From Seed to Meal By Jennifer Walton

Agriculture, also known as farming, is the preparing of animals, plants and other life forms for food, drugs, fuel and other products. It is another word for gardening. Food of course is the source of nutrients that provide living things with the fuel needed for energy and growth. Natural Resources are things that occur in nature that can help to create wealth like oil, coal, water and land. Natural Resources are things not made by humans. Government is the system by which a state or community is ran or directed. Public Administration is the management and carrying out of the rules set forth by the government. Human Services is a program or place for meeting basic human needs like health and well-being for a society or a group like the poor, sick and elderly.

6

Success Tomorrow Starts TODAY!

Health Science is a part of science or an organized body of knowledge that has been gathered over a period of time which deals with the health of humans and animals.

How in the world do these things fit together? Here is an example. Planting a seed, you put it into the ground, water it, care for it and eventually it grows into a plant (Agriculture). It takes natural resources like land and water to nurture the seed and develop it. Depending on what kind of seed it is, such as a carrot, it becomes something you can eat (Food). The government determines the chemicals that can be used in the soil (land) and if you are allowed to spray chemicals on the plants (carrots) to keep bugs off. Public administrators would be hired to make sure that only safe chemicals are being used and to monitor any other policies for growing food and making sure it is safe to eat. Health science develops the chemicals and tests the plants, as well as helping to care for anyone who has eaten something that is not safe. Human Services are people who work to ensure that all people have what they need. In our example, they would be the ones who look out for those people who need good, healthy food but may not be able to afford it or who may need other resources to meet their basic needs. Basic needs are food, clothing and shelter. So as you see, all these industries work together to turn a seed into a carrot, and a carrot into a healthy snack that’s safe on your table and those who may be less fortunate, too. THE TO BECOMING

Dr. Swapnil Vaidya

HEALTH SCIENCE

The Road to Becoming a Doctor By Loureva Slade

Dr. Swapnil Vaidya, MD PhD, owner of Advanced Allergy and Asthma Association in Fort Worth, TX, is an allergy immunology physician (or allergist). As an allergist, Dr. Vaidya sees anywhere from 15-20 patients each day, administers tests to determine what patients are allergic to (i.e. pollens, animals, dust, etc.), and develops treatment/management plans to bring allergies or asthma under control. Dr. Vaidya grew up in India and was always interested in biology and medicine. Encouraged by his high school biology teacher and supported by his parents, he decided to pursue a career in medicine. He attended medical school at Government Medical College Nagpur (in India) before coming to the United States and completing his residency in Internal Medicine at University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. During his residency, Dr. Vaidya sometimes had to work 30-hour shifts, but said the time went by fast because he enjoyed what he did. The hardest part about his residency was that Internal Medicine is a general field that deals with different types of diseases like cancer. It was very emotional for him to diagnose patients with terminal illnesses. After his residency, Dr. Vaidya decided to get a doctorate degree from University of North Texas (UNT) because he liked the

medical research being done there. A career as an allergist is quite rewarding and offers a wide salary range (up to $150,000 per year), but requires tenacity, determination, good grades and good performance on the MCAT Exam. Students can expect to spend 4 years in an undergraduate program, 4 years in an MD program, 3 years in an Internal Medicine or Pediatrics residency, and an additional 2-3 years in an allergy training program specializing in conditions of the human immune system. Dr. Vaidya suggests that while students interested in medicine should join science clubs, diverse interests and hobbies are helpful as well. For example, some medical schools offer classes in art because having a visual appreciation for what’s in a painting translates into the ability to determine the causes of patients’ symptoms after observing, examining and talking with them. Dr. Vaidya has enjoyed every aspect of his career path and wouldn’t change a thing. Caring about people and having a sincere desire to help those who are suffering are what drive Dr. Vaidya. His most rewarding moments are when patients call him to say they are feeling so much better because of his care.

