CHRISTMAS NEWSLETTER Housemaster’s Comments
Another amazingly busy Michaelmas term has ended. I knew we were all ready for a rest when I stood in front of the House waiting for the final morning chapel of term to start: one by one I was greeted by a dozen yawns and coughs…we are all pretty tired! This newsletter will give you some indication of why we are so weary because the Loveday boys have achieved an enormous amount in these fifteen weeks. I hope you enjoy it. As Christmas approaches it seems pertinent to focus on some of the charitable work that the boys in the house have undertaken: there is always a danger that at this time of year we get rather too caught up in the fun and excesses of the season and forget those who are less fortunate than us. That is why we were delighted with the response to our Charity Prefect’s appeal for presents for those attending ‘Combat Stress’ centres over the Christmas period. On the day before term finished Xavier Iafrate, Alex Hills and Liz took over 100 wrapped presents to the Leatherhead centre from where they will be distributed. Thank you very much for your generosity. At half term four of the Upper Sixth travelled to Kawama in Zambia to volunteer for the Beyond Ourselves project at our sister school, this is in addition to another Sixth Former who went on the summer trip. In the last six years more than 30 Loveday boys have travelled to Zambia to help with this project, as well as several tutors and one former housemaster (Mr Wilson!). Each week a dozen or so boys volunteer to help in the local community here in Cranleigh: visiting care homes, helping with students from schools for disadvantaged children, taking part in community gardening projects and various other activities. We are very fortunate to work at or attend a school like Cranleigh, and should probably do more to help those less blessed but I am very proud of the charitable efforts of the boys in the House. May I wish all those associated with Loveday a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Best wishes, Andy
