Fairs every year. There was a sense of excitement when the bookcases were opened for parents and pupils to peruse the shelves and make purcha ses. Carrot Awards Again this year, children have been rewarded for their efforts and achievements.
The top three achievers in each class enjoyed pizzas from the pizza oven. All the other children achieved their silver and bronze and enjoyed a treat from T&M’s Ices. Well done to all the children for yet another successful year at CPS.

Lights, Camera, Action All year, weekly sessions have given pupils the opportunity to Learn And Understand New experiences that Challenge their Horizons. LAUNCH day was the culmination of that. This year’s theme was Lights, Camera, Action. The day was filled with activities themed around the film industry — from camera work, film editing, and special effect makeup to karate kid lessons, stop motion animation, acting and what it is like to work in the stunt industry.

Design Technology Throughout each year pupils have the opportunity to work with traditional hand tools, Computer Aided Design software and Computer Aided Manufacture hardware including a laser cutter and 3D printer, as well as workshop tools and machinery. The projects undertaken during the year focus on resistant materials, product and graphic design and electronic products. Our aim at Cranleigh Prep is to inspire as many young minds as possible and set them on the journey to becoming some of the world’s future designers and engineers.

Science Science lessons encompass many of the skills needed in the modern world and in our pupils’ future careers. With problem solving, team work, perseverance and occasionally not getting quite perfect results we learn about what is happening in our immediate vicinity and also look at the bigger picture of Earth and beyond. Cranleigh Prep Science lessons have variety, excitement, active learning and enthusiastic teachers.

Food Technology Children from Form 3 (Year 5) to Form 6 (Year 8) are taught Food Technology in rotation with Design Technology. The main aim in Food Technology lessons is to create a learning environment where the children are happy and enjoy developing and learning new culinary skills. The children develop strong personal and social skills, as well as gaining health education and an understanding of basic nutrition. They also learn about food hygiene and where food comes from.

Drama Technology Acting, singing and dancing are only part of our performing arts story. Behind the scenes, pupils also train in sound, camera operation and editing when producing films in Form 6 (Year 8). This is a development from an earlier course in Form 4 (Year 6) where they learn basic film-making as part of the curriculum. We incorporate training on lighting, visuals and the sound desk when producing live theatre for Form 3 (Year 5) and Form 5 (Year 7). It is important in both film production and live theatre that the children understand how all components are put together. Understanding both the technical and directional side of production can help to make pupils better performers.

Media Club Media Club provides pupils with the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of the film industry, from filming to editing. Using cameras and composition, pupils learn how to capture and create engaging visual content. Through hands-on experience, they gain a deeper understanding of the technical aspects of film production such as lighting, sound and editing.

Music Technology Music Technology is an integral part of music education and pupils relish the opportunity to create and manipulate sounds using different DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations). We have a wonderful music IT suite where pupils use programmes such as Sound Trap and Chrome Music Lab. Every pupil in Forms 5 (Year 7) and 6 (Year 8) has their own iPad on which they can use GarageBand as a precursor to Logic Pro. Music Technology is an inclusive class by which every pupil can produce a complete and satisfying project. Plus, it’s great fun!

Outside Learning is a priority at CPS. In the Lower School we often use our fabulous school grounds to help us learn new things.
This year we took Maths outside when experimenting with capacity and volume. Form 1 (Year 3) participated in an archaeological dig – just like Howard Carter! Our studies on India allowed us to try drawing Rangoli patterns on the paving stones and in Science we have been on scavenger hunts.

Residential to Cobnor Form 2 pupils enjoyed a fun-filled two-night residential to Cobnor Activities Centre, near Chichester. The pupils took part in a range of activities including bushcraft, climbing, walking, football and team-building exercises. They also played fun games in the evening and enjoyed a movie night with popcorn.

Christmas Celebration It was wonderful to be able to perform to a live audience again after two years of filming behind closed doors. Bedecked in Christmas jumpers, Form 2 (Year 4) recited poems with conviction and enjoyed singing a rousing rendition of A Virgin Mary Had a Baby Boy. Form 1 (Year 3) shared their Nativity A Midwife Crisis. The traditional story was unveiled through lively songs and narration, with plenty of fun and laughter along the way.

LAUNCH
(Learning and Understanding New Challenging Horizons) LAUNCH is our weekly enrichment programme. It comprises sessions not found on our curriculum and is there to inspire a love of learning.
The children have had the opportunity to learn over 20 new topics and these have ranged from learning how to mend a puncture to whether or not we actually did land on the moon, and have covered things like mindfulness yoga, festive flower arranging, beekeeping, MasterChef lessons, juggling, Rubik’s Cube Challenges, learning about hedgehogs, coding, Italian and debating the evidence. Over 200 children have enjoyed something different this year and it has been lovely to see the enthusiasm growing from one week to the next.

Codebreaking, Spies and Escape Rooms were the themes for Maths Puzzle Day in the Michaelmas term. Pupils in all year groups completed a wide range of activities to both explore and appreciate maths beyond the classroom, textbooks and assessments.

