NORTH HOUSE – Summer2011 -

The summer term is always one which is cherished and loathed in equal measure by the students. With longer evenings and more opportunities to run around and enjoy the facilities they are much happier but then the exams hit and the selfdiscipline is stretched to the limit as they battle between work and play. In the main the House got down to work the overall ethos and approach was impressive.

This was helped by the leadership of the U6th who worked better than any year group I can remember. This was a not a complete surprise because they have offered strong leadership throughout the year and as role models they have set the tone. We will miss them and hope they come and visit.

NORTH HOUSE – Summer 2011

Junior House Croquet The first match was against West and Ollie Taylor and Rory Kennedy played and won by 3 hoops. The 2nd North pair consisted of Charlie Cutting and Callum Kent who had a much more exciting match that ended when time was called and they beat Loveday by two pegs.

The finals... The first match was played against Cubitt, the weather was awful, the umbrellas were out and Mr. Hardee made the brave decision to play on through the rain.

Perhaps it was the weather or the fact that Rory Kennedy was missing from the team and Mylo Boyd boldly took accepted the challenge of filling Rory Kennedy’s boots but Ollie Taylor and Mylo Boyd were beaten by two hoops.

So Charlie Cutting and Callum Kent had to win by at least 3 hoops for North to win but unfortunately they drew leaving North as the runners up.

NORTH HOUSE – Summer 2011 Senior House Croquet We stepped out without the weight of much expectation on our shoulders. The team had been compiled at the last minute and consisted of a man who hadn’t attended a sports practice for two terms - Jamie Pitt. It would be fair to say the situation looked bleak. The first pair of Will Jeanes and Jamie Pitt triumphantly arrived twenty minutes late, much to the horror of FTH. However, a dark horse was about to rise out of the grey mist encircling the North camp. It emerged that Jamie Pitt knew the rules and tactics of Croquet better than RHGJ knows the classical world. The first pair of Jeanes and Pitt simply blew away West’s first pair. Pitt’s constant challenging of the rules angered onlookers immersed in the spirit of the game, but ultimately helped swing the match in North’s favour. Yet Pitt’s finest hour was still to come. The second pair of Harry Dear and Will Heath also arrived late, they were both newcomers to the game, but fortunately for them Pitt resisted the temptation of taking an unscheduled break to take on a managerial role. Loveday’s pair was very strong and on paper it should have been no contest. After a poor start at the first peg, Heath and Dear, under the expert guidance of Pitt fought back to take a surprise lead. Not even FTH could have predicted the outcome at the half way stage of this most epic of contests.

Unfortunately for the North faithful Loveday began to sneak away, and they eventually won by a whisker. This meant that North didn’t quite qualify for the final. However, North stole the show with their attractive style of Croquet and took the moral victory. If there is a lesson that can be learned from this, it is that

Croquet is most certainly a sport not to be underestimated. (No picture is available of this event…and the award for fiction in a sporting context goes to…)

NORTH HOUSE – Summer 2011 House Athletics House athletics this year was a rollercoaster of emotions. With results ranging from first to last in a variety of different events, North stuck together through the highs and lows. It was a great House event, in which everybody enjoyed themselves and some impressive performances were achieved, such as George Griffiths winning the senior boys 100m after having smoked for the last 5 years and AJ Coates won the 4th form ‘Blue Riband’ event. Moreover, Ben Roberts and Ben Gasson won the senior and junior Shot Put over some larger competition. This is just a selection of the impressive results achieved that afternoon, and overall North came third for the second year running.

NORTH HOUSE – Summer 2011 House Climbing No one was really sure who was going to win the inaugural Hose Climbing trophy.

However, as the date got closer, it became clear that Loveday and North were the clear favourites. Climbing for North were Robbie Matthews and Chris Tolley. The competition is point based, getting up a climb 1st time earns you ten points 2nd 7 points and 3rd 3 points and an additional 1 point for anything after that.

After 3 hours of climbing, with both members of North climbing extremely well, the final scores were added up.

Robbie Matthews scored 113 coming 5th and Chris Tolley scored 178 coming 2nd, this gave north an overall score of 291 coming 1st overall.

Senior House Tennis Captained admirably by Angus Peters, the North team went out with a sense of hope onto the bottom courts. The 1st pair (Angus Peters and Gio de Nardi) had some great matches with a set of good results; however the rest of the team had less success, with Marcus Kim and Jonny Paddle in 2nd pair, with Jon Hobbs and

Josh Milton bringing up the rear. In the end, the result was not representative of the way the team played and the effort that was put into the day. Overall, it was a great day in the sun, and an enjoyable experience for all involved.

NORTH HOUSE – Summer 2011 Pair 3: Charlie Cutting and Kevin Park: Charlie and Kevin made a good start but had some dodgy calls go against them.

They eventually lost 4-2. The two boys making a big change around took East down, winning 4-2. There last match against Cubitt, the two boys had a poor start and were 2-0 down and then switched gears, Charlie Cutting pulled off a incredible slice return shot down the line and Kevin made some solid backhands and forehands. In the end they pulled it back and won 4-2.

Junior House Tennis Before we started the day, we had the best team on paper out of all the houses.

The tennis team was psyched and ready to destroy all the other houses. The tennis team started their campaign against Loveday: Pair 1: Max O’Brien and Ben Wells: We got off to a flying start against Loveday pair 1 and we broke serve from the first game and then took the match 4-2. Our second match was against East where we got off to another cracking start and comfortably won 4-2 in the end. Our final match was against Cubitt where we got off 2 an incredible start where we were 40 up and in the end won 5-1 after a gutsy performance.

