In the ferocious cold that dogged much of the term I learnt an interesting German word: handschuhschneeball‐ werfer, apparently meaning ‘somebody who wears gloves to throw snow balls’ and that is used in general to de‐ scribe anyone with a lily‐livered attitude to life. I haven’t yet come across its opposite, but whatever an un‐ handschuhschneeballwerfer is would be the perfect word to sum up the way the boys in East have tackled the various challenges of school life this term. Full‐on, gloves‐off energy and enthusiasm. It’s been magical to be a part of again and I hope these pages give just a small flavour of that get‐up‐and‐go.

Will Yeeles once said; ‘It’s not taking part that counts, it’s wining that matters’. This was the exact philosophy that the football team adopted. We set out, onto slightly waterlogged pitches to begin our campaign against a rather weak Cubitt side, with one stat being that we had more 1st team players than they did in the first 4 school sides. After a misjudgement from yours truly, we found ourselves one down, and this gave us the kick start we needed to start playing our football, with Jerrick firing a shot in to equalise and then Blacky slotting home the winner with five minutes to spare. In the final, and arguably the best house football match, we played a strong North side. After holding out some early pressure Matt Balmer capitalised on a goalkeeping error to put us ahead. However, North drew level before the break, but that man again; Balmer was on hand to put us back in the lead at half time. After a cagy second half we were 3‐1 up with a couple of minutes to go, and that’s right you guessed it, Balmer there again to complete his hat‐trick and deliver the silverware back to east for a second year running.

Despite the Lent term being so short, a number of things have taken place. Hockey continues to go from strength to strength at Cranleigh. East have a number of first team players and they again have been very successful this season. The football season has also been successful, the first team losing just two games, with the 3rds remaining unbeaten throughout. The School Play ‘Tis Pity’ took place after Long Leave which was a success involving 4 members of the Sixth Form in East. The Dance and Fashion Show proved to be both a showcase of talent and entertainment, again involving many East lads. This term really has flown by, the Fourth Form have really settled down and seem to be enjoying their first year. Next term is possibly both the most enjoyable and most important one, particularly for the top three year groups. If enough work is done over Easter then the Summer Term always seems to be a favourite. A quick note must also go to those doing the DW international canoe race over Easter. The challenge will be gruelling but I hope the 4 guys in the Upper Sixth enjoy themselves – it is a great achievement. Thank you as ever to Jenny and Sue for their amazing work and to Mr Bird, Mr Forsdike and Mr Lane for their support and the tutors too. I hope everyone has a great break, and I look forward to seeing the house again next term.

House Football

Weather wise it’s been a mixed bunch, freezing then mild and now back to a chilly spell. Roll on the Summer term when the boys can go outside and let off steam and enjoy the school grounds more. The 6th form are doing such a good leadership role, such a nice atmosphere in the house, every‐one looking after each other. Hope next term, with all the exams coming up, everyone returned from the break having rested and regained, health and energy. Have a lovely Easter break. Hope we get some sunshine to clear up all these coughs and colds. HAPPY EASTER ‐ Best wishes from Jen and Sue xx

The Water polo kicked off with a challenging fixture against Loveday. With the more experienced of the pack ‐ Joe Hellman and Ed Russell leading the way, it would take more than just experience and skill to beat a determined Loveday team. Loveday's somewhat useful contribution from a few players meant that Freddie Gass was really put under some hot pressure. Though in typical East spirit, Gass battled through and managed to keep out all but 2 of the many shots that came his way. Majestic midfield play from people such as Matt Ludlow ensured that we kept the offensive on the Loveday defence but it in the end it seemed that with some good keeping (not as good as Tom Gass') from the Loveday keeper, the goal was not to be found by the East team. With many first appearances from people like Freddie Norton, meant that despite a 2‐0 loss it seems that East is with no doubt that in the many years to come, the East House and Cranleigh Water polo teams will be with no shortage of skilled athletes to take the plunge.

After a confident team talk and build up through callovers, the actual performance of the team was disappointing. The Friday afternoon timing, often meant we could never quite fulfilled our true potential. Ben Foster led the junior section with pride, nearly ensuring every match lasted more than 20 moves, and Charlie Adorian and myself nearly won our matches. It could be fair to say we tried but came up short against far more talented players. Still next year to look forward to.
