HEADMASTER’S INTRODUCTION MR MARTIN READER

Cranleigh Thinking often begins with a question to provoke dialogue in a classroom. My lesson opener is: can we choose our memories? Can we choose what we remember?

Can we choose what we forget?

My short answer is that I think we can, and I think we do. What we choose to record in our archives is proof of that.

Do we want to forget the insights of lockdown, determined to do things with a reawakened purpose to make a difference to our community and the world, or are we just going to keep on doing things the same way?

Are we going to think differently, be different, give of ourselves more generously?

When I reflect on 2019-20, I remember the heart-thumping joy when the First XV lifted the Daily Mail Trophy — the best rugby team in England; the head-in-the-hands-can’tbear-to-look-last-ditch-defence at Bromsgrove, before the relief of victory for the U16 girls as they became the first Cranleigh hockey team to defend a national title. Riders and skiers returned with winner’s rosettes and medals, and an OC got his maiden test century. I remember the beautiful chords of Lina Mazzone’s piano concerto, the power of Toby Escolme’s performance the sheer quality of acting in the challenging and prophetic King Charles III and the exuberance of a We Will Rock You performance just at the time when we needed it most.

I remember with pride the opening of Martlet, our fourth girls’ boarding house, with more girls in the School than ever before as we marked 20 years of co-education; and the CCF inspection with the cadets looking the best drilled and most enthusiastic I have seen as they marked their 120th anniversary.

I remember speaking in Chengdu and Changsha not quite believing that we were announcing the opening of two new Cranleigh schools in China and later that week talking with the first Cranleigh Abu Dhabi Upper Sixth; soon to become the first Cranleigh Abu Dhabi Old Cranleighans.

I will never forget the feelings of frustration, injustice and then confidence that a very special group of Upper Sixth had gained A Level results that truly reflected their abilities and efforts, knowing that that a week later the same would be true of the Upper Fifth. Nor will I forget the admiration I felt for the way all the pupils handled such a challenging time.

And we must all indelibly mark the incredible efforts and skills of Cranleigh staff who managed to produce engaging, often innovative lessons and activities as well as Chapel services and house and charity events remotely.

The spirit of Cranleigh remained alive and well.

But above all I remember a group of Upper Sixth who fulfilled beyond expectation the challenge set for them at the beginning of the year to be a different type of leader and take responsibility for the changes they wanted to make to set the tone for future culture.

The Cranleigh Eco group, Cranleigh Being, Alliance, Senior Prefects leading our alliance with Black Lives Matter, all had a remarkable impact, and two courageous young men stood up and confronted us all with uncomfortable truths about homophobia.

Because our Upper Sixth could not leave as they and we would wish, they will undoubtedly feel forgotten. Yet their successes and their willingness to choose a new course, lead themselves and lead others will be their long-lasting legacy. We owe it to them to build on the momentum they started and to choose to remember and act upon what we learned in lockdown.

CRANLEIGH GIVING We started 2020 with a bang when our Spectacular Summer Ball tickets went on sale and over 600 tickets flew out of the door!

The Ball raises much needed funds for the Cranleigh Foundation, a fund which finances places at both schools to children who have a significant pastoral need and who would benefit from a nurturing boarding environment. Our last ball was held in 2016 and raised £90,000 and the omens were good that the 2020 Ball would be just as successful. But COVID-19 then struck and, much to our disappointment, we had no choice but to postpone the Ball. We hope to host it in 2021, subject to social distancing guidelines, and for now I look forward to a time when we can all be together to celebrate coming through this unsettling time.

During the year, we built on the successful launch of Cranleigh Friends, a group which embraces the entire Cranleigh family that brings together current parents, parents of OCs, former staff as well as our friends in the wider community. We began a programme of events and activities, such as coffee mornings for Fourth Form parents, decorating the School Chapels for Harvest Festival and Christmas, and a professional networking reception for medics. However, as with the Ball, we had to pause these activities during the pandemic.

However, the Cranleigh spirit of collective generosity continues to be in evidence. There is much to report in terms of the philanthropy of the Cranleigh-wide community, both in terms of gifts of money as well as gifts in kind. In 2019-20, our pupils raised over £20,000 for a wide variety of charities and causes, such as the Australian wildfires disaster fund, the Cranleigh Riding for the Disabled Association, Labour Behind the Label, the Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Unit at the Royal Surrey County Hospital.

Pupils and their families raised £41,000 for the School’s partner charity in Zambia, Beyond Ourselves.

We held our tenth Cranleigh Christmas Fair and raised almost £19,000 through a combination of door sales, raffle tickets, stallholder fees, sponsorship and advertising in our brochure. I am hugely grateful to the Christmas Fair Committee for organising yet another feat of logistical ingenuity.

Seven families donated the balance of their deposit to the Cranleigh Foundation and another 12 families donated the value of their child’s scholarship to the Foundation. Two thirds of parents across both schools continue to support the Foundation through their termly levy and this year raised £183,000, an amazing amount given the challenging times in which we live. These kind acts of generosity serve as a reminder of how the Cranleigh community is willing to share its good fortune for the benefit of others.

During the year we were grateful to receive a substantial legacy from OC, John Oram (East, 1936-40).

Together, Cranleigh has once again stepped up to make a difference. The School rolled up its collective sleeves to help the surrounding neighbourhood when lockdown fell. Staff volunteers ran multi-activity camps for the children of key workers on our site, our Design Engineering team supplied Perspex for visors for community NHS teams, and our Science department donated 100 pairs of goggles and 850 disposable gloves to Cranleigh medical centre. We are very grateful to those parents who donated the summer term’s fee discount to the Schools COVID-19 Relief Fund.

I’m proud that all these initiatives demonstrate that, whatever the challenges, Cranleigh reaches out to lend a hand to those in need. I look forward to building on this culture of giving in the years ahead.

FROM THE DEPUTIES I once picked up a scorpion by accident, mistaking it for a curled fragment of shoelace on the floor of the Montpellier apartment where I lived. A defining moment unfortunately; my screams bouncing off the whitewashed walls and echoing still in the corridors of my memory. We are truest to ourselves, as is often said, in times of adversity.

What did you do in the adversity of lockdown? It is perhaps the defining question of this generation, and whilst history will doubtless be forgiving to those for whom the answer is simply ‘playing a lot of Xbox’, the response of so many Cranleighans — teenage and adult — was upbeat, heart-warming, and at times both inspirational and humbling.

In an exemplary case of leadership by example, a number of colleagues found creative ways to bridge the gap imposed by distance learning. An early fit of inspiration led Mr Phil Leamon to commit to providing a daily dose of email ‘nonsense’, a lighthearted yet informative course of breakfast reading cited by many pupils as a highlight of the lockdown months. Those teachers whose single-day guest-hosting of the missive reduced them to nervous wrecks applauded in genuine admiration at the end of term as Phil trudged gratefully over the finish-line like a man who months earlier had optimistically agreed to run the marathon in a deep-sea diving suit.

So too, the Reverend Tim Lewis, who deprived of his usual BC (before Covid-19) congregation rapidly upskilled and then appeared on our morning screens in an increasingly expert and eye-catching series of Chapel videos: now appearing from his kitchen table with cow ears emerging from his head, only to appear subsequently from shrubbery on the Surrey Hills, and once from the organ-loft dressed as a rapper?

Likewise, the utterly brilliant Summer Concert — the best I saw from any school over lockdown — a musical quilt painstakingly stitched together by Mr Richard Saxel, Mr George Royall and their teams. Orchestral music, choirs, and ensembles that had apparently been dealt a fatal blow by the government restrictions miraculously breathed into life again. And at the other side of each screen, at the end of each fibre-optic cable, a pupil performing, connecting with us.

The essence of teaching — actually, the essence of humanity — has always resided in that connection with others, a life-thread seemingly shut down by shut-down. And yet the human spirit prevails and finds a way. The various activities and achievements outlined on the following pages are demonstrative of that can-do spirit, and I can only look on with wonder at the ways in which Cranleighans overcame the limitations of the day and found their voice.

In the many warming examples of pluck and cheerfulness in times of crisis it would be remiss not to single out the quite outstanding leadership of Kitty Clements, Oliver Corbett and the rest of the Upper Sixth, a year group who by conventional measures stood to lose everything they had worked towards: their exams, their plays, their sport, and their music. Every Sixth Form milestone, every party and every ceremony will forever be coloured by the tarnish of this year. And yet not once in the many conversations I had with those pupils did I ever hear the plaintive cry of it’s not fair. Instead we were overwhelmed by offerings of help, support, and guidance … a masterclass of engagement, stoicism and enthusiasm. This is then, a year group that will look back with rather more pride than me on how they handled the scorpions of their youth.

FROM THE DEPUTIES This time last year, I sat down to write my Cranleighan article, feeling genuinely excited about the fact that we were celebrating our 20th year of full co-education alongside opening our fourth girls’ house, Martlet. Tori Turner (nee Lyle) an OC who was an Upper Sixth Form pupil in my first year of teaching at Cranleigh (20 years ago!), and is now a fighter pilot in the RAF, gave an inspirational speech at the official opening of Martlet, and made a lovely evening all the more special. Martlet was the final piece in the co-educational jigsaw for Cranleigh; having four boys’ houses and four girls’ houses has enabled us to fully embrace our co-educational house affiliation system. Prior to lockdown, the Housemistresses and Housemasters worked extremely hard to offer a range of academic, co-curricular and social co-educational opportunities based around these affiliations, bringing to fruition our plans to cement our status as a mature co-educational boarding school.

In tandem with this, it has been increasingly evident that many more of our students want to genuinely engage in working both with staff and their peers to make Cranleigh an even better place in terms of tolerance and acceptance. The most impressive example of pupil leadership that I have ever witnessed (in 24 years of teaching) happened just before lockdown. Macca Garlick and Henry Mould gave a talk to the entire school on the subject of homophobia. It would be fair to say that one could have heard a pin drop, such was the intensity of focus from the pupils who were listening to one of the most impactful talks I have ever heard within a school community. Their peer, Ella Job had given an equally impressive talk on rape culture the year before, so the momentum for positive change and student-led activism was building.

In a world that seems increasingly divisive, with extremes of opinion, hate speech and fake news becoming almost the norm, I felt that Cranleigh was somehow bucking this trend. Where empathy has been lacking globally, it felt that Cranleighan’s were embracing it. Conversations were challenging but, at all times, worthwhile. There was so much to be excited about.

Then lockdown happened, and all of our plans for the Summer term stalled. Nonetheless, our conversations continued to happen. Technology enabled the debates to continue, and I was so impressed by the number of students who remained actively

engaged in coming up with ideas to make Cranleigh an even better place. The pupils leading the Cranleigh Being and Alliance committees were central to these conversations and it has been fantastic to see them start to put some of these initiatives into place. Next year they will be running a range of initiatives all encouraging Cranleighans to commit to #BeTheChange needed in society to make the world a better place, in terms of tolerance, acceptance and in looking after the environment. Student leadership in all of these areas is thriving and I feel sure that this generation of Sixth Form leaders will leave Cranleigh knowing they have made it an even better place than it was when they joined.

Being away from school for so long was challenging for many of our students, and staff. To make things as normal as possible, and in keeping with how we managed the academic part of school life, we decided to do the same with the pastoral part of school life. As boarding is at the heart of a student’s Cranleigh experience, we decided that this should remain the case. The House teams continued to run their houses almost as normal, no mean feat in the absence of students. Callovers, socials, House Prayers, charity events and increasingly imaginative housebased challenges all continued to take place, enabling the vast majority of our students to remain connected to their boarding house. The feeling of still being part of their boarding ‘family’ was hugely important to many of our students, particularly for their mental health and wellbeing.

In terms of how our students handled being at home for such an extended period of time, they far exceeded any of our expectations. Even our Upper Sixth and Upper Fifth, who faced a particularly challenging set of circumstances, managed to stay focused and upbeat until their final lessons. They did everything we asked of them and more. Mr Boggitt wrote to them regularly about academic matters and one email he wrote has stuck in my memory because he signed it off with this: Work hard, support each other and do your very best. In short, be Cranleighans.

That short sentence encapsulates, I think, what it truly means to be a Cranleighan, and I hope this continues to be the case for the generations of Cranleighans to come.

Despite the curtailing of the academic year, Cranleigh still enjoyed considerable academic success. Scarlett Schutte came second in the prestigious Modern and Medieval Languages essay competition run by Newnham College, Cambridge. Sophie Roome was placed second in the National Portrait Gallery’s ‘Bright Young Things’ Photography Competition, with her photograph that was chosen from over 1000 entries. In the Intermediate Maths Challenge, there were 37 medals (of which 12 were Gold) and 14 students qualified for a follow-on round. In the Senior Maths Challenge our students achieved 19 medals of which four were Gold. Jessica Cheng qualified for the British Mathematical Olympiad and Andy Kim, Issy Lock and Penny Zhao qualified for a follow-on round. In the Intermediate Biology Olympiad there were 14 medallists in total, with Floss Esplen and Macca Garlick achieving Gold, Jody Taylor a Silver medal and Naalini Bird a Bronze.

In the British Biology Olympiad there were 16 Upper Sixth medallists in total, with Joseph Shou achieving Gold, placing him in the top 6% of students in the country. Ella Job achieved a Silver medal and Leila Slade a Bronze. The success of the VEX Robotics team continued: both teams qualified for the National finals this year, scooping three tournament champion trophies along the way and with Cranleigh Racing, the Greenpower electric race car team won the ‘Best Newcomers’ award at the Dunsfold heat, the team consisting of Georgia Alexander, Josh Bartels, Lulu Bryn-Jones, Finlay Galbraith, George Porter and Max Schutte.

