North newsletter summer term 2013

North House Summer Term 2013 Towards the end of the summer term your thoughts as a Housemaster start to move towards September and what the next year will bring. The U6th leave a fantastic legacy and one which the L6th will be proud to carry on. The various leadership events (discussion evenings, Charity Day, the trip to Sayers Croft and the leadership morning) have all shown that the current L6 are more than up to the task. The last week of this term has been a particularly tough time but I was very impressed how they stepped into the void to keep the House moving forward and happy. The summer term is always dominated by exams but there has been a lot of good hearted endeavour by the boys in North across all areas of school life. However, as I said to the boys in House Prayers, your education must continue over the summer; it should be an ongoing process and not one which is completely dependent on teachers or adults to inspire. Cranleigh is a great environment to find ‘your thing’ and I really hope that your son continues to pursue his own interests over the coming weeks.

North House Summer Term 2013 House swimming North entered house swimming this year with high expectations as a large number of participants were in the swimming team and performing well. They did not disappoint. The gala began and we proceeded to dominate in most events. Swimmers such as Harry McCagherty, Tom Taylor and Charlie Cutting leading from the front, also with some promising young talents coming through the ranks like Tom Hickinbotham. This carried on throughout the vast majority of the gala and we went on to win comfortably. The house as a whole showed incredible support and this was a large contributing factor to the enjoyment of the competition. Well done boys!!! By Charlie Cutting

Junior House Badminton The junior house badminton team consisted of Ollie Rodriguez and Sam Scutt as the first pair and Ben Strickland and Freddie Ricks as the second pair. In the first round we played Cubitt and both pairs were lucky to scrape a win. This put us into a strong position going into the second round against East where we annihilated the opposition. Unbeaten we entered the third and final round against Loveday where we were beaten on the day but without disgrace as they were a worthy match for the men in burgundy.

Senior Water polo The entire house was looking forward to senior water polo as it was the pinnacle of the sporting year. We started off with a win against Loveday and that set us in good stead for the remaining match against Cubitt. This was followed by a win against Cubitt which was a great achievement as we have now won the Senior Waterpolo in two consecutive years and aim to do the same next year. Overall the day was extremely memorable and everyone contributed to the success of the team.

North House Summer Term 2013

Junior House athletics House athletics started off brilliantly with all the North boys pumped for their events and ready to destroy the other houses. Angus Dahl had a particularly good day winning most of his events and giving an outstanding performance in coming 2nd in the 1500m. I had a solid attempt at running until… at the last minute I tore my hamstring, but I still ran for my house! Harry wills had a crack at triple jump but clearly jumping like a girl isn’t Harry’s thing. Alex Parson and Milo Goldsmith both made leaps and bounds in the high jump but strong competition meant they were robbed of victory. The highly anticipated javelin, admirably undertaken by Charlie Hardy, was thrilling to say the least and he took 2nd place. At the end of the day high spirits were achieved and we left with a sense of pride.

Inter-Boys Athletics The day started for the Inter-boys with a dramatic run from our own AJ. He was leading the pack and became dangerously close to the finish line but then the unthinkable happened...he tripped and allowed Cubitt to take to win. Meanwhile, Ben Gasson’s gym sessions were clearly put into good practice, winning the javelin and coming second in the shot put. Whereas, in the house high jump Ben Yakas did phenomenally by beating his own personal best and achieving 1.4m. In addition, Alex Gook made a strong performance in coming second in the 100m final and winning the house shot put. Overall, we all enjoyed ourselves and finished the day with a close finish by coming joint second.

Senior House athletics House athletics the event where you test the speed, strength and endurance of each house as always North performed to the highest standards.

Julian Browning and Jamie Harrison performed extremely well in the discus coming 2nd and 3rd.

With Joey “tough guy” Quinn coming dead last in 1500m. Nathanael Farrant competed in the javelin where the wannabe Spartan threw himself into a respectable 3rd place. This year people exceeded their expectations and as always North pushed themselves to the limit.

North House Summer Term 2013 Junior house tennis The day started quite slowly against Loveday where all the pairs took their time warming up and getting into their rhythm with the only pair to win a match being Alex Parsons and Alex Gook. Then, slowly but surely the pairs started playing better against Cubitt with Ben Yakas and Charlie Hardy winning their match 6-0 with some stunning pieces of play. Then in the final match against East, all the pairs started playing ‘proper’ tennis with 3 wins a draw and a loss.

All in all a very successful day with Parsons and Gook winning all their matches and being at the heart of the team. Next year we aspire to play better and take the house tennis by storm which I know we have the talent to do.

North House Charity Day North house charity day is always special and this year was no less the case. The lower sixth had decided to sponsor ‘Tildy’s Trust’, a charity which helps to fight childhood leukeumia and had a personal meaning to the whole house but particularly the lower sixth. The theme was international sports. Eight teams were selected, each wanting to prove themselves as the ones to beat, each willing to do anything to win.

