Loveday House Summer Term Newsletter 2015 Housemaster’s Comments Loveday has enjoyed a splendid term with success in all areas of school life, a particular highlight being sixteen Loveday boys receiving prizes on Speech Day – quite an achievement. There has been plenty of laughter and happiness despite the pressures of exams, and the good weather and light evenings of the second half of term has seen Loveday Field (at the back of the house) almost worn bare such is the amount of informal football that has been played. Boarding houses of 100 are almost unique and as I often say to prospective parents, if it was just me running the house it would be a disaster! I therefore am keen to pass on my thanks to Mr Welch and Mr Page for their unstinting support and commitment to the house. Huge thanks too to the Matrons: Megan, Liz and Diana who are an oasis of calm in the frenzy of activity that is a normal day in Loveday. We are fortunate to have one of the best tutor teams in the school who are in the house at least three times a week: guiding, advising and caring for their tutees – my sincere thanks to them also. Finally, many thanks are also due to House Captain Bill Bathurst, his Deputies Orlando Taylor and James Harris and Head of School Charlie Gilbert, who have been an excellent leadership group and along with their team of wider prefects have ensured the house is purposeful, successful and above all a happy place. The summer term is always tinged with the sadness of goodbyes. The Upper Sixth all move on to pastures new and we wish them well as exciting new challenges await. We also say goodbye to three tutors: Mrs Griffiths (who had been matron in Cubitt for many years and has taught music here for even longer) stepped in to the breach after long term illness affected the tutor body and has done an amazing job – she stands down to return to normal music duties and prepare for her and husband Mr Griffiths’ retirement next year. Ms Eleanor Coyle has served two years in the house and leaves to become an army officer and enter Sandhurst – Lower Fifth tutoring is good practice for commanding squaddies, I think. Mr Verdon departs to become Deputy Housemaster of East having been snapped up on the transfer market – Loveday’s loss is certainly East’s gain. I’d like to pass on my sincere thanks to all of these fine tutors for their considerable efforts. Finally, Mr Ben Page and his wife, Rose, move on from High Upfold after three years as Warden there. Ben has done an amazing job and has been a really hands-on Warden. He knows the boys in residence very well and has balanced academic rigour with a lightness of touch and no little humour. He has been a tower of strength to me and really helped Loveday grow. I hope you all enjoy a wonderful summer and I look forward to seeing you in September. Andy