This was an A-Level results day like no other, I very much hope. As a School we had done exactly what Ofqual asked for, namely submitted Centre Assessed Grades as the most likely grade, then ranks within those grades. Exam boards had been instructed to moderate these grades by subject. The mutant algorithm — that our Prime Minister has since called it — quite simply savaged these grades, both at Cranleigh and nationally. About 40% of our Centre Assessed Grades were lowered, with a number by more than one grade. The national outcry was with one voice: the algorithm was an unmitigated disaster, producing diabolically unfair grades in so many cases. My colleagues were hard at work building cases for appeals and we then heard that mock results could be used as part of an appeal. This was then almost immediately withdrawn. Finally, after a further 48 hours of radio silence from the Government, we heard about the U-turn and the decision to revert to Centre Assessed Grades at both A Level and GCSE.

At A Level, our A* was 22%, A*/A 58% and A*-B an excellent 85%. Over a third of this cohort achieved three or more A*/A, with well over two-thirds of the cohort achieving all A*-B. A particular well done to: Ella Job who achieved A*, A*, A*, D2, as well as Sophie Grossmith, Freya Johnson, Seni Luca-Daniels, Jia Huang Mao, Jess McCormack, Josh Moore, Henry Mould, Joseph Shou and Aimee Williamson who achieved three or more A* (or equivalent). With 88 students entered for the EPQ this year, the grades (marked and moderated, not Centre Assessed Grades) were our best ever, with 25% A*, over 50% A*-A and over 80% A*-B.

IT’S BEEN A DIFFICULT FEW MONTHS AND I SUSPECT WE HAVE SOME MORE DIFFICULT MONTHS AHEAD, BUT I AM GIVEN STRENGTH KNOWING THAT I AM PART OF A FANTASTIC, SUPPORTIVE AND DEDICATED COMMUNITY

This year Cranleigh processed university applications from 122 students (both pre- and post A Level) of whom 102 obtained places at their first-choice university. The remainder have, variously, found a place at their insurance choice or through Clearing, opted to re-apply next year or decided not to go to university. Of those gaining places, 77% will be going to Russell Group or equivalent universities. The most popular destinations this year, by some distance, were Exeter (15 students) and Durham (11 students) — over a quarter of all applicants are going to one of these two universities. The most popular subject areas were Business (18 students), Politics and International Relations (11 students), Geography (nine students) and English (eight students). A huge congratulations to Archie O’Neil who will take up a place studying Ancient History at Oxford. An equally huge well done to our North American applicants: all three Ivy League applicants gained admission (to Brown, Cornell and Dartmouth), whilst we had a student receive a full scholarship to play field hockey at Michigan and an Old Cranleighan gain admission to McGill, the most academically prestigious university in Canada.

Before the Government U-turn, the media were doing their very best to hype the expected exam board moderation and I really felt for our Upper Fifth who were reading this and aware of what had happened to A-Level results.

In the end, it’s a huge well done to our Upper Fifth on their outstanding results, achieving 48% grade 9-8, 70% grade 9-7 and 96% grade 9-5. Almost half of the cohort achieved eight or more grade 9-7 and 39% of the cohort achieved nine or more grade 9-7. Six pupils achieved straight grade 9s: Naalini Bird, Mathilda Bown, Max Coveney, Tom Nicholas, Boau-Lilly Shepherd and Eliza Wheeler. A further 11 pupils achieved 10 or more grade 9/8s.

The Government’s lack of clarity, the mutant algorithm and the eventual U-turn should not distract from what is an impressive set of grades at both A Level and GCSE and I am very proud of our students. It’s been a difficult few months and I suspect we have some more difficult months ahead, but I am given strength knowing that I am part of a fantastic, supportive and dedicated community.

STATS AND FACTS | GCSE As all examinations were cancelled following the outbreak of COVID-19, teachers were required to make a judgement of the grade they believed a pupil would have most likely achieved under exam conditions. These centre assessed grades (CAGs) were size = 34 x then submitted through the examining bodies’ external standardisation and finally, 34mm after much uncertainty the final grade awarded was the school’s centre assessed grade unless the standardisation produced a higher result. Under difficult circumstances the cohort achieved outstanding GCSE results, with 24% of all grades a 9 and 48% of all grades being 9/8. 100 per cent of students gained five or more GCSEs at 9 to 4 grade and 79% of all pupils achieved 9-7 in the core subjects of Maths and English. Remarkably, 60% of the cohort achieved seven or more grades 9-7 and 40% of the cohort achieved an outstanding nine or more grades 9-7. Six pupils achieved straight grade 9s and a further nine pupils achieved all 9-8.

STATS AND FACTS | A LEVELS AND EPQ The Government cancelled all summer exams as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, which meant students were required to participate in remote learning programmes rather than study at school. Grades awarded this year were based on school assessment.

A-Level results in this non-examination year were excellent, with 85% of grades at A*-B and an overall pass rate of 100%. Over half of our students gained A*/A in two or more subjects, with over 70% achieving all A*-B. Before the lockdown commenced in March, Cranleigh announced sizeset = 34 x 34mm Project Qualification (EPQ) results for the same year group. another excellent of Extended Most Sixth Formers at Cranleigh take an EPQ alongside studying for three A Levels. This year’s results were outstanding, with 81% of all EPQs graded at A*-B in the assessment window before lockdown.

PURVIS SOCIETY HENRY MOULD, PURVIS SECRETARY

This year, the vast majority of the Sixth Form Purvis Society meetings were held by students on topics which interested them. This proved to be a great success and allowed us to have many intellectual, thought-provoking and dare I say even fun student-led discussions. We started off the year with a couple of discussions on the theme ‘Why do we ever bother doing anything?’ First by Mr Rothwell and then by Henry Mould who looked at the question from a more biological angle. These meetings had pretty severe consequences for us as individuals, in the respect, we couldn’t answer the question. What is the point?! we concluded. Our discussions then moved on to some more classic but timeless questions ranging from free speech (Olly Witts) to the age-old political questions of communism versus capitalism (Jacopo Bonus) and the Israel/Palestine conflict (Robin Greenstock). Nick Peachey gave us a refreshing break from these impossible to answer questions with one of his famous history talks, this time on influential women through history.

Then to end the year we discussed some more current issues and dilemmas such as vegetarianism (Josh Moore) and feminism (Steff Boyes and Ella Job). All these talks and discussions proved fascinating and complex. Then, to add a bit of variety, we had some brilliant lectures dotted throughout by external speakers on topics ranging from the Vietnam War to the evolution of humans.

Lower School Purvis lunches proved to be equally stimulating with weekly discussions on a huge variety of topics. A particular stir was created in the Lower School Purvises when the discussion of whether Michael Craig-Martin’s Oak Tree was indeed an oak tree or actually a glass of water as it appeared to be. The moral conundrum of cannibalism, Brexit, no-platforming as well as many other issues also made an appearance over the course of the year.

Like many aspects of school life, Purvis meetings, in the way we know them, had to be temporarily put on hold when pupils had to go home. However, if there was one silver lining to this it would be that it gave the members of the society time to produce the first-ever Purvis Society Journal. The journal is over 100 pages long and contains articles by pupils from all year groups. The editing and design was done by some members of the Sixth Form, namely Macca Garlic, Henry Mould and Nick Peachey.

Although it took several hours to produce and a lot of hard work it proved to be highly successful and something the Society will definitely be hoping to do next year, under the leadership of next year’s Purvis Secretary, Jacopo Bonous.

CRANLEIGH FUTURES MRS AMANDA READER, HEAD OF CRANLEIGH FUTURES

This year we decided to put the chocolate to one side and give the Fourth Form an Eggstravaganza in the Emms Centre. Their challenge was to work together to design, produce and value an egg container that would safely land their egg from a height.

Pupils worked together in teams being creative in managing their time and a very tight budget. Points were awarded for team-working skills and financial management as well as having a fully intact egg following a drop from the Emms Centre staircase. Great fun was had by all and only a few people ended up with egg on their hands. Many congratulations to the winning team who managed to develop a product with a 51p profit.

PROFESSIONALS SUPPERS Throughout the year we hosted a couple of Professional Suppers for pupils interested in careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and the Sports Industry. We welcomed professionals from a waste-to-energy business, Engen Today, Synergy Health and SRE who pride themselves on ensuring the built environment enhances life without costing the earth. We were also given a talk about cochlear implants from an audiologist. Our very supportive professionals chatted to eager Sixth Formers and Upper Fifth Formers, sharing their own career journeys and imparting some words of wisdom. It is always so encouraging to see what can be achieved if you are determined

and passionate to succeed. Degrees in Biology and Finance can lead to so many different career journeys. Our Sports Industry Professional Supper was equally successful and informative for the Sixth Form. It is so exciting to see just where networking opportunities might lead.

GAP FAIR With an increasing number of pupils taking gap years, we felt it important to provide them with a range of opportunities to explore and advice to ensure that they travel safely. Our Gap Fair took place in February and we welcomed representations from Cranleigh China, Ski le Gap, Letz Live, and Caribbean Elective, to name but a few.

VIRTUAL UCAS DAY With COVID-19 having a huge impact on every aspect of school life, we created a virtual UCAS day for our Lower Sixth pupils in order to kick start their Future Thinking. Pupils worked in their affiliated houses, attending four sessions on: A-Z universities; How to write a Personal Statement; Degree Apprenticeships; and Speed Dating with our OCs. Practical advice from OCs is always a highlight of the UCAS day and this year was no different. Mr Nick Drake directed the pupils’ questions from the comments tabs in his best David Dimbleby manner, ensuring the smooth running of each session.

MR JAMES NAIRNE, DIRECTOR OF ART

Despite our strange ending, over the last year Cranleighans produced exciting, imaginative, skilful and thoughtful artwork. From photography, where Sophie Roome’s success in the National Portrait Gallery’s ‘Bright Young Things’ Competition was a highlight, to work in sculpture, printmaking and painting, our students excelled. Our Upper Sixth didn’t get to have the final exhibition nor the Upper Fifth GCSE pupils, but we will enjoy their work around School this coming year and hope to show their best work online.

Workshops and gallery trips for our different year groups were organised and attended. The most exciting was our Sixth Form trip to Paris in the October half term. As part of their usual curriculum visits, the Upper Fifth travelled in the autumn to Pallant House Gallery, the Cass Sculpture Foundation park in Sussex and the British Museum in January. The Upper Sixth visited the extraordinary work of fashion photographer Tim Walker at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the contemporary portraitist Elizabeth Peyton at the NPG, and Finnish artist Helene Schjerfbeck at the Royal Academy. Our Lower Sixth saw a memorable exhibition of Olafur Eliasson at Tate Modern, along with the Dora Maar retrospective. Our 60 Lower Fifth pupils also visited Tate Modern to explore the permanent collection... and then lockdown brought a term of remote learning and reflection.

Many thanks as usual to our support staff — art technician, Mr Martin Crook, and our cleaners Ms Miria Ferreira Da Silva and Mrs Marilia Nobrega — we couldn’t have done anything without them. Praise too for the art teaching staff of Mrs Lyndsey Mercer, Mr Will Kinnersly and Ms Lucy Hellberg, who bring a shared professionalism and dedication to seeing students develop high quality and personal artwork — even when doing this remotely.

DESIGN ENGINEERING MR JON TAYLOR, HEAD OF DESIGN ENGINEERING

The Design Engineering department has enjoyed another year of great success, especially on the extra-curricular front. At the start of the Michaelmas term our first ever Greenpower racing team was in action at the Dunsfold Park circuit. Whilst the team was at first taken aback by the professionalism and set-up of some of the others in the paddock, they were keen to learn and nervously waited whilst the car went through its MOT and race scrutineering. After some slight adjustments to the chain position and tension the car was ready for the first race.

The team decided that a driving combination of Lulu Bryn-Jones, Georgia Alexander and Joshua Bartels would take on the first race and we set ourselves the goal of ensuring the car finished Race 1 undamaged. Not only did the car finish but Cranleigh Racing sat in 45th position out of a field of 76 cars. Max Schutte, George Porter and Finlay Galbraith took on the driving in Race 2 and managed to finish an even more respectable 40th out of a field of 74 cars. The team had a fantastic day and managed to win the ‘Best Newcomer’ award which is a great starting point for Cranleigh Racing.

The department also hosted its first senior VEX Robotics regional competition this year with 10 teams from other schools in attendance. Both Cranleigh teams were in excellent form heading into the home regional with a trophy each already under their belts. Both teams started well and began to take control of the leaderboard after a few technical alignment issues were rectified in their initial match. At the end of qualification, team 18650C were ranked 2nd and 18650B were 4th. After both teams paired with teams from other schools they were positioned on either side of the elimination brackets meaning that a Cranleigh v Cranleigh final was on the cards for the second time this season. Both teams, alongside their alliance partners, battled their way to the knockout rounds to set up a hotly anticipated final. The lead changed hands numerous times with both teams scoring huge stacks of cubes. It all came down to the final few seconds where a key defensive move from 18650B denied 18650C the win as they looked to place their final multiplier block. 18650B were crowned champions again!

The Design Engineering department would also like to take this opportunity to thank Miss Sandy Ni’man for her contributions to Cranleigh over the past two years and we wish her all the best at her new school.

