Message from the Headmaster

At the end of last week, our Year 10 and 11 Drama GCSE pupils thoroughly enjoyed a visit London to watch a performance of Blood Brothers at the New Wimbledon Theatre. It was an opportunity to appreciate the characters associated with their course and reflect on their own performance skills.

The World Scholar's Cup regional round concluded on Monday evening at St Teresa's. It is an ideal opportunity for boys and girls from across the Trust to come together and compete at both an individual and a group level, celebrating their love of learning. The Cranmore pupils performed incredibly well, winning multiple medals, excelling in a variety of disciplines and qualifying for the global round. Well done to all those pupils who took part in this exciting two-day event.

On Tuesday, Year 7 attended a Lenten workshop at Wintershall, an opportunity to be together as a year group and explore the meaning of this key event in the liturgical year.

I would like to congratulate all those pupils who competed in the Surrey and National competitions in both hockey and rugby this week. There were numerous outstanding victories that reflected the desire and ability of our pupils to perform at the highest level.

World Scholars Cup

St Teresa's hosted the World Scholars Cup London-Surrey regional round for the fifth year in a row. However, it was the first time that teams from all three schools within the Effingham Schools Trust participated. Over 170 students and 20 teachers arrived early on Sunday morning to battle it out in either the junior or senior division in the four events of the competition. By the end of the first day, students in teams of three had completed the Team Debate, Collaborative Writing and Scholars' Challenge events.

Students returned on Monday to compete in the Scholars' Bowl in the morning, followed by the debate showcase in the afternoon. The closing ceremony saw the presentation of awards. Most of our teams have qualified for the global round, and a trip is being planned to Ljubljana, Slovenia in July to participate. Well done to all of our pupils who took part!

Book Week Quiz for Years 9 and 10

Years 9 and 10 enjoyed participating in our Book Week Book Quiz in the Auditorium on Thursday 6th March. They were challenged to show their knowledge of classic novels, the fantasy genre, famous first lines of novels and a music round linked to books.

Year 8 PSHE Talk about the Dangers of Alcohol

On Wednesday morning, Year 8 were addressed by our School nurses, Mrs Berry and Mrs Norris, on the topic of alcohol. This supports Year 8’s current learning in PSHE lessons about drugs, including alcohol; managing risk and scenarios involving drugs and alcohol, and first aid. Year 8 listened attentively and answered questions about the impacts of alcohol on developing bodies and brains.

Congratulations to this talented Year 7 pianist, Nino L, who played a piece from

so brilliantly during senior assembly.

Year 7 Lenten Retreat at Wintershall

On Tuesday, all of Year 7 took part in a Lenten Retreat morning at Wintershall. We arrived at around 9.20am. The weather was kind; it was cold but bright and pleasant. Throughout the morning pupils walked through the grounds of the Wintershall Estate, met the donkeys and experienced some very good dramas on the Life of Christ. We also took part in a number of Lenten reflections based on the Stations of the Cross. It was a fantastic, reflective morning. Pupils enjoyed getting out of school, feeling the sun on their faces and being able to pause and pray.

A Message from our Chaplaincy Team

This Week

A Reading from the Gospel of Matthew

Jesus said to his disciples, 'Be careful not to parade your good deeds before men to attract their notice; by doing this you will lose all reward from your Father in Heaven. So when you give alms, do not have it trumpeted before you; this is what the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win men's admiration. I tell you solemnly, they have had their reward. But when you give alms, your left hand must not know what your right is doing; your almsgiving must be secret, and your Father who sees all that is done in secret will reward you.

Reflection

The season of Lent seems to go beyond our natural inclinations: to give things up, to go without. Yet Lent, this six week time of preparation, is a time of renewal; it is a time to take stock of our lives, to think about giving up anything that is perhaps drawing us away from God and to take up things that can draw us closer to the one who created us. In our modern way of life , much can distract us from the divine who resides in us and who speaks to us. This Lent, take time to listen to the voice that reminds us that we are loved; we are made in His sacred image and we have a purpose.

Prayer

Lord,

In this holy season of Lent, may we turn back to you with all our hearts, in prayer, in fasting, and in giving alms to the poor; that our sins be forgiven and our hearts mended.

Amen

"Pray, hope and don't worry.

Anxiety doesn't help at all.

Our Merciful Lord will listen to your prayer."
