The museum showcased an incredibly impressive number of invaluable personal artefacts and photos belonging to staff and pupils’ grandparents and even great grandparents. It was particularly special to see how many children wrote accounts of their own personal family stories from WWI and WWII, demonstrating how much the wars have touched so many of us and left their mark. Pupils, parents and staff visited throughout the day to view the wide array of items. Artefacts ranged from medals, uniforms and weapons from WWI (including a sword of the Vice-Admiral of the Fleet) to a rare copy of a diary written by a member of the SAS, as well as personal letters and drawings from both World Wars.

Pop-upmuseum

As part of the School’s commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the WW1 Armistice, Toby Batchelor organised a fantastic ‘Pop Up’ Museum in the Hub.

4

Remembrance Service and Peace Walk

The children gathered in Chapel, whilst Max P and Henry P played expertly on the bagpipes, to mark 100 years since the end of the First World War.

We were joined by Capt (Retd) Dan Reed, current Deputy Housemaster of Loveday at the Senior School, who served as a Captain in the Royal Welsh before working at Cranleigh School.

The Chapel Choir performed Willcocks’s ‘Lord, Make Me An Instrument Of Thy Peace’ with beautiful solos by Maisy B and Alice P. Jamie T played the ‘Last Post’ and ‘Reveille’ as the children and staff respected a two minute silence.

Our moving service was followed by a Peace Walk to the village memorial and centenary garden with all local schools.

During our topic on ‘Around the World’, we ‘Visited India’ and learnt all about making Rangoli patterns.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL Expedition

Firstly, 1U and 1D were talking about the skills you need to have to be an archaeologist when suddenly Mr Batchelor came in and sent Form 1 on a mission to find some lost artefacts! Taking turns to use the shovels, they started to dig. To their surprise, they found lots of artefacts – for instance: a bit of gold plate, some painted statues, some tiles and pieces of a cooking pot. After all that fun, they gathered round and picked two of their artefacts to share and talk about.

HASLEMERE Museum

We visited Haslemere Museum so we could learn more about the Egyptians. We did two workshops, mostly about mummification. In one of them we mummified our own barbies and wrapped them up in bandages. In the other one we saw a real Ancient Egyptian Mummy called Pa-Er-Abu.

In the first workshop we saw a pointed sort of thing that was really sharp and pulled out the brain and the rest of the organs. It was SO disgusting! I learnt that you had to take out every organ in the right canopic jar.

The students travelled around the school and learnt about five different holiday regions in France and what the area had to offer. They designed ski wear for Rhône-Alpes; they played Pétanque in Provence; they ate crêpes in Brittany; they got a guided 360 degree tour of the best tourist attractions in Paris, and in the Pays Basque, they learnt how to ask and understand “les directions pour aller à la plage s’il vous plaît ?”. We may even have influenced their “choix de destination pour les vacances” for next year!

LOWER
SCHOOL

Form 1’s innovative take on the traditional Nativity story, ‘The Magical Christmas Jigsaw’, had the audience marvelling at the enormous quantity of narration & songs. Highlights were the Benny Hill-style ‘Run with haste to Bethlehem’ and the more melodic & reflective final number, ‘Now Our Story Has Been Told’.

Form 2 took part in the annual King’s Shilling event at Cedar Court, which brought military leaders, residents of Cedar Court, the Mayor of Waverley and our pupils together to remember the significant sacrifice servicemen and women of the past and the present have given for our country. Throughout the event, the children sang a repertoire of WWII songs and listened to speeches from the visiting dignitaries.

Eco-FishWORKSHOP

Form 1 and 2 had great fun learning how to recycle unwanted household packaging into useful objects in their EcoFish Workshop. They were each given an empty juice carton and, after being guided through folding and cutting them into specific shapes, they created very handy little wallets!

26

It a ly TASTE OF

‘A Taste of Italy’ was the theme for Form 2’s activities on Open Morning during the Summer term. New Pupils’

1. What is your first memory of CPS?

CHARLIE: My first memory of CPS was before I actually joined. I remember walking on to Top Pitch with no idea where anything was. I was really nervous until I met the rest of the year. I remember their kind welcome.

ORLA: My first memory of CPS was my first day at school after boarding the night before; I did not get a very good night’s sleep so I was a bit tired. I remember walking to my first lesson and it was in the Ferrier Building. I walked up the stairs and banged my head on the flower pot!

2. How did you manage in the first few days when everything was new; the buildings, the teachers, your classmates?

CHARLIE: I felt like I was in a maze, and had no idea where I was going. Luckily I had Jamie T as my shadow and a few others who I previously knew before joining the school who helped me lots. The teachers were all helpful and lots of fun. Everyone gave me a warm welcome.

ORLA: Well I just went with the flow and when I was stuck and confused, I would ask someone in my set for help, and the teachers were very helpful and showed me where to go

3. Have you got a favourite subject? What is it and why?

CHARLIE: My favourite subject is definitely Music. Mrs Williams is a very good and kind teacher who makes the lessons fun and enjoyable, one of the many highlights of the week.

ORLA: My favourite subjects aren’t really all academics; they are Maths, Art and Food Tech. I find Maths very challenging, and when I am doing Maths questions the only things that are going through my head are numbers and letters and all things to do with the question. I enjoy Art because nothing can be wrong and there are no limits. I find Food Tech a very relaxing subject, and I also always cook or bake with my Mum at home.

4. Life at CPS is very busy. What is the best time of day for you?

CHARLIE: I love the whole school day at CPS, being with my friends and having lots of fun.

ORLA: Going back to the Boarding House after a long day at school is the biggest relief, as I can jump on my bed as soon as I get there.

5. What is your favourite thing about boarding?

ORLA: Probably on a Thursday when we have boarders’ choice dinner which is always very tasty... and fun activities such as Human Table Football.

6. You love music. Tell me about your musical week at CPS.

CHARLIE: I tend to have lots of fun Music lessons throughout the week, making it very busy. We play amazing music from contemporary to classical. At the end of the day, we have priority time where I am a member of orchestras and bands; I love all the activities that I do, and they are an amazing way to end the day.

Maths Puzzle Day happens every year at CPS. It involves a range of activities for the whole school, developing teamwork skills and general Maths ability. Throughout the day, pupils do multiple Maths-related activities run by either the staff or other companies who come in. For the first time, pupils (minimum of two per year group) were given the opportunity to become live vloggers (video-bloggers).

This year the activities included an interactive talk on probability, a Maths Relay, a Circlemania (a patterndesigning activity using only circles to improve our use of compasses), brainteasing 3D puzzles and a very intense, competitive card game called ‘Set’. The day was a huge success and taught us a lot of new skills. We also enjoyed the change of scenery from the Maths classroom! A huge amount of time, effort and planning is put into the day by the staff and it was well worth it.