My first year in charge of the Music Department has certainly provided a few challenges! Broadly falling into two halves, it felt somewhat as though the script-writer was sacked at half time. In the autumn and winter, the Music Department produced some stunning performances, breaking down perceived barriers of genre and style and embracing a wide range of ensemble and solo performances across the 7-18 age range. Highlights included major concerts each month in the Michaelmas term, and We Will Rock You in March, alongside a host of memorable individual performances and achievements.

The spring and summer saw unprecedented challenges for those pupils who learn musical instruments, and yet it has also allowed them time and freedom to explore their creativity, and to enjoy the pleasure of singing and playing as a welcome distraction from online academic lessons and screen time. The Summer Concert we presented online had at its heart a simple message; that the joy of music-making has continued, regardless of the difficulties our pupils have faced, and that we can fully embrace modern technology to continue to produce high-quality performances.

MR JONATHON SCOTT, DIRECTOR OF DRAMA

Well what a year... the highs were stratospheric and the lows, well, let’s just say there were some challenges. We have had shows, we have had exams, and we have had shows and exams cancelled, but through all of this what has shone through palpably is the Cranleighans’ desire to participate in, and consume, high-level art and drama in all its forms; embracing all challenges thrown at them with determination, creativity, enthusiasm and an indomitable spirit. Even in the darkest days of lockdown and isolation the students were producing thoughtful and uplifting film and performance both for themselves and with a desire to challenge and support others.

I will try not to dwell too much on this idea but sometimes it does seem that life imitates art and this was embodied somewhat with the two senior school plays that were performed this year. In Michaelmas the newest member of the department, Miss Dominique Chapman, directed an outstanding production of Alan Bennett’s King Charles III, a contemporary play written in the style of a Shakespearean history that charted the forced abdication of King Charles following the death of Elizabeth II. However, what was particularly pertinent was the narrative that followed Prince Harry’s falling in love with, and subsequent decision, to withdraw from the royal family to live independently with his working-class girlfriend; the play being performed just days before the withdrawal of Harry and Meghan Markle.

The second and somewhat ill-fated offering that started rehearsal in September and was limited to one performance before all live theatre was closed down globally, was the Senior Musical We Will Rock You by Ben Elton and Queen, directed by Mrs McGhee and Mr Scott with musical direction from Mr Royall and Mr Saxel. This foot thumper of a rock musical follows the journey of two free spirits “seen as a virus” who seek to escape from a virtual world of overproduced digital pop music, consumed through computer screens controlled by the Globalsoft Corporation, to find a world where people can get together in groups to share live music, “get together to be together”.

The live shows came to an abrupt end following the breakout of COVID-19. Fortunately, we were able to perform one last triumphant and emotional show behind closed doors and with some outstanding work from Mr Butler, piece together a filmed version of the show from rehearsals and the single performance that was (ironically) shown as a live performance via computer screens to thousands of members of the Cranleigh community, bringing joy in a dark and uncertain time. Demonstrating the power of the arts to draw people together.

Before the start of remote learning, the new department was bustling with energy and creativity with GCSE C1 practical exams being performed in the Michaelmas term and A-Level C1 practical exams in the first half of both Michaelmas and Lent were completed to a remarkable standard. As well as these the house plays from South/Cubitt and the newly formed Martlet/East were performed in Michaelmas with joy and enthusiasm. Although unfortunately cancelled, preparations were also well underway for the GCSE and A-Level C2 performances that would, I am sure, have been an excellent showcase of Cranleigh talent.

EVEN IN THE DARKEST DAYS OF LOCKDOWN AND ISOLATION THE STUDENTS WERE PRODUCING HIGH-LEVEL, THOUGHTFUL AND UPLIFTING FILM AND PERFORMANCE

Even in lockdown the creativity and energy continued, with students creating short films of scenes from The Three Muskateers using teddies, toys, models and unsuspecting family members in place of what should have been the Junior Play. Students have produced short films based around the theme of mental health and the struggles of lockdown as a teenager, comedy sequences related to commedia dell arte and farce, sentimental music videos, Greek theatre montages, monologues, among many others and were even able to create full theatrical scenes with several actors joined via internet platforms. All this whilst still producing high-level academic work in the virtual classroom.

Unfortunately this year we say goodbye to Mr Hamish Ellis, our Theatre Manager, who leaves to be with his wife Mrs Emma Ellis, as she goes to take on a new role in Uppingham.

Mr Ellis has been central in helping us realise our vision over the past couple of years as we have tried to develop the department both physically and creatively and he will be sorely missed, as will Mrs Ellis who has been the organisational backbone of performance over the past several years. We wish them both the very best for the future.

We look forward to welcoming the students back on site and into the rehearsal rooms, and audiences into the auditorium. We look forward to the productions next year and the new House Film Competition, and mostly we look forward to seeing how we can challenge ourselves creatively.

MR CHARLIE BODDINGTON, ASSISTANT HEAD (CO-CURRICULAR)

The disruption and cutting short of the second half of the sporting year led to huge disappointment for many, not least for the Upper Sixth students who were robbed of what for many of them should have been some of their happiest memories at the School, playing sport together on long lazy sunny afternoons in their final term at Cranleigh.

Although they were not able to have the sporting send-off they deserved in the Summer, we should acknowledge the fine contribution they have made as a year group to Cranleigh sport and the many highlights they have achieved together during their time here.

The following pages highlight what a successful sporting year it has once again been and most importantly the sheer enjoyment and fun that the pupils have got out of it, whatever level they may have been playing at.

It would be wrong, however, not to highlight some of the outstanding achievements of the year, most notably the equestrian team winning four national team titles and two individual titles, the skiing team winning gold at Parallel Slalom and a host of other medals at the Independent Schools Ski Championship, the U16 girls’ indoor hockey team retaining their national title and the 1st XV rugby team’s unbeaten season resulting in them winning the Daily Mail Trophy.

MR BRIAN BROWNE, MASTER IN CHARGE OF FOOTBALL

This was the ‘unprecedented’ season. We had more rain in January and February than ever before and when the weather dried up for us in March, we were all impacted by the virus arrival! This resulted in the senior teams only playing a third of their planned fixture card.

Despite the interruptions, the boys revelled in every opportunity to get out on the grass and play. They trained hard and quickly rediscovered their latent footballing skills in early season. As the squads formed and players got more familiar with teammates, the teams developed and improved incredibly well over the brief season. In the house competitions Cubitt dominated both the 6-a-side tournament and also triumphed in the senior cup, edging past Loveday on goal difference. For the senior teams, results and brief reports follow: The 1st XI were developing into a very fine team in the short amount of time they had together. They were led by their indomitable Captain Mack Muir and vice-captain Luke Andrews. It took the side two games to become a cohesive unit and the coaches lamented on the unfortunate nature that this team’s season was cut so short as they were becoming a very good outfit. This was on display none more than the game against Bede’s where the Firsts continued to play as a team for the entirety of the 90 minutes and dominated the second half. The lack of goals was an area the team was working on as it had to rely too often on the brilliance of Will Wilkinson to find the back of the net. On the occasion of the Bede’s match it was Will’s 30-yard free kick into the top corner that separated the teams but the victory should have been secured with a higher goal margin. We will certainly miss the senior players of Luke Andrews, Luke Kiely, Ross Kiely, Mack Muir and Josh Pike next season but look forward to the prospect of working with the majority of the First team players for another season.

The 2nd XI experienced a mixed season, both in terms of the weather and results. At times, we played attractive football, but I feel that it took until what was our third (and eventually, final) game that we truly started to play as a team. Indeed, the defeats to Worth and Bede’s were not thoroughly deserved, with the scorelines in no way reflecting the performance. However, in the RGS game, things finally started to click, and the victory was well fought, and deserved. All the players deserve credit, including the two Upper Fifth (Bryn Spender and Santi Bridgwood) who battled for, and then nailed down, starting positions, but my particular thanks must go to the Upper Sixth, and those leaving us, whose efforts and commitment will be missed: Fin Brown, Hugo North, Charlie Phillips, Nat Rudder, Luke Specogna, Tom Evans and George Vinall.

Mr Jack Schofield-Newton The 3rd XI enjoyed a season of mixed success. However, there is a bright future ahead with the makeup of the side once again being filled with Lower Sixth formers and with the stand out performer for the season being an Upper Fifth Former in the shape of Archie Chilcott who led the strike force in the latter half of the season with intelligent runs and a keen eye for goal. After a loss in the first game to Hurtwood House, it was satisfying to end a cancellation filled season with a hard-fought 3-2 win against RGS. Special mentions also should go to Ed Brounger, Tom Hills, Archie O’Neil and Rex Wilks whose energy and commitment to

defence ensured losses were turned to draws and that the team got a win in their final match. As energetic Upper Sixth Formers they were excellent role models for younger players and finished their Cranleigh football career on distinguished notes. In the meanwhile, the younger team members and their coach look forward to next season and a less interrupted fixture schedule.

Mr Nick Drake The football season for the mighty 4th XI was short on matches, but long on goals and action! We played only the single game against one of our big local rivals, RGS, and I am delighted to report that the boys played extremely well and emerged with a thoroughly impressive 7-1 thumping of their opponents. This result was especially impressive, given that the boys must have been rusty as a result of the lack of game time. However, as soon as the referee blew his whistle, the boys showed no signs of rust as they tore into their beleaguered opponents with unrestrained enthusiasm. The first half was excellent and the second half was, if anything, even better. There were notable performances from Seni Luca-Daniels and Matthieu Reynolds, and although our keeper was something of a spectator for much of the match, he acquitted himself well when he was called into action. Overall, it was a fantastic result and a very satisfying day for the boys and their coach.

MISS SARAH GREENWOOD The trip to the Open Championship at Royal Portrush in July (2019) was a great success — a team of 14 pupils and four members of Common Room led by Mr Charlie Boddington travelled over to Ireland and witnessed one of the more raucous championships in recent years. As ever, the job they did kept the crowds in touch with what was occurring on the course, and their professionalism and attention to detail was much appreciated by the organising committee. In 2021 the School golf team will hopefully be heading to Royal St George’s to be part of one of the greatest sporting events in the world.

THEIR PROFESSIONALISM AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL WAS MUCH APPRECIATED

On the course, we had a successful and very full first half of the Michaelmas term with a match or tournament every week — Luke Davis (Upper Sixth, North) captained the team and led us to a commendable 2nd place at the West Sussex GC Invitation event and 3rd place in the Smarden Bell at Royal Ashdown Forest GC. Luke and Will Bovill picked up a prize for best net score at West Sussex. The highlight of the term was the annual match against the Old Cranleighan Golf Society — we were very well hosted at Reigate Heath GC and came away 2-1 winners. The team for the season was predominantly Lower Sixth which bodes well for 2020-21.

There were a number of junior matches/events which took place on the School course as well as a couple of girls matches against Guildford High School. All of these were well supported and we are definitely seeing the course used more than ever by serious players and improvers. A special mention goes to the grounds staff for keeping the course in such good condition — thanks from all School golfers!

BOYS HOCKEY The highlights of the season included both the U16 and U18 boys getting through to the South Finals indoors, as did the two girls’ squads, meaning all four squads reached the South Finals for only the second time in the School’s history. The U16 and U14 boys were both one game away from national finals in their Plate competitions before COVID-19 intervened. However, best of all there were some outstanding performances by all the sides across the hockey club that yielded the highest percentage of wins the boys’ have ever achieved. We had four teams with a 100% record — U15 Ds, U15 Es, U14 Ds and U14 Es — plus another three undefeated — U16 Cs, U15 Cs and U14 As — and three others with just one loss — U16 Bs, U15 Bs and U14 Cs. Given that the 1s, 2s and 16 As only had two losses each in their block fixtures and win ratios of 60% or more, it has been a very positive, albeit shortened, season.

The U18s had a setback before the season started with Captain Will Tristem having a back injury restricting him to just a couple of cameo appearances at the end of the season. He was however a fantastic role model turning up to every training session and match and was a credit to the School.

The U18s National League campaign kicked off with a rather disappointing 2-3 loss against Ipswich as part of an exciting double header against their girls and boys. It was great to have the home support for the afternoon but unfortunately we couldn’t manage a result. Whitgift were simply too strong for us in the next game and were a few up in the first quarter. After Christmas we were at Langley Park in a rather fractious match that meant we played only seven minutes of the second half with a full 11 and so were unable to get a win and had to settle for a 1-1 draw. A great first half against Reeds saw us level at one-all but they turned up the heat in the second half scoring some great goals and running out 6-2 winners. A good victory with some lovely passing moves against Kingston gave us a 3-1 win but RGS Guildford were too strong in the final game that we lost 1-4. Our division was the strongest in the country with the top three — Whitgift, RGS and Reeds — all reaching the National semi-finals but we look forward to breaking into the top three next year.

Indoors the U18s started their Heats slowly against a quick and fluent Eastbourne team and lost out by the odd goal in three in a close game. A good performance against St John’s produced a The Cranleighan 2020 | PAGE 41

HOCKEY fairly comprehensive 3-1 win and was followed by another good 2-0 win over Trinity to seal a place in the South Finals. We had an extremely tough group and performed at an excellent level throughout, losing 1-2 to a strong St Lawrence team before putting in a great show beating the talented RGS Guildford 3-0.

The final pool game was against Reeds and any of three sides could make the semis depending on the result. In a really tight game, we just lost out 1-2 once again to two well executed short corners — a valiant effort.