GOVERNMENT AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION

Many Paths Lead to Success BY MARTHA DELLER

Susan Alanis changed directions several times before choosing a path that led to her current career as Fort Worth assistant city manager. She planned to be a doctor when she started at Texas State University but switched to Pre-law after enjoying political science more than science. By graduation, she had decided to pursue a master’s degree in social work while working as a state case worker with teen mothers. Alanis changed directions again after having her first child. Reasoning that she could help more people as a manager than as a social worker, she joined the University of Texas at Arlington’s public administration program. Set on becoming a city manager one day, Alanis sought opportunities to gain experience in a number of positions over 17 years. She worked in the planning and development department, where she was involved in drafting the highly controversial gas drilling ordinance in 2007-2009. “There were hundreds of people at every council meeting,” she recalled. The varied experience paid off three years ago, when Dale Fissler retired as city manager. Current city manager, Tom Higgins was promoted, leaving a vacancy for his assistant city manager job. Alanis was appointed to that job. She oversees seven departments including personnel, parks, financial management, IT and communication.

Susan Alanis

Alanis envisions advancing to the top city management job _ in Fort Worth or elsewhere. “The city manager’s office serves as a conduit between the [city] council and the departments. We connect the dots,” she said. Public administration isn’t the only route to a government career so Alanis suggests pursuing the college major that most interests each individual. “One of our assistant city managers has a master’s degree in planning,” she said. “Other people have engineering degrees. And we have lots of lawyers. There are a lot of paths.”

HEALTH SCIENCE

A Holistic Approach to Healthy Living By Lavina Randle

Discovering that patients can obtain health and wellness without prescription medicine, Dr. Yinka Adetola, Doctor of Chiropractic, was lead to Palmer College of Chiropractic. Palmer College is considered the Harvard of chiropractic schools. Chiropractic medicine is a holistic practice of treating disorders of the body, especially those of the bones, muscles, and joints, by manipulating the vertebrae of the spine.

14

Born in Nigeria, Dr. Adetola’s family moved when she was a child.

HEALTH SCIENCE

It was her desire to become a neurosurgeon. However, after participating in a medical exploratory program at Howard University shadowing neurosurgeons, she discovered it was not a good fit for her. Unfortunately, she witnessed the death of a patient three days after successfully undergoing brain surgery, and was devastated. That incident led Dr. Adetola to talk with her pastor, who Dr. Yinka Adetola shared his experience being treated by a chiropractor for diabetes management. Prior to that conversation, Dr. Adetola had never heard of chiropractic medicine. In order to learn more, she was introduced to the chiropractor who later became her mentor. She acknowledges there are not many organizations, clubs or associations that focus on introducing curious minds to chiropractic medicine. However, she encourages aspiring Chiropractors to connect with a good mentor. Though the paperwork can be cumbersome, an initial visit with Dr. Adetola includes obtaining a detailed account of health issues and concerns the patient is experiencing. Once the issues are discussed, x-rays and MRI’s may be taken. She reviews the data and provides a diagnosis. Dr. Adetola works with her patients to develop an effective treatment plan which usually involves spinal manipulation and daily stretching. Having a passion for helping people, Dr. Adetola is dedicated to improving the health of her patients. She has gained great success while managing her staff of five as owner of North Hills Chiropractic Health Center in Ft. Worth, TX. She constantly reminds them the first phase of health and wellness is customer service and ensures her patients are comfortable with her and the staff before treating them. In her experience, Dr. Adetola says a first year chiropractor can expect to see earnings anywhere from $60,000 to $70,000 a year. An established chiropractor operating several practices can make millions. Dr. Adetola attributes her success to her faith and the strong support of her family.

What’s In CPTIME

FOR YOU!

What is

?

CPTIME stands for Career Planning TIME. TIME Stands for Talent, Interests, Motivation and Education which are four key areas to focus on for success. The stories will talk about role models who are successful in their careers and tell how they became successful. Some people will be successful at a high level, while others will be successful within their jobs, even though they are not at the top. They may become more successful in the future, but success happens at all levels – especially if you do a good job. Their stories will talk about what tasks they perform at work, what level of education they have and what has led to their success thus far. It will be available every other month printed as a magazine and online at www.cptime.net.

16

Success Tomorrow Starts TODAY!

What else is in ?

There are helpful columns in every edition that we call “TIMEless Moments”. Those columns are: * NOB4UGO(Know Before You Go) College and Career Tips, * Just Enough So U Succeed (inspiration and encouragement), * Clues U Can Use (a little something to learn or think about), * Contest Corner (chances to win prizes and recognition) and * Be Your Own Boss (business ownership). Advertisers and sponsors are able to highlight their products and services which may be of interest to you. Go into their businesses and see what they have to offer as a way to “thank” them for this career information. If you know of a business that provides a product or service you like or use, please send the name to publisher@ cptime.net.

