During this past quarter, the Operation TBI Freedom (OTF) team had the distinct honor of welcoming someone who has quietly stood behind our mission since the very beginning—Mr. Dob Bennett. While he may shy away from recognition, Dob is truly OTF’s unsung hero.

For the past 17 years, Dob has generously supported Operation TBI Freedom with unwavering dedication. His belief in our mission and his compassion for the service members and veterans we serve have been a steady source of strength through every chapter of our journey. From the early days of building this program to the present, Dob’s kindness, humility, and quiet leadership have helped shape OTF into what it is today.

During his visit, Dob spent time with the team, asked thoughtful questions, and reminded us—once again—why we do this work. As always, he was more focused on the mission than on any credit, choosing instead to express his gratitude to us for the work we’re doing. That humility is exactly what makes Dob so remarkable.

We simply cannot thank Dob enough for the incredible support he has shown over the years. His care and compassion for those living with traumatic brain injury, many of whom feel unseen or unheard, mirror the very values at the heart of Operation TBI Freedom.

Dob, thank you for being a guiding light, a loyal supporter, and a true friend to OTF. Your legacy lives in every life we touch, and we are honored to have

you in our corner.

Past Quarter's Highlights

Partnering for Brain Health: Operation TBI Freedom at the Fort Carson Intrepid Spirit Center

This past quarter, Operation TBI Freedom (OTF) had the privilege of joining our partners at the Fort Carson Intrepid Spirit Center (ISC) for their Open House on March 21, 2025, in support of Brain Injury Awareness Month. The event was a powerful reminder of the incredible work happening right here in our own backyard to address the often invisible wounds of traumatic brain injury (TBI).

The ISC, a state-of-the-art treatment facility and a proud part of the Defense Intrepid Network, is dedicated to assessing and caring for concussions and other brain injuries. Their mission is clear: provide comprehensive care to service members, veterans, and their families, and help injured warriors return to duty whenever possible.

For the OTF team, the Open House was more than just an outreach opportunity—it was a reaffirmation of the strong partnerships we are fortunate to have with our colleagues at the ISC. We are proud to walk alongside them in serving those living with TBI and look forward to continued collaboration in the months and years ahead. Together, we’re not just raising awareness—we’re strengthening the support network for

our nation’s heroes and their families.

Empowering Connections: Operation TBI Freedom Launches Inaugural Women’s Peer Support Group

Women’s Peer Support Group: Every 3rd Friday of each month. For more on Operation TBI Freedoms Women’s Peer Support Group, see the OTF Events Tab at: OTF Events - Craig Hospital

Operation TBI Freedom is proud to announce the launch of our inaugural Women’s Peer Support Group, led by Military Support Specialist Sarah Lowrey. This group was created to provide a safe, supportive space for women veterans living with TBI to connect, share their experiences, and uplift one another.

Women veterans often navigate unique challenges tied to their service—challenges that can be overlooked or misunderstood in more generalized support settings. By fostering peer connection through shared identity and experience, this group offers validation, strength, and community. It’s a space where authentic voices are heard, resilience is celebrated, and healing is shared.

Sarah’s dedication and compassion have been instrumental in bringing this group to life, and we are thrilled to see the response from the amazing women who have stepped forward to participate. Their courage, insight, and camaraderie are already shaping this group into something special.

Operation TBI Freedom is excited to see how this initiative evolves and what positive outcomes come from empowering our women veterans through peer support. We believe this is just the

beginning of something impactful—and we’re here for every step of the journey.

TBI Education

The Power of Education in the Recovery Process

TBI Education Workshops: Every 2nd Thursday of each month. See OTF Events tab at: OTF Events - Craig Hospital

TBI education plays a vital role in the recovery journey. It equips survivors and their loved ones with the tools to recognize symptoms, access appropriate care, and build a supportive environment for healing. By bridging the gap between clinical professionals and the broader community, TBI education promotes a well-rounded, collaborative path to recovery.

At Operation TBI Freedom, we believe knowledge is empowering, and often the first step toward meaningful change. Understanding the complexities of traumatic brain injury can help ease fear and uncertainty, while providing a sense of control and direction for those affected.

Thanks to the commitment of Military Support Specialist Tim Patrick, we’ve united a team of knowledgeable instructors from Craig Hospital and our local community. These dedicated educators bring not only clinical expertise, but also compassion and experience to every session. Through their guidance, participants gain essential insights into the causes, symptoms, and longterm impacts of TBI.

This program is more than just information—it's about building confidence, fostering resilience, and strengthening support networks. Whether you're a survivor, a caregiver, or a concerned loved one, our goal is to ensure you’re equipped with the resources and understanding needed to navigate this journey together.

TBI Peer Support Groups

Finding Strength Together: The Importance of TBI Peer Support Groups

TBI peer support group: Every 4th Thursday of each month. See the OTF Events tab at: OTF Events - Craig Hospital

For many veterans and service members living with traumatic brain injury (TBI), the path to recovery can feel overwhelming and isolating. That’s why peer support groups are such a vital part of what we offer at Operation TBI Freedom. These groups create a space where individuals can connect with others who understand the unique challenges of living with a TBI—because they’ve lived it too.

Peer support offers more than emotional relief. It fosters a sense of belonging, builds confidence, and helps participants develop strategies for navigating everyday life. Sharing experiences in a supportive environment reduces stigma, encourages open communication, and strengthens the healing process for everyone involved.

Military Support Specialist John Lenz has been instrumental in facilitating these groups and helping ensure they remain welcoming and consistent. His efforts help create a space where participants feel heard, valued, and connected.

We’re proud to see these peer support groups grow into trusted circles of encouragement and resilience.

Operation TBI Freedom News/Updates (Q2 FY-25)

As always, our goal is to walk alongside our veterans and service members—together, not alone.

Recreational Outings

Healing Through Connection: The Impact of Recreational Outings

Outdoor/Indoor Recreational Activities: Multiple activities are available for our veterans, service members, and their families—see OTF Events tab at https://craighospital.org/operation-tbi-freedom/otfevents

At Operation TBI Freedom, we know that traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are not just medical conditions—they're life-altering experiences that affect how individuals connect with the world around them. That’s why our recreational outings are so

important. These outings serve as powerful, real-world opportunities for healing, grounded in the belief that TBI and PTSD are medical problems with social solutions.

Led with care and compassion by Military Support Specialist Renee Miller, these outings are intentionally designed to foster connection, reduce isolation, and promote a sense of purpose and community. Whether it’s a fishing trip, an art class, or an outdoor adventure, each outing encourages veterans and service members to engage in meaningful activity alongside others who understand their journey.

Social reintegration is a critical piece of recovery. When participants step outside clinical settings and into shared experiences, they often rediscover strengths, rebuild confidence, and begin to reimagine what life can look like after injury.

Renee’s thoughtful coordination ensures that these events are not just well-organized but also trauma-informed and inclusive, providing a safe space for growth and camaraderie. The result? A stronger, more connected community—one outing at a time!