Squad for South finals: Luke Cahusac, Ben Fewings, Will Firth, Luca La Costa, Tom Lawes, Felix Rodriguez, Ethan Stiles, Olly Witts After losing the season opener against Eastbourne, the 2s had an excellent run of four wins beating Charterhouse, Wellington, Reeds and Hurst before a tight match against the mighty Whitgift who scored twice at the end to seal the victory... a very positive season. The 3s started with a 2-1 win over Charterhouse before losing to Reeds and Hurst in a close game.

The U16 As had three victories and two very close games against Reeds and Whitgift which they narrowly lost 1-2 and 0-2. The U16 Bs had a stellar 5-0 victory over Whitgift to go with three other wins — only Reeds got the better of them in an evenly matched game of top quality that they sneaked 1-2. The U16 Cs had just two games in this truncated season but they drew 3-3 versus Charterhouse and beat Hurst 1-0.

At the South Heats the boys started with a repeat of their good performance against Lingfield to run out 4-1 winners. A 2-1 victory that could have been more over King Edwards Southampton followed and with other results including draws, they qualified for the South Finals with a game to spare. A final 0-0 draw with Reeds saw us once again top the qualifying group.

The first match at the South Finals was against a top quality and physically imposing St Lawrence team. An excellent performance saw us go toe-to-toe with them and even have more possession. They had just one short corner which they converted whilst we had just one which their keeper saved. We continued to try to break down their impressive defence in the second half but they nicked a second just before the end to win 2-0. Another tight game followed against Trinity. They scored midway through the first half. We pressed hard but failed to score in the second half and they won 2-0. However with St Lawrence beating everyone and Borlase beating Trinity, it came down to our last game v Borlase. A two-goal winning margin would see us through to the semis. We were out of the blocks and playing fast effective hockey. A great chance went begging, we got a stroke...and missed, as well as two short corners that they saved, one brilliantly off the line with the keeper beaten. Somehow it was 0-0 at half time and we continued to press in the second half but they got a breakaway to clinch the winner and progress to the semis themselves. This was however an encouraging indoor campaign, especially considering the age of the squad.

The U15s had a wonderful season as a year group. The 15 As started with two wins over Eastbourne and Charterhouse 3-1 and 6-0 respectively before losing by the odd goal to both Wellington and Reeds. The 15 Bs won five including a very good victory over Reeds 1-0 as well as beating Eastbourne, Charterhouse, Wellington and Hurst. They only just lost to Whitgift 1-2 in a great contest as they were chasing a 100% record for the season. The U15 Cs went one better with no losses, one draw and four wins including a stunning 7-1 demolition of Whitgift. Even better than that the U15 Ds and U15 Es had 100% records. The 15 Ds scored 22 goals in just four games including a 10-0 victory over Charterhouse and a notable 2-0 win over Reeds 15 Cs. The 15 Es won both of their games including 9-0 versus Reeds.

The U16 national squad had an exciting 3-0 win away to Portsmouth Grammar in Round 1 but were then edged out 1-2

by King Edward’s Southampton. In the Plate they cruised past Charterhouse 6-0 before coming from behind to beat Kings Winchester 3-2 in a rain drenched match. Another strong performance beating KCS Wimbledon 5-2 left them just one game away from reaching the National Finals before COVID-19 halted them in their tracks. This was a good cup run in which it was very clear that so many players improved during its course.

Indoors the U16s had a Preliminary tournament to negotiate.

A comfortable 4-1 win over Charterhouse was followed by a tense 1-1 draw with Reeds. An excellent 4-1 win over a physically strong Wellington team was rounded off by an even better 3-0 against Lingfield to top the pool.

The U14 Bs clocked up three wins including 8-1 versus Wellington and 4-1 over Reeds. In the meantime the U14 Cs registered four wins including an impressive 6-1 win over Whitgift as well as 6-0 victories over both Charterhouse and Wellington, scoring 25 goals in just six games with their only loss being by the odd goal against Reeds. Like their U15 counterparts, the U14 Ds and Es had 100% records with the Ds beating Eastbourne 8-0 and the Es beating Reeds 5-1 before the season was truncated. This bodes very well for the future.

In the Nationals, the U14s failed to get past Lingfield in the Surrey round in a game they dominated but succumbed to a breakaway goal. At the Tier 2 South Heats the team got better and better throughout the tournament. An easy win over West London Free was followed by wins over Bedes and Wellington in back-to-back matches. John Hampden, Reeds and Lingfield were then beaten to win the tournament and leave them just one win away from national finals before COVID-19 stopped their charge.

The highlights of the season included the U16s retaining their Indoor National crown in another thrilling final against Repton and the U16 As and U14 As sharing the Adelaide Cup, with it all going down to the wire in the last set of matches as they both had undefeated seasons in the Saturday block fixtures. Not far behind them the 4s, U15 Cs, U14 Bs and U14 Cs all came close to undefeated seasons as well — a great performance overall.

The U16s cruised through their Indoor Heats round beating Godolphin and Latymer 3-0, Hurst 4-1 and Claire’s Court 2-1. The South finals started with an outstanding performance against the traditionally strong Sir William Borlase whom we beat 2-1 with an overtime short corner, followed by a comfortable 2-0 win over Kingston to qualify us for the semis. A great match against Marlow yielded just one goal in our favour and qualification for the Nationals. We drew in the final against St Teresa’s, only to lose on strokes.

At the Nationals a 3-2 win over Millfield was followed by a tight pool game against our big rivals Repton. They had more chances and won by two goals. Sunday saw us beat The Perse 3-1 and

Queens Chester 6-3 to set up a semi against local rivals St Teresa’s and their three England players. A different system mixing man-to man and zonal stopped them distributing from the back and we won 4-2 to set up another final against Repton. Once again a different system negated their two main threats and a top quality match couldn’t separate the two sides in a 1-1-draw. So just like the previous year it was penalty flicks: Liv almost saved the first, Mattie scored bottom right, Liv saved, Siena scored low left, they flicked wide and we were National Champions again, the first ever Cranleigh side to retain their trophy.

A REALLY PLEASING CAMPAIGN THAT INCLUDED NUMEROUS EXCELLENT PERFORMANCES

respectively, but a talented St George’s side proved too strong in the semi.

Outdoors saw the start of the Girls U18 National League. A relatively comfortable win against Ipswich (2-0) was played in front of a big home crowd as part of a double header with the boys.

Two further wins over Norwich (3-0) and St John’s (3-2 having been three up) set us up for a five o’clock away match under lights at Framlingham. A frantic first 20 minutes saw an Eliza Wheeler goal sandwiched between two of theirs. A superb second half saw a diving Tilly Gough equaliser and a penalty flick save from Tess Shahbo earn us a great draw with one of the best halves of hockey played by the school in many years. A winner takes all match versus the strong Reigate side was another fine performance and an impressive 2-1 victory with Georgie Lawes deftly lifting the ball over the advancing keeper to get the winner.

A win over Greshams qualified us for the national quarter-finals and an away trip to Millfield.

Our young side put in another top performance in a pulsating match in which Rosie Hope was simply outstanding. By full time it was 3-3, but they managed to win on penalty flicks. It was a fine campaign and with such a young squad it bodes well for the future.

the return fixture. Highlights included big wins over Epsom (5-0), Bradfield (9-2), Wellington (5-1) and St John’s (6-0).

The U16 outdoor squad for the National cup lost narrowly 3-4 against Headington who went on to progress to the national semi-finals. In the Plate competition however they recorded excellent wins over Beaconsfield (3-1) and St Edwards (3-2) before succumbing to Bedes 1-2 in a game that either side could have won. Once again some very useful lessons learnt by this squad will have helped their individual development.

The U16 Cs also started with 4-1 and 3-0 wins against Sevenoaks and Hurst in two of their first three matches but came out just on the wrong side of close games in three of their others.

The U15 As had strong victories over Reigate (4-1), Hurst (3-0) and Bradfield (4-1) before a run of four games without a goal stalled their season somewhat before beating Brighton in the last game. There was however significant improvement in numerous players’ decision-making over the season that will be of benefit going forward. The U15 Bs also started with a positive performance against Reigate recording a 3-2 victory. A run of tough games followed before they too returned to winning ways against Brighton at the end. The stars of the year group were undoubtedly the U15 Cs who scored 31 goals and only conceded 8 in winning six of their matches, drawing two against Hurst and Canford and only losing in a really tight game 1-2 versus Hurst in

The U14 As also had an undefeated season in the Saturday block fixtures with eight wins and two draws against Reigate and Wellington and scored an impressive 34 goals in the process. The wins included 5-1 victories over both Bradfield and Canford. The U14 Bs and Cs both had great seasons whilst the U14 Ds had two 4-0 wins over both Sevenoaks and Bradfield. The U14 Bs had a goal difference of 19, also scoring 34 goals and conceding 15 in winning six matches, drawing two and losing two by just the odd goal in both of them. Their wins included 7-1 versus Sevenoaks and 5-1 over Canford. The U14 Cs scored 20 goals and conceded just 6, the lowest of any side in the club. They won five, drew 2 and lost by the odd goal to Hurst — their wins included 4-0 over Sevenoaks and beating Canford 5-0.

In their national competition the U14s easily beat St Teresa’s and Tormead in the Heats. At the Surrey Finals, we played excellently against St George’s going into half-time 1-0 up and extending our lead in the second half to win 3-0 and qualify for the South Heats.

The high quality final against Reigate saw us draw 1-1. The penalty strokes went on and on before we finally lost on ‘sudden death’ on the 14th penalty stroke!

The South Heats yielded a good 2-0 win over Stowe and wins against both Roedean and Godolphin and Latymer to top the group. A quarter-final against a powerful Wellington team was another great game — a very tight encounter which they finally edged 1-0 to knock us out. A really pleasing campaign that included numerous excellent performances.

Although I’m sure this academic year will be remembered in years to come as one of pandemic and disruption, I will look back on the 2019-20 season with great fondness.

My first year at the helm of Cranleigh Netball has certainly been eventful and one to remember but my overriding feeling has to be one of pride and excitement for the future of netball here at Cranleigh.

On average every week more than 130 Cranleighans took to the netball courts both home and away and competed against other much bigger and more competitive netball schools. Although the results sometimes didn’t go our way, I know both staff and girls had real pride representing the school and overall a huge amount of fun!

Amongst the fun were some great successes; our U16 A team qualified for the County Finals, a great achievement considering competition is notoriously very tough and the qualifying rounds takes place outside of netball term. Hebe Bodmer and Amy Fotheringham (both Upper Sixth) earned themselves their full colours as Co-Captains of the first team.

Amy’s accolades don’t stop there as this season she was a member of the Surrey Storm U19 NPL (National Performance League) competing in England’s top tier of netball for her age group.

Individual performances also extend out to international representation with Sadhbh Stingemore (Lower Sixth) who was selected as part of the U19 training squad for Ireland this year continuing her journey from U17s last year.

WAS REPRESENTED AT ALL LEVELS IN THE THREE DISCIPLINES

The 2019-20 riding year was all about the NSEA National Championships at Addington in October. Cranleigh was represented by teams and individuals at all levels in the three disciplines of Show Jumping, Arena Eventing and Dressage. What we did not expect were the trophies and national titles the riders came home with after four days of hard-fought competitions which saw between 40 and 50 schools contesting most classes.

In summary, we came home with four national team titles: • Intermediate Show Jumping • Open Show Jumping • Advanced Open Show Jumping • Open Arena Eventing

Lila Millard was the Individual Advanced Open Arena Eventing Champion and Annie Vitek was the Individual Advanced Open Show Jumping Champion.

Phoebe Going rode to individual silver in the Open Arena Eventing, our Junior Arena Eventing team took silver spot and our Dressage and Intermediate Arena Eventing teams finished in the final line-up in 5th place.

The NSEA National Plate Championship in November resulted in a national title for our Dressage team as well as for Issy Hollidge in the Open Arena Eventing Championship.

In addition to these successes, Josh Moore and Darcy Zander were selected for the GB Young Riders Development Programme for Eventing, whilst Annie and Kristy Vitek were selected to represent the Czech Republic in the European Championships for Children on Horses, in addition to their success at FEI competitions in Europe over the winter, including the Paris Masters.

Before school and competition stopped at the end of March, we managed to qualify Arena Eventing and Dressage teams and individuals at regional competitions for the 2020 National Championships.

The 1st XV ended their extraordinary season finishing 1st in the prestigious Daily Mail Schools Merit Table for the first time. It’s only the fifth 100% season since rugby started at Cranleigh in 1916 (the others were 1955, 1993, 2005 and 2017).

Their success comes as a result of an unbeaten season where the team only conceded six tries all year and scored 339 points in their nine matches. During the season they beat champions trophy semi-finalists Hampton and Epsom college as well as the likes of Tonbridge, Marlborough, and finally Canford in the last game.

RUGBY We’re delighted to announce that two members of the Daily Mail Trophy winning squad have signed professional contracts with Harlequins: Oscar Beard and Will Trenholm who were 1st XV Captain and Vice-Captain respectively. Both players have represented England Schoolboys as well as represented Harlequins in their A League shield matches this season. The School saw Jago Bailey, Oscar Beard, Finley Brown, Ollie Corbett, Jake Golding, Toby Kemp, David Ofori, Sam Sommers, Joshua Tusler and Will Trenholm represent Harlequins and London Irish academies with Max Campbell-Harris and Henrique Da Silva Gabriel representing Surrey at U18 level. Henrique Da Silva Gabriel also went on to represent Portugal at U18 level.