What’s In CPTIME

FOR YOU!

Who are the role models?

How can you talk to the role models?

These are everyday people. They have faced similar circumstances as you. Some may not have had the best grades. Some may not have had a clue what career they wanted, but it will tell you how they figured it out. Some may not have completed college, while others may have more than one college degree. Some may have started in one career and changed their mind, because they didn’t have anyone to help them figure out the best career path at an early age. These are people who may or may not live in your area. These role models may have grown up with a single mom, or a mom and a dad at home. They have all types of backgrounds. Some may even have military experience. There are a variety of people for you to see and talk to about their careers, so if you’re interested in their career or know a friend, brother, sister or cousin who might be, share their stories in your neighborhood, your church, your school or your after school programs and outside activities (like dance, sports, karate, etc.).

As mentioned, the CPTIME Team will make it possible for you to talk to the role models. If you are not sure if you would like their career, ask them questions. If you KNOW FOR SURE you like their career, find out more information that will help you prepare. Every other month, the role models in the magazine will talk to you. All you have to do is log on to www.cptime.net and sign up. Once you do, the call or web information will be sent to you and when the date comes, you’ll call or log on and they will be there to answer your questions. Even better, the CPTIME Team will remind you of upcoming dates so you don’t miss out if you forget. Don’t be shy! There is nothing to be afraid of because no one can see you, but get your parents’ permission before you log on! We encourage parents to be present with you, if possible.

Follow Dad’s Footsteps…Or Does Mother Know Best? BY MARTHA DELLER

Even in urban Houston, Logan LeCompte’s parents promoted a healthy lifestyle, serving veggie chips for snacks, picking berries for fun and composting scraps to preserve the environment. But it took him a few years and a few jobs to settle on a career that merged his childhood hobbies and parental influences. He considered his parents’ employment _ his mother a teacher, his father a salesman _ and decided on sales. With a marketing degree from Louisiana State University, LeCompte tried sports marketing, telemarketing and running a Houston marketing agency for seven years before switching to teaching. Rejecting online college teaching as too impersonal, he moved to Fort Worth and became certified as an elementary school teacher where he thought he could make a bigger difference. LeCompte’s first teaching job at Burton Hill Elementary brought him in contact with Real School Gardens, a non-profit program that creates learning gardens and trains teachers to use the gardens to improve student academic achievement.

18

When Real School Gardens installed a garden at Burton Hill, LeCompte helped fifth graders create a puppet show to teach

younger students about outdoor safety and protecting themselves in severe weather. A School Gardens architect told LeCompte about an opening for an educator to train other teachers about the program. He was hired in July after a competitive application process. In December, LeCompte will earn his Master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Tarleton State University. That degree is not required for his new job but he believes Logan LeCompte it will help him fulfill the core values of a Real School Gardens education –including a healthy school community, health and nutrition instruction and healthy habits. He also is training to become a master gardener, an important part of the program’s mission. “First we design the garden, then we build the garden,” LeCompte said. “Then educators come in [to schools] to nurture teachers to make sure they feel comfortable and competent using the garden as an effective instructional tool. I really feel this is a movement in hands-on learning. I feel like Real School Gardens promotes careers from zoo keeper to plant pathologist. As important as gardening and teaching skills, LeCompte said, is passion. “We’re always looking for a creative mind, somebody who’s not afraid to try new things.”

Be Your Own Boss

The Little Teapot Daycare Center, Cynthia Banks, owner By ShaVonne Banks-Davis

Cynthia Banks, owner/director of The Little Teapot Daycare Center in Fort Worth, TX, is a licensed childcare professional with over 20 years of expertise. Childcare centers provide care and supervision for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and/or schoolage children all or part of the day. Read the interview with Ms. Banks below. Cynthia Banks

1.When did you gain interest in childcare and what motivated

you? I have always been great with kids! As a single mother of 3, I always planned fun activities with my children. A co-worker encouraged me to consider opening a daycare because I was good with kids. I took her compliment very seriously and enrolled in Tarrant County College. 2. What background and education do you have pertaining to your field? I have an associate’s degree in child development. Along the way I have achieved additional certifications: National Association for Family Childcare Accreditation Validator, Certified Childcare Trainer, Level 4 Master Provider, and CCMS Rising Star Provider. 22

Success Tomorrow Starts TODAY!

