ABOUT
The Research and Documentation Centre for Technology, Architecture and City in developing Countries (CRD-PVS), founded within the Politecnico di Torino, established its own constitution in 2003. The Centre encourages research activities focused on habitat improvement in extreme conditions, such as climate or social emergency, and promotes science awareness initiatives (seminars, lectures, workshops, seminars etc.). It further offers a postgraduate education course adressed to architects and engineers interested in working within developing and emerging Countries projects. Moreover, CRD-PVS participates in programs of international and technical cooperation in partnership with International Non-Governmental Organizations. A documentation on habitat-related topics in developing and emerging countries is available at CRD-PVS specialized library.

In the sixties prof. Giorgio Ceragioli started to promote initiatives, research and collaborations in the field of Architecture and Cooperation. Between 1969 and 1972, he launched free courses about building industrialization in extreme conditions and social housing in developing Countries. In 1988, under his leadership, the school of specialization in “Technology, Architecture and City in developing Countries” (TAC) was inaugurated: it has been a point of maturity and exchange at the international level. Since 1996, the direction of the school was entrusted by prof. Massimo Foti, then by prof. Nuccia Maritano Comoglio. From 2003 to 2014, the school has given way to the post-graduated course in “Habitat, technology and development” (HTD). During the years many others people cooperated with the team. The common thread has always been the constant attention to the issues of habitat and development in research, teaching, testing in the lab, looking for a convergence between the ideal choices and the operational field.

RESEARCH
The main subjects covered by the CRD-PVS are low-cost building technologies, self-help housing, use of natural materials in building construction, environmental science and bioclimatic design in harsh climate, regeneration of marginal urban areas and rehabilitation of architectural heritage in developing countries, global housing quality assessment, disaster risk management and information and communication technologies. These subjects are also developed within the PostGraduated School and BArch and MSc courses. Research is carried out within university research programs, or sponsored by the European Commission, by National and International Organizations, NGOs local bodies or in the framework of inter-universities agreements.

The CRD-PVS is involved in different projects, as coordinator or partner. The aim is to provide local communities or with tools useful for development. Projects are the result of collaborations between many partners, including local organizations and associations: CBOs, the Academia, SMEs, Governmental bodies, NGOs, International Organizations.

Crowdmapping Mirafiori Sud Watch. Talk. Share Turin, Italy

The aim of the project is to identify and communicate, with the participation of the residents and thanks to the use of new technologies, the barriers (physical and cultural) that prevent residents from making use of the public space in the Mirafiori Sud district. The information gathered, processed and classified, is made available through an online platform. Citizens are active parties: using crowdmap, the opensource tool created by Ushahidi, everyone can send by mobile phone problems, proposals and the things that work well in their district, thus feeding a process of complete and transparent participation. MiraMap is a project that promotes social innovation through the use of new digital technologies by involving residents and public officials in a signaling process of resource problems and potentials of the area through a collavorative digital platform. It is an experimental research project from the department of Architecture and Design of Politecnico di Torino with help of the community, Mirafiori Sud district and the government of the City of Turin.

Imagine a neighbourhood that connects the city with the fields not only physically but also from the cultural, philosophical and environmental perspective. This will be the agriculture and food production district in Turin (Italy), where people will be living in a farming oriented urban realm. One narrow area of the FIAT, one of the biggest car factory of the World, in the Mirafiori plant, devoted to production stock parking, has been working as a second barrier to the expansion and integration of the South Mirafiori neighbourhood with the City. Now it has the chance to provide Turin with a new model of urban life.

Tempus IV 3D Design pour le développement durable des productions artisanales locales EU / Tunisia

The project 3D Design pour le développement durable is co-founded by the Tempus Programme of the European Union. It developed a Master’s Program for the training of a designer that works for the development of the Tunisian production system – made up of small businesses, often artisanal – through the introduction of innovation elements at the project level and ongoing production with the territory’s traditions. It is coordinated by Univesità degli Studi di Firenze

TRAINING
Education and training has always been one of the main activity at CRD-PVS. From 1969 and 1972 Giorgio Ceragioli coordinated free courses at BArch and MSc. In 1988 was established the School of Specialization, followed in 2003 by the Postgraduate Course. During the Academic Year, seminars and lectures are regularly scheduled. The Centre also organizes “learning by doing� workshops, in Italy and abroad, in partnership with local authorities, academic institutions, International and Non-Governmental Organizations. The CRD-PVS Alumni now counts on a network of more than 250 participants from all over the world.

The aim of the postgraduate course is to provide both technological and professional qualification and to infuse deep knowledge on operational methods and techniques for regenerating degraded neighbourhoods, preserving architectural and environmental heritage and fostering new building projects in developing countries. The Course is managed in cooperation with national and international institutions and non-governmental organizations. Participants attend in person classes, seminars and practical activities. TRAINING Costruire con la comunità (Building with community) A self-built Micro-Regional Centre to foster food security Oaxaca, Mexico

“Building with community” is a cooperation project with the UNAM (Universidad Autonoma de Mexico) and the Archintorno Association. It is part of a bigger programme that the C.A.M.P.O NGO is working on, since 2009, with the objective of creating technological innovation processes trough the “pisè constructive technique” transfer. The aim is a sustainable local development in the indigenous communities of the Mexican region Oaxaca. After a workshop with the students, a Microregional Center in the rural village of Pensamiento Liberal Mexicano was built. 23.000 € This worskhop had two objectives, developing a press for straw balls and a housing prototype with straw bales that could adapt to Haiti’s context. It was carried out in collaboration with Architettura senza Frontiere Piemonte ONLUS, CISV (Comunità Impegno Servizio Volontario) and TNE (Torino Nuova Economia), thanks to the financial contribution from Politecnico di Torino for students’ activities. It involved students from architecture and engineering.

The first part of the workshop was devoted to the design of the straw bale press and of the housing prototype. In the second part of the workshop both the press and the prototype had been realized. The students created a construction diary to record all of the process of this workshop and use it as a guide, they would use it every day.
The construction of the housing prototype started on November 23 and was done on January 21.

The aim of the workshop was to build an emergency living unit built of bamboo made by individual elements contained in a box (container size) reusable as flooring. The project design criterias were prefabrication, self construction, modularity and development opportunity, with possibility to transform it in a permanent settlement. Three workshops of five days was attended by ten students, who have realized all the elements needed for the construction of the housing module for the emergency.

LIBRARY
The CRD-PVS library was created to provide a documentation service on technology, architecture and city issues in developing Countries. The library collects 6000 items, including papers, articles, thesis and reviews in Italian, English, French, Spanish and Portuguese, catalogued according to emerging countries related-themes. All materials are available at CRD-PVS and can borrowed through a dedicated loan system. Items are at the disposal of students, professors, researchers, scholars, consultants, public and private bodies and anyone interested in approaching the addressed themes. In 1993, CRD-PVS established an agreement with Regione Piemonte for the implementation of AgorĂ Piemonte, a Local Information System on Peace, Cooperation and International Solidarity (http:// agora.regione.piemonte.it), a telematic archive joining over twenty documentation centers (such as OIL-BIT, CESMEO, CISV, CICSENE, CSA, MSP,...). This web boasts a documentary heritage of more than 69.000 titles. 39
