From the Housemaster

JMW

And so another year in East House draws to a close. On Friday and Saturday we said our farewells to our current U6 leavers and wished them every success as they move on to pastures new. Almost all of them remarked to me how their time at Cranleigh seemed to fly by and they urged the years below them to seize every opportunity the school offers whilst they can. This has been another great term for East, with success coming in the house swimming and senior house golf. Our annual music evening was also a highlight for me. It is wonderful to see all the musical talent East boys have and great to see all of the year-groups getting involved. I have received quite a few call from talent agents following the public release of the East House Staff music video as well! We are very sad to be loosing three great members of the East team to rival houses next term. Dan Reed and Ian Rossiter are to become Deputy and Warden of Loveday, with Pete Bradnock becoming the new Deputy of Cubitt. They have all been fantastic in East and I wish them every success in their new positions. It has been a fantastic year in East and I thank you for all your support in our efforts to provide the best possible boarding experience to your boys. I hope you have a wonderful summer holiday and look forward to seeing you again in September.

Junior House Golf

Tom Campbell We played our first match against Cubitt, with a team of Jeff Olsen, Tom Campbell, Louis Halsted, Harry Hall and Lex Edwards. Two of our players won easily, and two lost badly, leaving the match in the hands of Harry Hall, who managed to come back from losing badly and win us the match, allowing us to make it to the finals.

In finals we had a different team, made up of Jeff Olsen, Tom Campbell, Louis Halsted, Ross Kiely and Will Granger, and once again two of our players won their games, and two of them lost theirs, leaving the fate of the match in the hands of our 5th player, who unfortunately lost. This put us in second place.

Junior House Cup: Piers Nicholls Senior House Cup: Matt Ludlow

House Badminton

Jamie Sherlock The senior house badminton, a highly anticipated event. It was a monumental occasion and spirits were high. The team consisted of none other than George Durston, Ben Larwood, Jamie Sherlock and Richard Eamey. Faced with a tough opposition in all games, both teams lost them all, yet it was a sterling effort worthy of a hearty congratulations. In the junior event Piers Nicholls and Sam Lubbock paired up and had mixed results. The other pair of Jeff Olsen and Edward Mao were triumphant in all bar one of their games, with East

House finishing a respectable second over-all.

House Cross Country

Joel Carne

A typically miserable English day greeted the cross-country runners this term, and in spite of the fact that the East boys’ forte isn’t generally in long distance ability, many bravely put their hands up to the task. The juniors began in full force, but up against some tough opposition found themselves fighting for every place. Special mentions go to George Legge and Will Grainger for sterling spirit. East house held some fierce competitors within the middle school and we were certainly in with a chance. Along with other highly ranked East members, Cal St. Johnson came in first by a considerable margin for the Upper Fifth to help us win that age group. Last but not least, the seniors topped off a hard but gritty performance securing a strong second place in the overall competition. Jack Taylor gave bookies’ favourite Harry de Blaby a run for his money by breathing down his neck in a pulsating sprint finish, but narrowly conceded 2nd place. Well done to all involved and those who came down to support in the dismal weather – bring on next year!
