shih-tzus, Paris and Bella. We also own a female cat that our daughter adopted in San Antonio, Nina. WHAT DOES YOUR PET MEAN TO YOU? Every single pet we own is like our child. They each have their own personality. WHAT TYPE OF SPECIAL CARE DO YOU HAVE FOR YOUR PET? Our cat has been extremely healthy all of these years, so some simple tender love and care is all he needs. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITY WITH YOUR PET? When he climbs on up to the bed and sleeps right in the middle of my me and my husband.

"Every single pet we own is like our child. They each have their own personality" PATY FIGUEROA

IS YOUR PET TRAINED? HOW DIFFICULT WAS IT TO TRAIN THEM?

Yes, he is. They all are. Rocky was the least difficult to train. Cats are very low-maintenance when it comes to training. TELL US YOUR FAVORITE ANECDOTE WITH YOUR PET. My favorite story is of the first day we got him. It was New Year’s Eve 1999, and we were on our way to San Antonio to pick him up. He was our first pet as a family so everyone was just dying to meet him. When we finally got him, my daughter immediately fell in love with him. Like I said, pets are like children to us, so our family grew by one that day. It was so heartwarming. COULD YOU GIVE US SOME TIPS FOR WHEN CHOOSING A PET? Whether you adopt or purchase by a breeder, one must always think ahead. Will I have enough time for them? Will they be neglected? Do I have the means to support them? Dogs and cats in the end all just want the love that they unconditionally give us, so if you don’t have the time to give them any of those things, don’t get a pet. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT PEOPLE WHO MISTREAT ANIMALS? I think it’s a shame. The way animals live their lives is just as important as the way we live ours. IF YOU WERE AN ANIMAL, WHICH WOULD YOU BE AND WHY? Definitely a cat! Cats are so smart! I would probably love to be my cat Rocky, mostly because all he does is eat and sleep all day. What a carefree life!

ûlée louboutin

Your outfit is only as good as the shoes you’re wearing. Never forget. The right stiletto can accentuate your curves and give you the extra height you’ve always wanted. For boys, wearing something other than sneakers can get you very far both professionally and romantically. Trust. If you’re one of those people who are #blessed with the freedom to splurge every now and then, why now treat yourself to a new pair of Louboutins? You know, the iconic shoes with the red soles. You’ve probably seen really famous people wearing them before and wondered if you could ever walk a mile in their shoes. You probably won’t. Not trying to be shady. I just mean that if you can afford to buy these shoes you can probably afford a personal driver too. Who walks in this Laredo heat anyway? Certainly not you, mama. Treat yo’ self! You deserve it.

birkin bag

You’ve got the look. You’ve got the attitude. And now you’ve got the shoes. But what’s missing? That’s right- the perfect bag. A Birkin bag by Hermès. Good luck getting your hands on one of them, though. It was once reported that people waited up to six years to receive theirs. But I mean, who wouldn’t want to wait that long for a bag like that? Each one of them is unique and handmade. The leather they use is supplied by various vendors in France, and often times the animal it comes from is something wildly exotic... like an ostrich or a saltwater crocodile. There are no logos on it, but it is easily one of the most recognizable bags in the world. Keep that in mind next time you feel tempted to buy another Coach bag with the logo all over it. How much for a Birkin bag, you say?

black card

Don’t worry about it. Just put it on the Black Card. What do you mean you don’t have one? Oh yeah... I forgot it was invitation only. Sorry about that. But look. Just because I like you and because you’re reading this, I’m going to tell you exactly how to get your very own card. First, find a job that pays you at least one million dollars a year. Then, clean up your credit. But not before you buy yourself a yacht, or something. They need to see that you’re a big spender. Go on a shopping spree and look fabulous all the time. You need to have the right kind of strut to hold a card with this much power. Submit an application to The Rich Kids of Beverly Hills and pray for a call back. Do that and in no time you will be receiving an invite. Maybe? Idk. BY MEMO JIMÉNEZ ILLUSTRATIONS RICARDO A. GUERRERO III

YOGApose of the month If you’ve ever wanted to try Hot Yoga, but never really understood how static postures can actually be a workout, you’ve got to try Trikonasana or Triangle Posture.

Model: Patricia McBain

T

he apex of the Hot Yoga series, this posture has more benefits than you can count on all 10 fingers! Despite being a static posture, it is an excellent cardiovascular workout. Not only does it lengthen the spine, open the torso to promote proper organ function in the chest, and help regulate hormone levels, but it also opens the hips for an intense stretch. Equally valuable is the fact that it works all of the major muscle groups at the same time! A beginner’s mistake is to take too short of a stance; proper set up means taking a 4-5 foot step and then engaging the inner thigh muscles to prevent slipping. Focus on pushing the outer edge of your back foot into the mat and lifting your inner arch. Lastly, make sure you have no weight in the bottom hand as you press your elbow into your knee and reach for the sky with your top hand. That’s all there is to it…now change and repeat on the other side! Try to hold each side for eight to ten breath cycles.

Remember that Bikram says,

“When you improve your triangle, you improve your life 360 degrees.”
