For the third year running the Crafts Council of Ireland’s National Craft Gallery attended
is, at times, a very loud show, yet it still manages to make a strong statement about the creativity and beauty of Irish craft.
SOFA (Sculptural Object Functional Art) in Chicago. For contemporary Irish craft in general it has been a huge success, with influential gallerists, collectors and critics being introduced to high-end Irish craft and the artists who created it. Participation at SOFA has benefits on many levels: establishing and deepening linkages with galleries, collectors, craftspeople, educationalists and potential consumers for Irish craft and visitors to Ireland. The Crafts Council of Ireland stand has made an impact at SOFA, with visitors returning from previous years specifically to check out the Irish booth. For this third outing at SOFA, building on its experience, we took a different approach and added a space in the Resource area as well as the large booth in the main body of the show. This provided information on the Crafts Council of Ireland and its services and helped to promote Ireland as a destination for American collectors and craft enthusiasts. This experience for the National Craft Gallery and the Crafts Council of Ireland will feed back into its programmes for clients in product development and enterprise development, and helps to achieve our ambition to make Irish craft renowned and sought-after all over the world.
