Senior Basketball Report

House Captains Award

Having never lost a house basketball match in our time at the school, the 6th form team were going into the tournament with confidence looking to continue this record. We had a fairly strong squad consisting of many players in the school 1st team, and came up against a less experienced North side. We raced to a commanding early lead and didn’t look back. Leading 17-0 at half time we could have eased off and become complacent but this wasn’t the case as we continued to pile on the points, and didn’t concede a basket throughout the entire game winning by over 30 points in the end. This win put us in the final against a much stronger East team, in all senses of the word! The match started off more like a rugby game with hard fouls coming in left, right and centre, which is impressive considering basketball, is a non-contact sport.

However we put aside the pressure and managed to open up a significant gap at half time. After the interval East started to gain a bit of momentum, but we soon regained our composure and when on to win fairly comfortably conceding only one point in the whole event.

So the house is indeed now empty and in many ways it becomes something of a shell as it is, of course, the people in it that make Loveday what it is. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy Christmas and a peaceful new year and I look forward to seeing you all in January.

Housemasters Comments The last remnants of snow lie on the ground and for the first time in fourteen weeks the house is quiet. What an amazing time my first term as Housemaster of Loveday has been: I can honestly say that Claire and I have loved every minute of it though I must say am ready for a bit of rest and I think Claire is looking forward to seeing me for more than five minute snapshots at a time.

It has been a very successful term with the house collecting a substantial amount of bullion in today’s end of term assembly. Amongst our many successes was victory in the Senior House Public Speaking competition (as described later in this newsletter) which means that the team of George Lee, Charlie Humberstone and Fraser Shearer now go on to represent Cranleigh at the National competition later next year. When they have won that I look forward to us all travelling as UK champions to Lithuania for the Europeans…Loveday in Europe!

Congratulations to Chris Lehrter (Engineering) and Zac Baynham-Herd (Natural Sciences) on gaining Cambridge University interviews towards the end of term and we will be keeping our collective fingers crossed for them as they receive the news of success or failure later in the holidays.

Congratulations are also due to Henry Taylor for winning a place in the South West Division U18 rugby squad, particularly given that he is a year young. In January he will play in the divisional festival which is in effect an England trial.

This newsletter summarises many of the house events and activities of the term but what is does not show is the everyday things that go on within the Loveday boarding community that make it so special. These range from Sixth Formers happily playing in the matron’s rooms with our now five month old son George (anything to get out of doing an essay); to just about everybody in the house turning out on a dark and cold November evening to support the Junior House Fives team; through to regularly seeing the Fourth Form hustle the Sixth Form on the pool table. I am pleased to say that Loveday continues to be a happy and supportive place and long may this be so.

House Performance-Dance We came into the night feeling fairly strong and confident. We had some superb dancers including our break dancers Tom Cooper and Orlando Taylor. 6th Formers had warned us about the atmosphere but it was still a huge surprise when we heard the brilliant Loveday support. The giant roar which met the end of our performance meant we had pulled it off, with our best performance of the routine ever, giving us a great chance of winning. Unfortunately the judge’s preferred the simpler North routine, much to the surprise of many students. We were all devastated at the result; however we all had a great time and a lot of fun.

House Performance- Partsong Once again Loveday and West formed a great partnership to put on a top rate performance in the House Part -song. In true Loveday style I was amazed by the turn out we had on the first few rehearsal and spirits were running high, with massive amounts of work being put in by many individuals making the experience enjoyable. On the night I think we performed well: despite the result, I think it was obvious from the audience which house had the best evening. I owe a big thank you to all the soloists and everyone who gave up their time to help. The singers should be hugely proud of themselves and happy that no one embarrassed themselves on stage.

Junior Public Speaking In this years Junior House Public Speaking Competition, the Loveday team consisted of Xavier Iafrate, Eddie Mitchell, and Kusiva Ndewere. We presented on the Pope’s visit to Britain, which was a popular topic of debate within the house at the time.

The evening was good experience for all of us, preparing us well for representing the house again in future years. Unfortunately we weren’t to pull off the victory but thanks to all who took part and helped writing the speeches.

Senior Public Speaking This was an evening in which 3 members of our community raised themselves into Loveday legend. Charlie Humberstone, George Lee, and Fraser Shearer delivered a hair-raising insight into “Why a Mosque should be built at Ground Zero.” This was Loveday’s first ever victory in the competition, and the way in which our team swept aside the arrogant, specious presentations of East and Cubitt was as stunning as it was surprising. The victory was inspired by George’s performance, who now in his 3rd year of competition landed the ‘best speaker’ of the evening award, although he was ably supported by Humberstone’s rhetoric and Shearer’s enthusiasm and dramatic delivery. Many thanks to SAAB for his advice and the brilliant support (unsurprising, given this took place during prep!)