There were a number of great performances within the junior age groups including the U14 D vs Christ Hospital match which saw the team register their first victory in a terrific 37-32 win. In addition, the U16 As performed brilliantly vs Hampton winning by nearly 50 points. The U14 A side won the trophy for the junior team of the season with a terrific season.

The sevens season was cut short but it didn’t stop the U18 side reaching two finals of the two tournaments they played in (Hampton and Surrey Sevens).

COMBINED CADET FORCE MR DAN REED, CONTINGENT COMMANDER

Another strong year and growth for the CCF with a contingent size of just over 100 cadets. The training for the Lower Fifth new recruits began well in September, Exercise TIGER CUB was well attended and for the first time we could split the training so all of the cadets had their own training plan. The highlight of the exercise was the night navigation exercise with a hunter force of senior cadets laying ambushes to surprise the new recruits; none of the new recruits’ patrols managed to escape.

Remembrance parade in Cranleigh village is growing in popularity with more cadets volunteering to march through the village centre and lay a wreath at the cenotaph. Drill has never been a strength in the contingent but under the instruction of ex-Guardsman, Lt Nick Walker we have made huge improvements over the past three years.

Collective training was obviously cut short after Christmas and we could not complete any of the activities; the military skills competition, Easter Camp, Summer Camp and numerous events were all cancelled due to the outbreak of COVID-19. We did however have a cadet on the Senior Cadet Instruction Cadre (SCIC); Sgt Will Marshall attended the course over half term and performed incredibly well obtaining a distinction.

Only a few days before the lockdown we managed to parade for our biennial inspection. This is a ceremonial inspection to ensure the contingent is performing well. We welcomed a team of inspecting officers from Brigade HQ and all went very well. The inspecting Colonel’s last remark was, “This is one of the best contingents I’ve inspected.” A huge well done to all of the cadets and officers who helped make the day such a success.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION DR SIMON YOUNG, HEAD OF OUTDOOR EDUCATION

The year started normally in a state of ignorant bliss, with a great turnout of folk wishing to join in Outdoor Education and wanting to get involved in what we have to offer.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award remains as popular as ever and had a really positive beginning with a cluster of recently departed Cranleighans receiving their Gold Awards at the Palace back in November 2019. Inevitably this year’s expeditions have had to be postponed but fingers are crossed for what looks like a very busy upcoming expedition year, allowing us to make up the deficit and give everyone a memorable experience. On the plus-side lockdown has opened up plenty of unusual opportunities to our participants and it has been great fun to see the creative ways in which Cranleighans have managed to carry on with their activities whilst in isolation. Particular thanks go to Ms Gibson and Mr Pigeon for their management of the Bronze and Silver groups.

Climbing continues to flourish with groups signing up for the beginners’ courses, the Competence Test at Craggy Island in Guildford and the Southern School Climbing Championship seeing us take medals (led by the stalwart Mr Money). At School, the house bouldering competitions were a great success, attracting their usual crowd of enthusiastic, if puzzled supporters; Loveday and Rhodes won the overall combined competition.

The Tom Avery Lectures gave an opportunity for the stay-athome adventurers to see what life was like out in the big wide world with highly contrasting talks on mineral exploration in the African bush and a record-breaking row across the Indian Ocean. We were able to get through some of the Fourth Form Outdoor Ed Programme — hopefully enough to give folk a fun taste of activities available and were similarly able to offer a little archery and kayaking. As restrictions begin to ease I hope everyone is able to get out and about and enjoy the outdoors a bit more. Here’s hoping for a safe, but more venturesome, 2020-21.

I think I speak for everyone when I say this year in Cubitt has been filled with thrills and memories that will last a lifetime. Cubitt has always been a fun place to be a part of, whether that be in the moab during break time, or kicking a ball on the Cubitt green.

In many ways Cubitt is a brotherhood and has been an absolute pleasure to be a part of, especially in my final year of being a Cranleighan. Cubitt would be nothing without Mr Cooke, Mr Rossiter, our Matrons Mrs Goldsmith, Mrs Green, Mrs Young and all of the tutoring staff; although they may occasionally get on our case for being typically boyish, they are usually fun and easy going.

With special mention to Mr Bradley tolerating my bellowing “Haloooooo!” whenever and wherever I see him around the house and Mr Neill for tolerating general “buffoonery” as he would so eloquently put it. It has been such a great place to be and I will miss it hugely. It has taught us all so much and I would urge fellow Cranleighans not to take it for granted.

EAST HOUSE East is East, isn’t it? Loud, boisterous and devoted to the cause. Well, not so this year where we experienced the unprecedented and sad business of closing the house for a virus. However, when we were here we worked on ourselves and our special character. The new motto springing up on the walls around the Fourth Form dorms, ‘Respect in word and deed’, added a statement of intent to help define us in more nuanced terms. The house, ever gracious in both victory and defeat (though sadly more practised at the latter this year — apart from Junior House Maths of course!) welcomed a fantastic Fourth Form who straight away threw themselves into the swing of things, often literally by using Big Dorm as a jungle gym par excellence.

The Lower Fifth looked on with a knowing smile, while the Upper Fifth were too busy worrying about their first big public exams, before that rug was pulled from under their feet in cruel fashion.

At the other end of the house we said farewell to a tight-knit group of fantastic young men in the Upper Sixth who were sadly unable to prove their academic merit in the traditional way by working up a head of steam for final exams. I am confident that in the buyer’s market this year they will all have decent options ahead of them and we wish them the very best as they embark on their bright futures. I look forward to seeing the boys out on East lawn for a face-to-face valedictory one day. It would be invidious to single any individual from the collective out for special praise but a big thank you goes to House Captain Hugo North for his leadership through the year; he has left a decent legacy and one I’m sure Josh Tusler will make his own as he takes the reins this academic year.

East also experienced a couple of important changes for Michaelmas, where Mr Royall took over as resident Deputy Housemaster, and in the Matrons’ team we welcomed Mrs Beth Hathaway. It is obviously a homecoming for GCR who after four years in a maroon, barbarous wilderness has returned to the erudite, couth blue fold. It is impossible to overstate his importance this year to the successful running of the house and the tireless commitment he has brought to the role; as a Fourth Form Tutor he has set the tone for the new intake in the very best way in leading by example, setting the bar high and using plenty of positive encouragement to get everyone involved. Mrs Hathaway too has been an instant hit, generous with her time and naturally caring. With three sons of her own, she is completely at home walking either the labyrinthine corridors of a teenager’s psyche or the equally dingy East wing on laundry day. With Mrs Hathaway, Mrs Helen Reed and Mrs Jenny Reilly (who has just finished her 17th year), the boys know they are in excellent hands.

I’ve already referred to the management of Big Dorm, a Sisyphean task in its own right, and this task falls largely to the Tutors who have as ever offered a huge amount and I would like to publicly thank them. The way in which they kept the pastoral care and 1:1s going through lockdown was typically impressive and a hallmark of their professionalism and care for the boys in the house. East is extremely fortunate to have their services, although it is sad to say farewell to Mrs Gray and Miss Ni’Man who have been superb Tutors and advocates for their charges throughout their time in East.

East may be a house of 105 pupils in September which is a robust, healthy number for these uncertain times, and I have every confidence that it will be a fantastic home for a new generation of Cranleighans. That old chestnut, fugit inreparabile tempus (“it escapes, irretrievable time”) will be our collective catchphrase this year, and what could be more heartening and exciting after such a protracted break than to get back into the normal business of being one big family in East, living life to its fullest, giving our best and recognising how precious these amazing days are?

Although we have had a rather tough final two terms for reasons beyond our control, once again Loveday has shown why we really are the best house in the School. The Fourth Form who joined us this year quickly immersed themselves in all aspects of the house demonstrated by their brilliant contribution to complete our hattrick of house performance wins. We had a very successful Michaelmas term bringing home both the debating and house challenges, the senior Fives and the House Touch competition.

We also enjoyed two fantastic theatre works, with starring roles for Luke Andrews in Charles and Freddie Moore in We Will Rock You. Recent events have made life tough for everyone, but the continued work ethic and positivity shown by Tutors and pupils alike shows how the house life and spirit will soon be back to its best.

As an Upper Sixth Former, this time of uncertainty has been really difficult. Although futures for some of us are uncertain, I think I can speak for most of us when I say that the hardest part has been leaving Cranleigh without the normal farewells. Over the last five years we have formed some unbreakable friendships and an unrivalled love for this house and its people. It will be difficult when the time comes (in the hopefully near future) to come back and say goodbye, but we know that we leave the house in safe hands. The current Lower Sixth Form have really stepped up and we wish them all the best in what we hope will be a slightly less disrupted year ahead.

MARTLET HOUSE

LUCY SOUTHWOOD, HOUSE CAPTAIN AND MISS CLAIRE HALL, DEPUTY HOUSEMISTRESS

The very first cohort of Martlet girls entered the house for the first time in September and we felt instantly at home. It was exciting to see our new dorms, kitchens and the common room and, of course, to meet baby Dylan who was less than a month old.

By the time the house was officially opened in November 2019 by RAF Typhoon pilot and OC Tori Turner, we had already bonded so much as a house it was as if we had always been in Martlet.

It has been a privilege to be the first House Captain and I have loved every moment of it. However, two events particularly stood out: our charity Sleep Out in aid of Centrepoint UK and the House Dance. Both of the events were so much fun and an opportunity to earn and wear our house t-shirts with pride whilst supporting the Fourth Form. We won the House Dance and came second overall in the House Performance Evening which was amazing.

I have loved so many things about Marlet. The warm and homely feel is of course due to the wonderful Housemistress Mrs Scott — thank you for everything you have done to help and support us through the year! We will miss you, Mr Scott, Molly and Dylan very much. Thanks also to our fantastic Matrons Sue and Tam, Deputy Housemistress Miss Hall, Assistant Housemaster Mr Hardy and the lovely Tutor team.

Lucy Southwood With the opening of Cranleigh’s fourth girls’ boarding house, the Michaelmas term was a season of firsts for Martlet: the first outing of purple polo shirts, the first purple stripy socks and the first use of the term “Smarties” with no relation to chocolate.

With Mrs Scott at the helm, the girls enjoyed a fun and action-packed year with plenty of competitions, events and socials.

The first inter-house competition was the Fourth Form cross country in September in typically muddy conditions. The new recruits were quick to get into the spirit of things and set off from South Lawn wearing plenty of purple face paint. Also in September, we cheered on Bella F and Boau-Lilly S who had their fingers on the bell for House Challenge. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it through to the final losing out to North-West. Next was the House Performance Evening. The Fourth Form girls worked extremely hard for the dance with the boys from East. Featuring multi-coloured umbrellas and some impressive gymnastics to It’s Raining Men and Wannabe, the dance was a great way for the new Fourth Form to bond as a year group, and for the new affiliation of East-Martlet to strengthen.

The final week before Long Leave was also a busy one with the Martlet House Play.

Sparkleshark by Philip Ridley was an excellent choice by directors, Cici C, Lotty C and Amelie L-P. A moving play about the power of imagination, fantasy and the bonds of friendship, the characters came alive in the Vivian Cox Theatre with Bella B, Melissa B and Anie R taking on the lead roles with Connie L, Anna P, Liv R and Hallé W the supporting players.

Returning from Long Leave, it was great to see Millie J, Holly S and Meg T representing Martlet at House Bouldering, finishing third overall. For Meg and Millie, it was the first time they had tried bouldering and it was fabulous to see stalwart Holly supporting and giving them some great advice. Great advice was also on hand from experienced Sixth Form wordsmiths ahead of House Debating the following week.

Bella B represented Martlet and made some convincing arguments to win our semifinal against North-West. In the final Bella once again spoke exceptionally well in a close-fought debate with Loveday-Rhodes. Moving into November, we put up a good fight in Indoor Hockey with some excellent play by Georgia A and Tessa S and were also very proud to make the final of Monday Night Football. Having defeated both West and Rhodes, we competed in the final against very local rivals South. The match was a draw and, by sharing the title, “MNF” proved to be our most successful event of the Michaelmas term!

On a slightly less successful, but equally fun note, House Hockey and the Stonesett trophy took place in the final week of term with nearly all the girls in the house competing in one of the two events. Despite some heroic runs, dives and shots at goal, Martlet finished fourth in both events but we certainly enjoyed another opportunity to adorn ourselves with that purple face paint.

The Lent term got underway with another couple of second places in both Junior and Senior House Badminton for the East-Martlet teams. Chess and House Fives also came and went, although spirits and enthusiasm were high for Lauren B and Emily H who competed in the former, and for Ruby H and Effie S who flexed their muscles in the latter. We were thus left waiting for our first victory and, after failing to make the Senior House Maths final despite some speedy calculations from Melissa B, Bella F and Holly S, expectations fell on the junior team. Lauren B, Joyce F and Phoebe F were the ones to make a little piece of Martlet history when they lifted the trophy to victory after a nail-biting final against Cubitt-South!

The final inter-house event took place at the end of March, lead by our very own Surrey Storm superstar Amy F. Unfortunately, it was another fourth place but a lovely end to the term, a refreshing break from everything else that was going on.

We have been lucky to enjoy a wide range of socials from trips to Wagamama in Guildford, pottery painting with North, a festive silent disco with South and ice skating with East. Girls have enjoyed socials both within their year groups and within their house families which are led by the Sixth Form. Even when School closed, the socials transitioned into the virtual world and it has been wonderful to see the girls getting involved with face painting, TikTok challenges, baking competitions and even persuading families to take part in a house Dancing Queen video!