Dressed in red, white and blue pupils enjoyed a day of Royal celebrations! In Art, pupils used acrylics to paint sections of the King. The image used was from a photograph taken in 2013 by Nadav Kander, cropped and digitally styled to suit the needs of young artists.

With all the favourite panto clichés, plenty of over-the-top characters, a fast-paced, hilarious script and clever, catchy parodies of some very popular songs, we joined Arthur and his flamboyant entourage on their quest to save Camelot from dark forces, whilst trying hard not to be upstaged by a Forest and a Twig!

Our trip to Mill on the Brue was an incredible three days in a wonderful place! The children had a fantastic time, taking part in a wide range of activities including: canoeing, bush craft, assault course and, of course, everyone’s favourite: the giant zip wire. The children really enjoyed having some time to chill out in their dorms, chatting with their friends and making some lifelong memories.

The Chocolate Lady Form 3 (Year 5) welcomed local award-winning chocolatier Joanna Marshall from Kokoh Chocolate. She explained how her Fairtrade company works, demonstrated how she makes her chocolate and, most excitingly of all, taught the pupils how to taste chocolate like a professional!
Butser Ancient Farm Form 3 (Year 5) experienced all things Anglo-Saxon on a visit to Butser Ancient Farm. They enjoyed a snack around the fire in a reconstructed house and tried making medieval pottery and wattle walls. They also became archaeologists.

Team activities included Jacob’s Ladder, buggy building and orienteering. Everyone’s favourite activity was the Giant Swing where team members hoist each other high into the air before the exhilarating drop and swing over the tree tops! The pupils enjoyed the beauty of the Surrey Hills on a morning hike, appreciating the wonderful surroundings in which we live. They also had to put their trust in each other on the Sensory Trail and learned the importance of quiet and relying on their other senses while blindfolded.

Ski Trip At the end of the Michaelmas term, 16 pupils travelled to Sestriere, Italy, for the Independent Schools Ski Championship. Conditions were favourable after some fresh snowfall and pupils enjoyed race training and competing in slalom and giant slalom events.

Sailing Trip XXX
In the Summer term Form 4 (Year 6) pupils set off to Rockley Point, Poole, for a weekend of sailing. They learnt how to rig the boats on dry land and practised the basics of steering and tacking. Out in the estuary, in pairs, they tried to master how to tack round buoys in a figure of eight, with one steering and one in charge of the main sheet. All pupils successfully completed their Stage 1 RYA course.

Boarders’ Burns Night Boarders enjoyed a traditional Burns Night. A bagpiper played as the haggis entered the dining room and the boarders ate a traditional supper of haggis with whiskey sauce, neeps and tatties! Dinner was followed by much laughter and merriment as the boarders learnt some Scottish dancing.

The Handwriting Competition went in favour of Spades and took them to within one single point of winning the year’s House Cup. RESIDENTIAL TO YORK Form 5 pupils visited York on what was to be the school’s last History trip to this wonderful city. They enjoyed the magic of Helmsley Castle and walked in the footsteps of medieval monks in the ruins of Byland Abbey. They also had a chance to visit the National Railway Museum, York Castle Museum and the recently refurbished Clifford’s Tower with its endless stairs – certainly not for the fainthearted. A fabulous time was had by all.

Dance We were thrilled to showcase the incredible talent and passion of our pupils in the Dance Show themed ‘Movie Musicals’. This year’s performance featured captivating dances from Forms 1, 2 and 3 (Years 3, 4 and 5) curriculum classes and the extra-curricular dance classes, highlighting the progress and creativity of our dancers. One of the highlights of the year was the collaboration with guest teachers who brought their expertise and introduced our pupils to different dance styles. This exposure to diverse techniques and perspectives has enriched their dance education and inspired their artistic growth.

House Music Competition
Musicians of all ages compete as soloists in the House Music Competition. Pupils enjoyed a full day of performances with adjudications from Cranleigh Music staff.

Choral Singing Singing is a big part of life at CPS — we love a good sing-song! Our numerous choirs sing repertoire in a range of styles from pop and folk to classical. The Chamber Choir won a place in the final of the National Choir of the Year Competition and were invited to sing in Symphony Hall in Birmingham!
The CPS Chapel Choir joined the Senior School Choir, Cranleigh Choral Society and the Merriman Symphony Orchestra in a largescale performance of Tippett’s A Child of Our Time. What an amazing experience for our young musicians!

Concert Series The Lower School Concert Series provides a platform for our younger pupils to experience professional music right here in school.
In the Lent term the Cranleigh School Big Band entertained the pupils with a selection of classic jazz repertoire as well as some modern favourites. The Lower School Summer Term concert was the lovely narrated story of Babar the Elephant by Poulenc.
In the Michaelmas Term the Mish Mash production company did a performance based on the story of Beegu by Alexis Deacon.
