What made you decide to open your own boutique? We love
shopping, mixing our outfits, and combining colors. My sister and I decided to open a boutique because it’s something we are interested in: clothing. We thought it would be a great experience to have our own boutique, and it is!

Why the name Prague? We had several options at first; we wanted something different. We chose Prague, which is a city located in the Czech Republic, because it is one of the fashion capitals in Europe. What makes Prague stand out from the other boutiques? We have
different styles and exclusive collections.
In the mornings, how do you pick which outfit to wear? It has to be something comfortable and at the same time modern, always showing some style. What are some staple fashion pieces for the summer in Prague Boutique? Summer prints & pastel colors.

This issue is incredibly special to me because it marks the celebration of our 5th Creamanniversary! This all started as dream of mine and nowadays is a publication of which I am proud to represent along with my team we have been able to become the most innovative magazine, always with fresh and original content that characterizes our every publication...zero ordinary! I am immensely grateful to God for this opportunity and even though it’s not always easy, since all the editorial world faces great challenges, with strength, will, and hard work, we have been able to keep making pages with editorial quality like no other offers in the city and always supporting different organizations and great causes. Cream is more than just a magazine, we are a family and I am very grateful to all the people that have been a part of it in the last five years; graphic designers, writers, interns, and contributors. In a way, we are sort of a school, and it is a great honor for me when someone that was part of our team “graduates” and goes on to do other things. I was a math teacher for 11 years. One summer a parent called me and asked if I could tutor her son. I guess you can say that he was my first client. From then on word got around and more parents called to ask if I could tutor their children after school and during the summer. Knowing that what we do makes a long lasting, positive academic impression on the children/students that we teach every day brings me great satisfaction. I believe some people are natural born teachers. I admire those that teach with passion and love.
“We have created something that makes a difference in the lives of children. Children look at every day like a present they unwrap with excitement. It is a privilege to be there when they unwrap the day.” The day I got my f irst loan, the president of the bank told me “Ed, anyone can open a business. The secret is succeeding.” The drive to do business was in me at a very early age. When I was nine, I would walk around collecting pecans in the Downtown-St. Peter’s Church area where huge pecan trees grew. I would then sell them to the people around Jarvis Plaza.

I knocked on a lot of doors back in the day. I opened offices in Monterrey, Nuevo Laredo, and Saltillo to build up a caseload, and even with all that, I was still doing only about two operations every two weeks. The problem when you start out is that nobody knows you, and the few that do, know that you’re inexperienced. Nonetheless, almost 20 years later, those four operations a month turned into four a day. I always wanted to be a plastic surgeon. I never envisioned myself going into any profession besides this one. I’ve always been passionate about sculpture and an admirer of women; plastic surgery is the only job where I could combine both. Sculpting a woman’s body is an honor and a privilege; losing oneself in the intricate connection between the concavities and convexities of her anatomy is a pleasure.
In my twenty years in private practice, I’ve come across a lot of different stories, some sad, some funny, but most of them with happy endings. After so many hours of consults and spent in the operating room, and after meeting thousands of wonderful people, I was driven to write a book, which I have donated to an institution that benefits lower income women in their fight against cancer.