Of course we are sadly saying goodbye to our Upper Sixth Form who did an excellent job of establishing our Martlet house spirit and leading by example as prefects. Upon the recommendation of one of our incoming house prefects, the illogically numbered dorms have now been renamed with the surnames of these Martlet pioneers so these girls will be remembered in the future for the roles they played in making the house such a positive and friendly place to be.

The North leavers of 2020 will always have a special place in my heart. We started this journey together. They were my first set of parents and boys that I met in June 2015 when I took on the role of North Housemaster. They were the first group to go through the worst event of the year for me – the introduction handshake and announcement of names on stage in Speech Hall! We have been present together and gone through all the highs and lows of the past five years together. Yet they have not had the ending that they deserved. This year group is such a talented bunch and impressive North-men.

The group include an international sportsman, national champions, actors, musicians, debaters, chess players, political activists to name just a few. More importantly, they are a caring and thoughtful lot. I think it is only right that on these pages we get to say goodbye and good luck to them all, and to thank them for everything they have done in North and Cranleigh. So, thank you Jago, Oscar, Pierre, Luke, Charles, Toby, Teddie, Luke, Seni, Jack, Tom, Mack, Archie, Matthieu, Will, Misha, Will, Will and George.

Let’s not forget about some of the house achievements ‘pre Covid’. We were victorious in Junior Fives, House Chess, indoor hockey to name but a few, but it was the continuous involvement of all members of the house in every aspect of school life of which I am most proud. A big well done most also go to those that performed on stage be it in musical ensembles or drama and in particular to those in Charles III and We Will Rock You. During the past term, I have been blown away by how North has come together. We have asked many things of the boys, and they have stood up and been counted. It has been a challenging time for us all and I commend them for adapting to an experience that we never knew would be part of their Cranleigh journey. Furthermore, their families have got involved too! We set running, cycling, rowing, walking, baking, hockey, and football challenges and so many have taken part. We had an at-home charity event, raising funds for Bowel Cancer UK and also for Disability Challengers (a charity extremely important to Mr Leeke and his family). We have had boys taking part in house podcasts, learning new musical instruments and trying things out for the first time. And, probably most importantly, they have all engaged with the distance learning programme. We have all been so impressed and proud of the North community. The spirit of North and what the house stands for has shone through and it is clear that it is a special house. Thank you to the boys and the parents for making it so and thank you for the brilliant staff for all they have done over the past year. We can’t wait to have the house full and buzzing again for the 2020-21 year ahead.

This year, Rhodes girls have continued to excel in all parts of School life, both within and outside of the house, steadily becoming real competitors in School events. Starting the year off strongly, Loveday/Rhodes dominated the Michaelmas term with another house performance win, securing an outstanding hat-trick winning all three years we have been competing. Through widespread participation, in true Rhodes fashion, the Fourth Form triumphed in the house cross country, demonstrating outstanding grit and determination.

As another term began, the girls continued to attain notable personal achievements across the board, from drama to skiing. The Lower Sixth performed a magnificent house chapel (including an unforgettable appearance from the Headmaster), encouraging us to seize every opportunity and live every day as fully as we can. Presented by the acclaimed Ella Job, this year’s Dangerous Minds saw noteworthy contributions from Rhodes, with our very own Sukai Secka performing a revealing and thought-provoking speech. Participating in an array of events, from bouldering, Fives, badminton, chess, netball, and so many more, the girls showed a constant willingness to get involved and represent their house, each time making us proud without fail. As the term was unexpectedly cut short, the Rhodes girls showed an ineffable resilience. We cannot forget to mention the faultless spirit and support the girls showed each other following months of hard work and rehearsals for the musical, which saw many Rhodes girls taking part,and with Frankie D’Agata as the lead. Those lucky enough to watch it can attest to the brilliance and talent of all those involved.

The Rhodes girls quickly adapted to virtual learning; we are so proud of how proactive they have been in these difficult and uncertain times. As always, the house staff have shown amazing consideration towards the entire house, checking up on us all and readily hosting online socials to keep us busy. Despite our GloWalk charity day being cancelled, the girls continued to raise money for so many amazing causes including our chosen house charities — Crohn’s and Colitis, and Mind UK. Not letting lockdown stop them, many of the girls took part in the 2.6 Challenge, completing a marathon in support of multiple amazing causes.

We know that the entire house is so grateful for the continuous support and care from Mrs Carson, Mrs Ellis, Mrs Lewis and our Rhodes Tutors and Matrons. The house will never be the same without our beloved Mrs Higgins and Mrs Clark but we wish them and their families all the best. We will certainly all miss Mrs Ellis and Miss Shairp as they leave Cranleigh and thank them for everything they have done. Their organisation to make our lives so much easier. A final mention goes to all the amazing girls in Rhodes for their enthusiasm throughout the year and never-ending commitment to the house. This year marked the first year of ‘new South’ as the house was split with Marlet, reducing our 116 girls to only 62, and it is safe to say that a smaller house has led to a wonderful new dynamic and closeness between all the year groups. Not only did our numbers change, but there was also a restructuring of our house layout, with an entirely new common room, Matron’s room and dorms. Despite these changes, the true South spirit has been stronger than ever, with the girls all throwing themselves into every aspect of School life, from sporting competitions and plays to Fourth Form dance and part song (we were robbed).

The Michaelmas term was as busy as ever, with South competing in (and unfortunately losing), House Challenge, House Performance, House Debating and House Hockey, both indoor and outdoor. However, we did manage to secure a victory in House Bouldering thanks to our stellar team of Matilda C, Anna H, Grace H and Amy Q. In addition to this, Charlotte B and Eva M shone in the notorious Fourth Form cross country by winning first and second place, leading to South placing second overall (we were robbed ... again). This term also saw the fabulous house play That’s Not How I Remember It, in which pupils from all year groups joined with the Cubitt boys to perform in an entirely student-led comedy which highlighted exactly what a house play should be. We also held our annual South Charity Evening, which was filled with quizzes, games and some incredible entertainment from Lulu B-J, Lily H, Tash K, Lina M, Maisie R and Scarlett S that really displayed the vast array of talent that South has to offer.

The Lent term saw South sail to victory in Senior House Maths thanks to Jess C, Daisy F and Izzy P, who truly amazed us with their maths skills alongside their Cubitt teammates. Some flawless badminton skills were also demonstrated in both Senior and Junior House Badminton (despite losses in almost every match) which we unfortunately did not win, but in true South fashion everyone gave it their all, even those of us who had probably never held a badminton racquet before. A more noteworthy sporting highlight was completed by Milly C and Eliza W, who helped the U16 indoor hockey team to be crowned National Champions, a truly impressive achievement. Senior House Netball was entertaining to say the least, with only 13 girls available to play making it difficult to form two teams of seven, but nonetheless the girls all played with great enthusiasm and determination.

The term ended in a way that none of us could have predicted, and although the last few months have been challenging and unexpected, we have all been immensely proud of the way that the Southies have handled everything, including adapting to learning from home. I know that myself and the rest of the Upper Sixth are devastated to have not been able to complete our final term at Cranleigh, but a huge thank you must go to Mr Drake, Mrs Lock and Miss Simmons along with all the other Tutors who have done everything they can to make our last weeks of school as enjoyable and as inclusive as possible. It’s the small aspects of house life that we have found ourselves missing during this time, such as chips and dips with Matron on a Monday night, or making tea in the moab whilst watching the Fourth Form fight for the toaster and eat mountains of toast every day, and I really hope that all these things can continue to happen by the beginning of next term.

MRS LOCK HAS MANAGED TO MAKE SOUTH A SIMPLY JOYOUS PLACE TO BE THIS YEAR

As always, Mrs Lock has managed to make South a simply joyous place to be this year.

As a Housemistress, it is hard to find the perfect balance between being serious and having fun, but this is something that Mrs Lock has done perfectly in her four years in South, and Maddy and I are so grateful to have been able to work with her as her last House Captains. She never fails to make us laugh with her amusing stories or comfort us when we’re feeling down, and I feel very fortunate to have been in South throughout her whole time here. I know that the news of her leaving came as a shock to everyone, and to say that she will be missed is an understatement; however, I know that Mrs Barker will be a great replacement and, with the help of new House Captain Libby H and deputy Millie W, will no doubt continue to lead South onto great things.

Be kind. Be kind. Be kind. A motto the house staff instil into every West girl. This was something that was crucial in such a tough period of lockdown, and at our lowest points this constantly reminded everyone to lift the spirits of others. Mrs Bukowska, Miss Frude and Mrs Worsley and the tutors led by example, starting each day with a song and a daily quiz, which always managed to get us out of our morning moods.

None of us thought we would be in this position, starting the year six months before with all guns blazing. We managed to win four out of the four House Hockey competitions, along with House Chess, House Fives and House Badminton. These house competitions are always a highlight of the year, with all the girls having a laugh together whilst also an edge of competitiveness. This was always topped off by the biscuits and hot chocolate that Matrons SJ, Carol and Jay brought down, along with their bubbly spirits.

The West girls also threw themselves into charity work, with Katie, Maya and Sophie from Upper Sixth running the Eco Clothes Charity sale. This definitely gave the girls a lot to think about around the effects of fast fashion, whilst kitting us all out with new wardrobes. Mrs Worsley constantly encourages us to think about issues affecting our generation, with ‘movies that make you think’ after prep; tackling issues such as racism and abortion. Another thought-provoking topic that we are encouraged to tackle is mental health, which has been helped hugely by the charity ‘Recognised’ who have attended dinners and social nights to get us all talking about our own mental health. This has definitely become especially important during these strange times, as we have felt more comfortable reaching out to others about difficulties we face, after these talks.

An extremely upsetting factor of the School closure was the cancellation of the School musical, ‘We Will Rock You’. Annie, Issy, Libby and Poppy all put their hearts and souls into this over the year, so it was heart-breaking they couldn’t perform it for us as everyone had got their tickets months in advance. However, it was a major lift of our spirits in lockdown to watch them all performing so brilliantly in the filmed dress rehearsal. It definitely didn’t feel right not giving the Upper Sixth the send-off they deserved, as the whole house appreciated what a special year group they were. The rendition of ‘One Day More’ by the house staff, which brought many of us to tears (of laughter!) did slightly make up for this. We wish all the Upper Sixth the best of luck in their futures, but hopefully we will be able to see them all soon! Finally, we would like to say a huge thank you to all the house staff, tutors and matrons for helping us get through lockdown and are always there to have a chat with whenever we need. West is such a special place, but this is all because of the people in this house. We hope this gives you an insight into the fun-filled, crazy family of West!

In the middle of the Bible is the most profound song book ever written. A collection of 150 songs, poems, and prayers, thousands of years old yet right up to date in the experiences they portray. There is a Psalm for every emotion. This year has presented to us more time and more reason to feel all sorts of things. Perhaps one of the most uncomfortable has been the feeling of dislocation — the virtual existence we have become accustomed to has reminded us that we are physical beings who need real life contact, not just screens. Being dislocated from one another has been particularly painful in all sorts of ways. Whilst technology has helped those of us with easy access to it, it has also highlighted the growing gap between the wealthiest and poorest of society. These discomforts should affect us. They remind us that other people matter. They remind us that to live solely for ourselves is counter-productive at best. They remind us that Jesus knew what he was talking about when he summed up ‘the good life’ as loving God and loving your neighbour.

PSALM 137 (AND A HALF) By the empty chapel pews we sat down and wept When we remembered Cranleighans.

There on the table we propped up our iPads, For there our prime minister asked us to stay; The pandemic demanded no songs of joy, No singing, no bangers, no Congo.

As we reflect on the ‘corona-coaster’ lessons from enforced dislocation, it is encouraging to know that there is even a Psalm expressing something of our separation.

The Israelite people of God had been taken into captivity, exiled from their homes, dislocated in Babylon. Psalm 137, which we sing in The chorus of the Hebrew slaves (No. 201, beloved of many a Cranleighan), wrestles with the pain of this enforced and strange new existence. Unable to gather together for prayer and worship, they cannot bring themselves to sing. For us, our exile is nearly over, but singing together may have to wait a little longer.

The rest of the year in chapel seems a dim and distant past. Cramming in for Remembrance in November, standing room only at the beautiful carol services, a new face waving in the aisle, as Dr Thomas took over the baton from Mr Pashley. The weekly pattern of Chapel, Congo, and Evensong reminding us of the great truths of the Christian faith: there is a God who makes sense of this universe, He loves the least of us and the lost, He offers a life of radical adventure in the here, the now and the ever after. It is these truths which have underpinned the wonderful contribution of Mr Owen Chisholm over the last three years. Joining us as a Graduate Assistant, he was appointed two years ago as Assistant Chaplain, across Cranleigh and Cranleigh Prep. His youthful appearance belies a wealth of wisdom and depth of faith which he has shared faithfully and engagingly in chapel. We wish him well as he moves on to teach at Charterhouse.

MRS BETH LEWIS, HOUSEMISTRESS RHODES

The year’s fundraising had an epic start with the inaugural charity event for the newly opened Martlet house. On Saturday 14th September 2019 the Martlet girls gave up their beds, home comforts and technology, for a night on sleeping bags, cardboard boxes and blankets in the School Quad. They raised £1897 for Centrepoint; a charity which supports homeless 16-25 year olds. They also raised money later in the year for Cranleigh Riding for the Disabled Association, a local branch of a national cause, which Cranleighans support regularly.

generously gave of his time to encourage the committee with how they can best support the charity but also gave advice for getting involved in taking action for causes they are passionate about.