‘Weyman’s Wheelbarrows’ rolled their way to win the esteemed Danish Longball but were outdone by ‘ Delicious Danjos’ who swung their balls to victory in American Dodgeball. ‘The Raiders’ then battled their way to win the ‘Gaelic Football’ and then progressed to triumph in the British Bulldog and so taking the championship overall. All in all, the house came together to not only raise money for a great cause but most of all to revel in an experience which will be admired for years to come.

Senior House Tennis On a fairly rainy day North hit the tennis courts with high hopes, led by the Tennis Vice-Captain Giovanni De Nardi.. Jon Paddle put up a good performance, with Max Haycock and Toby Rigby playing some top tennis. After an unhealthy mixture of losses and wins….we lost.

North House Summer Term 2013 North House Music Evening The night kicked off with classical opened by Mike Linford singing a beautiful version of “Blow Blow Thou Winter Wind”. Harry McCagherty followed on the oboe with his brother Christian, and Tim Ayling on the French horn and singing without fault. Callum Kent performed fanasticallyl despite trying to hold back his smiles when looking up at his year. The evening developed a more acoustic feel with the UVth singing “I Dreamed A Dream”. They performed well to begin with but then, failing to stay in tune, broke out into laughter making the audience hysterical. Julian Browning then played guitar and sang very well. Tommy Taylor, Luke Boyd and Max Haycock performed brilliantly with Tommy delivering his raps faultlessly. Dan Pienaar and James Beggs came onto the stage and played confidently in their first house performance. For a fourth former to perform in front of their house is extremely hard and Ben Browning and Tom Chesterman did it very well; Tom singing ‘Small Bump' Ed Sheeran, and with Tom Parker and Theo Gloyens playing ‘Vertigo’. The UVIth followed with a tribute to the great deputy House Master Mr Witcombe. They sang “Delilah” by Tom Jones which the Welshman loved. The audience were then enthralled by the LVIth dance. It began by John Pennock re-enacting Will Ferrell’s dance in ‘Old School’. Norths evening concluded by Mr Burnett giving a farewell speech to the great Welshman. The event was a huge success and special thanks to all the performers for making the evening happen.

North House Summer Term 2013 Senior House Cricket We were drawn against East on Clare’s Oak in the Semi-Final. Ultimately they proved too strong for us with a strong batting line-up. Special mention must go to Toby Savill for bowling superbly for a five for a decent display with the bat too. Against Cubitt we posted a competitive total thanks to beaut knocks from both Rory Kennedy and Loose Kent. Happily, we bowled much better than we did against East and won the game by 15 runs meaning that we finished third overall.

By Luke Boyd Junior House cricket Firstly we played Loveday, we lost the toss and they chose to field. We thought that our opponents were going to be very good and competitive…unfortunately they were. We tried our best but our opponents got the better of us, and we sadly lost. Then for the 3rd and 4th playoff, we played a confident Cubitt side. We tried our best efforts with our batting such as our main man George “the big man” Page. He got a strong 22 of 5 balls… but they were just too good. We sadly lost our final game but we all had a great time and excelled in our banter against our opponents, so I believe it was a moral victory.

North House Summer Term 2013 HOUSE MURAL This year’s mural was a phenomenal achievement by a phenomenal young man. This was Will’s second house mural but by far his most complex. His desire was for every student to be involved and to then create an underlying ‘House Image’. The result is an amazing addition to the House Room and reflects the painstaking work on his part to bring it to fruition. At times he was naturally frustrated by the general ineptitude of the boys (and staff) with their drawing skills but he should be rightly proud of the outcome. EMB

GOOD BYES.....

JMW... James joined North in 2007 and was soon identified as the kind of chap you want involved in the House. In 2008 he became Warden and then, when EMB took over the House, he became Deputy Housemaster. He has been terrific in this role and we will all miss him. However, he is ready (and able!) for the next challenge as Housemaster of East and we wish him, Jo and Ethan all the very best.

DIA...’Ardles’ joined North in 2009 and immediately made a huge impact. A very experienced school-master he brought all that to bear in his relationships with the pupils and will be sorely missed by all who enjoyed his convivial company and care.

THJB... Tom joined North in 2006 and has brought a completely different dimension to the House. His quiet manner and patience with students made him a very popular tutor and he was the inspiration behind the House Murals. We wish him well....

VJB... Joined North in 2010. As the better half of EMB she has been a wonderful tutor over the last three years. We wish her well in her new teaching job at Priorsfield (although she will still be living in North!)

MPJ... Martin has been in North for a year and his good humour and quite efficiency will be missed... Good luck in Dubai!

North House Summer Term 2013 Goodbye to the U6....

Inclusive, fun, spirited, ambitious, kind, tolerant, leaders, respected... They have been a fantastic role model for the house and prove the importance of a year group being cohesive thus letting individuals be themselves and find themselves. As one parent commented, they are proof of the following adage:

‘Like branches of a tree, we grow in different directions but our roots remain as one.......’ We will miss them SO much!!!!!

And of course....

North would not be North without the BEST matrons and the best cleaners in the school..... Thanks to Marion and Karen for being SO fantastic......