Originally, I was interested in computer science, but after graduating college with a degree in Political Philosophy, and working in Mexico City, I realized that I could merge my love for computers and my passion for solving problems and helping people into a career in real estate. My career began working at our family business in Mexico City dealing with commodities and management of industrial facilities. This exposure to the industrial world as well as my previous experience of my father’s construction business growing up, led me to consider a real estate career. I was fascinated by seeing how the efficiency of a company depends largely on the real estate component. For instance, it all depends on whether the building is well located, if it allows for proper manufacturing flow, if it’s the right size, if the warehouse is properly sized for the goods being stored there, and so many other factors.
“My profession has given me the satisfaction of solving new challenges every day. I love meeting new people and I love seeing businesses grow and thrive once they are in the right property.” To those in pursuit of a career in real estate, my advice is to get involved in your community. y wife and I do puzzles. Yes, we’re one of those couples that do that now. We spend the occasional Sunday putting together 1500 piece Ravensburger puzzles that would make even the most patient person cringe. She’s been doing it for years and, just like I did with professional wrestling, she successfully managed to bring that habit into our home. I helped her do one a few months ago. It was excruciating. My personality type doesn’t allow the patience for it. Rummaging through almost identical pieces in order to complete an image is not something I ever particularly partook in, or ever thought was in me. I got home from work earlier than she did once, and seeing it partially completed on our dining room table, I took a stab at it. I sat down for thirty minutes and managed to accommodate a couple of pieces on my own. I was hooked.

Watermelon Feta Salad with Tangy Vinaigrette ingredients
• 4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 4 tablespoons fresh orange juice • 3 medium shallots finely sliced • 1 tablespoon honey • ½ cup olive oil • Salt and pepper to taste • 2 cups arugula • ½ medium seedless watermelon, rind removed, and cut in 1 inch cubes • 12 oz. feta cheese cut in small cubes • ½ cup fresh mint leaves thinly sliced instructions
To make vinaigrette, whisk the lemon and orange juices with the honey, shallots, salt, and pepper. While whisking, drizzle in the olive oil until well mixed. Arrange the watermelon, feta, arugula, and mint in a serving platter and drizzle enough vinaigrette to cover greens.

s I sit here and think of what I can write about summer, the first thing that comes to mind is to head outside and enjoy the awesome hot weather. But, if you’re a Laredoan, that doesn’t apply. Unless you’re at the beach or plunged in a pool, summers in South Texas can be excruciating. Our summers consist of scorching hot days in which walking to your car in a parking lot means you will be drenched in sweat once you find it and with a face as red as a tomato. If you want to survive yet another fierce hot summer, you gotta beat the heat and look on the bright, sunny side. An easy way to “keep it cool in the kitchen” and enjoy the summer heat is by cooking refreshing and juicy recipes like tangy ceviches, crisp salads, and luscious frozen, fruit filled desserts. After a long day at work, turning on the oven to make dinner when it’s 100 degrees outside may not sound like fun. No-cook meals are your super solution when it’s too hot to stand in front of the stove.
One of my favorite ingredients to use in summer has to be watermelon. From fresh aguas frescas to icy popsicles, juicy watermelon is a must have summer staple. But I don’t just limit it to sweet recipes. I love it as an added extra to zesty salads and gazpachos. It’s the kind of food that reminds me of the awesomeness summer cooking has to offer.
Pull your head out of your freezer and smile because there’s always a good side to the hottest mess, regardless of whether or not the summer sun gives you the ability to bake cookies on the dashboard of your car. BY MAITA FERNÁNDEZ