East house was proud to support the Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Service (TYAC) at the Royal Surrey who supported a pupil and his family throughout his cancer treatment. Back in February, along with House Captain and Deputy Hugo North and David Ofori, Fergus gave a moving welcome and introduction to their curry and quiz evening and why the fundraising is so important to the house.

Throughout the evening, bids were placed on a fantastic range of silent auction items donated by families and staff members. All profits from this auction, tickets, bar, the 2020 charity t-shirt and additional donations have totalled a fantastic £6,120.

The Cranleigh spirit has been thoroughly evident and at work during lockdown. Many Cranleighans have taken the opportunity to raise money for charities who are struggling at the moment due to increased pressure and reduced income. Tallulah Partridge raised £410 for Justice and Care by doing a 25km walk during lockdown, and North house raised about £1200 for Disability Challengers and Bowel Cancer UK. Rhodes families raised £1364 for Refuge, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Beyond Ourselves. South families also undertook the 2.6 Challenge in May; a special mention must go to the Kamm family who ran the equivalent of a marathon, as a family relay. Their target was to run this in under four hours — they finished in three hours 45 mins and ran a few personal bests. They raised about £400 for GOSH. Finally a huge well done to Bryn Spender who ran 10k every day for nine days over half term, raising £1105 for Beyond Ourselves, an amazing achievement.

West and North had a movie night which raised £1060 for Justice and Care and £2551 for Bowel Cancer UK, and South have been fundraising for the charities Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH), Challengers Guildford and Teenage Cancer Trust and raised £1093 from a curry and quiz night back in October. Other house’s planned events were sadly curtailed. Within lockdown, Cubitt managed to raise £1000 for the charities they regularly support: Beyond Ourselves and The Sockstar Project.

The latter was set up by OC Lewis Bedford who visited the charities committee in January. Lewis

Just days before the Rhodes charity evening, Cranleigh went into lockdown. Team Carson and Team Lewis separately completed the Glo Walk (9.5km) which the girls had been planning to complete, and a total of £2,125 was raised for Crohn’s and Colitis UK, and Mind.

With a grand total from all pupil fundraising of over £20,000, even during a pandemic, Cranleighans have shown themselves to be outward looking and self-sacrificial. Well done for all your efforts in 2019-2020!

CRANLEIGH PREPARATORY SCHOOL MR NEIL BROOKS, HEADMASTER

What a year! It is difficult not to let events of the Summer term dominate any reflection on the period. However, the seven months of ‘normal’ schooling enjoyed before lockdown saw the Prep School undertake its usual vibrant and varied array of activities. Children grew and progressed, guided by an able and committed team of staff, in a plethora of ways. Academics, drama, sport, art, music, creative pursuits and social activities all played their part in enriching the community.

Of course, it is the Summer term which will prevail in our memories.

Although it is sad that those who left us, both pupils and staff, were forced to do so in a way which was not as intimate and personal as we would have liked, what they achieved over the threemonth period was genuinely astounding. In many ways it was Cranleigh Prep at its best, with the staff pulling together to get a first-class online service for the children, and the pupils showing great drive, determination and resilience in circumstances which were previously unimaginable. The rate at which all parties adapted and modified was testament to their character.

We are now looking forward to less frenetic times when we all see each other in 3-D rather than on a screen. A time when all our plans can start to build a head of steam again. The shape of the day and timetable changed in September 2020 to give the children a calmer and more ordered day; Spanish came into the curriculum; the new classroom in the Wheeler Building opened; the Learning Support Department should eventually move, allowing the boarding revisions to be made. And as for the stay in execution the roof of the Wyatt Hall has been given for the umpteenth time...

Here’s hoping we can start to put at least some of the plans in motion over the coming 12 months but as we have all learned, life can sometimes throw us a curve ball!

CRANLEIGH ABU DHABI MR MICHAEL WILSON, PRINCIPAL

The academic year began with news of record GCSE results, which ended up being the best in Abu Dhabi. Our first cohort of A Level students also got into their universities of choice and did themselves proud. The 2019-20 cohort has just gained 70% A*/ A in the EPQ results.

The School received kitemark awards for both Pastoral Care and Wellbeing from the National Children’s Bureau, UK and became the first school in the UAE with the National Online Safety Certification.

We entered four teams in each age group in the ADISSA leagues, put on Junior and Senior School plays, as well as our first Arabic play involving both native and non-native speakers. Students from the School were involved in both the MUN and IRENA Conferences, where one of our Sixth Formers represented the Youth of Abu Dhabi in presenting a key note speech to the Secretary General of the United Nations.

This year saw the inception of the Head, Heart and Hands initiative that combines our Wellbeing, Environmental and Charity initiatives. Esha Saigal, our Head Girl, was awarded the prestigious Ed Goodwin BSME Award for her Charity work.

Internationally renowned primatologist Dame Jane Goodall DBE gave us an inspiring lecture when she formally opened the Legacy Garden designed by another Sixth Former, Rachel Tracy, as part of her EPQ. The 8th March 2020 saw us locked down and remote learning for 17 weeks. Ironically, in many ways this brought forth some of the best features of our Cranleigh Community, with the parents, pupils and staff working together and supporting each other brilliantly. We managed to launch the International Book Awards (our version of the Awesome Book Awards) and were awarded the top rating in our Distant Learning Inspection by ADEK, the local Education Authority.

BEYOND CRANLEIGH MRS AMANDA READER, HEAD OF CRANLEIGH FUTURES

On a very wet Sunday in October 2019, 10 Cranleigh school staff from nearly every department in the School took on the challenge of the Royal Parks half marathon. For our CCF team, the 13 miles was not enough of a challenge and they pushed themselves to extremes, running the race in full CCF kit. We were wet and muddy at the starting line but our spirits couldn’t be dampened. Mr Andrew Thomas flew to the finish line with the rest of us watching him disappear into the distance. Together we raised £2250. Throughout the year we have also held bake sales and mufti days to support Beyond Cranleigh.

All schools in Zambia closed at the end of March owing to COVID-19. Kawama Community School took this time to do some much-needed building works of repairing floors and fixing borehole issues. Dan and Sheba from Beyond Ourselves have continued to do some teacher mentoring and there is now a lively WhatsApp group where videos of sample lessons are shared. Many of the teachers have benefitted from this and have been inspired to improve their skills during this time.

Life in Zambia is resuming a sense of the ‘old normal’ again. Fewer restrictions are in place and fewer precautions are being taken by the general public. As a result, some students are returning to school. As it is an examination grade, the Grade 7 classes at Kawama Community School have resumed and that seems to be going well. The feeding programme, which had to be closed down, has also been able to reopen. This is great news as we know some families are really struggling during this time. Some of the big mines in the area have shut, leaving many people without jobs. This has impacted Kawama in particular, as many of the families at the school are supported by work at the mines. We are continually monitoring the situation and how best we can respond. We have a small fund available and ready to utilise if emergency needs arise for the families we know.

We do hope to return to Zambia in 2021 when it is safe and practical to travel.

ZAMBIA 2019 Reverend Tim Lewis, Chaplain

This is a school trip like no other. Our values of Service, Relationship, Excellence, and Leadership were evident in abundance. I can think of no other school venture which enables students to experience and grow in each of these core values in such profound ways. The group of Lower Sixth Formers (with honourable mention to Will Wilkinson who missed out due to injury) were unbelievable ambassadors for the School every minute of the 10 days away.

From disparate social groups, the 18 students bonded without normal access to their phones and social media.

Games, conversation and joyful sing-a-longs were the order of the day when not working. The inclusive and servant-hearted group lifted each other when it was hard and laughed with each other often.

Meeting the staff at Kawama School (in Kitwe, Zambia), began several days of learning and observation: understanding the challenges of education in a community seeking to raise itself out of systemic poverty. Reflecting each evening with the leaders of Beyond Ourselves Zambia (our partner charity) on the nature of foreign aid, the power of education, cultural difference, the ‘fluke’ of being born in a wealthy and stable country, the irresistible hope and joy shared in the midst of daily suffering — the evenings provided opportunity for profound growth. The Beyond Ourselves team had put together a wonderfully varied programme exposing our students to all sorts of aspects and models of development, meeting some wonderful people along the way. A charismatic Canadian showed us some micro-businesses financing education projects amongst orphans; we visited non-government funded community schools which operated out of a small church building with no facilities and two teachers for all year groups — a snapshot of Kawama School 10 years ago.

OUR VALUES OF SERVICE, RELATIONSHIP, EXCELLENCE, AND LEADERSHIP WERE EVIDENT IN ABUNDANCE

We drove into the bush to visit a rural community seeking to support their school through a bakery (Cranleigh raised money for the ovens five years ago). There was so much to take in and so much to see. At times the differences felt overwhelming. Our students spent two days interviewing pupils from two Beyond Ourselves schools, collecting data about their family circumstances, physical wellbeing, and education in order to support their ongoing development. Some of the stories heard were arresting and unforgettable. The data from these hundreds of interviews then needed to be added, question by question, into the database. The team rose to the challenge, despite long power cuts preventing any assistance with the sapping heat.

Myself and Mrs Hannah Shairp were delighted to have Cranleigh Prep School Headmaster Mr Neil Brooks and his wife Mrs Tracy Brooks join us in leading the trip. We were all in agreement that we had spent a potentially lifechanging 10 days with a genuinely exceptional group of young Cranleighans.

VOLUNTARY ACTION MRS BETH LEWIS, RHODES HOUSEMISTRESS

It’s been an eventful year for every area of School life.

As I write this, it would appear on the surface that there is no Voluntary Action (VA) going on at Cranleigh School. However, I know this will be far from the case, as Cranleighans all over the world will have found ways, even without realising they are doing so, to serve their communities. The Firefly co-curricular pages have had suggestions and links for VA activities, but Cranleighans have also found ways to give time to others beyond the ideas that are there.

This academic year saw the change of name from Community Service; an endeavour which is at the heart of what Cranleigh stands for as a community, but that in its name, sounds perhaps a bit too much like a section of the course we teach in Forensic Psychology.

Voluntary Action continues to ‘do what it says on the tin’, but with a more confident call to arms.

I have been delighted that our Voluntary Action placements have continued to grow beyond our Wednesday afternoon slot. We now have a number of different activities in some priority time slots. This has resulted in our being able to visit care homes more frequently, read with primary school children (and teach them Spanish!) and we have extended our partnership with Jigsaw School, where Cranleighans have enjoyed getting to know two pupils in particular as part of a weekly Tuesday afternoon club. Our contingent of Sixth Formers involved in continuing with VA beyond their junior years is steadily growing and something which we are hoping to increase in the next academic year.

I am grateful to all the staff who are involved in helping to run activities on a Wednesday afternoon. I am also thankful and proud of the growing number of Lower Sixth who have volunteered their time to lead activities

MRS CHRIS ALLISON It is sometimes the case that current members of the community are unaware of the full scope of achievements of staff who have served the School for many years, perhaps seeing them only in the light of their current role. I think Chris falls into that category; much of what she currently does goes unseen, and yet she has been an exceptional member of staff holding a wide variety of significant roles for over two decades. Chris joined Cranleigh in the last century, in September 1999, together with her husband Martin, and two daughters, Chloe and Hattie.

AS A ROLE MODEL, AND AFTER TWO DECADES OF TOTAL IMMERSION IN SCHOOL LIFE, CHRIS LEAVES CRANLEIGH WITH A LASTING LEGACY

Initially appointed to teach English, Chris has continued to support her Head of Department through her willingness to teach lower sets, and to achieve outstanding results annually with those students who find English a bit of a struggle. Both Mr Gordon Neill and his predecessor, the late Mr Paul Leggitt, must have thanked their lucky stars to have a colleague of her calibre who enjoyed working with less academic pupils. Her ability to coax outstanding results from the most recalcitrant students year after year is remarkable.

Chris was appointed as the first Housemistress of West in 2001, and took the helm as Cranleigh became a fully co-educational school, which would have brought unique challenges. She would probably refer to her own style as ‘tough love’, but that rather disguises the exceptional time, warmth and care she gave those in her care. Described as ‘formidable, but in the best possible way’, her strong moral compass and clear values set high standards that the girls inherited.

Legend tells of one girl getting up in the middle of the night to confess a misdemeanour to Chris because she knew that she knew, and couldn’t bear the guilt! If this paints a picture of a house governed by fear, then nothing could be further from the truth. Chris demanded high standards, expected those in her care to respect themselves and others, and helped many girls through some difficult times without making them feel like they were taking up her time; the hallmark of a great Housemistress. She has a great sense of humour, and is extremely well-educated in a wide range of subjects, and as girls entered

the Sixth Form, like all good Housemistresses she would lighten the reins and allow them to see the other side of her personality.

One of Chris’s main interests has been in running the Equestrian teams, where she has achieved notable success for several years now. She is an FEI qualified international judge, and this experience has undoubtedly contributed to the recent and ongoing success at national level of the Cranleigh teams.

Chris has embraced each rider’s individual triumph and disaster in equal measure, fostering a genuine team spirit and ethos that balances the individual’s desire to compete at national level with the need to contribute to School teams. All this of course requires great skill in organisation, administration and diplomacy. She will continue to lead the riding at Cranleigh next year, retaining this as she steps down from other roles, but also allowing her the time to develop her role on the equestrian judging circuit.

