One hundred years ...Cranleigh prep’s centenary is being celebrated this year By Jordan C, 6Ho What was Cranleigh Prep like in 1913? A hundred years ago, Cranleigh Prep first opened its doors to pupils in September of that year, with Reverend Mehrtens as Master. At that time it was a boy’s Preparatory School and was a separate school to Cranleigh School which was ‘over the road’ on the other side of Horseshoe Lane. Then, they only had Preparatory House, which is where the library, girls’ boarding house and the dining hall are now. The first year girls were accepted into the school in 2001, when Mr. Roulston ‘opened the doors’ to a few girls. Over the years, the number of girls has risen rapidly and we are now a truly co-educational school with provision for boarding for boys and girls. Over the year the school’s appearance has changed. The next current building built was the Ferrier Building in 1984, opposite a long cabin which contained the old music school and a pet room. As an extension to the Ferrier Building, the Wyatt Hall was formally opened by former headmaster Mr.Wyatt in December 1988 as a muliti-purpose hall, and it still is a crucial facility for this school. The widow of former headmaster Mr. Wheeler formally opened the Wheeler building in 1996 opposite the Ferrier Block on another side of the Quad , and that contained a changing room and three classrooms, which are used for two Form One classrooms and an ICT room. The Couper building was built in 2004 over an area where the outdoor swimming pool used to be. Here eight classrooms are based, including two science labs, and more changing rooms. This building was formally opened by school governor Mr. Couper on Speech Day, 2004. Our school has been celebrating this significant milestone with various events. The Roulston Centenary Building was opened on the 10th May 2013 by the former Master, Mr. Roulston. On the 24th of May, we had our Centenary Summer Concert and this was opened with a Centenary Fanfare written by Mr. Bob Wilson. The concert was followed by a Centenary Tea which had to be held indoors due to the adverse weather that afternoon. Speech Day also had a Centenary theme to it, and on the 28th of June, before the Final Assembly and Charity Day, the burial of our time capsule took place. The items in the capsule have been suggested by pupils and staff over the course of this year. Later this year, the trees will be planted for a new orchard in September and our new copse will be planted and dedicated on 12th October following the generous donation of trees from parents and friends of the school. Mr McNiven has also been commissioned to prepare a painting of our school and we will also produce a Centenary Yearbook at the end of the year. We hope that you all enjoy celebrating the school’s Centenary this year ...