am the proudest person you can meet right now because when I think of our Laredo Lemurs, I think of excitement, entertainment, fun, and hope. When people ask me why I invested on this team I always say “Well, why not?” I just need to take five seconds, look at the entire Laredo Lemurs organization with its exceptional people, look at the Stadium, an awesome facility, and just realize “Yes, I’m home.” Therefore, my only expectation for this 2015 season is for everyone to take those five seconds and think “I am a Laredo Lemur and I am a proud member of this family.” Because we stand by each other no matter, next time someone comes and asks you why you think our Laredo Lemurs could be champions, you can always say: “Well, why not?” We are new, we are getting there, and we are winners. For my whole life I have struggled against limitations. This was how on a drizzly Sunday morning in 1994, I found myself at the twenty mile mark of the Los Angeles Marathon facing “The Wall,” a symbolic barrier with physical and mental manifestations, the marathoner’s nemesis, the finish killer. I was reminded of it by the clusters of “hoodied” Valley brats in our peripheral vision drawling “Get ready, dudes,” as they rattled makeshift “The Wall” signs. They weren’t rooting for us; the junior sadists wanted carnage, and within seconds, they got it.
M
y decision to begin training for this 26 mile 385 yard olympian feat began seven months before my thirty-fifth birthday. For me, that looming milestone impacted like none before. It wasn’t only about aging; it was about where I was in my life at that point. I was reasonably successful in business with a house in Valencia, an affluent suburb north of Los Angeles, my black Volvo joining the daily slither across the 405 Freeway toward my office on Santa Monica beach.
My life was on its own commute; and the mile markers were advancing at an unsettling pace.
But it was less about the things I had to have, than the things I had to do.
Throughout my first several months of marathon training on the boardwalk from Venice through Malibu, I kept thinking that, though registered for the race, I might not actually do it. Then, on January 17, 1994, an earthquake struck Northridge in the Los Angeles valley at 4:31 a.m., killing fifty-seven people, collapsing buildings and freeways, and causing fires and landslides. That morning I was at a friend’s just miles from the epicenter. My home and office were on opposite sides, both within a twenty mile radius. The first impact simultaneously propelled me and a large television set across the room in opposite directions. Then over the next nineteen horrifying seconds, it undulated its fury outward toward my home and office like it was snapping at them with the ends of an area rug. Neither L.A. nor my life was the same after that. Within
eight months, I left Los Angeles after fifteen years and accepted a position with a start-up technology company in Seattle. But first, I had a marathon to run in less than seven weeks, and if they weren’t going to cancel, I wasn’t. On race day, strains of Randy Newman’s 1980s anthem “I love L.A.” reverberated through the morning mist, competing with the whoops and chatter of 19,000 of us as we trooped toward the grandstand. There, my hero Muhammad Ali fired the starter’s gun and waved us toward the course that began at Exposition Park, pumped through Downtown, moved across Sunset Boulevard through Hollywood, Koreatown, and the “El Salvador Community Corridor,” with the final victory run into the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. My strategy was to pace myself under ten minutes per mile, leaving me an opportunity to finish within 4 hours. For the first nineteen miles, I was able to keep pace, and also enjoy the Hollywood excess of the event. Then, as I approached a corner I saw Heather Locklear or Heather Thomas standing on a platform ineffectively using a bullhorn, sputtering the words, “Twenty Miles,” and “The Wall,” and what sounded like a sarcastic “Good Luck” as we galloped by. It was just after the turn that runners began to falter. First one, then another, then two at once; grasping at each other as if either could stave off the inevitable crumble. It was as if “The Wall” was a transparent barrier with random wormholes for the fortunate to pass through. As for the others, I wasn’t sure whether theirs were physical or mental collapses, or both; though it didn’t matter, the end is the end. Just as I was thinking those very words, the compact Asian that had been running immediately ahead of me from the beginning, folded. He was first pitched forward by his knees, then backward by his neck. My short thick legs were never much for hurdle jumps, but in a moment of divine inspiration, they lifted me over him like the Pi at the Grand National. He was the last one I saw fall, because from then until I passed the finish line at 04:02:58, arms raised, and sprinted into the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, I didn’t look back again. I also never dreaded an age milestone again, having since passed forty, fifty, and fifty-five. I suppose it is because finishing that marathon was itself a milestone for me, one far more significant than reaching a birthday. Finishing that race was something I never really thought I could do, until that quake woke me, literally and figuratively.
I still encounter limitations in my life. But now I see them as nothing more than items on my “To Do” list that I will get to, or not. And beyond looking forward to a really big party, the prospect of turning sixty is no earth shaker. Milestones are
for marking the living, not the life.

Cream has always been characterized for its innovation and boldness since we do things differently here, and this edition our concept consisted of giving our readers a taste of the life of 15 different people from Laredo who are making their dreams come true in the Big Apple. It was incredible to do all the photo sessions in a single day, but the results were amazing, and it was, without a doubt, one of my favorite experiences in the magazine.
For this edition, we combined ballet with key geographic points in both Laredos, and brought along a group of girls from local academies that demonstrated that their love for dance was cultivated at an early age.

