Message from the Headmaster

It has been an energetic and purposeful week across the whole school. There has been focus on providing skills and experiences which enhance curriculum learning through Elevate for our Year 10 pupils. The session covered effective note taking, being organised, making use of exam board information, and dividing tasks into achievable steps. As part of Internet Safety Week, our community had opportunities to explore how to stay safe, respectful, and responsible online. Wednesday’s assembly focused on AI, an ever-increasing presence in today’s world. Collaboration and leadership were also promoted across the senior school with all pupils enjoying interactive teambuilding workshops.

Parents and students of History in Years 10 and 11, who will be visiting Munich in the half term holiday, learnt more about the trip which will provide a fantastic opportunity to augment their understanding of the GCSE syllabus and experience the culture. Year 11 Geographers ventured out on fieldwork in East London, studying urban landscapes first-hand. On Thursday evening, the Year 10 and 11 pupils and their families had the opportunity to attend the EST Sixth Form Open Evening to see the wonderful new facilities as they look towards the future of their educational journey.

As we ended the week, pupils celebrated the European Day of Languages. They embraced different languages and cultures through lessons, challenges, and fun activities.

Year 10 Study Session with Elevate Education

It isn’t enough that pupils simply understand what they need to do in their study; the challenge is to enable them to use and apply the skills they learn and be self-reflective, as they develop their intellect.

Year 10 took part in a very instructive study session entitled ‘Study Sensei’ on Wednesday this week. The session was the fourth in a series, which follows:

Study Skills in Year 7

Time Management in Year 8

Memory Mnemonics in Year 9

Pupils were advised to make detailed notes, keep work organised and make full use of exam boards specifications, as well as breaking tasks into manageable chunks. A timeline for revision was considered, breaking down the final weeks before an assessment into specific tasks.

Feedback from pupils was very positive. Pupil comments included:

“I would rate it 10/10 as it was very useful to learn the best ways to revise.” Toby

“The most important thing things I learned were how to retain information as time goes on and to add colour coding to notes.” Sam

Next autumn, in Year 11, these pupils will take part in their final session: ‘Ace your Exams’.

Teambuilding for Years 7 to 11

Senior pupils took part in a variety of exciting and engaging team building activities on Thursday. Being able to work as part of a team is a valuable skill and we reinforce this message early on in the school year so that our pupils remember it throughout the year.

The activities included: Stepping Stones, Sky Scraper, Key Code, Toxic, Skis, Ball Run, Global Warming, Deep Sea and Maze.

Pupil feedback was overwhelmingly positive:

“It was great fun and helped our communication skills.” Edmund and Rafe

“It was very difficult to move around on the skis, but it was a good challenge.” Ben

European Day of Languages

Today is the European Day of Languages. Pupils have been enjoying a wide range of activities at lunchtimes throughout the week, including: a Duolingo competition, several quizzes, a German taster lesson, a film, a photo booth and the EDL Hello Competition. It was a wonderful celebration of languages designed to increase our pupils’ enthusiasm for learning languages and immersing themselves in different cultures.

Last weekend, we had six Cranmore ski teams competing at the English Schools Regionals. Our experienced skiers and first-time competitors all did an amazing job. Incredibly, three teams have qualified for the ESSKIA National Finals in Norwich. Good luck to all!

This week, there have been many fixtures and events taking place across several sports. Highlights include our cross-country team performing superbly at the Surrey Haskell Cup, Cranmore's top squash player Omar S (Yr 11) beat the UK U18 20th seeded player in a fixture against KCS; our U13 football team won 9-0 in the latest round of the Surrey Cup; and our U16 rugby team beat Gordon's with the final play 22-21 in the National Cup.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

A reading from the Book of Genesis

Then God said: “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. Let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and the cattle, and over all the wild animals and all the creatures that crawl on the ground.” God created man in his image; in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them, saying: “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things that move on the earth.” God looked at everything he had made, and he found it very good.

Reflection

This week we reflect on the theme of Creation. What a beautiful world we live in. A world of variety, connectivity and colour. Pope Francis wrote about how Creation was an action of Hope. God has hope in the world and He has hope in us. Let us be people of Hope and seek to become good stewards over all that has been entrusted to us.

Protecting Creation, Pope Francis explains, "It is not only an ethical issue, but one that is eminently theological, for it is the point where the mystery of man and the mystery of God intersect."

Prayer

All powerful God, you are present in the universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with your peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one.

Amen ‘Let us protect Christ in our lives, so that we can protect others, so that we can protect creation!’ Pope Francis