Pair 2: Christian Pedder and Sam Scutt: Christian and Sam made a slow start to their first game against Loveday where they could not pull many games back and they lost 5-1 in the end. They came up against a weaker East opposition which they dominated 6-0. Sensational!

In their final game against Cubitt they also made a really impressive performance, winning 4-2.

Pair 4: Jerome Greeno and Will Palmer: They got off to a great start against their first opponent Loveday and dominated the whole game, winning 5-1. In their second match against East, they won 4-2 and in their final game they played Cubitt and put in another very dedicated performance, winning 4-2.

Overall we won by 7 games!!!!!!!!

NORTH HOUSE – Summer 2011 House Swimming Having won this event for the past two years the North team was very determined to retain the trophy for a third year in a row. However, Loveday and East were the clear favourites going in, given that they had the majority of the school swimming team.

With some star performers, such as Charlie Cutting and Sam McCagherty, not forgetting Owen Quant, (who was pipped to the line in the 50 meter breast stroke, despite having had no training leading up to the race) North were in 2nd place leading into the relay races, just behind Loveday.

The North team had a lot of confidence going into the relays due to the amazing North support and camaraderie. All three age groups did extremely well in the events especially the intermediates who won both the medley and the freestyle relay. The squadron relay was definitely the highlight of the event. With two students from each year competing in the race, the success of the relay relied heavily upon every individual. With a strong squad and good leadership from Sam, North cruised to victory to win House Swimming for a third year in a row.

After the result was announced there were definitely some memorable scenes as everyone jumped into the pool, Hugh Jolly leading the celebration with a flying kick into lane two.

It was a great event and we are all hoping we can do the same again next year!!

NORTH HOUSE – Summer 2011 Junior House Golf The North House junior golf team consisted of Will Tebbet, Max Rahder, Jack Horsey, Rory Subba Row and Jamie Harrison. In the semi- final we met Cubitt.

Jamie won the first match 3 and 2; Will won in a close 2-1 match; Max won on the very last hole 1 up; this gave us the overall win against Cubitt. However, Jack also won his game 1 up, but unfortunately Rory lost his 8 down, making the overall score 4-1 to North.

In the final we faced Loveday. The team sheets seemed to show the teams were very even, but the North team received a devastating blow with news of an injury to Rory Subba Row. In the face of adversity, the North team showed outstanding resiliency, and Rory Kennedy stepped into the team without a moment’s hesitation. Jamie won the first game 2 up, and then Will clung on to his lead to finish 2 up. However, Loveday’s tail end was strong and Max lost 4 down, with Rory also losing his match. This made the scores even going in to the last game.

With a tremendous amount of serendipity, Loveday won the last game, Jack unfortunately losing the game 2 down; this made the final score 3-2 to Loveday.

At 6.30am on Sunday 26th June, the first 2 games of North’s Charity 24 hour football tournament kicked off on Pickup. Early victories for Ben Roberts’ Butterflies and Tom Subba Row’s Superheroes set them on their way. The group stages involved all 8 teams playing each other in a round-robin system which would provide the seedings for the quarter final stage.

Subba’s Superheroes topped the table on goal difference over Will Jeanes’ Jesters with George Colgan’s Crocodiles in third place. Mrs Osborne kindly paid for an ice cream van to come for an hour which was welcome relief in the boiling hot sunshine. The final, played at around 6pm, was between the Superheroes and Max Rothman’s Marmots, expertly refereed by Will Jeanes with Harry Ricks and John Richman on the microphone. A 2-0 victory for the Superheroes allowed them to secure the highly sought after prize.

Many thanks must go to the Matrons for all they did throughout the day – unfortunately the suncream came too late for some! Thanks must also be given for Mr Burnett, Mr Witcombe and Mr Jackson for helping organise the day and the barbecue and also for Will Greenhalgh who ensured the day’s schedule ran smoothly. Finally, thanks must be given for the parents who provided such delicious cakes.

NORTH HOUSE – Summer 2011 Farewells

Dear North Parents,

Sandi McConnell-Wood

Thank you so very much for the wonderful 'Fatboy' hammock and chair in my favourite colour (turquoise). I adore them and they have been well and truly christened...lazing in the afternoon sunshine and snuggled under a blanket in the evening with a glass of red wine - for medicinal purposes only! I have thoroughly enjoyed being part of North, getting to know your sons and enjoying their company and I am only sorry that that time has been cut short. I am glad though to be around on campus to be able to watch them, from a distance, grow into fine young men.

Sandi joined North in January 2010 as Matron with her ever faithful and happy cocker spaniel Indy. Unfortunately, ill health meant she had to resign at the start of the summer term. She was a fantastic matron and the boys will miss her and Indy. The affection with which she was held was apparent with the generosity of parents which enabled the House to buy her a ‘Fatboy’ hammock and beanbag. Sandi has written the following:

NORTH HOUSE – Summer 2011 Farewells: James Brookes JJB, a former Cranleigh pupil himself, has only been in North for 6 months but he has made a significant impact with his sense of humour and with the care and attention he has brought to his tutees.

Sadly James, in his new role as Librarian, will not be a tutor in any of the houses next year but we wish him well in his new post.

The 4th Form

We wish FTH all the very best as he moves to Jeju College in South Korea. He has been an outstanding tutor in North for the past 4 years and many a student has benefitted from his care and attention to detail. His legacy in the House and the wider School Community has been seen in the area of academic competitions and it is entirely appropriate that his last act in the school is to take two students (including Paddy Wilson UVN) to the Karl Popper World Debating Championships.