Chris has worked for some time in the Admissions department, lately concentrating on admission to the Sixth Form, and also notably working with the Foundationers. Much of this work goes unseen due to the confidential nature of the Foundation, but she has put in many hours supporting these pupils and their families, and this work will leave a lasting legacy. She embodies an oft-quoted maxim, that ‘the more you put into Cranleigh, the more you get out’, and she continues to support virtually every event at School, either by attending or helping backstage with productions, and we have hugely appreciated her quiet support. As a role model, and after two decades of total immersion in School life, Chris leaves Cranleigh with a lasting legacy, and the good wishes of hundreds of pupils, parents and colleagues.

MR OWEN CHISHOLM

In particular, Owen possesses two notable qualities: courage and competence. Courage: in his early and mid-twenties, having come to faith in Christ as a student, this young man has taken every opportunity to speak of the truths which are now the bedrock of his life, from 300 to 700 students, aged 7-18. This takes courage and conviction, both of which Owen has in abundance. Perhaps the most courageous of these Chapel talks was when he spoke so movingly about the recent death of his own father with admirable honesty, vulnerability and courage. Never indulgently emotional, always pointing to Jesus, even in the midst of personal grief.

Second, competence. Owen has been thrown into Geography classrooms teaching students aged 10 to 17; he has taken Chapel services marking Remembrance and Christmas, with significant congregations; he’s coached rugby and football; he’s thrown himself into life at Cranleigh and demonstrated a high degree of competence across the board.

So, courage and competence. But of course, Owen himself would say that these qualities are ultimately empty without a third c: Christ.

It has been a great encouragement to me as a fellow Christian, that here is a man who seeks to follow, however imperfectly like me, this person Jesus. And so, despite his own courage and competence, he was right in his final appearance in virtual Chapel to end with these words: ‘don’t listen to me, listen to Jesus’. Amen. God be with you Owen as you move to Charterhouse.

When a 23-year-old whippersnapper from Manchester gave me a call expressing an interest in the post grad chaplain’s assistant role ... I think in my mind I expected the Mancunian floppy haired front man of one my favourite 1990s Britpop bands. I got the floppy hair. But there was very little to suggest that this particular Mancunian, a graduate of Shrewsbury and Edinburgh, had ever ventured further north than Watford. Despite not being Liam Gallagher or Richard Ashcroft, it was clear immediately that this was a chap with the potential of being a good chaplain.

MRS EMMA ELLIS

“

AS A BRIGHT, ARTICULATE AND HARDWORKING PHYSICS GRADUATE, SHE HAS BEEN A GREAT ADDITION

When I first met Emma she was on the receiving end of one of my Sixth Form Physics lessons. With that sort of ‘help’ I’m amazed that she went on to read Physics at Oxford, after Cranleigh. She quickly came back to Cranleigh but on the other side of the desk.

As a bright, articulate and hardworking physics graduate, she has been a great addition.

Over the years, I have seen her develop into an incredibly talented and patient teacher who works so hard for those in her classes.

She is innovative, and creative and crucially takes no nonsense — at all, ever. Instead she simply disarms any potential rabble rousers with firm quick wit and a no-nonsense look.

With all that going for her, it was again, no surprise that she took on more pastoral responsibility in West, then twice in Rhodes where she has become loved and appreciated by the girls for a sympathetic ear that is balanced with a firm footing in practical reality.

She is famed for asking very straightforward questions that seem to unlock the problem.

For example, “but if you can’t do anything about it, is there any point in worrying?”

And my firm favourite when relationship issues abound, “Understood, but have you told him that?”

Whilst coaching swimming in the summer kept her busy, it has been the theatre where she has spent the largest part of her Cranleigh life outside of the classroom, both as a student and then as member of staff.

AND MR HAMISH ELLIS

It is a testament to his character that, despite all of this, he was still keen on becoming a Tutor and I was so pleased that he did so in Loveday. He has been great with his Fourth Form group, worked hard on duty on a Monday and made a name for himself as firm, friendly and fun. A vast array of West Wing quotes, a bit of dark humour and plenty of coffee are all very much ‘on brand’ as he calls it. But there is much more to him than that. He is talented, trustworthy, caring, hugely practical, charmingly geeky and loves Firebird beer nearly as much as I do. I am convinced that Cranleigh will be worse off without them.

They will be missed, but it was inevitable that eventually they would move on to greater things. Hamish is returning to commercial theatre which is where his heart really lies and Emma has been snapped up by Uppingham as Head of Physics: it was only a matter of time.

We wish them well on the next part of their journey and so, as POTUS would say, “what’s next?”

Hamish was a shoo-in for the Theatre Manager role in 2017 not only because of his skill, experience and expertise but also because he fundamentally ‘gets it’. He gets kids, he gets why we are here and he gets the best out of the tech team. By my count, that means that he’s run the show in: eight School productions, six House Plays, three House Performance competitions, three RocSocs, five Cranleigh Lives, countless GCSE and A Level drama practicals, a whole heap of support for assemblies, house events and charity days, visiting speakers and lots at the Prep School — and I’ve probably missed a lot of things out.

MR ANDREW EVANS Mr Andrew Evans came to Cranleigh in 2018 to join the Computer Science department fresh from a PGCE year having made the switch to teaching from an established career in IT and communications. Andrew relished the opportunity to share his love of this subject with pupils and also to develop his own teaching practice, gaining his QTS in 2019 and expanding his timetable to teach some Philosophy classes.

He was a popular Tutor in Loveday and also ran the Archery programme as well as guiding pupils through cyber-security challenges in afternoon programming activities. He leaves us to take up a teaching position at St George’s Weybridge and we wish him all the best for the future.

MRS CLAIRE GRAY

There is a famous line on leadership, which says that “Managers are people who do things right, while leaders are people who do the right thing”. Claire, therefore, is both an excellent manager and outstanding leader.

She is respected by staff, students and parents for her depth of knowledge and her student-centred approach, this alongside her incredible attention to detail and professionalism at all times.

Perhaps some outside of the field of education think that Learning Support purely involves helping students who have been diagnosed with dyslexia and organising access arrangements for exams. Of course, it is much, much more complicated than this and Claire’s tenacity with investigating difficult issues in order to provide the best and most appropriate support for an individual student was a privilege to be a part of. I have learned a huge amount from Claire and I’m absolutely sure my colleagues would say the same.

Pastorally, Claire has been a star Tutor in East house and has been involved in Outdoor Education, as well as with the Cranleigh School Environmental Action Group.

Leading any department is a challenging role; leading a Learning Support department even more so. Any Head of Department would want to leave their department in a much better place than they found it and there’s absolutely no doubt that Claire has done precisely that. I’m incredibly grateful for her hard work, her positivity and her unerring commitment to the School and its students.

Claire leaves us to head to the West Country, though I have it on good authority that she won’t be a stranger to Cranleigh.

MR SAM GREEN Sam joined us on a one-year contract as a Graduate Assistant for the Performing Arts across both schools. He demonstrated a cheerful enthusiasm and a desire to learn new skills, helped out wherever he could and contributed wholeheartedly to a wide range of performances in the few short months he was with us. Sam’s background is in Music Technology, and he helped to record and enable numerous concert performances.

Never shy to use one microphone when a dozen would do, I recall attending a Prep School Informal Concert which I had asked him to record and being greeted by a sight that would not have looked out of place at Abbey Road; but his enthusiasm was infectious, and all his students benefitted from it.

HIS ENTHUSIASM WAS INFECTIOUS, AND ALL HIS STUDENTS BENEFITTED FROM IT

Sam gave a huge amount of time to Prep School drama productions, equally happy running sound and lighting systems as he was painting the set, and often had to learn to use completely unfamiliar systems in a very short space of time. Sam’s great love is the electric guitar, and we were lucky to be able to use him to play in the senior school production of We Will Rock You, where he was absolutely in his element. He learned all the songs in detail, taught many of them to his students too, and showed a natural ease in teaching his one-to-one guitar lessons.

Sam gave a great deal in a short space of time, made many friends, and inspired his pupils with his natural easy-going nature, willingness to get involved, and his musical talent. We wish him every success in the future.

MRS FRAN LEDGER Fran Ledger retired as Medical Centre Sister over the Summer holidays following just over 15 years of dedicated service to the School.

Having arrived with us as a Medical Centre nurse in 2005 after several years working in the local Primary Care Trust, Fran’s promise in the Medical Centre was soon realised and she was promoted to Deputy Sister shortly after her arrival, and promoted again to Sister in 2007.

During her time here, she formed a crucial part of the transition team which saw the relocation of the Medical Centre to the building it still occupies, and oversaw a move to Shere surgery who provide the GP cover for the School.

She leaves us to enjoy retirement with her husband, partly based here in the UK and partly based abroad so they can spend time nearer to their two children.

We wish her a happy, long and richly deserved retirement.

MRS SALLY McLAUGHLIN Sally McLaughlin joined Cranleigh in 2000 primarily to coach netball and lacrosse, but very quickly she got stuck into coaching a wide range of different sports and activities, including tennis, athletics and squash, as well as tutoring in the boarding house (this was when South was the only girls’ house).

LARGE NUMBERS OF GIRLS BENEFITED HUGELY FROM HER TECHNICAL AND TACTICAL KNOWLEDGE AS WELL AS HER ENTHUSIASM, PROFESSIONALISM, AND SENSE OF FUN

As an ex-international netball player and coach, and after a number of years working in the PE department at St Catherine’s Bramley, Sally brought with her a wealth of experience. In her 14-year-stint as 1st team netball coach at Cranleigh, large numbers of girls benefited hugely from her technical and tactical knowledge as well as her enthusiasm, professionalism, and sense of fun. In that same period, in her role with lacrosse, Sally also provided a valuable experience for our top sportswomen who wanted to broaden their horizons by playing a second sport in the winter terms alongside their hockey or netball. Sadly the increasing demands of the main two winter sports led to the disappearance of lacrosse from the sports programme in 2014. However, from the years prior to that, there are many girls who will have good memories of their experiences under Sally’s leadership, whether playing lacrosse on a recreational basis, or as part of the teams that played matches against other schools, and competed successfully in the National Schools competitions for a number of years.

As Head of Netball for a number of years, Sally has also encouraged many a member of Common Room who has lacked confidence with his or her coaching and she has freely shared her ideas and experience. She always cared passionately about getting the most out of the students she worked with, at whatever level, and her contribution to the shaping and development of girls’ sport at Cranleigh has been significant. I would particularly like to pay tribute to the guidance and advice she provided for me when planning and implementing the programme for the junior girls, after the introduction of full co-education at Cranleigh.

Sally has spent the last few years teaching Maths at the Prep School, whilst still coaching netball throughout the 7-18 age range.

She retires now to spend more time with her family, in particular her granddaughter Emmie-Rose. We wish her all the best for the next stage of her life, and she leaves with our heartfelt thanks and admiration.

MISS CAROLYN NICHOLLS

Sally is a legend on the Schools’ netball circuit; when taking teams to tournaments everyone seemed to know her, whether it be players, coaches or officials. She led many a Cranleigh team, of all ages, to success in the county netball competitions, allowing us to compete effectively against some of the top netball schools in the country. She will be fondly remembered as an inspirational sports coach to so many girls over the years, encouraging them to achieve at a high level, whilst still ensuring that their sporting experience was enjoyable.

MISS SANDY NI’MAN Sandy is leaving Cranleigh after two fantastic years of teaching in the Design Engineering department and tutoring in East house. She will continue her teaching career at Wycombe High School.

In her relatively short time at Cranleigh, Sandy has given so much to her pupils and fellow teachers, throwing herself into all aspects of the School and proving herself to be a driven and inspiring teacher and coach.

She will be particularly missed by the hockey department as she has brought her skill and love of the game to successfully coaching both boys’ and girls’ teams. We wish her well as she moves on and commences her PGCE qualification.

MRS CLAIRE OLDFIELD Claire has been a part of the Learning Support team at Cranleigh for 10 years. In that time, she has looked after a vast number of our overseas students both at the Senior and Prep School.

She has worked with them to achieve their full potential in using English in academic, professional and social situations. She has also helped students in the Sixth Form prepare for IELTS exams for university entrance.

For all of the students that she has taught, Claire has been very effective in getting them settled into Cranleigh and feeling comfortable in School, as well as in all of their subjects.

We thank her for all of the work she has done and wish her well in her future endeavours.

MISS HANNAH SHAIRP

Hannah quickly proved herself to be an outstanding teacher and was the natural choice to succeed Angharad as Head of Department in 2018. With boundless creativity and enthusiasm, Hannah is particularly brilliant at pushing the top end to the greatest heights, inspiring her pupils to achieve what she has.

Her passion for all things Latin American is infectious and has rubbed off on those Cranleighans lucky enough to be taught in her A-Level classes. Due to her humble nature it was little known amongst the Common Room that, alongside her teaching, Head of Department and extracurricular commitments, Hannah completed a Masters in Latin American Literature at Birkbeck University gaining a Distinction.

Away from the languages department Hannah has tutored in both East and more recently Rhodes. She has been organised and efficient on duty nights and the only blemish on her record is sleeping through the entirety of the Loveday-Rhodes Charity Night in 2019 having decided to have a quick nap before the Top Gun-themed fun got underway.

Hannah leaves us to relocate to the northeast of England to begin a PhD in Mexican Literature and we have no doubt that she will excel. She leaves with our thanks for everything she has done at Cranleigh and our forgiveness for cheating in the Rastro Market Challenge on the Madrid Trip earlier this year.