Our first issue is the most special of all. A world of uncertainty, but at the same time a great trust and faith of opening with a big splash; and it definitely lived up to the expectations! It was a great event. Cream’s first anniversary was a monumental challenge! We decided to take pictures of 100 people from all around the city and from all races, backgrounds, religions, etc. It was quite the odyssey, and we even went to Plaza San Agustín to snap some photos of the people passing by there. The end result was incredible, and we were able to capture and showcase the portraits of 100 people from our beloved city.

Being a mother is a precious gift that women all around the world hold dear to their hearts. It entails more than to changing diapers and singing along kiddie songs; it means that we have a new priority in our lives, something bigger than a social life, a polished image, and sometimes even a decent sleep cycle. Despite all hardships and bumps along the road, nothing compares to holding that little person in your arms at the end of the day. rowing up in a culturally and religiously conservative environment, I naturally developed negative misconceptions and prejudices about people with tattoos. It was not until my son’s decision to get tattooed that I turned a critical eye to not only their meanings and significance, but to the people themselves.Through conversations with my son, I began to think beyond the colors and lines that adorned people’s skins. I know I raised a good person and a caring man, and therefore, there was no reason why others could not be the same. I sought out everyday people whom we encounter in everyday situations with one commonality: they were all professionals and had body art. I spoke to them at length about their reasons and motivations for getting their tattoos as well as their professions and how their tattoos may have affected them; then I invited them to a photo session to better portray them on canvas. My interviews soon became dialogues where I shared my preconceived notions of tattoos and the kinds of people who had them. Our conversations began to break down many of my blinders and allowed me to see beyond their adorned bodies. I was now able to see what lies beneath.

She has had a fascination with drawing since childhood; she would turn every school assignment into a work of art. Her dream was always to become an artist. Rogelio De la Garza is having the time of his life and has become a skilled multitasker as he dives into all the new challenges his experience abroad brings. Take a moment to find out about Rogelio’s journey below!
What is the most challenging part of having a college life? Dealing with course hours, homework, and exams while having a job. I also like to spend time with friends and family so it was challenging to keep up with everything at the same time. Is attending school in a different country something distressing or exciting? Even though it’s distressing at times, it’s more exciting. You meet new people every day and you realize there are actually more cultures out there to be discovered and that is very exciting. How do you feel about the changes that can happen during college? As we all know, people change throughout time. These changes that have happened to me during college are probably the most exciting I’m going to experience in my life. It’s the stage where you separate the good from the bad. Do you feel like these upcoming months studying abroad will impact your life goals? Definitely. It opens your eyes to so many other cultures and unique ways of living. Different languages, practices, and even simple ways to interact with people are all things that I will take back home. How has your family life been affected now that you are in another country? My parents wanted me to get out of the house already! I’m joking. They were actually very excited about me coming to study abroad. They knew it was for the best. Anything else you want to share with us? If you have the opportunity to get out of your country, your twenties are the right time to do it. As you get older you will have more responsibilities and it will become harder. So get out, travel, and live your life!

Imagination Station Imaginarium of South Texas to Honor Contributors at Gala

n the early 80s, the Imaginarium began as a place where children could learn through hands-on experiences versus the traditional behind the glass museum model. A group of educators and concerned citizens came together to establish goals and determine the direction and feasibility of such a museum. Our first home was on the campus of Laredo Community College and we opened our doors as The Laredo Children’s Museum, in 2007, we adopted a new name to better describe our goals in the community and became the Imaginarium of South Texas. Now, the mission of the Imaginarium is to provide a bicultural, creative learning experience to local and outof-town families primarily through hands-on exhibits that nurture individual sense of inquiry and that inspire youth with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM).