House Challenge Report With the loss of our general knowledge specialist last year, the Loveday House Challenge team had a large task living up to our achievements in this competition in previous years. Nevertheless, we had a strong team of intellectuals consisting of Will Wright, Christian Round, Ed Stokes and Chris Lehrter. Having won last year, we got a bye in the first round, and went straight up against a very strong North side that had just demolished South, and were favourites to win. Despite a valiant effort from all members of the team, and the fact that we managed to gain more points than either teams in the first contest of the day, we were still just about beaten by North. A good effort from the team,

and hopefully something that we can build on next year.

Senior House Fives

This meant we played a weak North side in the third/ forth playoff. We demolished them, winning all 5 matches in 20 minutes and only lost 10 points, with Ollie Davies, Ali Young, Luke Hall, Felix IrwinBrown and Ben Steffens all winning.

The butterflies were still sinking in; suddenly the gun went and everyone darted off.

Daniel Khalupsky from Loveday started strongly and quickly moved to first, followed closely by James Harris and Alex Hill. As the race went on Loveday kept going, still jostling for spaces at the front. It was a brave effort from the whole of the 4th form. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and it was a great afternoon. Loveday came second to Cubitt, with three top ten finishers; James Harris, Alex Hill and Bill Bathurst coming in the top three.

In the semi-final we played a tough East side. We came through the tie 2-1 win with James Cordy-Redden and Sanjay Appan winning with ease. Our third pair lost and it was down to the first pair of Ollie Davies and Luke Hall who enjoyed a relatively straight forward win. This put us through to the final against the favourites Cubitt. Again we didn’t succeed in the third pair although Bradley Scriven and Felix Irwin-Brown put in a valiant effort. Our first pair competed in a game of the highest calibre against the schools number one pair but unfortunately came out on the losing side 21-19. James and Sanjay again performed exquisitely, still fighting even though we had lost the tie, but were unable to snatch a victory from an East team with great depth. We therefore came second, and on another day it could have been.

In the semi-final we came up against a very strong Cubitt side. Unfortunately we lost the match however all five players put in a superb effort, and special mention must go to Charlie Gilbert for managing to win his match. Disappointingly this meant that we did not make the final, but we still had the task of beating North in the 3rd/4th play-off; which we managed 3-2 with Angus Barrett, Charlie Gilbert and Ollie Osbourne winning their matches. Although Will Jay and Angus Young did not manage to achieve the same fete, we had won enough matches to win the tie. Thanks to everyone who played.

The UV basketball went superbly as it has done in previous years. First match: North. We dominated this game with Tom Farrelly scoring a countless number of baskets. They tried to use their physical strength against us but Nick Kelly showed them who was boss, and with the skill and agility of Otto West, Jack Scriven and Jonny Pike we sailed into victory. Next up in the final: East. This was a very tense game and it went into extra time at 4 baskets each (8-8) scored by Fraser Shearer, Ed Roberts and Ali Hills. There were a few hit and misses but Loveday pulled through and won finishing with a golden hoop from Will Nicholls to make Loveday victorious. Thanks to KK for stepping up from the year below and everyone else who participated. Good job lads another victory for Loveday!

4th Form Cross-Country

In the semi-final we played a fairly weak North side.

The first pair, Milo Maxton and Will Jay took on two fourth formers in a very easy match, that was won 21 – 7. However, the last two pairs had much harder matches to play. We won one of these by 21 – 15, thanks to an inexperienced yet effective pair of Cameron Henderson and Ollie Osborne who were both very agile on and off the step: we lost the other 21 – 11, but it was a brilliant effort from the two forth formers of Angus Barrett and Charlie Gilbert who had been playing for no longer than 2 weeks. This put us through to the final against a very strong East side that had several players playing a high level of Fives.

However, a strong Will Jay and a very quick Ollie Osborne managed to narrowly lose 21 – 15 against the first pair after coming back from 2–10 down. Sadly pair 2 and 3 had little chance against east and both lost 21 – 9, but still put in enormous amounts of effort.

Senior Squash In the semi-final we played an evenly matched East side and always knew that it would be a tough game.

After some epic matches we unfortunately lost the tie 3-2, losing the three games all in the deciding set, with

4th Form Basketball In the semi-final we came up against North. In this game we enjoyed a particularly easy win. Our shooting was the best part of our game as hoop after hoop kept being sunk. Bill Bathhurst played particularly well and Tom Cooper showed his skill. This convincing win put us through to the final against a strong Cubitt side that had one dominant player.

In the end we were relatively convincingly beaten but everyone put in a fantastic effort and enjoyed the event.