3. What was the deciding factor to open your own daycare?

HUMAN SERVICES

While pursuing my degree I worked at a daycare center for 2 years. I quickly noticed things I would do differently. I knew if I opened a daycare it would be filled with love and focused on the children’s needs and their parents. I desired the opportunity to put my ideas to work in my own company. 4. What do your days consist of? As the owner, I wear many hats. Outside of being the director, I can easily pick up the tasks of teacher, counselor or van driver. I do it all! 5. What difficulties have you experienced and how did you overcome? One of the hardest tasks is hiring and firing staff. In childcare, the staff has to be properly screened and trained. Another challenge is keeping enrollment up. I ensure we stay innovative with activities and curriculum. 6. What accomplishments have you experienced? A major accomplishment was transitioning from a home-based business to a center. Making that transition was the ultimate sign of growth and it was a very proud moment. It’s also heartwarming to see adults who grew up under my care now bringing their kids to the daycare. 7. What advice do you have for people interested in childcare? Any business you begin should be purpose-driven. Childcare is a profession and it has to begin with love; love for the children and for yourself. Being in the “kid business” means being for the kids, in every way, shape and form. Love the business and it will prosper.

Just Enough So U Succeed - A Time For Inspiration

By Jennifer Walton

There will come a time in your life when you will get weighed down with stuff. You will have schoolwork, chores, after school activities, plus the pressure of planning and having a vision for your future career and life. All of those things swirling around in your head can become heavy and make you want to crawl into a hole and hideout. I want to encourage you to take it one day at a time. It will get better. Prioritize. Make a to-do list of things you need to get done for the day. As you complete them, check them off your list. You will find as you begin to do so, your load will get lighter and the stress will begin to be released. Start with the most important task first - put it at the top of your list and work your way down. It will get better, just breathe. Ask for help whenever you can. You don’t have to carry the load by yourself. Making a list will help keep your thoughts organized and help you have a more productive day. Remember, whatever the day may bring, you are equipped to get through it. Breathe.

HUMAN SERVICES

Willing to Work and Network By Archuleta Chisolm

Driving down the highway, Leticia Marshall is on her way to meet a client. She is a real estate agent for Keller Williams in Dallas, Texas and helps people either sell their home or purchase a home. After serving 8 years in the United States Army, Leticia wanted a new career where she could make a lot of money! With the discipline and hard-working attitude she learned in the military, the last 11 months as a real estate agent has been just what she wanted. Marshall begins her day looking at a market activity report Leticia Marshall that lets her know what houses sold, new listings, price changes and other information. She spends the majority of her day showing homes to clients. She can set her own hours and make as much money as she wants. “The amount of money you make depends on how much work you are willing to put in” Marshall says. Daily, she sets appointments with clients and provides information about homes they are interested in. A home buyer relies on Marshall to guide them towards making an offer to purchase a home. She says that good communication skills and patience are the most important qualities in real estate. Also, you have to have a “go-getter” attitude. She is a member of the Board of Realtors Association which is required as an agent, but she also attends various events and group meetings to introduce herself to new people. “Networking is key”, she says. “Everyone [adult] is a potential client.” A college degree is not required to become a real estate agent. However, Leticia stresses the importance of an education. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Community Development Health Services and hopes to continue her education. Her favorite subject in school was science and has a telescope and a microscope at home! How fun is that!? Helping people is what Leticia enjoys most about her career. “I really enjoy helping first-time home buyers,” she says. Leticia also says that dealing with different personalities can be the challenging part of her job. She admits that she can’t make everyone happy but she certainly tries! “If someone has a need for a home, I am willing to help in any way that I can.”

PLANNING YOUR CAREER By DeNeen Attard

Selecting a career can be intimidating if you don’t have a plan on how you are going to make your decision. However, it doesn’t have to be —if you create a plan based on specific criteria. Here are several things to consider when trying to determine which career is best for you. 1. What type of career interests you? 2. What are some of your talents and can you use them to help you prepare for a career? 3. Do you want to be an employee working for someone or an employer hiring other people? 4. In what type of work environment do you work best (office, outdoors, day / night shifts)? 5. What type of education will you need? 6. What type of salary do you want to earn? 7. Do you want to work for a large, medium, or small size company? 8. Do you want to travel for your job? 9. Do you like doing the work or being the supervisor? Keep in mind these are just a few ideas. Don’t stop here, brainstorm with family, friends and mentors for other questions to consider before selecting which career is best for you.
