Basketball
Michael Dolman
What can be said about House basketball? Well, talent from the motley East boys, isn’t at the top of the list, unfortunately, but I cannot fault their work ethic and ‘never give up’ attitude which they brought to the court. The 4th form, in their first experience, got given a taste of House basketball; fast furious and fouls galore, but it seemed like every other House had pro basketball players in their ranks. The boys did well to grasp 4th place. The 5th form didn’t fare any better, matching the result of the 4th years. Surely, the 6th form could produce a better performance? Following an interesting team selection, the warm up promised great things, with 3 pointers being sunk with what seemed relative ease; but they just didn’t go in when game time came. This led to another defeat, but we were not downhearted. We got going again in the 3rd/4th playoff, and to many people’s amazement our shot basket ratio was above the 2% of every other House basketball competition, maybe even touching the 8%!! This new found range allowed us to go one better and clinch a solid 3rd. Overall, great commitment was shown by all, in keeping with the East tradition.
Matrons Corner
Sue/Jenny
Can we continue to remind all lower‐school students that they must hand in all medication to the Matrons. We will store, record and administer them. All medication must come in to school in the original chemist box with typed instructions for dosage, frequency and students name. When dayboys stay‐over can they please bring in bedding and let Mr Lane know at least 24 hours in advance. The usual reminder not to send in too much tuck, and to reinforce that popcorn is banned because of the mess it creates. Can we also ask that not too many ‘processed’ ready meals get sent in for the 4th formers, we have found quite a lot of these meals have gone out of date and have needed to be thrown out. A big plea to name ALL boys’ clothing and towels. So many not named and this makes it so hard for us Matron’s: Especially boxers and socks! HAPPY CHRISTMAS ‐ Best wishes from Jen and Sue xx

This term in East House has been extremely successful. The new fourth form have been great around the House and there are some real characters. They have seemingly fitted into East life superbly. Michael Dolman and James Wootten have done some excellent work in getting the younger ones into the busy and strenuous routines that are needed here at Cranleigh. It has been great to see the support at all the House events this year, and I have loved the way everyone has given everything for the House even when a win has seemed unlikely. Exams are now firmly around the corner and so this Christmas is important for work as well as for a much needed rest after a draining term. The matrons have been exceptional as always, and we owe an awful lot to Jen and Sue for their amazing work behind the scenes, as much of what they do for us is too easily taken for granted. The House staff have kept their spirits high, and particular thanks must go to Mr Bird, Mr Forsdike, and Mr Lane for their efforts within the House. James Wootten, Michael Dolman and Will Yeeles have also been brilliant this term as prefects. I look forward to seeing everyone in January, and I hope you allhave a great Christmas and New Year!
House Challenge
Angus Cameron‐Blackie
After a quick round up of the House’s great ‘quizzers’, a team of Michael Dolman, Angus Cameron‐Blackie, Ed Russell and Joel Carne was assembled. We went into the first round with confidence, and had South as our opponents. The team performed to a decent standard, winning the first round without too much effort. Going into the second round we were looking to break recent tradition by actually making it to the final. The team was slightly changed for the second round, with Ollie Ward being substituted for Joel. We were relatively hopeful and thought we were in with a good chance against the Cubitt team. We managed to get within 70 points of our opponents in the second round, but ultimately their fingers turned out to be slightly faster than ours, which, apart from their impressive general knowledge, probably led to our eventual defeat. A greater breadth of historical and literary knowledge would be something for next year’s team to consider! A special mention goes to Ed Russell who performed particularly well, especially on the junior questions.
6th Form Football
George Black
Sixth form football is seen as a friendly ‘kick about’ after prep; however it is an entirely different event when the House shirt comes out! Our campaign was difficult; however our desire to win was undeniably the greatest out of the Houses. Our first match was against North, which was a challenging match where an extremely physical North side bossed us off the ball and the match ended 2‐0. Our second encounter was against a strong Loveday side. We kept the ball well and took advantage of the goal‐scoring opportunities given to us. On the 21st November we entered the final round against Cubitt. We knew this would be a very tough game as Cubitt were favourites to win having beaten North and drawn with Loveday. The game ended 1‐1 and Cubitt were crowned champions.
